The monitoring of body temperature is critical for assessing the health conditions of a critically ill patient. Flexible temperature sensors provide direct contact with human skin, ensuring stable and continuous monitoring of a person’s body temperature. In this study, an affordable and readily available polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as the polymer matrix for fabricating a wearable temperature sensor. Through a simple solution mixing process, both conductive carbon black (CB) and ionic liquid were uniformly dispersed in the flexible PVDF composite for enhancing its conductivity and stability. The influence of CB addition amounts was investigated with respect to surface morphology, microstructure, and properties. The results showed that the composite with 6% CB addition had the highest sensitivity of 3.07%/°C, with a minimum detectable temperature difference of 1°C and short response/recovery times of 6.66 s/15.63 s at Δ T = 10°C. Additionally, the response/recovery curves of this device demonstrated good cycle stability. Furthermore, the sensor retained its superior performance even after extended operational periods, confirming the long-term stability and reliability of this thin-film sensor. The sensor shows great promise for physiological signal detection and holds substantial potential for applications in wearable electronics. This work offers a new possibility for the low-cost, large-scale fabrication of flexible temperature sensors in the future. Graphical

To improve interfacial condition and mechanical properties of basalt/carbon fiber reinforced polymer (BCFRP) laminates, this study innovatively employed a double electrospinning technique to prepare multi-directional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) fiber veils on carbon fiber (CF) fabric surfaces. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) confirmed the uniform distribution of fluorine, verifying the successful anchoring of PVDF onto the CF fabric. With systematically varied areal densities (0.1-0.5 g/m²), the PVDF veils demonstrated a substantial enhancement in mechanical performance, with the 0.4 g/m² density identified as optimal. This specific formulation yielded remarkable flexural and compressive strengths of 529.26 MPa and 248.08 MPa, corresponding to significant improvements of 37.9% and 43.6%, respectively, over the unreinforced specimen. Microstructural analysis via X-ray microscopy (XRM-CT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the multi-directional PVDF veils established continuous fiber bridges at the interlaminar interface. These bridges provided a better fracture resistance to prevent the generation and propagation of micro-cracks, promoting failure mode variation from traditional dominated delamination to shear-dominated failure. This work established a novel technical pathway for developing high-performance PVDF@BCFRP laminates, presenting a viable alternative to traditional CFRP composites for civil applications.

In this paper, a series of the functionalized graphenes, such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH), reduce carboxylated graphene oxide (rGOCOOH), fluorinated graphene oxide (GOF), and reduce fluorinated graphene oxide (rGOF), were successfully fabricated, and were introduced into the Poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix to form composites. The effects of these functional groups on dielectric properties of GO/PVDF composites were systematically investigated. The results show that the reduced functional graphene/PVDF composites (rGOCOOH/PVDF, rGOF/PVDF) exhibit more excellent dielectric properties than that of composite samples without undergoing the reduction reaction (GOCOOH/PVDF, GOF/PVDF). The reduced samples not only possess high dielectric constant, but also maintain lower dielectric loss. And, the rGOCOOH/PVDF composite has better dielectric properties (εr = 17.64, tgδ = 0.031) than others, due to strong interfacial and dipolar interactions between PVDF matrix and fillers. These results could be used as a guide to tune dielectric properties of polymer/ graphene composites for their applications in embedded capacitors.

As one of the most promising candidates for all-solid-state sodium-ion batteries and sodium-metal batteries, polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and amorphous hexafluoropropylene (HFP) copolymerized polymer solid electrolytes still suffer from a relatively low room temperature ionic conductivity. To modify the properties of PVDF-HEP copolymer electrolytes, we introduce the graphitic C3N4(g−C3N4) nanosheets as a novel nanofiller to form g−C3N4composite solid polymer electrolytes (CSPEs). The analysis shows that the g−C3N4filler can not only modify the structure in g−C3N4CSPEs by reducing the crystallinity, compared to the PVDF−HFP solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), but also promote a further dissociation with the sodium salt through interaction between the surface atoms of the g−C3N4and the sodium salt. As a result, enhanced electrical properties such as ionic conductivity, Na+transference number, mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composite electrolyte can be observed. In particular, a low Na deposition/dissolution overpotential of about 100 mV at a current density of 1 mA cm−2was found after 160 cycles with the incorporation of g−C3N4. By applying the g−C3N4CSPEs in the sodium-metal battery with Na3V2(PO4)3cathode, the coin cell battery exhibits a lower polarization voltage at 90 mV, and a stable reversible capacity of 93 mAh g−1after 200 cycles at 1 C.

In this study, a photocatalytic biochar-TiO 2 (C–Ti) composite was prepared using lignin as carbon precursor, and blended with PVDF polymer to fabricate PVDF/C–Ti MMMs via non-solvent induced phase inversion. The prepared membrane demonstrates both 1.5 times higher initial and recovered fluxes than the similarly prepared PVDF/TiO 2 membrane, suggesting the C–Ti composite can help maintain higher photodegradation efficiency and better anti-fouling performance. In addition, the comparison of PVDF/C–Ti membrane against pristine PVDF membrane show that the reversible fouling and photodegradation reversible fouling of BSA increased from 10.1% to 6.4%–35.1% and 26.6%, respectively. And the FRR of PVDF/C–Ti membrane was 62.12%, 1.8 times that of PVDF membrane. The PVDF/C–Ti membrane was also applied for lignin separation, where the rejection to sodium lignin sulfonate was maintained at about 75%, and the flux recovery ratio after UV irradiation reached 90%. The demonstrated the advantages of PVDF/C–Ti membrane in photocatalytic degradation and antifouling performance.

Conductive hydrogels have attracted attention because of their wide application in wearable devices. However, it is still a challenge to achieve conductive hydrogels with high sensitivity and wide frequency band response for smart wearable strain sensors. Here, we report a composite hydrogel with piezoresistive and piezoelectric sensing for flexible strain sensors. The composite hydrogel consists of cross-linked chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CHACC) as the hydrogel matrix, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) as the conductive filler, and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) as the piezoelectric filler. A one-pot thermoforming and solution exchange method was used to synthesize the CHACC/PEDOT: PSS/PVDF-TrFE hydrogel. The hydrogel-based strain sensor exhibits very high sensitivity (GF: 19.3), fast response (response time: 63.2 ms), and wide frequency range (response frequency: 5–25 Hz), while maintaining excellent mechanical properties (elongation at break up to 293%). It can be concluded that enhanced strain-sensing properties of the hydrogel are contributed to both greater change in the relative resistance under stress and wider response to dynamic and static stimulus by adding PVDF-TrFE. This has a broad application in monitoring human motion, detecting subtle movements, and identifying object contours and a hydrogel-based array sensor. This work provides an insight into the design of composite hydrogels based on piezoelectric and piezoresistive sensing with applications for wearable sensors.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films are widely used in sensors for their wide response frequency, good flexibility, low acoustic impedance, and chemical stability. In this work, PVDF/CaCl2piezoelectric films were prepared by an electro-assisted 3D printing method and used to form a multi-layer composite film sensor. The study found that the addition of CaCl2can effectively increase theβ-phase content in the PVDF film and improve the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the PVDF composite film sensors. When the content of CaCl2is 0.15 wt.%, theβ-phase content of the PVDF/CaCl2composite film can reach the highest value of up to 48.47%, and the output voltage response of the sensor is 0.62 V at an input frequency of 10 Hz, 10 V voltage. The output voltage of PVDF composite film sensor with two and three layers is 1.306 and 1.693 times that of a single layer, respectively. The sensitivity of the multi-layer sensors has also been greatly improved.Keywords:3D printing;film;composite;sensor

Humidity sensors have been essential applications in the field of environment protection, agriculture, health care, and so on. It is still focused on preparing sensor materials that can serve as both substrate and humidity sensing layer with low cost, good mechanical flexibility, excellent sensitivity, and reliability. Inspired by the microstructure of the Namib Desert Beetle, in this article, we design a facile method to combine hydrophobic structure with hydrophilic structure and achieve a flexible, responsible, stable sensor (BNFM) based on Zinc oxide NPs-Polyvinylidene fluoride (ZnO-PVDF) with functions of humidity-sensing. Benefiting from the beetle-like microstructure and the specific surface area of the nanofibrous membrane, the BNFM humidity sensor is characterized by an excellent sensitivity of more than 0.7 pF/RH% as well as good response/recovery time (15/7s) within the humidity range from 19 to 92% relative humidity. Besides, the BNFM humidity sensor can be arched inside a mask for real-time detection of human breath conditions. The facile and efficient fabrication technique presents a great platform for the exploration of multifunctional humidity sensors.

MXene as a new member of 2D materials due to its metallic conductivity, rigid structure, hydrophilicity and functionalization has received extensive interests in the field of ion exchange membranes . Herein, different mass fractions of Ti 3 C 2 T X MXene were mixed into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) by blending method to obtain cation exchange membranes (CEMs), and the electrodialysis (ED) properties of these membranes were characterized to determine the possibility of their application. With the addition of MXene, the anti-fouling ability of the membrane was effectively improved and the membrane resistance was reduced, and the overall performance reached the best when the content of MXene was 3%wt. The ED process results showed that the modified CEMs can reduce the energy consumption and improve the mass transfer capacity, and 3%wt MXene/PVDF CEM had better performance than other prepared CEMs. Furthermore, the improvement of mechanical and thermal stability of these membranes were attributed to the formation of strong interaction between PVDF and MXene. The preparation strategy of MXene/PVDF CEMs provides basic information for the rational design of separation membrane with high comprehensive performance and opens up a good prospect for the application of MXene in the field of electrodialysis.

Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) have attracted much attention for high energy density solid-state lithium-metal batteries owing to their flexibility, low cost, and easy scale-up. However, the unstable Li/CPE interface is always challengeable for the practical utilization of CPEs. Herein, a polymer interlayer containing K + prepared by ultraviolet (UV)-curing precursor solution is coated on Li surface to stabilize the interface between poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) composite electrolytes and Li anode. Benefiting from the physical barrier of the interlayer, the continuous decomposition of PVDF is restrained and the intimate contact between electrode and electrolyte is also achieved to reduce the interface impedance. Moreover, the added K + is utilized to further regulate smooth Li deposition. As a consequence, the symmetric Li∣Li cell with coated Li demonstrates steady cycling at 0.4 mAh·cm −2 and a high critical current density of 1 mA·cm −2 . The assembled Li∣LiFePO 4 cell presents outstanding cycling stability (capacity retention of 90% after 400 cycles at 1 C) and good rate performance. The associated pouch cell performs impressive flexibility and safety. This work provides a convenient strategy to achieve stable Li/PVDF interface for high-performance PVDF-based solid state Li metal batteries.

Inorganic/organic composite solid electrolytes are receiving the ever-increasing attention due to high safety and flexibility, however, inferior organic/inorganic interface compatibility also leads to the serious agglomeration of ceramic particles and severe blockage of Li + transport. Grafting amphoteric sulfonate betaine (SB) onto the surfaces of inorganic/organic components could act as the “wielding flux” and the ion-conductive interface layer, thus resulting in a homogeneous dispersion of the inorganic components, high interface compatibility and ionic conductivity. Herein, a series of composite solid electrolytes were prepared by scraping method, in which SB-modified PVDF (SB-PVDF) acted as the ion-conductive polymer matrix and combined with SB-modified Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (SB-LLZO) with the different contents (0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) and 20% bis(trifluoromethane) sulphonyl lithium (LiTFSI). The resultant composites were marked as 0 % SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, 10 %SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, 20 %SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, 30 %SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI and 40 %SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI, respectively. Desirably, 30 %SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI exhibited high ionic conductivity of 1.95 × 10 -4 S/cm, high Li + transference number (t Li + ) of 0.71 and wide electrochemical stability window of 5.31 V. Furthermore, the corresponding Li//30 %SB-LLZO/SB-PVDF/LiTFSI//LiFePO 4 cell delivered the reversible discharge capacity of 136.9 mAh/g and capacity retention of 95.1% after 200 cycles at 1.0 C. Seemingly, such a double-surface-modification structural design of the composite solid electrolyte showed the promising potential for solid state lithium ion batteries.

Piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) provided an opportunity for non-invasive in situ electrical stimulation of cell behavior, yet its electroactive β phase was difficult to obtain due to its instability in the molten state. Herein, polyaniline (PANI) protrusions were in situ oxidation-polymerized on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets (PANI-MoS2). Then, PANI-MoS2 was introduced into laser additive-manufactured PVDF scaffolds. On the one hand, PANI protrusions produced steric hindrance between adjacent MoS2 nanosheets and inhibited the stacking and aggregating of MoS2. On the other hand, PANI-MoS2 could serve as a platform to achieve interfacial polarization locking. Specifically, Mo–S dipoles in MoS2 and π electron clouds over the N atom in PANI locked −CH2 dipoles in PVDF through electrostatic and hydrogen bond interactions, respectively, which forced −CH2 to align perpendicularly to the basal plane of MoS2 and bialy to one side of the PVDF main chain, thereby forming a full-reverse planar zigzag configuration of the polarized β phase and maintaining its stable existence. The results demonstrated that the β phase of the scaffolds was significantly increased from 43 to 90%, which resulted in an enhanced electrical output performance. The improved electrical output greatly promoted osteoblast-like cell proliferation and differentiation. Furthermore, owing to the pulling-out effect of MoS2 and improved interfacial stress transfer between MoS2 and the polymer matrix, the mechanical properties of scaffolds were also enhanced. These findings suggested that the piezoelectric scaffolds had great potential in bone tissue engineering.
