Three series of polyimide (PI)/ZnO composite films were prepared and how their dielectric and energy storage performance is affected by particle size of the nano-ZnO fillers for the films has been systematically investigated. The EDS findings indicate that nano-ZnO particles tend to aggregate in the PI matrix with the increasing ZnO-doping amount, and the nano-ZnO particles with smaller size are more likely to aggregate with the same doping amount due to their higher activity. Profiting from the interface polarization effect between PI matrix and nano-ZnO fillers, the dielectric constant can be improved by incorporating an appropriate number of nano-ZnO fillers, but reduced by excessive doping due to the aggregation of nano-ZnO particles. The experimental results show that the dielectric properties and breakdown strength of these films are closely related to nano-ZnO particle size. For instance, the dielectric constant reaches the maximum value when the content of ZnO-30nm fillers is 0.1 wt %, but mounts to the maximum values as the fillers content for ZnO-50nm and ZnO-90nm is 0.2 wt %. The breakdown strength of PI/ZnO composite films shows a decreasing trend with increasing ZnO-30nm fillers content, while a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with increasing ZnO-50nm and ZnO-90nm fillers content, reaching the highest value when the doping amount is 0.2 wt%, respectively. The PI/ZnO-90nm films exhibit the optimal energy storage performance, and the film with 0.2 wt % ZnO content shows an U d of 4.05 J·cm −3 with an energy efficiency of 75 % under electric field strength of 425 kV/m. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been applied to study the free volume characteristics, and the correlation between interface free volume and electrical breakdown performance of PI/ZnO films has been explained.

Developing air purification systems with stability and reusability under harsh conditions remains a significant challenge. In this study, we designed a polyimide (PI) molecular structure and incorporated MXene nanosheets rich in active surface groups (–O, –OH, and –F) into the PI matrix using moisture-assisted electrospinning technology. This approach successfully constructed a biomimetic, wavy, and fluffy fiber structure. The results demonstrated that the MXene-modified PI fiber membrane exhibited outstanding superhydrophobicity (water contact angle of 151.74°), alongside superior mechanical properties (tensile strength of > 9 MPa), and thermal stability (decomposition temperature of > 500°C). The gradient pore size distribution effectively retained and captured PM while reducing air flow resistance. The fabricated filter achieved a removal efficiency of 99.99% for PM 2.5 with a low pressure drop (29.13 Pa), far lower than the 120.60 Pa pressure drop of PI OPA filters. Furthermore, the filter maintained stable filtration efficiency after five washing cycles, demonstrating excellent reusability.

Abstract The aim was to prepare copolyimide (BPDA/PMDA-PDA) films of low thermal expansion coefficient by incorporating 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic anhydride (PMDA) into polymer backbones 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA)/ p -phenylenediamine (PDA). FTIR and WAXD were used to explore the chemical and physical microstructure of the PIs films. DMA, TMA and TGA were used to characterize the mechanical and thermal performance of the PIs film respectively. The results show that the smectic structure of the film was destroyed by introducing rigid PMDA groups. The free volume fraction of polymers reached its maximum value when 40 wt % PMDA was added. The glass transition temperature of the polymers increased from 330 to 430°C and the thermal decomposition temperature declined slightly with the addition of PMDA. The inflection point in thermal expansion coefficient (CTE) of the BPDA-PDA polymers in TMA test reached as high as 470°C. The glass transition temperature of the polymers increased but the service temperature range narrowed with the addition of PMDA. The optimized PMDA concentration to obtain a best CTE was 5% as was revealed by the experimental results. The insights obtained from the experiments indicated that excessive introduction of PMDA into the polymers could increase the glass transition temperature significantly. However, the operating temperature range may be reduced. This research could offer practical and valuable references to the application for co-PI films.

Flexible piezoresistive sensors for protective textiles should maintain pressure-responsive conductivity after thermal exposure, whereas many polymer-based sensing layers soften, degrade, or lose signal output under heat. Herein, we report a self-supporting PAN/PI-derived carbon nanofibrous membrane with MXene-assisted contact modulation for heat-resistant piezoresistive sensing and temperature-triggered warning. Electrospun PAN/PAA membranes were stabilized and carbonized to construct a thermally durable conductive fibrous framework, in which PAN serves as the principal carbon-forming precursor and the PAA-derived PI intermediate assists structural retention during thermal conversion. Surface-deposited Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets further introduce conductive junctions and pressure-responsive contact interfaces. The optimized PPNF-MX3 sensor exhibits a broad pressure range of 0.05-250 kPa, a low-pressure sensitivity of 8.16 kPa-1, and response/recovery times of 520/572 ms. It retains 97.51% of its electromechanical response after 10,000 bending-release cycles at room temperature and 83.16% after 1200 cycles following thermal exposure at 350 °C for 660 s. The carbonized membrane exhibits thermal-shielding behavior and flame-induced structural retention, while the integrated system enables repeatable temperature-triggered warning at 495 °C. These results demonstrate the potential of PPNF-MX3 as a multifunctional sensing and thermal-warning platform for intelligent protective textiles exposed to demanding thermal environments.

Polyimide (PI) foam combines the advantages of both resin and porous material, but its thermal insulation and sound absorption capabilities at low- and medium-frequencies are limited. To address these limitations, composite materials with superior multifunctional performance were developed by in-situ filling a PI foam matrix with high-surface-area, low-thermal-conductivity polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSQ) aerogels. These hierarchical composites exhibit significant potential for thermal insulation and noise reduction. In this study, PMSQ aerogel/PI foam composites with hierarchical pore structure were prepared by using methyl triethoxysilane (MTES) as the silicon source, deionized water as the solvent, and PI foam as the matrix through a two-step acid-base catalyzed process, vacuum impregnation, and CO 2 supercritical drying method. Thanks to the meso-macroporous structure, the composites demonstrated excellent thermal insulation (thermal conductivity as low as 22 mW/(m·K)) and sound absorption performance. Notably, the sound absorption band shifted to the low-frequency direction compared with pure PI foam, achieving a peak absorption coefficient of 0.86 at low- and medium-frequencies for 10 mm-thick samples, coupled with an average sound transmission loss of 12 dB. The sound absorption performance of composites was simulated and verified based on the Johnson-Champoux-Allard (JCA) model, and the numerical simulation results showed good agreement with the actual experimental results. This work provides useful guidance for the microstructural design of advanced materials with integrated thermal insulation and noise reduction functions. Graphical

Herein, a series of polyimide (PI)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) organic–inorganic flexible composite microfibers with high photocatalytic performance and good reusability were prepared by combining electrospinning technology and a hydrothermal method. Under simulated sunlight, the photocatalytic characteristics of the as-prepared PI nanofibers, TiO2 nanorods, and PI/TiO2 microfibers were evaluated with photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) solution. Among the tested samples, PI/TiO2-3 mL hydrochloric acid-160 °C-14 h (PI/TiO-3-160-14) (100%) exhibited a superior photocatalytic degradation rate compared to pure PI (84.0%) and TiO2 (62.2%). The enhancement of the photocatalytic performance was attributed to the Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism. When the interface was irradiated by simulated sunlight, the band edge bending, built-in electric field, and Coulomb interaction synergistically facilitated the separation and transport of electron–hole pairs in the heterojunction. This enhanced the oxidation and reduction abilities of the valence and conduction bands of PI/TiO2. These results were adequately verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses and radical trapping experiments. Additionally, PI/TiO2 microfibers also demonstrated excellent photocatalytic activity toward methylene blue (MB, 81.4%), methyl orange (MO, 95.9%), and malachite green (KG, 98.9%), underscoring the versatile applicability of PI/TiO2. Further supplementary investigations illustrated that PI/TiO2 microfibers also possess excellent photostability during our extensive recycling photocatalytic experiments.

In order to obtain fiber membrane materials with excellent thermal insulation properties, we successfully prepared lightweight PI/PSA porous micro-nano fiber membranes by microemulsion electrospinning technology combined with calcination in this work. The morphology, tensile strength and thermal insulation properties of the fiber membranes were fully characterized. The PI/PSA micro-nano fiber membranes prepared at the PI concentration of 17 wt%, the dispersed phase/continuous phase mass ratio of 1/10, the PI/PSA mass ratio of 7/3, and the voltage of 16 kV exhibited the best morphology and the most uniform fiber diameter. Besides, the PI/PSA porous micro-nano fiber membrane obtained after calcination had excellent tensile properties (breaking stress: 10.54 ± 1.96 MPa) and thermal insulation performance (thermal conductivity: 44.7 mW·m −1 ·K −1 ). The thermal imaging and thermocouple results showed that the thermal insulation performance of PI/PSA porous micro-nano fiber membrane was superior to that of PI/PSA membrane, and the thermal insulation properties became more excellent as the number of membrane layers increased. The PI/PSA porous micro-nano fiber membrane with low thermal conductivity acquired in this work is expected to broaden the application of protective clothing.

Solid-state lithium metal batteries have attracted more and more attention in recent years because of their high safety and energy density, with developments in the new energy industry and energy storage industry. However, solid-state electrolytes are usually symmetric and are not compatible with the cathode and anode at once. In this work, a flexible asymmetric organic-inorganic composite solid-state electrolyte consisting of PI membrane, succinonitrile (SN), LiLaZrTaO(LLZTO), Poly (ethylene glycol) (PEO), and LiTFSI were prepared by solution casting successfully. This lightweight solid electrolyte is stable at a high temperature of 150°C and exhibits a wide electrochemical window of more than 6 V. Furthermore, the high ionic conductivity of the flexible solid electrolyte was 7.3 × 10−7 S/cm. The solid-state batteries assembled with this flexible asymmetric organic-inorganic composite solid electrolyte exhibit excellent performance at ambient temperature. The specific discharge capacity of coin cells using asymmetric organic-inorganic composite solid-state electrolytes was 156.56 mAh/g, 147.25 mAh/g, and 66.55 mAh/g at 0.1, 0.2, and 1C at room temperature. After 100 cycles at 0.2C, the reversible discharging capacity was 96.01 mAh/g, and Coulombic efficiency was 98%. Considering the good performance mentioned above, our designed flexible asymmetric organic-inorganic composite solid electrolyte is appropriate for next-generation solid-state batteries with high cycling stability.

The serious recombination of photogenerated carriers and the photochemical corrosion of the electrode extremely restricted its photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance, which could not reach the theoretical photocurrent intensity. However, so far, there are few comprehensive reports on the mechanism of corrosion inhibition and stability improvement of electrodes in photocatalytic degradation. In this paper, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction modified by Cobalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) co-catalyst was successfully prepared to address the aforementioned issues. Co-Pi completed the holes capture and release process through the change of its own chemical state (Co 2+/3+ →Co 4+ →Co 2+/3+ ), and also affected the energy band bending of the BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction. In addition, the effect mechanism of the Co-Pi film thickness on the PEC performance of the photoanode was systematically discussed in this report. When the deposition amount was 0.05C∙cm −2 , the photocurrent density reached 2.22 mA∙cm −2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which was 2.8 times that of bare BiVO 4 . The LSV curves, EIS and UV–vis absorption spectra reveal the enhanced PEC performance and light stability of the prepared electrode materials. When it is applied to photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, BiVO 4 /Cu 2 O/0.05Co-Pi shows high activity and potential for MB and CIP degradation, and is expected to be stably applied to the field of photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic pollutants in water.

Polyimide (PI) is a special engineering plastic, widely involved in mechanical components, instruments, and petrochemicals. However, single PI material is inevitably subject to wear and tear in practice, which leads to weakened material properties. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 was prepared to enhance the wear resistance and lubrication properties of PI by intercalating SiO 2 into the interlayer of Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets. Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 /PI composites were fabricated in two steps to test the tribological performances. SiO 2 particles change the form of interfacial friction from sliding to rolling, thus relieving direct friction between material and steel ball. So, the composites have a minimum COF (COF = 0.33) when the content of Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 is 0.80 wt%. Moreover, the average value of wear rate was 0.24 × 10 −5 mm 3 /(N·m) when Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 content was 1.60 wt%, which was 91.0% lower compared to the PI matrix. During the friction process, the abrasive chips of the material migrate to the surface of the steel ball to form a transfer film, which protects the material and thus reduces the wear rate. Therefore, the hybrids Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 are effective and important wear-resistant agents and solid lubricants to improve the wear resistance and lubricity of PI or other polymer materials. Highlights SiO 2 insert Ti 3 C 2 T x is a key factor in changing sliding friction into rolling friction, effectively reducing the COF. The average wear rate was 91.0% lower than that of the polyimide matrix when Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 content was 1.60 wt%. The minimum COF of Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 /PI composites reached 0.33 when the content of Ti 3 C 2 T x @SiO 2 was 0.80 wt%. The transfer film effectively reduces further wear of the material during friction.

Polyimide (PI) foam exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance and outstanding physical and chemical stability, making it an ideal matrix for absorbing materials. However, the growing demand for absorbing materials that can serve as load-bearing components has revealed that existing polyimide composite foams often fall short of practical application requirements due to their low mechanical properties. The study employed a simple foaming method using isocyanate-based polyimide as the foam base under a 0.2 MPa atm. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbonyl iron (CI) powder were added sequentially to the precursor solution. Under the filling parameters of 2.0 % MWCNTs and 10 % CI powder, the compressive strength of polyimide composite foam reaches 16.2 MPa and exhibits excellent microwave absorption properties, with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −62.51 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.86 GHz. Additionally, the prepared composite foam has potential infrared stealth capability. This work offers new insights for rapid and low-cost manufacturing of high-strength absorbing foam.

Synergistic coating design combining ZIF-8 and PDMS on a porous PI substrate. • Integrated multifunctionality enabling oil-water separation, photocatalytic degradation, and anti-bioadhesion. • Exceptional separation performance with a water contact angle of 162.8° for various oil-water mixtures. • Outstanding environmental durability demonstrated against mechanical abrasion, UV aging, and acid/alkali corrosion. The treatment of wastewater containing oils and organic pollutants remains a critical environmental challenge. Traditional separation membranes often lack the multifunctionality needed for simultaneous separation, degradation, and antifouling. In this study, a robust superhydrophobic composite membrane was fabricated via a facile solution-impregnation method, in which zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were integrated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) onto a porous polyimide (PI) substrate. The designed coating synergistically combines the micro-/nano-scale roughness of ZIF-8 with the low surface energy of PDMS, endowing the membrane with a water contact angle of 162.8 ± 0.3° and a sliding angle of 3.0 ± 0.4°. The composite membrane demonstrates high-efficiency separation of various oil-water mixtures (>95% efficiency, flux >9000 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), effective photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under ultraviolet (UV) light (93.7% within 2.5 h), and excellent anti-bioadhesion performance against Chlorella vulgaris. Moreover, the membrane retains its superhydrophobicity after mechanical abrasion, tape peeling, UV aging, and exposure to acidic/alkaline environments, confirming outstanding durability. This work presents a scalable strategy for developing multifunctional PI-based membranes with integrated separation, catalytic, and antifouling properties, showing promising potential for practical water remediation applications.
