In this study, a new metal-organic framework adsorbent (UIO-66-NH 2 @TA) which can efficiently and selectively capture lead ions was developed by functionalizing UIO-66-NH 2 with tannic acid (TA) by Michael addition reaction. The structural and morphological properties of the produced adsorbent, as well as its adsorption mechanism for Pb (II) were discussed. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb (II) was 475.78 mg/g at pH 5.0, which was significantly higher than the adsorption capacity of many adsorbents reported in the literature. In addition, the adsorption isotherms and kinetics conformed to the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model , respectively. The results indicated that the adsorptive behavior of the adsorbent mainly depended on the active sites on the surface of the adsorbents. The UIO-66-NH 2 @TA showed favorable selectivity toward Pb (II) against the interference of coexisting metal ions . It was found that the excellent Pb (II) removal performance of UIO-66-NH 2 @TA was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of physical adsorption and chemisorption . Moreover, the UIO-66-NH 2 @TA showed extraction efficiencies of 88.01%, 82.44%, 80.20% and 74.99% for Pb (II) with initial concentration of 100 mg/L in river water, sea water, peach juice drink, and grape juice, respectively. This work proved that the UIO-66-NH 2 @TA had a wide application prospect in the field of Pb (II) treatment.

Herein, a three-dimensional porous nanomaterials AuNPs-decorated polyaniline nanowire arrays/carbon nanotube (Au-PANI-array@CNT) was constructed by modified dilute polymerization and redox reaction. The Au-PANI-array@CNT exhibited a larger specific surface area (50.03 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant mesopores (average pore size: 19.6 nm), due to the vertical growth of PANI nanowire arrays on CNT. The Au-PANI-array@CNT composite with a three-dimensional interconnected porous structure exhibited abundant electroactive sites and high adsorption capacity, significantly enhancing the deposition and electrochemical reaction process of heavy metals. The AuNPs embedded on PANI nanowries can provide high catalytic activity and multidimensional electron transport channels, further improving the detection sensitivity. A sensing platform with ultra-high sensitivity (2091, 3890 μA μM −1 cm −2 ) and lower limit of detection (0.18, 0.15 nM) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) determination was developed based on the three-dimensional porous PANI composite. Furthermore, the sensing mechanism of Au-PANI-array@CNT with Cd(II) was explored by XPS and FTIR spectroscopy . The current response only decreased by 5% after being stored at room temperature for 2 months, indicating that the sensor has high reproducibility and stability. Finally, the analysis of drinking water samples verified the excellent practicability of the sensor for the simultaneous measurement of trace levels (nM) of Cd(II) and Pb(II).

Halloysite/biochar was prepared by co-pyrolysis at different temperatures using coconut shell and halloysite as raw materials. Magnetic adsorbents were prepared through ball-mill extrusion with Fe 3 O 4 and the halloysite/biochar and the capacity of the adsorbents to adsorb Pb(II) from water was evaluated and compared. The effects of pH, contact time, and initial Pb(II) concentration on the adsorption capacity of the magnetic adsorbents for Pb(II) were investigated. The pseudo-second-order ( R 2 =0.9999) and Langmuir isothermal models ( R 2 =0.9906) fit the experimental data well. The prepared samples denotes as MBM-HBC700 exhibited the highest Pb(II) adsorption capacity (833.33 ± 16.71 mg·g -1 ), and the removal efficiency of Pb(II) by the magnetic adsorbents was above 90% after four adsorption–desorption cycles. Complexation, cation exchange, cation–π interaction, precipitation, pore filling and electrostatic adsorption have been proposed as the main removal mechanisms. After applying MBM-HBCs to simulated electroplating wastewater, the contents of Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cr(VI) were significantly lower than the discharge standard of China. The magnetic adsorbents prepared in this study have wide application prospects in the treatment of Pb(II) in wastewater, thus providing a new approach for promoting waste recycling and utilization.

The mechanism from the molecular level and the selectivity for the removal of metal ions from aqueous has become a hotspot in current water treatment . In this study, a sulphydryl-modified hollow polymer adsorbent was designed with intrinsic amine and grafted sulphydryl groups for efficient uptake of Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) by taking advantage of their properties of abundant functional groups, discrete hollow chambers, and high porosity. Interestingly, the benzenoid amine/quinoid imine functional groups have a stronger affinity for Cr(VI) than Cd(II) or As(III) and Pb(II). The formation of approximately 65.7% Cr(III) indicates the redox reaction from Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The electron-donating comes from benzenoid amine and oxidized to quinoid imine or protonated oxidized nitrogen units (-N = + ) with Cr(VI) reduced to Cr(III) for the increase of more than double of quinoid imine and a new functional group of -N = + . Ion exchange between –COO - groups and As(III)/Cd(II), the chelation of –SH groups for Pb(II)/As(III) are plausible mechanisms.

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g–1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g–1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g–1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g–1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

A novel magnetic Zr-MOF named Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -UiO-66-PEI was synthesized by modifying UiO-66-NH 2 with Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 and polyethyleneimine and its sorption characteristics for two representing heavy metals Pb(II) and Cr(VI) in water were examined. This material showed good thermal stability and was sufficiently magnetic to allow effective solid-liquid separation. The material had a maximum adsorption capacity of 273.2 mg/g for Pb(II) at pH 4.0 and 428.6 mg/g for Cr(VI) at pH 3.0, as obtained from the model fitting by the Hill equation. The sorption kinetics for both heavy metals on the material was fast, with adsorption equilibrium established in 60 min and 30 min for Pb(II) and Cr(VI), respectively. Model fitting of the kinetic data showed that Pb(II) and Cr(VI) sorption on Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -UiO-66-PEI followed the pseudo-second-order model. This material had good selectivity for competing ions, and still hold fairly good binding capacities after 5 times of regeneration. Adsorption mechanisms for Pb(II) and Cr(VI) by Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -UiO-66-PEI were proposed by analyzing FTIR, XPS and the electrokinetic property of the material. Specifically, Pb(II) adsorption on Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -UiO-66-PEI could be attributed to chelation of Pb(II) with the imine/amine functional groups in the material’s matrix, while Cr(VI) adsorption might stem from a combination of electrostatic attraction, chelation and redox reaction. It seems that Ni 0.6 Fe 2.4 O 4 -UiO-66-PEI could be used as a green and environmental-friendly material for heavy metals removal, particularly from acidic water streams.

Toxic heavy metal ions, valuable noble metal ions and organic dyes are significant concerns in wastewater treatment. In this work, MoO 3 nanobelts (MoO 3 NBs) prepared by solvothermal method and MoS 2 nanoarrays (MoS 2 NAs) constructed using MoO 3 NBs precursor were proposed to effectively remove heavy/noble metal ions and organic dyes, such as Pb (II) , Au (III) and Methylene Blue (MB). The two adsorbents exhibited the excellent adsorption capacity towards Pb (II) , Au (III) and MB. The maximum removal capacity of Pb (II) and MB on MoO 3 NBs was 684.93 mg/g and 1408 mg/g, respectively, whereas that of Au (III) and MB on MoS 2 NAs was 1280.2 mg/g and 768 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the thermodynamic parameters were calculated from the temperature-dependent curves, suggesting that the removal of Pb (II) and Au (III) on both adsorbents was spontaneous and endothermic. The new adsorbents introduced here were high adsorption activity, ease of fabrication, high scalability, good chemical stability, great repeatability and abundant and cheap supply, which were highly attractive for wastewater treatment.

Developing a reliable, sensitive and portable electrochemical sensor for precise determination of trace heavy metal ions in water is an attractive challenge. In this work, an integrated three-electrode sensor based on screen–printed gold working electrode (SPAuE) ex-situ electroplated bismuth film was developed via a facile and simple process for the determination of trace Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The bismuth film was deposited on SPAuE at a potential of −0.08 V (Bi/SPAuE −0.08V ). The results exhibited the sensor with a wide linear range (from 1 to 120 μg L -1 ) for the simultaneous detection of these three heavy metal ions. Besides, the detection limits of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) for the sensor were respectively found to be 0.04 μg L −1 , 0.02 μg L −1 , and 0.05 μg L −1 (S/N = 3). The proposed sensor revealed good anti-interference ability, satisfactory repeatability with RSDs of less than 2.5% (n = 12), excellent reproducibility with RSDs of less than 2.5% (n = 6), and considerable stability. The detection accuracy of the Bi/SPAuE −0.08V based sensor was further evaluated via atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Due to its simplicity in process, high detection performance and excellent reliability, such sensors are expected to find utility in portable heavy metal detection applications.

Camphor leaf (CL) was widely used to extract camphor oil and thus led to abundant forestry waste. In order to reduce pollution, the waste CL was used to prepare bio-adsorbent for Pb(II) removal after alkali treatment and functional modification. The effects of solution pH, initial Pb(II) concentration, contact time and solution temperature were investigated on adsorption process to evaluate the potential application in heavy metal ions’ removal. It was found that the massive hydroxyl groups released and plenty of micro-pores formed after the alkali treatment of CL bio-adsorbent, which obviously increased the Pb(II) adsorption. And the adsorption performance promoted continually after further functional modification by ionized 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA). The increase of pH was favourable for the adsorption even though the precipitation effect was deducted. Linear fitting method was more suitable to describe the adsorption process than nonlinear fitting method, including adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetics research. The adsorption thermodynamics was better to be described by nonlinear fitting method due to its lower root mean square error ( RMSE ) value and higher R 2 value. Among which, the adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics were fitted well to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The adsorption thermodynamics was exothermic in nature and the process was spontaneous at low solution temperature. The adsorption mechanism was revealed as the combination of dominant chemical adsorption and assistant physical adsorption.

Nanofiber membranes from the composite of cellulose acetate/polyvinylpyrrolidone were prepared using electrospinning technique. After treated with water and alcoholic KOH to remove partially polyvinylpyrrolidone and deacetylate the cellulose acetate, the membranes were further functionalized with thiol groups using thioglycolic acid. Related materials were characterized using infrared and thermogravimetric analysis. And the results showed that the membranes were success of functionalisation. Then the nanofiber membranes were used in the sorption-desorption process. The effects of pH, contacting time and adsorption capacity of nanofiber membranes were studied against Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. And the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb (II), Cu (II), and Cd (II) ions were estimated at 30.96, 19.63, 34.70 mg g −1 . Our results suggested that the adsorption behaviour of metal ions could be described using Langmuir model. Their adsorption kinetics was in agreement with the model of pseudo-second order, suggesting chemical adsorption as the rate-limiting step of the adsorption mechanism. The durability of the thiol-functionalized cellulose nanofiber membranes was also evaluated by repetitive adsorption-desorption.

The electrode reaction of Pr(III) and coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III) were studied on an inert W electrode in eutectic LiCl-KCl to extract Pr from molten salt. The electrode process kinetic of Pr(III) on W electrode was firstly explored employing cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Tafel technique, such as the diffusion coefficient of Pr(III) in eutectic LiCl-KCl and the exchange current density ( j 0 ) for Pr(III)/Pr(0) couple and the electrode reaction activation energy. Then, various electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III). Four cathode current peaks ascribed to the formation of Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds were detected, which indicated that the Pr could deposit on pre-deposited Pb film, react with Pb, and form Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, the electrolytic products formed by galvanostatic electrolysis were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction, which illustrated the formation of PrPb 3 intermetallic compound in LiCl-KCl-PbCl 2 -PrCl 3 melt.

This study evaluated the Pb(II) sorption capacity of jujube pit biochar (JPB) in aqueous solution, which was derived from jujube pit by pyrolysis and used as a promising and economical adsorbent. More importantly, the utilization of JPB could realize the recycling of agricultural residues. The JPB was characterized using conventional science technologies, including SEM, BET and FT-IR, and the sorption capacity of JPB for lead ions was investigated according to different adsorption parameters, such as the kinetics data, solution pH, isotherms data, coexisting ions of Na + and K + , desorption and reusability, and solution temperature. The results of kinetics data suggested that the lead ion adsorption process by JPB could be fast to reach equilibrium within 30 min. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of JPB for Pb(II) was calculated to be maximum for 137.1 mg/g at pH 6.0. More importantly, after five cycles of desorption and reuse, the JPB still reached 70% of its original adsorption capacity. All the results suggested that JPB had a broad application prospect for the purification of lead ions in practical.
