Revealing the Impact of the Binder Content on Solvent-Free PTFE-Based SiOx/C Composite Electrodes for High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

Detao Kong,Qinghua Yang,Yaolong He,Hongjiu Hu

Solvent-free electrode fabrication technologies present a promising alternative to conventional wet processes, lowering lithium-ion battery production costs while improving the energy density and manufacturing efficiency. In this study, solvent-free SiOx/C composite electrodes were prepared via polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibrillation to explore their potential for high-energy-density lithium-ion battery applications. The impact of the PTFE content on the mechanical properties, morphological characteristics, and electrochemical performances of the composite electrodes was systematically investigated. The experimental results demonstrate that PTFE-based SiOx/C electrodes with 5% binder content exhibit optimal fracture elongation and cycling stability. Comparative analysis shows that at equal binder content, solvent-free PTFE-based electrodes exhibit over 20 times higher fracture elongation than conventional wet-processed electrodes and maintain superior structural integrity during charge/discharge cycling. Additionally, the solvent-free process yields a denser microstructure, achieving up to 117.6% higher volumetric capacity compared to wet-processed electrodes.

Core-shell heterostructure ZnO@ZIF-8 nanorods anchored within PTFE fibrous networks for the durable removal of cationic dye and Cu2+ in wastewater

Hao Zhan,Wenlong Chen,Xingyu Pei,Hao Wang,Bing Zhao,Xiefei Wang,Qingqing Liang,Yukang Xu,Weiwei Zhu

Highly diffuse cationic dyes and copper ions are normal pollutants in dye wastewater and pose a potential ecological risk, threatening human health. However, current MOF-based fibrous composites usually scarify their stability of active sites for photocatalytic reaction, which inevitably causes nondurable removal of these diffuse particles. Here, an in situ growth strategy was proposed to fabricate robust core-shell heterostructure of ZnO@ZIF-8 nanorods which were anchored within polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) micro-scale fibers by the solution-blowing spinning (SBS) technique to achieve ZnO@ZIF-8/PTFE hierarchical fibrous networks (ZZP-HFN). It presents superior degradation of cationic dyes (over 97%) and durable decompose stability of more than 20 cycles, and prominent adsorption capacity for copper ions (86.53 mg/g). Moreover, contrast to the existing MOF-based fibrous membranes, ZZP-HFN exhibits the self-cleaning performance on account of its stable composite structure between ZnO@ZIF-8 nanorods and PTFE fiber. The cationic dyes removal of ZZP-HFN from wastewater is attributed to the synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic ability. This work provides an insight to design advanced MOF-based composites with durable photocatalytic performance for dye wastewater purification.

Mass transfer performance and correlation for CO2 absorption into aqueous 1-Dimethylamino-2-propanol (1DMA2P) solution in a PTFE hollow fiber membrane contactor

Fan Cao,Hongxia Gao,Ge Gao,Zhiwu Liang

1-Dimethylamino-2-propanol (1DMA2P), a tertiary amine, has been regarded as the promising absorbent with relative higher reaction rate and high capacity for CO 2 capture. The CO 2 absorption into aqueous 1-Dimethylamino-2-propanol (1DMA2P) solution in the polytetrafluoroethene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) was firstly studied experimentally in the present work. The CO 2 absorption performance in terms of the CO 2 absorption flux was comprehensively investigated by considering a series of operating parameters, including liquid velocity, gas velocity, liquid phase temperature, CO 2 partial pressure, initial lean CO 2 loading in the liquid phase, amine concentration and flow orientations. The experimental results indicated increasing liquid velocity can significantly enhance CO 2 absorption performance over a reasonable range of liquid velocities while similar trends were observed by increasing gas velocity, liquid temperature, CO 2 partial pressure and amine concentration properly. By contrast, there was a severe loss of CO 2 absorption flux with increase in lean CO 2 loading. Counter-current flow achieved the improvement of CO 2 absorption performance compared to co-current flow. Besides, to predict the CO 2 absorption performance at various operating parameters, satisfactory correlations of K G and J CO₂ were proposed for the 1DMA2P-CO 2 system.

Mechanistic understanding of the participation effect of carbon in the combustion of PTFE/n-Al: Combining experimental verification with reactive molecular dynamics simulation

Gang Li,Chuande Zhao,Qian Yu,Jie Chen,Fang Yang

Owing to the high energy density, polytetrafluoroethylene/aluminum nanoparticles (PTFE/n-Al) has been considered as the promising composite in energetic applications, but the limited combustion efficiency restricts its practical uses. Undoubtedly, for the further improvement of combustion efficiency, mechanistic understanding of the combustion of PTFE/n-Al is fundamentally necessary. However, the participation effect of non-fluorine species (i.e., carbon) on combustion has been overlooked, leading to the lack of generalized framework for combustion mechanism. By using a combined experimental verification and reactive molecular dynamics (RMD) simulation approach, this work focuses on the participation effect of carbon and involved reaction mechanism in the combustion of PTFE/n-Al. The thermal reactivity and combustion performance of four PTFE/n-Al composites with F/Al molar ratio of 1.0 (R1), 2.0 (R2), 3.0 (R3) and 4.0 (R4) have been investigated by thermal analyses (TGA-DSC-MS) and combustion experiments (flame images, heat of reaction and condensed combustion products). The heat of reaction decreases in the order of R2 (7.89 kJ/g), R1 (7.67 kJ/g), R3 (7.33 kJ/g) and R4 (6.55 kJ/g), and a similar trend has been found for the flame intensity. Moreover, the carbon deposition percentage (%) in combustion of R1, R2, R3 and R4 reaches 76.5%, 76.4%, 90.2% and 123.3%, which shows a negative effect on combustion performance. Based on experimental results, the RMD simulations for the reactions of n-Al and Al core with trafluoroethylene (TFE) and related fluorocarbon atmospheres have been performed. It is found that, going from R1 to R4, the elevated active fluorocarbon species play a double-edged sword role in combustion. On one side, they exhibit a promoting role in accelerating the crack of Al 2 O 3 shell, the dispersion and heat releasing kinetics of Al core. On the other side, they also result in extensive carbon deposition on unreacted n-Al, showing a hindering role in further reaction and lowering combustion efficiency. Accordingly, in experiments, optimal combustion performance of PTFE/n-Al has been observed with suitable composition (R2). Finally, the generalized reaction mechanism involving participation effects of carbon and fluorine has been proposed for PTFE/n-Al, which is beneficial for perfecting combustion mechanism and improving combustion efficiency of fluorocarbon/metal composites.

Revealing promotion of interfacial Pt–O–Fe oxygen bridge structure in PtFe/graphene synthesized by a four-electrode electrochemical system on water splitting

He Xiao,Xuemin Yang,Man Zhao,Rong Zhang,Yanying Jing,Li Zhang,Yingluo He,Haishun Wu,Jianfeng Jia

To promote kinetic rate of half reactions in water splitting, we synthesized a bifunctional PtFe/graphene with dual active sites by a facile self-designed four-electrode electrochemical method . Characterization data indicate interfacial oxygen bridge structure of Pt–O–Fe is expectedly formed and electrons transfer from Fe to Pt via this bridge structure. This unique interfacial structure not only regulates electronic structure of Pt and Fe, but also offers interfacial electron-transfer channel to improve overall conductivity, which essentially enhances intrinsic activity towards acidic HER and alkaline OER . For HER , the best Pt–Fe/G shows the mass activity of 4239.3 mA mg −1 at −0.063 V, 3.79 times higher than that of Pt/G (1118.5 mA mg −1 ) and 5.02 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (843.1 mA mg −1 ) catalyst, respectively. Introduction of Fe to Pt decreases the energy barrier of HER process (ΔG∗), and results in conversion of rate-limiting step from H + adsorption (Volmer step) to H∗ desorption (Tafel step). For OER , the greatest PtFe/G exhibits an overpotential of lower 26 mV (10 mA cm-2) than commercial RuO 2 and its mass activity is 16.7 times higher than Fe/G. The formed Pt–O–Fe bond effectively elevates the electrophilic properties and facilitates adsorption of OH − , contributing to the change of rate-limiting step and enormous decrease of reaction activation energy (E a ). This work inspires researchers to construct efficient interfacial oxygen bridge structure to enhance electrocatalytic performance for water splitting and design novel electrochemical method for synthesis of graphene-based composites.

Sampling and SERS detection of pesticides in air and water using a bifunctional PTFE membrane functionalized with high-index Au trisoctahedrons and ZIF-67

Xinyuan Zhao,Hui Pan,Wenwen Chen,Wei Zhang,Chuanxi Liu,Mengjie Wang,Ming Shang,Cuijuan Wang

High index facets of Au TOHs/ZIF-67/PTFE enables good sensitivity. • Supports air sampling and testing suitable for on-site settings. • Applicable to both airborne and aqueous samples for versatile monitoring. • Rapid detection (<5 min) for practical use. Monitoring of pesticides in air and water is essential for assessing occupational exposure and ensuring environmental safety. In this study, an integrated point-of-use (POU) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform based on a high-index Au trisoctahedrons (Au TOHs)/zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67)-decorated polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane was developed for the rapid sampling and in situ detection of carbaryl (CBR), diquat (DQ), and paraquat (PQ) in air and water. The high-index facets of Au TOHs generate abundant plasmonic “hot spots”, thereby enhancing the sensitivity of SERS, while the porous PTFE film and ZIF-67 provide efficient analyte enrichment. The entire detection process was completed within 5 min. The bifunctional SERS-active substrate exhibited good thermal stability, spatial uniformity, reproducibility, and long-term stability. Strong linear relationships between SERS intensity of characteristic peaks and logarithmic analyte concentrations were obtained for CBR, DQ, and PQ in airborne and aqueous environments, with detection limits of 0.0044–0.94 ppb. In addition, the platform demonstrated good selectivity against interfering pesticides and satisfactory recovery rates. The results were consistent with conventional analytical methods, confirming the reliability of the proposed approach. This work provides a promising strategy for rapid on-site monitoring of pesticide contaminants in environmental media. Download: Download high-res image (620KB) Download: Download full-size image

PTFE decorated and carbon nanotube threaded HKUST-1 MOF-derived Cu nanoparticles@porous carbon integrated gas diffusion electrode for efficient CO2-to-C2+ conversion

Jingyun Guo,Bo Yang,Panyouwen Zhang,Changchao Yan,Lei Wang,Zhizhen Ye,Hongmei Chen,Xinsheng Peng

Gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) are promising for electrical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 RR). Conventional laminate GDEs often suffer from unstable catalyst-substrate interfaces, flooding, salt precipitation, limited active sites, and low efficiency. These challenges call for new architectures designation that ensure both accessible active sites and robust GDE interfaces. Here, we propose a filtration-based fabrication method combined with an in situ expansion strategy to construct PTFE decorated and carbon nanotube threaded HKUST-1 MOFs derived Cu nanoparticles (NPs)@porous carbon (denoted as Cu NPs@CNT) membrane in which MOF-derived Cu NPs are tightly embedded within the porous carbons threaded by a highly conductive CNT network. The interpenetrating structure enlarges gas channels, exposes abundant Cu sites, and minimizes contact resistance, enabling efficient CO 2 delivery and electron transfer. Combining these structural advantages with a highly hydrophobic surface, the resulting Cu NPs@CNT integrated gas diffusion electrode demonstrates a maximum C 2+ Faradaic efficiency of 49.0%, and a C 2+ partial current density of 193 mA·cm −2 at a total current density of 400 mA·cm −2 . This work shows a facile structure-engineering route for efficient CO 2 RR integrated GDEs.

One-step catechol-based biomimetic strategy to fabricate organic-inorganic hybrid coatings on PTFE flat membrane for the improvement of hydrophilicity and fouling resistance

Yunying Luo,Chengcai Li,Jieqi Wang,Sikuai Xue,Feng Wang,Hailin Zhu,Yuhai Guo

Recently, plant polyphenols had been proved to be potential candidates for dopamine because of their low-cost and similar coating ability. In this paper, a facile method was developed to modify the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) flat microfiltration (MF) membrane via the co-deposition of catechol (CA) and silane coupling agent for the improvements of hydrophilicity and anti-fouling property. The membrane performance can be tuned by changing the concentration of silane coupling agent. After using this cheap and simple modification method, the PTFE flat membrane was endowed with excellent hydrophilicity, high water permeation flux and superior anti-fouling property. Moreover, interestingly, a colorless membrane was obtained by this method. Then, the anti-fouling test was conducted on the modified PTFE flat membranes. The as-prepared hydrophilic PTFE flat membranes possess excellent bovine serum albumin (BSA) fouling resistance. Finally, the surface stability of the modified membrane was studied and the modified membrane shows excellent stability under the acidic condition but weak to strong alkali.

RETRACTED ARTICLE: Effects of Copper Nanoparticles Located in Different Regions of Polytetrafluoroethylene/Polyimide Blends on the Morphology, Mechanical and Tribological Properties of PTFE Composites

Zhao Yuanliang,Qi Xiaowen,Zhang Wenli,Fan Bingli,Yang Qingxiang

The effects of copper nanoparticles (Cu) located in different regions of polytetrafluoroethylene/polyimide (PTFE/PI) blends on the morphology, thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties of PTFE composites were studied. Region one is PI phases (the corresponding composites is denoted as PPC), region two is PTFE phases and the interface between PTFE and PI (the corresponding composites is denoted as PPC-m). Results indicate that the incorporation of Cu nanoparticles into PI phases improves the dispersibility and homogeneity of PI phases. As a consequence, the crystallinity of PTFE composites is reduced, but compressive strength and modulus of PTFE composites are enhanced by 50.3% and 14.4% respectively. In addition, self-lubricity and wear resistance of PTFE composites are improved by 10.4% and 50.5%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrates that PI phases with Cu nanoparticles hinder the direct contact between PTFE matrix and counterparts. However, Cu nanoparticles located in PTFE matrix and the interface between PTFE and PI deteriorates the dispersibility and homogeneity of PI phases, which lead to the poor mechanical and tribological performance of PTFE composites.

Experimental studies on mass transfer performance for CO2 absorption into aqueous N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) based solutions in a PTFE hollow fiber membrane contactor

Fan Cao,Hongxia Gao,Qian Xiong,Zhiwu Liang

CO 2 absorption performance for various blended N ,N- dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) solutions in the presence of absorption promoters including Monoethanolamine (MEA), Piperazine (PZ), 2-(Ethylamino)ethanol (EAE), 2-(Methylamino)ethanol (MAE) and 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) was investigated in terms of CO 2 absorption flux by using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane contactor. The experimental results show that the CO 2 absorption flux increases with a reasonable increase in liquid velocity, liquid temperature and total amine concentration. Also, the CO 2 absorption flux can increase by increasing gas velocity, CO 2 partial pressure but decrease with the increased lean CO 2 loading. In addition, it can be found that all of the investigated activated amines can improve the CO 2 absorption flux of aqueous DMEA solution. For fresh amine solution, the order of CO 2 absorption flux for the investigated amine blends can be ranked as: DMEA < DMEA + AMP < DMEA + MEA < DMEA + EAE < DMEA + MAE < DMEA + PZ. By contrast, for the amine solution with CO 2 loading of over 0.3 mol/mol, the order has also changed accordingly and can be ranked as: DMEA < DMEA + AMP < DMEA + EAE < DMEA + MAE < DMEA + MEA < DMEA + PZ. The DMEA + PZ mixture presents a significant improvement up to 52.44% in CO 2 absorption flux compared to that of single DMEA solution, and can be considered as a promising alternative for CO 2 capture.

Facile Sol-Gel Synthesis of PTFE@Al Core-Shell Powders for Enhanced Curing Depth in UV-Curing-Assisted Direct Ink Writing of Composite Solid Propellants

Kai Miao,Zi-chen Wang,Lu Wang,Yang Ran,Heng Xue,Shuang Gao,Sheng Huang,Di-chen Li

UV-curing-assisted direct ink writing (DIW) is an established additive manufacturing technique for composite solid propellants, facilitating the development aerospace propulsion systems. However, direct application to aluminum (Al)-containing propellant slurries leads to limited curing depth, attributed to the high UV absorbance of aluminum powder. To address this limitation, we propose a novel surface modification strategy in which aluminum powders are coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), yielding PTFE@Al composite powders with a core-shell structure. UV absorbance measurements show that PTFE coatings reduce the absorbance of aluminum powder by approximately 63%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed the uniformity and integrity of the PTFE coatings. Thermogravimetric (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses indicate that PTFE coating significantly enhances the energy release of aluminum powder, achieving an exothermic heat output of 2.19 kJ·g -1 below 1400 °C-approximately three times that of uncoated aluminum. Furthermore, curing tests on formulations containing PTFE@Al powders demonstrated an approximate 15% increase in curing depth. These results demonstrate that PTFE@Al composite powders not only overcome the limitations of aluminum’s UV absorption but also significantly enhance photocuring efficiency and energetic output. This work presents an innovative material design strategy and a practical route for additive manufacturing of high-performance solid propellant grains.

Rapid conversion of hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membranes to superhydrophilic ones by surface polydopamine coating accelerated by sodium periodate (NaIO4) and crosslinked with polyethyleneimine

Jiangrong Chen,Guochang Liu,Chungang Guo,Chunju Song,Huifeng Zhang

Superhydrophilic PTFE hollow fiber membranes were achieved through a rapid PDA/PEI coating under oxidation of NaIO 4. • PDA/PEI-coated membranes showed pure water flux of 3665 L/m 2 ·h, 277 L/m 2 ·h for saturated brine with turbidity removals ≥ 99%. • NaIO 4 expedited PDA coating, whereas PEI was responsible either for accelerated PDA coating or improved hydrophilicity. PTFE is an excellent membrane material for water treatment because of its outstanding chemical resistance and thermal stability. However, its inherent surface hydrophobicity restricts its use in water treatment. Recently, bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) has been used to surface hydrophilization of PTFE membranes. Nonetheless, a single PDA surface coating on PTFE membranes offers only limited improvements in hydrophilicity and requires a lengthy reaction time. In this study, we present a rapid PDA surface coating process for PTFE hollow fiber membranes that leverages the stronger oxidizing power of sodium periodate (NaIO 4 ) and the crosslinking capabilities of polyethyleneimine (PEI) to accelerate PDA polymerization and improve hydrophilicity. Characterization results, in terms of membrane morphology, surface composition, wettability, and water permeation/filtration tests, collectively show that the inclusion of NaIO 4 and PEI during PDA coating accelerates the co-deposition of PDA/PEI on PTFE membrane surfaces and produces membranes with superhydrophilicity: a 3-hour PDA/PEI coating on hydrophobic PTFE membranes results in water contact angles near 0° and water fluxes up to 3665 L/m 2 ·h with pure water feed and 277 L/m 2 ·h with saturated salt brine feed under 0.1 MPa applied presure, while achieving over 99% of turbidity removal rate. Comparing membranes coated with PDA alone to those coated with PDA and NaIO 4 highlights the roles of each additive: NaIO 4 enhances dopamine polymerization rate, while PEI accelerates PDA coating through cross-linking and contributes to superhydrophilicity via its -NH groups. The PDA/PEI-coated membranes also maintain stable water permeability after cycles of drying and exposure to acidic, alkaline, and oxidative environments. This work provides insights into PDA/PEI coating processes on PTFE membranes and supports future development of hydrophilic PTFE membranes for practical water treatment.
