Fabrication and characterization of eco-friendly PAN/PLA ultrafiltration membranes modified with onion peel-derived nanoparticles for oily wastewater treatment

Khudher Raad H.,Hasan Ahmad A.,Albayati Talib M.,Zendehboudi Sohrab,Saady Noori M. Cata

In this study, eco-friendly ultrafiltration (UF) membrane is developed using a blend of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polylactic acid (PLA) polymers. The UF membrane is modified with green additive nanoparticles (NPs) derived from onion peel waste (OPW), to enhance anti-fouling performance in oily wastewater treatment. The PAN/PLA/OPW membrane is prepared using a phase inversion technique and systematically investigated using FTIR, FE-SEM, AFM, EDX, along with contact angle measurement, porosity determination, mechanical strength testing, and surface roughness evaluation. The effects of varying OPW NP loadings (0.025–0.15 wt.%) on membrane properties and performance are examined. At a membrane loading of 0.1 wt.%, it exhibits a significant enhancement in performance, with an improvement in pure water flux to 931 L/m 2 .h from 524 L/m 2 .h for pristine PAN/PLA, driven by improved hydrophilicity (contact angle reduced from 66.8° to 34.6°), porosity (69% to 95%), and tensile strength (7.81 to 11.7 MPa). Under a feed at an oil concentration 50 ppm and a pressure 2 bar, the modified membrane achieves an oil rejection of 65.8%, which increases to 100% at 550 ppm, highlighting its strong performance at higher contaminant loads. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) reaches 95.8%, leading to enhanced anti-fouling properties. Surface roughness decreases, enhancing foulant resistance. After four operation-cleaning cycles, oil rejection efficiency remains stable with only a slight decline in flux. The modified membrane demonstrates reliable chemical and operational stability, showing its ability to operate continuously for 48 h without noticeable performance degradation, exhibiting its compatibility with water treatment environments containing complex chemical components. Utilizing low-cost agricultural waste as a source of NPs contributes to reducing the environmental footprint and promoting the concept of a circular economy within engineering solutions. The residual oil content in the effluent remains below 5 ppm, aligning with World Health Organization (WHO) environmental discharge standards. Overall, the PAN/PLA/OPW membranes demonstrate high separation efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability, thus qualifying them as promising candidates for industrial oily wastewater treatment.

Designing enzyme-CNC brick-and-concrete structured PLA film for photothermal regulation and agricultural protection applications with stage-dependent degradation

Wenhui Fu,Duo Yu,Aiping Zhan,Hou-Yong Yu

Solar-enabled thermal regulation is important for agricultural protection applications, yet it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve mechanical robustness, environmental stability, and degradability in biodegradable polymers. Here, a novel bioinspired brick-mortar-reinforcement architecture was designed to construct a multifunctional PLA-based film. In this design, the PLA matrix serves as the load-bearing 'bricks', the polydopamine-calcium carbonate stabilized enzymes act as the functional 'mortar', and the hydrophobically modified cellulose nanocrystals (DPC) function as the 'reinforcing bars', collectively forming a hierarchically integrated structure. Benefiting from this multiscale architecture, PCPM7% exhibits significantly enhanced mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 32.5 MPa and an elongation at break of 186.9%. The engineered structure also imparts excellent UV shielding (UPF 2000), improved hydrophobicity (water contact angle of 101.2°), and effective solar-to-thermal conversion, enabling stable heat retention under fluctuating environments. The embedded enzyme system enables stage-dependent biodegradation after service, achieving a mass loss of 78.3% within 180 days. This work provides a comparative design strategy for developing high-performance photothermal agricultural films.

Environmentally friendly electrospun PLA/MCC nanofibrous membranes loaded with ZnO and curcumin: Dual antibacterial and antioxidant properties for wound dressings

Zhiyan Wang,Xueqing Chai,Rui Tie,Xingzhuo Zhang,Zhaocan Li,Shuyi Zhou,Yujuan Jin,Huafeng Tian,Yan Jia

Infection and excessive oxidative stress are major challenges in wound healing. Herein, quaternary electrospun membranes were fabricated using polylactic acid (PLA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as the matrix, with zinc oxide (ZnO) and curcumin (Cur) as functional additives to achieve dual antibacterial and antioxidant functions. MCC acted as a structural reinforcer and hydrophilic modifier to improve the mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of the PLA matrix, while ZnO and Cur served as synergistic bioactive components to endow the membranes with outstanding antibacterial and antioxidant capacities. ZnO-only groups (Z1 and Z2) exhibited moderate antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In contrast, the incorporation of Cur remarkably boosted these effects. The Z1C3 sample displayed a DPPH radical scavenging rate of 64.5%, alongside antibacterial efficiencies of 71.27% against Escherichia coli and 92.04% against S. aureus . Further elevation of ZnO and Cur loading yielded superior bioactivity; Z2C5 achieved antibacterial rates of 77.38% against E. coli , 95.68% against S. aureus , and a DPPH scavenging ratio of 89.98%. These results indicate that ZnO and Cur loading can be adjusted to balance bioactivity and safety. From the biosafety perspective, Cur greatly improved biocompatibility and reduced the hemolysis rate below 5%. Overall, the PLA/MCC/ZnO/Cur nanofibrous membranes hold promise as functional wound dressing materials, offering a potential strategy for the design of sustainable and multifunctional wound care materials. Simple but efficient preparation of high-strength, heat-resistant, and high-barrier PLA/TOBC plastic packaging containers via pickering emulsion

Liyan Yi,Tongrui Zhang,Chuanhu Lu,Longxiang Tang,Guodong Ding,Chunyan Zhong,Yuguang Zhong,Guoshen Bian,Jian Wei,Huiqing Wang,Min Nie

Bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) with degradable, environmentally friendly and bio-friendly properties has become important sustainable material. However, the inherent disadvantages of PLA, such as weak crystallization ability, poor thermal stability, and poor barrier properties, limit its application in areas such as Plastic packaging-Containers. In this paper, a simple but efficient method was established to decrease effect of inherent disadvantages of PLA and expand its application, is by pickering emulsion. Food sources bacterial cellulose blocks were oxidized and followed high-pressure homogenization to prepare nano-bacterial cellulose (TOBC) as amphiphilic emulsifier, then TOBC nanofibers coated/stabilized PLA microspheres were prepared via pickering emulsion method, that avoiding the problem of interface separation between nanocellulose and PLA. As a result, TOBC served as a heterogeneous nucleating agent to greatly improve the crystallization behavior of PLA, boosting the crystallinity of the composite from 21.8 % to 49.6 %. After hot-pressing or injection processing to a shaped material, the prepared PLA/TOBC composites exhibited the excellent combined properties with tensile strength of 66.2 MPa, flexural strength of 81.22 MPa, impact strength of 2.72 kJ/m 2 and Vicat softening temperature of 167.3 °C. Meanwhile, TOBC addition also greatly improved the oxygen barrier ability of the composite, and the oxygen transmission rate was reduced from 143.77 cm 3 /(cm 2 -24h-0.1 MPa) for PLA to 16.01 cm 3 /(cm 2 -24h-0.1 MPa) for PLA/TOBC-3. This means that PLA/TOBC composites are expected to be used as environmentally friendly Plastic packaging-containers with high barrier capacity, providing new ideas for the development of Plastic packaging products.

Synergistic Enhancement of PLA Nanocomposites via Functionalized CNTs and MOFs: Multifunctional Improvements in Mechanical Strength, Thermal Stability, and Biomedical Compatibility

Lei Huang,Xin Ling,Linhui Huang,Feng Wei,Santosh K Tiwari,Xinyu Chen,Fei Ma,Fangdi Huang,Nannan Wang,Yanqiu Zhu,Dahai Yu

In pursuit of a sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-derived polymers, this study aims to enhance the comprehensive performance of polylactic acid (PLA). Despite its inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability, the intrinsic brittleness of PLA significantly restricts its broader applicability, particularly in the medical domain. To overcome this limitation, we utilized the Hummers method to functionalize the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with carboxylic acid groups, followed by a green and highly efficient solution-mixing approach to immobilize the modified CNTs onto the surface of HKUST-1, a metal-organic framework (MOF). The resulting inorganic-organic nanocomposite, denoted as CNTₘ/HKUST-1, was uniformly integrated into a PLA matrix via a mechanical hot-pressing technique, yielding the CNTₘ/MOF-PLA composite. This composite exhibited remarkable enhancements in mechanical properties, including tensile strength, modulus, and fracture toughness, alongside improved thermal stability. Furthermore, it demonstrated exceptional antibacterial efficacy against *Staphylococcus aureus* and Escherichia coli, coupled with outstanding biocompatibility and minimal cytotoxicity. The green synthesis strategy employed herein positions the CNTₘ/MOF-PLA composite as a highly promising material for applications in tissue engineering and advanced biomedical devices.

Thermo-sensitive drug controlled release PLA core/PNIPAM shell fibers fabricated using a combination of electrospinning and UV photo-polymerization

Hongwei Zhang,Qijian Niu,Ning Wang,Jun Nie,Guiping Ma

In this research a thermo-sensitive drug loaded core–shell fibers were prepared by UV photo-polymerization combined with electrospinning technology. The biodegradable polymer polylactic acid (PLA) was used as the core with electrospinning and the N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was selected to be shell of the fibers via UV photo-polymerization, respectively. Combretastatin A4 (CA4) was used as the model drug loaded in PLA (core structure) to test the thermo-sensitivity of the core–shell fibers. SEM was performed to observe the morphology of the fibers. TEM was carried out to confirm the core–shell structure of the fibers. Furthermore, XPS and FTIR results demonstrated that the core–shell structure had been fabricated as designed. Water contact angle (WCA) test indicated that the fibers show different wettability when the temperature was below or above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Moreover, in vitro drug release test was conducted to explore the difference of the drug release when the temperature was at 25   °C and 40   °C. The cell culture studies showed that the prepared core–shell structure nanofibers have a potential application in the biomedical fields as tissue engineering.

Mirror assembly of spherical chitosan-based additives: Towards a circular revolution of PLA from high-value applications to soil degradation

Zejie Huang,Libo Hu,Jiahui Hong,Yanqiao Jin,Lei Xiong,Yongqian Shi

Polylactic acid (PLA) is recognized as a promising alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics due to its excellent biodegradability and well-balanced mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the disadvantages of PLA such as flammability in fire, susceptibility to UV light attack, and slow natural degradation rate limit its application and recovery in high-security areas. In this work, a spherical chitosan-based additive DMPC-Al with mirror-symmetric internal structure was assembled by layer-by-layer electrostatic reactions, resulting in PLA characterized excellent comprehensive performances. When 7 wt% DMPC-Al was added into PLA, the LOI value of the composite PLA/7DMPC-Al was increased to 29.6%, and UL-94 reached V-0 grade without any molten droplets. The peak heat release rate and total heat release rate were reduced by 13.5% and 16.2%, respectively, and the carbon layer was highly self-expanding. In addition, the UPF of PLA/7DMPC-Al was increased to 34.45 from 0.45 of pure PLA, blocking most of the UV light attacks and extending the service life of PLA. Surprisingly, DMPC-Al actually improved the impact toughness of PLA by 38.5% and facilitated PLA to work continuously when drawing large curved shapes by 3D printing. More importantly, the introduction of DMPC-Al changed the sensitivity of PLA to water and provided sufficient energy for microbial growth, thus accelerating the degradation rate of PLA in the soil under abandoned buildings. This work provides a practical and feasible strategy to achieve multifunctionality of degradable plastics.

Bio-inspired, biodegradable, and fluffy 3D PLA fibrous sponges with dynamic fractal nano-sweepers for on-demand oil/water separation

Jing Zhou,Zhao Zhang,Xianglong Li,Bin Yang

Frequent oil leakage results in a huge waste of fossil fuel resources and severely threatens the global water-waste-energy nexus. Membrane separation technology is a promising effective and energy-saving approach for recycling waste oil resources and oily-environment remediation. Despite many bioinspired materials with the mitigated selectivity/permeability trade-off having been developed, a significant issue has been ignored, that is, most of the membranes are non-biodegradable and could cause secondary environmental pollution. In this work, inspired by the natural 3D coral organisms with sustainable fiber tentacles; we propose a biomimetic crystal-engineering strategy of space-confined solvent-induced recrystallization to prepare a 3D biodegradable PLA fibrous sponge with coral-like nanoflower/honeycomb sweeper arrays. By virtue of the coral-like nanoporous fractal arrays with superhydrophobicity and proactive fouling resistance, the resulting PLA sponge exhibits excellent separation performance of immiscible oil–water mixtures (ultrahigh permeation flux of up to 27,908 L m -2 h −1 ) and water-in-oil emulsions (high separation efficiency of up to 99.9 %). Significantly, with the advantage of biodegradability and recyclability of PLA, we envision such environmentally friendly PLA fibrous sponges would show promising potential in the fields of environmental remediation, oil recovery, self-cleaning, etc.

Fabrication and characterization of PVA@PLA electrospinning nanofibers embedded with Bletilla striata polysaccharide and Rosmarinic acid to promote wound healing

Guofeng Zhong,Mengyu Qiu,Junbo Zhang,Fuchen Jiang,Xuan Yue,Chi Huang,Shiyi Zhao,Rui Zeng,Chen Zhang,Yan Qu

In this study, a novel nanofiber material with Polylactic acid (PLA), natural plant polysaccharides- Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) and Rosmarinic acid (RA) as the raw materials to facilitate wound healing was well prepared through coaxial electrospinning. The morphology of RA-BSP-PVA@PLA nanofibers was characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the successful formation of core-shell structure was verified under confocal laser microscopy (CLSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). RA-BSP-PVA@PLA exhibited suitable air permeability for wound healing, as indicated by the result of the water vapor permeability (WVTR) study. The results of tension test results indicated the RA-BSP-PVA@PLA nanofiber exhibited excellent flexibility and better accommodates wounds. Moreover, the biocompatibility of RA-BSP-PVA@PLA was examined through MTT assay. Lastly, RA-BSP-PVA@PLA nanofibers can induce wound tissue growth, as verified by the rat dorsal skin wound models and tissue sections. Furthermore, RA-BSP-PVA@PLA can facilitate the proliferation and transformation of early wound macrophages, and down-regulate MPO + expression of on the wound, thus facilitating wound healing, as confirmed by the result of immunohistochemical. Thus, RA-BSP-PVA@PLA nanofibers show great potential as wound dressings in wound healing.

Control of Surface Wrinkles on Shape Memory PLA/PPDO Micro-nanofibers and Their Applications in Drug Release and Anti-scarring

Wang Lu,Ma Jingyi,Guo Tao,Zhang Fenghua,Dong Aimeng,Zhang Shiqi,Liu Yanju,Yuan Huiping,Leng Jinsong

Micro- and nano-fibers of shape memory polymers (SMP) offer multiple advantages like high specific surface area, porosity, and intelligence, and are suitable for biomedical applications. In this study, biodegradable poly (p-dioxanone) (PPDO) materials were incorporated to improve the brittleness of shape memory polylactic acid (PLA), and plasticizers were used to reduce the transition temperature of SMP composites such that their transitions could be induced close to body temperature. Furthermore, an electrostatic spinning technology was applied to prepare SMP fibers with wrinkled structures and regulate their microstructures and morphologies such that the intelligent transition of wrinkled and smooth morphologies can be achieved on the fiber surface. The application of this controllable-morphology fiber membrane in intelligent controlled drug release and scar inhibition after Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV) implantation was also studied. The drug release from the stretched and deformed drug-loaded fiber membranes was faster than those from membranes with the original shape. This membrane with micro- and nano-fibers had good anti-scarring effects that improved after drug loading. The achievement of intelligent controlled drug release and the evident anti-scarring effects of the membrane broaden the application of SMP fibers in the biomedical field. Graphical Abstract

Achieving high flame retardancy, crystallization and biodegradability PLA based on 1 wt% addition of novel fully bio-based flame retardant

Jian Xu,Junhao Fei,Tao Tang,Meng Ma,Yanqin Shi,Huiwen He,Si Chen,Xu Wang

In this paper, a bio-based flame retardant PA-AR is synthesized, which endows PLA with good flame retardant and crystallization properties, and at the same time promotes the biodegradability of PLA. Only 1 wt% PA-AR makes the LOI value of PLA reach 26.8% and reaches UL-94 V-0 level. In addition, 1 wt% PA-AR increases the crystallinity of PLA to 23.4%, which increased by 460% compared with PLA. Further, due to the increase of crystallinity, the tensile strength is also improved. Besides, the addition of PA-AR can greatly promote the degradation performance of PLA under specific biological conditions. This work proposed a novel method to obtain completely biodegradable flame retardant composites.

Examining and Delivery and Retention of a Paclitaxel Nano-Drug in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Tissues

Mou Fengping,Xiao Li,Xu Yuanqin

This study aims to investigate the therapeutic effect of a paclitaxel-loaded nano-drug (PTX-mPEGPLA) on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). PTX-mPEG-PLA nanoparticle (NP) was prepared by loading paclitaxel into the mPEG-PLA nanoparticle and purified by a thin-film hydration method. C57BL/6 mice were used to establish a murine OSCC model. The mice were treated with saline control (G1), paclitaxel (G2), or PTX-mPEG-PLA NPs (G3). After 4 weeks of differential treatment, the saliva of mice in the G1, G2, and G3 groups was collected to detect the concentration of protein markers of OSCC. Also, venous blood and cancer tissues of mice in the three groups were collected for drug concentration measurements. The paclitaxel concentration and retention in G3 mice were significantly higher and more prolonged than those in G2 mice, respectively (P < 0.05). Compared to the level of OSCC protein markers in the saliva of mice in G1 and G2 that in G3 was the lowest. PTX-mPEG-PLA NPs demonstrates effective targeting in the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma in mice. It can deliver the drug to the cancerous tissues, increase the drug retention in the same tissues, and effectively inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of malignant tumors.
