Enhanced both in-plane and through-thickness thermal conductivity of carbon fiber/epoxy composites by fabricating high thermal conductive coaxial PAN/PBO carbon fibers

Mengyuan Hao,Zhen Hu,Yudong Huang,Xin Qian,Zhangping Wen,Xuefei Wang,Li Liu,Fei Lu,Yonggang Zhang

PAN-based carbon fibers (PAN-CFs) have been widely used as structural reinforcements of various advanced composites due to their excellent mechanical properties . However, PAN-CFs have no obvious superiority in terms of the heat dissipation ability compared to mesophase pitch-based CFs and vapor grown CFs. In the present work, Poly- p -phenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO) macromolecules, which could contribute to the development of highly ordered graphite from conjugated aromatic backbone, were introduced onto PAN-CF surfaces to prepare coaxial PAN/PBO carbon fibers (PAN/PBO-CFs). Results showed that functional graphene oxide (GO) could result in uniform grafting of PBO macromolecules onto fiber surfaces owing to π–π conjugations between GO and benzoxazole backbone. The coaxial PAN/PBO-CFs were subsequently obtained through high-temperature graphitization and the rigid state could be also retained. Results by XRD and TEM demonstrated that PAN/PBO-CFs had smaller interlayer spacing and higher crystallinity compared to PAN-CF, and PBO derived graphite crystals could also be perpendicular to fiber surfaces. As for the thermal conductivity of composites, the in-plane thermal conductivity of PAN/PBO-CF reinforced epoxy composite was as high as 82.86 W/(m·K) which was almost 1.5 times of PAN-CF/epoxy composites, and the through-thickness thermal conductivity with the value of 2.54 W/(m·K) also increased by 65%. The introduction of PBO macromolecules could contribute new conductive paths and alleviate the problem of interfacial temperature gradients between CF and resin matrix . As a result, thermal conductivity properties of coaxial PAN/PBO-CF reinforced composites significantly improved.

Discovery of N-(3-bromo-1H-indol-5-yl)-quinazolin-4-amine as an effective molecular skeleton to develop reversible/irreversible pan-HER inhibitors

Qidong Tang,Ting Peng,Jie Hu,Tao Zhang,Pengqin Chen,Daoxing Chen,Yunjie Wang,Lingfeng Chen,Linjiang Tong,Yi Chen,Hua Xie,Guang Liang

Pan-HER inhibitors exhibit extensive biological activity and offer unique advantages and usually bind to targets in an irreversible manner. Owing to the off-target toxicity of irreversible inhibitors, reversible pan-HER inhibitors are desirable. Herein, we describe the process of N -(ring structure fused phenyl)quinazoline-4-amine-based design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of pan-HER inhibitors in vitro and in vivo . Compound C5 , with the molecular skeleton of N -(3-bromo-1 H -indol-5-yl)-quinazolin-4-amine, displayed irreversible binding just like other effective pan-HER inhibitors. To our surprise, compound C6, which possessed the same skeleton, was found to be a high-strength reversible pan-HER inhibitor. This compound was capable of inhibiting HER1s (such as EGFR T790M/L858R and WT), HER2, and HER4 and can be considered as a breakthrough in the development of pan-HER inhibitors. Altogether, N -(3-bromo-1 H -indol-5-yl)-quinazolin-4-amine can serve as an effective molecular skeleton for developing both reversible and irreversible pan-HER inhibitors in the following discovery of antitumor drugs .

Super-Flexible Carbon Nanofiber Networks Containing PAN/PVP and Composites Coated with NiCo2O4 Nanosheets as Self-Supporting Electrodes for Supercapacitors and Sodium-Ion Batteries**

Shanshan Chai,Kangze Dong,Tong Wu,Qingsheng Wu

Graphical A super-flexible carbon fiber network material is prepared by electrospinning followed by in situ carbonization. NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets with a three-dimensional network membrane structure are then electrodeposited on it, exhibiting excellent flexibility and electrochemical performance both in supercapacitors and sodium-ion batteries. The rapid development of wearable electronics requests a higher energy-storage-device flexibility. Nevertheless, the fabrication of high-performance electrodes for achieving the goal of super-flexibility remains challenging. In this work, novel super-flexible PAN/PVP carbon nanofiber networks (PAN/PVP CNFs, PCF) are prepared by electrospinning followed by in situ carbonisation, whose micro-mesoporous structure could disperse stress during folding and super-flexible PCF/NCONS self-supporting electrodes are fabricated through the electrodeposition of NiCo 2 O 4 nanosheets (NCONS) with three-dimensional membrane structure on the PCF firmly. The obtained PCF/NCONS cannot only achieve 8000 times folding, but also show high electrochemical performance for both supercapacitors and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). For supercapacitor, the specific capacitance of the PCF/NCONS reaches 1403.5 F/g at 1 A/g and it could maintain at 95.7 % after 2000 cycles. The PCF/NCONS electrodes are also used to fabricate an asymmetric supercapacitor device. The device exhibit high energy density (26.96 Wh/kg), high power density (3870.69 W/kg at 14.52 Wh/kg) and outstanding cycling stability (96.8 % retention after 3000 cycles). For SIBs, the PCF/NCONS electrodes show a high reversible capacity of 227.68 mAh/g after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A/g. The super-flexible PCF/NCONS electrodes have a wide application prospect for flexible electronics.

A novel electro-spun Cu-MOF loaded PAN/cellulose membrane for efficient adsorption-assisted photocatalytic decontamination of bisphenol A: Kinetics, thermodynamics, and mechanistic study

Alamgir,Basem Al Alwan,Adeel Ahmed,Abdul Qadir,Muhammad Fayaz,Amira Alazmi,Muhammad Aadil,Mohamed R. El-Aassar,Atef El Jery,Muhammad Rafiq,Raza Ullah

Electrospun membranes have gained attention for wastewater treatment, but pristine nanofiber membranes like Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) often have limited adsorption and photocatalytic efficiency. A hybrid membrane was developed to address this, combining PAN, cellulose, and a metal–organic framework (MOF) to create a multifunctional photocatalytic adsorbent. The membrane was fabricated using an electrospinning process. PAN was infused with copper-based MOF (Cu-MOF), and cellulose was blended with polyethylene oxide (PEO), resulting in an integrated membrane structure. Structural characterization confirmed the uniform distribution and firm adhesion of Cu-MOF to the PAN fibers. The photocatalytic potential of the synthesized membrane was evaluated for the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from water under visible light irradiation. The PAN/Cellulose nanofiber substrate loaded with 1.0 g of Cu-MOF (PAN/Cell/MOF-III) achieved 98 % removal efficiency. The PAN, PAN/Cell, pristine Cu-MOF, PAN/Cell/MOF-I, PAN/Cell/MOF-II, and PAN/Cell/MOF-III exhibited adsorption capacities of 4.0, 19.9, 69.1, 30.7, 47.4, and 87 mg/g, respectively. The effects of key factors, including membrane dosage, solution pH, and BPA concentration, on the adsorption and degradation efficiency of PAN/Cell/MOF-III were systematically explored. Trapping species and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), studies identified holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (O 2 − ) as the primary reactive species responsible for BPA degradation. Kinetic analysis revealed degradation followed a pseudo-first-order model, while adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG ads , ΔH ads , ΔS ads ) indicated spontaneous, physical, and endothermic adsorption. The Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models accurately fit the adsorption data. The PAN/Cell/MOF-III membrane showed excellent reusability over five cycles, demonstrating its potential for practical wastewater treatment applications.

Durable sodium alginate hydrogel with hard-soft interpenetrating networks and directed electron flow: Toward pan-regional photo-Fenton-like catalysis for persistent antibiotic degradation

Jiayu Ouyang,Wenzhuo Lv,Canhui Wang,Xin Guo,Huiying Lv,Yiqiang Wu

Achieving a balance between catalytic efficiency and structural durability remains a key challenge in heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like systems. Herein, we report a robust sodium alginate hydrogel (ACCN) with hard–soft dual interpenetrating networks, constructed by incorporating Cu@MoS 2 nanosheets and carbon dots-modified cellulose nanofibrils (CNF@CDs). This structural design enables pan-regional photo-Fenton-like catalysis via structural optimization and directed electron transport, thereby ensuring sustained ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. Three key features synergistically enhance both catalytic performance and material integrity: (1) a dual interpenetrating network comprising Cu 2+ -crosslinked sodium alginate (SA, soft phase) and hydrogen-bonded CNF@CDs (rigid phase), which reinforces mechanical strength and prevents Cu@MoS 2 leaching; (2) the SA/CNF@CDs network exhibits an ultrahigh CIP adsorption capacity, which spatially concentrates pollutants and accelerates reaction kinetics; and (3) CNF@CDs facilitates electron transfer from Cu@MoS 2 to Cu 2+ crosslinking sites, promoting pan-regional Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycling. This spatial–electronic integration endows ACCN with a CIP degradation rate constant of 0.0426 min −1 —7.5-fold higher than that of Cu@MoS 2 . Furthermore, ACCN demonstrates excellent durability and reusability, maintaining over 95 % catalytic activity after 10 cycles, with Mo leaching below 8 ppb. This work provides a sustainable strategy for integrating structural and electronic modulation to enable high-efficiency, durable antibiotic wastewater treatment.

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate upregulate PPARG and induce metabolic reprogramming in hepatocellular carcinoma cells: a pan-cancer and metabolomics study

Yuxing Liao,Huiqing Liang,Hongmei Huang,Wenjie Yang,Shuangyan Su,Cuixiang Zhang,Yuxi Xiao,Jiaqi Gong,Qirong Yang,Guihua Wang,Guiyuan Chen,Xueying Li

PPARG identified as shared core target of DEHP and MEHP in HCC via network toxicology. • PPARG upregulation linked to poor overall survival in hepatocellular carcinoma. • DEHP/MEHP exposure induces lipid accumulation and PPARG expression in HepG2 cells. • Metabolomics reveals phthalate-induced disruptions in lipid and nucleotide pathways. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and its primary metabolite mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) have been implicated in metabolic dysregulation and carcinogenesis, but their potential links to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. Using network toxicology and pan-cancer analyses, we identified PPARG as a candidate shared target of DEHP and MEHP. PPARG was upregulated in HCC tissues, and higher expression was associated with poorer overall survival in the TCGA-LIHC cohort. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations predicted a more favorable and stable interaction between MEHP and PPARG than between DEHP and PPARG. In HepG2 cells, both compounds increased lipid accumulation and PPARG expression. Rosiglitazone promoted lipid accumulation and upregulated the lipid-storage genes DGAT2 and PLIN2, whereas GW9662 attenuated DEHP/MEHP-induced lipid accumulation and related transcriptional responses. Untargeted LC–MS metabolomics revealed relative alterations in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine features and suggested perturbations in fatty acid-, bile acid-, arachidonic acid-, and nucleotide-related pathways. Collectively, these findings support a functional contribution of PPARG to DEHP/MEHP-associated lipid accumulation, potentially involving a DGAT2/PLIN2-related lipid-storage program, and provide mechanistic clues to phthalate-associated metabolic dysregulation in liver cancer cells. Efficient purification of emulsified oil-containing wastewater via groove-structure PAN nanofiber membranes loading superhydrophilic amidoxime functionalized UiO-66 fabricated using coaxial sacrificial-template method

Fan Xiao,Ming Cao,Yingbo Chen,Xiaofeng Lin

Oil-contaminated wastewater, a pervasive byproduct of industrial processes, poses severe ecological threats, particularly surfactant-stabilized emulsions (SSEs) with high dispersion stability and resistance to conventional separation. Addressing this challenge demands innovative materials with superior separation efficacy. Electrospun nanofiber membranes, though promising, are often limited by low flux and poor durability. To address the issues, we presented an amidoxime functionalized UiO-66 (UiO-66-AO) mediated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite nanofiber membrane fabricated through a novel coaxial two-component electrospinning coupled with sacrificial template strategy. The membrane design utilized UiO-66-AO/PAN served as the shell-layer matrix, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a sacrificial core template. Subsequent the dissolution of PVP template created longitudinally aligned hollow groove structure, introducing rough surface while preserving structural integrity. Amidoxime modification enhanced the dispersion compatibility of UiO-66-AO within the PAN matrix, further improving the superhydrophilicity and implementing multi-level micro-nano rough structure of composite nanofibers. The synergistic effect of PVP template and UiO-66-AO promoted the generation of AO/PAN membranes with high separation area, excellent water-wetting property, and underwater superoleophobicity. The optimized 0.5 % AO/PAN composite membrane delivered outstanding separation performance for different SSEs, achieving high flux of 9689.7 L·m −2 ·h −1 and good separation efficiency of 99.4 % for petroleum ether/water SSE. Remarkably, after 20 separation cycles for n-hexane/water SSE, 0.5 % AO/PAN retained the flux recovery capability of 84.44 %, demonstrating superior anti-fouling capability and long-term durability. This work provides a robust strategy for fabricating high-performance nanofiber membranes through precise microstructure engineering and functional group modification, offering a promising solution for the treatment of challenging oily wastewater.

Microwave-assisted functionalization of PAN fiber by 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol with high efficacy for improved and selective removal of Hg2+ from water

Sheng Deng,Shuxuan Wu,Xu Han,Fu Xia,Xiangjian Xu,Liangjing Zhang,Yonghai Jiang,Yuhui Liu,Yu Yang

Mercury (Hg 2+ ) contamination in water is associated with potential toxicity to human health and ecosystems. Many research studies have been ongoing to develop new materials for the remediation of Hg 2+ pollution in water. In this study, a novel thiol- and amino-containing fibrous adsorbent was prepared by grafting 2-amino-5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol (AMTD) onto PAN fiber through a microwave-assisted method. The synthesized functional fiber was characterized by FTIR, SEM, and elemental analysis. Adsorption tests depicted that for mercury uptake, PAN MW -AMTD fiber exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity compared with other fibrous adsorbents and selective adsorption feature under the interference of other metal ions , including Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Zn 2+ . The influence of pH on the adsorption process was investigated and the effect of temperature revealed that the adsorption sorption process was endothermic and the adsorption performance of PAN MW -AMTD was elevated with the increase of temperature. Kinetic studies of PAN MW -AMTD fiber followed the pseudo-second-order and the adsorption isotherm of Hg 2+ was well fitted by Sips and Langmuir equations, given the maximum adsorption amount of 332.9 mg/g. XPS results suggested that a synergetic coordination effect of sulfur and nitrogen in functional fiber with mercury took responsibility for the adsorption mechanism in the uptake process. In addition, the prepared PAN MW -AMTD fiber could easily be regenerated with 0.1 M HCl for five times without significant reduction of mercury removal efficiency. Thus, this study will facilitate the research on novel functional material for the removal of mercury from water.

A multifunctional PAN/PVP nanofiber sponge wound dressing loaded with ZIF-8-derived carbon nanoparticles with adjustable wetness for rapid wound disinfection and exudate management

Zhipeng Yuan,Jing Zhang,Xinfu Zhao,Sijia Liu,Shimo Yu,Xiaochan Liu,Xinen Zhang,Xibin Yi

Rapid and safe disinfection and exudate management are two major challenges in infected wound care. Therefore, in this work, we developed a novel wound dressing via encapsulating ZIF-8-derived carbon nanoparticles in a hydrophilic nanofiber sponge to address severe wound infection and heavy exudate problems. The dressing can effectively kill bacteria through chemo-photothermal synergistic therapy. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic nanofiber sponge can quickly absorb wound exudate around the wound and accelerate the evaporation rate of liquid through the photothermal effect and its own structure; therefore, it is possible to remove excess liquid and regulate its wetness. In this way, it prevents the problem of wound overhydration often caused by hydrophilic dressings. In our experiment, the dressing showed good antibacterial performance and biocompatibility in vitro and could effectively control wound infection, absorb wound exudate and promote skin wound healing in vivo. Its good therapeutic effect is not only due to effective infection control and wound exudate management, but also because the structure of nanofibers similar to an extracellular matrix provides basic physical support and structural  signals conducive to skin tissue regeneration.

Design of multiple anti-fouling and honeycomb-like NH2-AgBiS2 @g-C3N4 hydrogel layer onto PAN fiber membrane for multicomponent pollutant-oil-water emulsion treatment

Hongshan Jia,Yingqing Zhan,Fei Zhu,Ximin Chen,Xinyue Duan,Ning Zhang,Jie Liu,Yinlong Li

Nano-structured hydrogel with unique anti-oil fouling property exhibits big advantage in oil/water separation, but its application in complex oily wastewater (contain oils, organic matter, bacteria, etc.) cleanup is hampered by the insufficient capabilities in multi-antifouling and synergistic treatment. Herein, we constructed the amino-rich NH 2 -AgBiS 2 /PANI (polyaniline)-g-C 3 N 4 based multi-functional hydrogel functional layer onto the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber membrane via polyphenol-mediated chitosan gelation and vacuum-assisted self-assembly techniques. The unique honeycomb-like structure and super-wetting feature synergistically contributed to the powerful oil resistance and flux breakthrough of composite membrane. Such membrane achieved superior permeability (up to 3558 L −1 m −2 h −1 ) for various SDS-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions and remarkable synergistic treatment efficiency of multicomponent pollutant-oil-water emulsion. The rational design of hydrogel layer on membrane surface intensified the photo-response ability and multiple electron transport channels, which offered the favorable photocatalytic self-cleaning performance towards degradation of organic dyes. According to the free radical quenching and EPR experiments, the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. In addition, the inhibition rate of E. coli could reach 100 % under illumination of 24 h. Therefore, the integration of ultra-low oil adhesion, photocatalytic self-cleaning, and antibacterial features endows membrane with exceptional multiple anti-fouling performance, exhibiting unique advantages over traditional membranes in handling complex membrane fouling issues.

A novel nanofibrous PAN ultrafiltration membrane embedded with ZIF-8 nanoparticles for effective removal of Congo red, Pb(II), and Cu(II) in industrial wastewater treatment

Mu Li,Jingwen Luo,Jianjiang Lu,Wentao Shang,Jiale Mu,Feiyun Sun,Zijun Dong,Xiaoyan Li

A novel Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite membrane involving ZIF-8 nanoparticles , named as ZIF-8/PAN membrane, was obtained via electrospinning to remove the Congo red (CR), Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions in industrial wastewaters , during which the adsorption mechanisms were examined in this study. The adsorption efficiency of the electrospun ZIF-8/PAN membrane was as high as 89%, 92% and 76% for CR, Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. Comparative analysis showed that ZIF-8 nanoparticles embedded in the ZIF-8/PAN membrane accounted for these enhanced adsorption capabilities. The adsorption behaviors of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles were investigated through experiments and theoretical analysis, and the results unraveled that the adsorption for CR by the ZIF-8 was mainly including electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π − π interaction, while those for Pb(II) and Cu(II) were mainly caused by ion-exchange and chemical adsorption. Parametric studies were conducted to optimize the conditions for removing CR, Pb(II), and Cu(II) by ZIF-8 nanoparticles, during which all of pollutants showed different reactions to the solution pH. This work not only develops a novel ZIF-8/PAN composite membrane for effective removals of pollutants, but also reveals the underlying mechanisms of pollutants adsorption in terms of molecular interactions, providing important understandings on fibrous materials design for efficient heavy metals and dyes removals in industrial wastewater treatment .

Inhibitory effect of mulberry leaf (Morus alba L.) extract on the formation of free and bound heterocyclic amines in pan-fried muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) patties

Yan Xu,Yiqun Cheng,Zongshuai Zhu,Haoyu Guo,Anthony Pius Bassey,Tianran Huang,Yongqiang Huang,Ming Huang

The effect of different levels (0.01%, 0.03%, 0.05% and 0.10%) of mulberry leaf ( Morus alba L.) extract (MLE) on the formation of free and bound heterocyclic amines (HCAs) in pan-fried muscovy duck ( Cairina moschata ) patties were investigated for the first time. Precursors of HCAs, oxidant index of patties and phenolic composition of MLE were measured. The total free and bound HCAs levels in control samples were 28.37 ng/g and 1935.65 ng/g, and the inhibition rates were 6.71–68.92% and 6.71–14.05% in MLE treatment groups, respectively, and 0.03% showed the strongest inhibitory effect. OPLS-DA result indicated that MeIQ, 8-MeIQx and Norharman were crucial differential compounds in total HCAs. Furthermore, the addition of MLE significantly inhibited the lipid and protein oxidation of patties ( P  < 0.05). Fifteen phenolic compounds , mainly flavonoids , were identified by LC-MS. The mitigation of HCAs and oxidation may be attributed to them. Correlation analysis indicated that the total HCAs content was negatively correlated with precursors but positively correlated with oxidation. In conclusion, MLE helped mitigate HCAs formation during muscovy duck processing and appeared to be a viable natural additive for producing healthier processed meat products .
