Improving the specific capacitance and energy density of a fiber-shaped supercapacitor (FSSC) is critical to its applications as an energy storage device for advanced smart wearable electronics. In this paper, a heterogeneous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)/reduced graphene oxide/molybdenum disulfide (PEDOT:PSS/rGO/MoS2) fiber was prepared to achieve a high-performance and durable electrode for the FSSC. As indicated, pseudocapacitive MoS2 was in situ grown on a highly conductive acid-treated PEDOT:PSS/rGO assembly with a hierarchical structure. This structural design emphasizes the wrinkled morphology and high conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS/rGO backbone to maximize the MoS2 deposition and accelerate its electron transfer, which fully utilizes the pseudocapacitance of MoS2 and provides additional capacitance contribution to the obtained device. Attributed to the synergy, the prepared fiber electrode in the FSSC exhibits high volumetric/areal specific capacitance (325.8 F cm–3/405.3 mF cm–2 at 1 A cm–3 or 1.2 mA cm–2) and excellent rate performance (82%, 1–10 A cm–3). The corresponding device shows an ultrahigh volumetric energy density of 6.9 mW h cm–3 at a high power density of 173.6 mW cm–3 and an areal energy density of 8.5 μW h cm–2 at 215.9 μW cm–2, together with excellent cycle stability and mechanical flexibility, outperforming most of the previously reported FSSCs. Accordingly, the proposed strategy provides a great opportunity to develop a high-performance FSSC for further wearable electronics.

The medial amygdala (MA) plays an important role in the innate fear circuit. However, the electrophysiological mechanism of MA for processing innate fear needs to be further explored. In this study, we fabricated microelectrode arrays (MEAs) with detecting sites arranged to match the location and shape of MA in mice and detected the electrophysiology in freely behaving mice under 2-methyl-2-thiazoline (2MT)-induced fear. The detection performance of MEA is improved by modifying metal nanoparticles and conductive polymers (PtNPs/PEDOT:PSS). After modification, the impedance magnitude and phase of electrodes were decreased to 27.0 ± 2.3 kΩ and −12.30 ± 0.52°, respectively, leading to a signal-to-noise ratio of 10. Its electrochemical stability and mechanical stability were also verified by cyclic voltammetry (CV) sweeping and ultrasonic vibration. MEAs were then implanted into the MA of mice, and the electrophysiology and behavioral characteristics were synchronously recorded and analyzed. The results showed that 2MT induced strong defensive behaviors in mice, accompanied by increases in the average spike firing rate and local field potential (LFP) power of MA neurons. According to principles commonly applied to cortical extracellular recordings, the recorded neurons are divided into two classes based on waveforms. Statistics showed that about 37% of type 1 neurons (putative GABAergic neurons) and 87% of type 2 neurons (putative glutamatergic neurons) were significantly activated under innate fear. At the same time, the firing rate of some activated neurons had a good linear correlation with the freezing rate.

The development and improvement of fabric-based stretchable strain sensors play a vital role in constructing wearable devices. In this paper, a flexible and sensitive cotton-based strain sensor for human motion monitoring was successfully developed by facile LBL-ESA (layer-by-layer electrostatic self-assembly) of chitosan (or chitosan quaternary ammonium salt) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate), abbreviated to PEDOT:PSS. Chemical structure and microscopic morphology of the cotton fabric coated with PEDOT:PSS were measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron micrographs, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and color strength (K/S value). Electrical conductivity of the fabric changed with the “odd–even” oscillations of K/S value of the cotton fabric. Furthermore, cotton fabric alternately deposited with five cycles reached the highest electrical conductivity (0.335 mS/cm). Meanwhile, the fabric presents excellent UV protection capacity (maximum UPF value of 385.07), which was 24.4 times of pristine cotton fabric (15.76). In addition, cotton fabric strain sensor coated by PEDOT:PSS could effectively detect finger and knee movements of humans, showing a promising prospect in the field of human rehabilitation training, real-time monitoring, and gesture recognition due to its good stability and being highly responsive.

In this work, a polymer and ionic liquid (IL) hybrid with superior thermoelectric performance is prepared via a system design of the chemical composition, molar ratio of the constituent molecules and manipulating the structure in solution and dried films. The solution-casted hybrid film, consisting of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tricyanomethanide (EMIM:TCM), shows the highest power factor of 175 μW m −1 K −2 in the polymer hybrid prepared by a post-treatment-free method. With a set of complementary structure characterization methods, it is found that EMIM:TCM can induce the structure reorganization of PEDOT:PSS in solution from a core-shell model to a rod-like model, during which PEDOT partially separates from PSS that eases the conductive network formation. In addition, the oxidation level of PEDOT:PSS is reduced by adding EMIM:TCM. Based on which, the PEDOT:PSS/IL hybrid shows the best performance in optimizing the conductivity (1163 S cm −1 ) and Seebeck coefficient (38.8 μV K −1 ) simultaneously.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):Poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) emerges as a promising transparent conducting electrode to replace indium tin oxide (ITO) in the field of optoelectronic devices. It is a pending issue that how to achieve high-conductivity PEDOT:PSS to meet the requirement as device electrode. In this work, two biomass-derived modifiers of PEDOT:PSS, i.e. , protocatechuic acid (PA) and gentianic acid (GtA), were investigated. The resultant conductivity was respectively estimated as 2022 S/cm (PA-treated) and 2270 S/cm (GtA-treated), in comparison with that of the ordinarily prepared film (∼0.9 S/cm). By analyzing the PEDOT/PSS ratio, phase morphology, as well as benzenoid/quinoid conformation, crystalline structure, the mechanism on conductivity enhancement was systematically elucidated. Based on the density functional theory, the synergistic effect of carboxy and phenol groups was verified as the origin of excellent doping-efficiency of these two biomass-derived modifiers. What is more, an ITO-free OLED device was successfully fabricated, where the PA or GtA-treated PEDOT:PSS was employed as transparent conducting electrode. Surprisingly, a remarkable improvement with regard to device performance was observed, in spite of the not good enough conductivity relative to ITO . Using the PA/GtA-modified electrodes, the external quantum efficiency (EQE), current efficiency, and power efficiency of OLED devices is elevated by 50–300% at the brightness of 100 cd/m 2 for electronic display application. To reveal the underlying mechanism, the energy levels and the light extraction were examined and then ascribed to the paradox. The findings present a possible strategy to construct high-efficiency OLEDs relying on organic transparent electrodes and a promising application of biomass-derived chemicals.

The acute hippocampal slice is useful for understanding how epilepsy spatially initiates, propagates, and terminates in the hippocampus, which is vital to study the epileptic mechanism in it. However, it is challenging to detect the electrical signals of the main cell layer (the granular cell layer in the dentate gyrus (DG) and the pyramidal cell layer in CA1 and CA3a–c), which play an important role in epilepsy, because it is difficult to be accurately located by electrodes and typically show low throughput. In this study, a special in vitro microelectrode array (MEA) for rat hippocampal slices was fabricated. The recording sites of the MEA were designed along the main cell layer to record accurately the electrical signals of this layer in each hippocampal sub-region. A special “less-hydrophilic-MWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS modification method” for in vitro MEA was applied to deposit electrochemically the MWCNTs/PEDOT:PSS nanocomposites onto the surface of the microelectrodes, which significantly improved their performance with low impedance (36.41 ± 3.07 kΩ), small phase delay (−41.2 ± 4.90°), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N = 5.4) and good biocompatibility. The application of high-K + -ACSF and D-AP5 (NMDA receptor antagonist) showed a neural signal projection pathway of the epileptic discharges in the hippocampal slice. The epileptic discharges originated in CA3b, where the neurons acted as a pacemaker, and spread to CA1 and DG bi-directionally along the main cell layer. Moreover, the epileptic discharges spread backward (CA3b to DG) faster than forward (CA3b to CA1). The MEA provides a reliable and sensitive dedicated biosensor for hippocampal slices.

High performance, flexible transparent conductive films with a structure similar to that of reinforced concrete and constructed by sandwiching single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) between poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and polydopamine functionalized reduced graphene oxide (PDA-RGO) were fabricated using simple spray coating. Mussel-inspired polydopamine was introduced as a graphene oxide reducing agent and modifier; the obtained PDA-RGO improved the interfacial adhesion between the conductive coating layers and substrate, and an effective post fabrication treatment method was performed on the hybrid film to achieve better conductivity. It was found that the resulting electrode exhibited a low sheet resistance of 52.2 Ω/sq. with a high optical transmittance of 88.7% at 550 nm. Moreover, the transparent film exhibited long-term stability with a relatively low roughness (ca. 2.41 nm), and its architectural structure sustained the flexibility of the film during bending. The organic light emitting diodes which using PDA-RGO/SWCNT/PEDOT:PSS film as anode was successfully fabricated, the luminance of the device was 2032 cd/cm 2 at 15 V and the maximum current efficiency was 2.13 cd/A at 14 V, indicating the strong potential of this type of transparent electrode for flexible electroluminescent devices.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)–molybdenum oxide (MoOx) composite films are used as hole transport layers in planar perovskite solar cells (PSCs) by simply incorporating solution-processed MoOx powders into a PEDOT:PSS solution. Compared to PEDOT:PSS based PSCs, the PEDOT:PSS–MoOx based PSC exhibits an obvious improvement in conversion efficiency, open circuit voltage, and fill factor. The morphology of perovskite films indicates that the film coverage has been improved due to the introduction of MoOx nanospots into the underlayer, which are regarded as the growing sites of the crystal nucleus of the perovskites during annealing. A PEDOT:PSS–MoOx based device with a power conversion efficiency of over 15% has been achieved, suggesting that the PEDOT:PSS–MoOx film is efficient as a hole transport layer in obtaining highly efficient planar perovskite solar cells.

The synthesis of liquid metal-infused hydrogels, typically constituted by polyacrylamide networks crosslinked through covalent bonds , often encounters a conundrum: they exhibit restricted extensibility and a diminished capacity for self-repair, owing to the inherently irreversible nature of the covalent linkages. This study introduces a hydrophobically associated hydrogel embedding gallium (Ga)-droplets, realized through the in situ free radical copolymerization of hydrophobic hexadecyl methacrylate (HMA) and hydrophilic acrylamide (AM) in a milieu containing xanthan gum (XG) and PEDOT:PSS, which co-stabilizes the Ga-droplets. The Ga-droplets, synergistically functioning as conductive agents alongside PEDOT:PSS, also expedite the hydrogel's formation. The resultant XG/PEDOT:PSS-Ga-P(AM-HMA) hydrogel is distinguished by its remarkable extensibility (2950 %), exceptional toughness (3.28 MJ/m 3 ), superior adherence to hydrophobic, smooth substrates, and an innate ability for hydrophobic-driven self-healing. As a strain sensing medium, this hydrogel-based sensor exhibits heightened sensitivity (gauge factor = 12.66), low detection threshold (0.1 %), and robust durability (>500 cycles). Furthermore, the inclusion of glycerol endows the XG/PEDOT:PSS-Ga-P(AM-HMA) hydrogel with anti-freezing properties without compromising its mechanical integrity and sensing acumen. This sensor adeptly captures a spectrum of human movements, from the nuanced radial pulse to extensive joint articulations. This research heralds a novel approach for fabricating multifaceted PAM-based hydrogels with toughness and superior sensing capabilities.

P(VDF-HFP) is widely used in transistors, electret and artificial skin due to its excellent dielectric properties . In order to dramatically improve its dielectric constant, conductive fillers are used for doping, but the compatibility is not optimistic between the fillers and the PVDF . In this paper, PEDOT:PSS/P(VDF-HFP) all-organic films with interpenetrating network structure were prepared by the addition of H 2 O. The dielectric constant of the film with 0.5 wt % PEDOT:PSS reached up to 323 and the tanδ was only 0.48 (1 k Hz, 18 °C). The addition of the H 2 O made the small amount of PEDOT:PSS evenly distribute in the P(VDF-HFP), as a result, the percolation threshold decreased. Besides, molecular chains of PEDOT:PSS were overlapped to form a uniform network. This paper provided a novel preparation method for a uniform film with two kinds of matters with different compatibility.

The multifunctional integration properties of biological tissues provide significant bionic insights for designing intelligent materials, driving the advancement of materials science toward multifunctional coupling. Traditional flexible materials often face challenges in achieving property compatibility and functional synergy, especially under complex environments. To address these challenges, this work developed a novel composite ionogel based on poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and PEDOT:PSS, which exhibits toughness, frost resistance, underwater stability, and shape memory functionality. The incorporation of conductive filler PEDOT:PSS synergistically optimizes the mechanical properties, near-infrared-responsive functionality and conductivity of composite ionogels. The ionogels exhibit superior thermo/light dual-response shape memory behavior, with shape fixation and recovery rates both exceeding 98 %. Based on the light-responsive shape memory performance, the ionogels can lift objects 22 times its own weight and enable real-time monitoring of the actuation process through the resistance variation induced by shape recovery. The ionogel's underwater environmental stability and enhanced conductivity allow its strain sensors to effectively monitor human joint movements, such as finger and wrist bending, in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Additionally, a self-powered pressure sensor fabricated with this ionogel serving as both the friction and conductive layers exhibits a high sensitivity of 5.890 V kPa −1 , enabling real-time human activity capture and facilitating an innovative braille typing assistance system for the visually impaired. This work offers novel insights into the engineering of material properties and the integration of multifunctionalities, thereby promoting the advancement of multifunctional material systems.

A major obstacle in the development of solid contact ion-selective electrodes (SC-ISEs) is the frequent calibration procedures due to the low reproducibility of standard potential(E 0 ) and the unstable signals. To address these challenges, we developed an all-solid state miniature sodium ion-selective electrode (Na + -ISE) based on acid-doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulphonate (PEDOT: PSS) as the solid contact layer, in combination with an external polarization technique. Acid doping minimized the Coulomb interaction between PEDOT and PSS, inducing significant phase separation and conformational re-aggregation of PEDOT chains, thus creating more contact points to facilitate charge transport and ion-to-electron transduction. The sensor exhibited excellent potentiometric performance with a detection limit of 5.90378 μM and potential drift of 10.99 μV/h. More importantly, external polarization significantly improved E 0 reproducibility across different electrodes (standard deviation reduced from 57.41 mV to 1.95 mV) and reduced batch-to-batch E 0 variability. The performance of the potentiometric sensor system was evaluated in inactivated fetal bovine serum, and the measurement results were highly comparable to those of the reference methods with deviation of less than 4 %. The electrochemical sensing system developed in this study provides a novel strategy for highly stable sodium ion sensing, indicating promising potential for calibration-free measurement in medical application.
