Tea polyphenol (TP) is used as a food additive to inhibit lipid peroxidation reactions and extend shelf life, but excessive intake can affect the human immune system. Therefore, developing effective TP detection is significant. Here, pyrene-based polyimide (Py-PI) was synthesized by one-step condensation copolymerization. This polyimide possessed excellent solubility and photoluminescence due to the introduction of pyrene-conjugated groups. It could be used as fluorescent probe for TP detection in solution. In addition, Py-PI fluorescent test paper with different morphology were prepared by electrospinning. As the concentration of the spinning solution was 15 wt%, the bead-like porous polymer electrospun membrane displayed excellent surface wettability which could make the water droplet completely penetrate into the sample within 6 min. The fluorescence enhancement phenomenon could be observed for 5 × 10 −6 mg/mL TP solution on Py-PI test paper. Furthermore, interference investigation of pH on test paper indicated that the sample exhibited a relatively stable fluorescence “turn-on” response in acidic conditions. This work provides a convenient and rapid detection of TP antioxidant in the future.

A bio-based phytate (PA)-intercalated Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH-PA) was successfully synthesized via a calcination-reconstruction method and incorporated into polypropylene (PP) as an efficient flame retardant. LDH-C precursors were first prepared by co-precipitation combined with hydrothermal treatment, followed by calcination at 500°C to obtain layered double oxides (LDO). Subsequent anion exchange with phytate under a nitrogen atmosphere reconstructed the LDH structure, introducing PA anions into the interlayer. The results from multiple characterization techniques confirmed the successful incorporation of phytate anions. The PP/LDH-PA composites exhibited markedly enhanced thermal stability. At a loading of 15 wt% LDH-PA, the maximum thermal decomposition rate decreased by 19.0%, and the residual char yield increased to 12.72 wt%. The composite achieved a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 26.8% and attained a UL-94 V-1 rating. Cone calorimeter tests showed that, compared with pure PP, the PP/LDH-PA 15 composite reduced the peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), peak smoke production rate (PSPR), total smoke release (TSR), peak CO release rate, and peak CO 2 release rate by 29.6%, 19.2%, 41.2%, 13.4%, 35.3%, and 32.4%, respectively. These enhancements can be mainly ascribed to three factors: (i) the compact char layer catalyzed by LDH-PA offers a physical barrier effect; (ii) during the LDH decomposition, the carbon dioxide and crystalline water released generate a dilution effect; (iii) PA brings about a radical-quenching mechanism.

This study innovatively used polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a multifunctional modifier to prepare nano-zinc oxide and polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (Nano ZnO/PHMG) hybrid melt-blown antibacterial composite materials by twin-screw blending. PEG overcame traditional additives' single-function limitation, achieving dual structural regulation and antibacterial enhancement. PEG rheological properties were modulated to produce multistage fiber structures, improving filtration performance, while simultaneously optimizing antibacterial component distribution through its water solubility. Systematic experiments revealed how PEG-regulated local viscosity affected multistage fiber formation and pore distribution, directly impacting filtration performance. At 12% PEG loading (ABA-PP-12PEG), optimal comprehensive performance was demonstrated: 77.45% filtration efficiency (153.5% increased) with 34.0% lower resistance (11.28 Pa). Post-treatment further enhanced performance to 80.06% efficiency and 10.68 Pa resistance. Antibacterial rates surged 6.7-fold from 1.78 to 12.01.

Epoxy adhesive is becoming increasingly widely used in industry and daily life. There are many requirements to adhere to high and low polar interfaces simultaneously. In this work, a high polar epoxy resin, N , N -bis(4-(oxiran-2-ylmethoxy) phenyl) adipamide (BOYPA), was designed and prepared. The relationship between the curing temperature and the curing time and the curing reaction kinetics equations of BOYPA and Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) with diethylenetriamine (DETA) was clarified by the study of the curing kinetics according to the Kissinger equation and the Crane equation. Compared with DGEBA, BOYPA required higher curing activation energy and had a lower curing reaction rate. The curing reaction of BOYPA and DGEBA was both a simple curing reaction. Moreover, the peel strength between the PP film and PA6 board bonded by the mixture of BOYPA and DGEBA could be obviously enhanced with the increase of BOYPA content due to the proper polarity and the formation of hydrogen bonds. Meanwhile, the impact strength of the mixture of BOYPA and DGEBA was significantly improved because of the good toughness of BOYPA. As a result, this work provided a simple method for regulating the bonding properties of epoxy adhesive for different adherent surfaces.

This study presents a reusable adsorbent material for industrial wastewater treatment. Double-network interpenetrating gel beads were prepared via condensation reaction and hydrogen bonding between sodium alginate and collagen, combined with PVA and ion crosslinking. The addition of collagen enhanced the equilibrium swelling ratio, strengthened the double-network structure, and increased adsorption sites. Optimal adsorption of tannic acid occurred at a collagen/PVA mass ratio of 1:2, achieving a maximum capacity of 261.53 mg/g and a removal rate of 78.46%. Influenced by multiple factors, the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, indicating chemisorption dominance. The beads maintained good adsorption capacity and structural stability over four adsorption–desorption cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability.

Thermoplastic toughening agents represent a prevalent category of epoxy resin modifiers. In practical applications, these agents can significantly enhance the mechanical properties of epoxy resins. However, due to the inherent phase separation characteristic of epoxy resins, the toughening effect is somewhat constrained. Recently, branched polymers have gained recognition for their effectiveness in toughening epoxy resins. Their low viscosity and abundant reactive groups facilitate superior toughening outcomes. This study leverages both the structural attributes of branched polymers and high-performance polyethersulfone ketone (PESK). Through nucleophilic polycondensation reactions involving bisphenol monomers such as dihydroxydiphenylsulfone (BDS), difluorophenyl ketone (DFDBK), and trifunctional monomer 1,1,1-tri(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane (THPE), we synthesized a series of long-chain polyaryletherketones (LCBPESK) with varying degrees of branching. The fundamental properties of these materials were characterized, and they were employed for toughening modification within the epoxy resin/methyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (E51/MTHPA) system. Characterization tests revealed that long-chain branched polyethersulfone ketones possessing both branched structures and reactive end groups effectively mitigate phase separation between the toughening agent and the epoxy resin while significantly enhancing its toughness. Notably, when LCBPESK-30 is incorporated at a loading level of 15 phr, there is a remarkable increase in impact strength by 133% in the epoxy system. In addition, we investigated the toughening mechanism of LCBPESK in E51. For polyaryl ether resins, a certain degree of branching and the presence of active end groups significantly influence their toughening effect in epoxy resins, which holds considerable industrial value and promising application prospects.

Poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF), a sustainable alternative to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), exhibits superior gas barrier properties but faces challenges in impact toughness and slow crystallization, limiting its industrial adoption. This study introduces a novel terminal modification strategy using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to synergistically enhance PEF's performance through π–π stacking interactions, plasticization, and crystallization optimization. By incorporating PAHs (9-PBA/1-NA) as terminal modifiers, modified PEFB x and PEFN x polyesters demonstrate accelerated crystallization (15 vs. 33 min for neat PEF) and increased crystallinity (53% vs. 41%). The PAH-driven π–π stacking and V-shaped B(OH) 2 groups in 9-PBA promote chain folding and ordered packing, significantly improving oxygen barrier performance (40.9% reduction in permeability coefficient) and mechanical properties. Remarkably, PEFB 0.5 achieves a 277% increase in elongation at break and a 229% enhancement in tensile modulus compared to unmodified PEF. Furthermore, the method integrates reactive extrusion with injection molding, offering a scalable and industrially viable route for producing high-performance PEF with balanced processability, barrier properties, and mechanical strength.

Hydrophobically modified ethoxylated urethane (HEUR), a typical polymer associative thickener, is extensively applied in aqueous coatings, textile printing, and resin coatings to regulate the rheological properties of the system. However, conventional branched HEURs face two critical limitations: (1) the risk of excessive cross-linking during the chain-expansion stage due to high monomer reactivity; (2) the phase-separation phenomenon in some branched HEUR aqueous solutions upon standing. To overcome these challenges, we designed and synthesized a polyhydroxy hyperbranched structure (PU-OH 3-6 ). This structure features two main advantages: a larger central backbone and a greater spacing between active groups (OH). The hyperbranched HEUR 3-6 synthesized using PU-OH 3-6 as a branched-type chain extender is more controllable and viable in the production process. Moreover, various testing methods were employed to assess the thickening performance, salt resistance, and water retention of HEUR in a pure-water system. The results indicated that the branched structures of HEUR 3-6 have better thickening properties compared with the previously reported HEUR with a linear structure (HEUR L ), and branched HEUR with using gamma-triol (HEUR GI ), pentaerythritol (HEUR P ), and xylitol (HEUR X ) to expand the chain. Among them, HEUR 5 demonstrated the best thickening effect in pure-water systems, while in salt-containing solutions, HEUR 6 with a six-branched degree showed more pronounced anti-electrolyte properties.

The objective of this research is to develop a composite polymer coating with increased thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance for protecting structural materials in heat exchange apparatuses. Chemically pure compounds such as graphene, boron nitride, tyrosine, sodium hydroxide, zinc pyrophosphate, ethyl acetate, and epoxy resin with the addition of secondary polypropylene were utilized as raw materials. The obtained coatings were evaluated using an emission scanning microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detector. Electrochemical activity was measured using standard equipment within a frequency range of 0.1–0.01 Hz. Thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance were measured at 0.24 W/m K and 9.70 Ω/cm 2 when using only epoxy resin with the addition of secondary polypropylene. When employing a composite consisting of epoxy resin with the addition of secondary polypropylene, boron nitride, graphene, tyrosine, and zinc pyrophosphate, the thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance values were 1.65 W/m K and 11.10 Ω/cm 2 , respectively. Polymer coatings containing 30% composite demonstrated the highest thermal conductivity (1.65 W/m K) and corrosion resistance (11.20 Ω/cm 2 ). The research findings can be utilized to create polymer coatings with enhanced thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance values. This polymer coatings could serve as structural materials for heat exchange devices. Highlights Corrosion resistance increase with complexing of composite coating. Thermal conductivity increase with complexing of composite coating. Use of epoxy resin with secondary polypropylene make thermal conductivity value.

This study focuses on the surface modification of substrates using a poly(N,N-dimethyl-N-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-N-[2′-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl]-ammonium chloride-co-3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate) P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA) and ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). By covalently bonding the Si-OH pendant of the copolymer with hydroxyl residues on the material's surface, a stable polymer coating is formed. The properties of P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA) coatings were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and contact angle (CA) meter. The addition of TEOS allows for the regulation of surface roughness. With the increase of TEOS content, the contact angle of underwater oil first increased and then decreased. The water contact angles were 8°, the underwater superoleophobic contact angle reached 168°, and the number of adherent platelets and Escherichia coli were significantly reduced to 7.5% and 5% on the surface of the coating, respectively. After undergoing simultaneous hydrolysis, the superoleophobic contact angle of P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA)/SiO 2 coating further increased to 174°. These interesting and robust properties make them promising candidates for biomedical applications. Highlights The underwater superoleophobic coating (contact angles of 174°). The P(CBMAE-co-TMSPMA)/SiO 2 coating with excellent resistance to oil adhesion. Solve the hydroxyl residue problem. The coating resistance to E. coli and platelet adhesion.

The utilization of biomass resources in the production of bio-based or bio-recycled polyurethanes (PUs) enhances the sustainable development and eco-friendliness of PU. Herein, a series of new bio-based aliphatic poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols were synthesized using bio-based 1,3-propanediol (bio-PDO) and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids with different chain lengths. These bio-based polyester diols and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) reacted with 4,4′-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate to produce aliphatic PU elastomers (PUEs). The study aimed to evaluate the impact of the structure of poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols on the architecture, morphology, mechanical properties, and degradation of PUEs, thereby expanding the application of bio-PDO. The results indicate a strong correlation between the degree of microphase separation, tensile properties, and degradation behavior of the synthesized PUEs and the number of methylene groups in the repeating unit of the poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols. Notably, the PUE derived from poly(propylene pimelate) diol demonstrates the highest level of microphase separation and superior elasticity properties because of the high flexibility of the polyester. On the other hand, PUE prepared from poly(propylene succinate) diol exhibits the fastest degradation performance due to its high density of ester groups. Bio-PDO based polyester diols show significant potential as raw materials for PUEs with biodegradable and adjustable mechanical properties. Highlights Poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols were prepared from bio-based 1,3-propanediol. The poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols based polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) have high tensile strength (>22 MPa) and elongation at break (>920%). The morphology, mechanical properties and degradation of PUEs are highly related to the structure of the poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols. The increasing repeating unit length of the poly(propylene dicarboxylate) diols increases elastic recovery of PUEs.

During the use, storage, or cleaning of polyetherimide (PEI) solutions, undesired white films often appear. In this study, equivalent experiments of PEI solutions involving room temperature evaporation and solvent exchange with water are conducted to simulate their air exposure and water washing processes, respectively. Specifically, we focus on investigating the phenomenon and mechanism of white appearance in their films from room temperature evaporation with a cellular-like porous structure and solvent exchange films that exhibit a finger-like porous structure. Results obtained from FE-SEM, UV–Vis spectroscopy, and Datacolor reflectance spectrophotometer indicate that both types of porous structures exhibit long-range disorderliness, leading to multiple scattering of incident light and high reflectance across the visible light spectrum resulting in a white appearance. Furthermore, due to different structures caused by phase separation, mechanical properties of solvent exchange films are significantly inferior compared with those of films from room temperature evaporation. Finally, we verify the universality of these mechanisms for white film formation in PEI through experiments using PS and PMMA. This study provides insights into efficient utilization of polymer solutions and offers new strategies for biomimetic preparation of white films. Highlights White cellular-like porous films were prepared by solvent evaporation method. White finger-like porous films were produced through solvent exchange by water. Multiple scattering caused by above porous structures led to white appearance. Finger-like porous films with nanosphere as the basic scatter unit had a luster. Universality of both white formation mechanisms was verified by PMMA and PS.
