A novel magnetic heterogeneous ruthenium catalyst (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -DTPA-Ru) was prepared by using magnetic silicon spheres as support, ethylenediaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as functional ligands, ruthenium chloride as catalyst precursor. The results obtained after a series of characterizations showed that the catalyst Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -DTPA-Ru was 5–15 nm in size with a 0.205 nm lattice and contained 0.31 mmol Ru/g catalyst. It also had a good thermal stability under 232°C which was verified by thermal filtration method. Besides, the saturation magnetic intensity was as high as 20.54 emu/g. The catalyst Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -DTPA-Ru was applied for the first time into thirteen oxidation reactions of aromatic alcohols and showed good catalytic activity even the yields of eleven aromatic alcohols were all over 90%. In catalyzing 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone, its TOF and TON were 9677 h −1 and 6991, respectively. The Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -DTPA-Ru catalyst could still maintain good reusability and catalytic performance after 15 cycles of 1-phenylethanol oxidation, which was superior to many reported catalysts and had great potential in future industrial production.

The porous thermosensitive imprinted polymer of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP was prepared in a short time with the aid of a microwave. The structure and morphology of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP were characterized by ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDS, and BET. The thermosensitive block PDEA- b -P(DEA- co -AM) was introduced into the imprinted polymer preparation system. N-MAM and AA were selected as functional monomers, and stable HIPE Pickering emulsions were prepared under high-speed stirring, combined with multi-field coupling technology. The synthesis process of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP was studied, and the dosages of template ion, functional monomer, and cross-linking agent, as well as microwave power, polymerization temperature, and polymerization time, were optimized. Under optimal technological conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP reached 0.20 mmol L −1 at 33°C, and adsorption equilibrium was reached within 240 min. Theoretical studies showed that the adsorption of MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP conformed to the quasi-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model. When MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP was applied to a diluted platinum group catalyst leaching solution, its adsorption capacity for MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP to Ru was 0.23 mmol L −1 , and the purity of platinum group metals increased from 53.72% to 76.43% after one adsorption/desorption cycle. After 11 reuses, the adsorption capacity maintained 70.06% of the original capacity, indicating that MW-Ru(IV)-TIIP had good potential in industrial applications.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of end-of-life polyolefins can produce value-added liquid fuels and therefore holds great promises in plastic waste reuse and environmental remediation. The major challenge limiting the recycling economic benefit is the severe methanation (usually >20%) induced by terminal C–C cleavage and fragmentation in polyolefin chains. Here, we overcome this challenge by demonstrating that Ru single-atom catalyst can effectively suppress methanation by inhibiting terminal C–C cleavage and preventing chain fragmentation that typically occurs on multi-Ru sites. The Ru single-atom catalyst supported on CeO2 shows an ultralow CH4 yield of 2.2% and a liquid fuel yield of over 94.5% with a production rate of 314.93 gfuels gRu−1 h−1 at 250 °C for 6 h. Such remarkable catalytic activity and selectivity of Ru single-atom catalyst in polyolefin hydrogenolysis offer immense opportunities for plastic upcycling.

This work demonstrated that a series of ultrabright fluorescent silica nanoparticles have been synthesized and designed via the reverse microemulsion method to encapsulate (2,2′-bipyridine)2-(5-aminophenanthroline) Ru bis(hexafluorophosphate) (Rubpy-phen). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and fluorescence spectra were used to study the morphology and properties of the nanoparticles. By introducing ethanol into the reaction system, the obtained uniform fluorescent nanoparticles showed monodispersity and controllable size. With an increase of nanoparticle size (from 50–180 nm), the relative brightness of the nanoparticles was greatly improved from 534 to 86 972 by comparison with free dye molecules. Due to the protection of the silica matrix, the fluorescence of high concentration dye-doped silica nanoparticles (Rubpy-phen NPs) is not quenched, which results in higher fluorescence intensity and relative brightness. Moreover, the silica matrix can also protect Rubpy-phen from leakage. Due to the high brightness and biocompatibility, Rubpy-phen NPs have potential applications in the biological field.

Catalyst based on Ru loaded HZSM5 zeolite is prepared by a wet impregnation method, which is screen printed onto alumina substrates and serves as sensitive materials for the catalytic combustion sensor. The results show that Ru-HZSM5 catalyst has a high catalytic activity to combustible gases such as hydrogen (H 2 ) and carbon monoxide (CO) at low temperature. However, a poor dispersion of Ru reduces the catalytic activity of the catalyst when the Ru loading is too high. It is due to the pore structure of the sensitive material which facilitates the acquisition of high dispersion characteristics and gas selective regulation. The catalytic sensor based on Ru-HZSM5 also has high selectivity for combustible gases. Due to the low operating temperature, the sensor has a high selectivity for combustible gases and no cross-response to interfering gases such as ammonia (NH 3 ) and volatile organic compound (VOCs). Therefore, the catalytic type gas sensor with low power consumption and good selectivity can be used for monitoring CO, H 2 and other combustible gases.

Synthesis of γ -butyrolactone (GBL) from renewable biomass resources under mild reaction condition with catalysis is attractive but challenging. Herein, we report the photocatalytic oxidation of the biomass-based furfural derivative tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFAL) to prepare GBL under light irradiation (365 nm) in air at room temperature. Utilising Ru/TiO 2 as the photocatalyst and air as the oxidant, a GBL yield as high as 73 % was achieved. The reaction mechanism was studied rigorously by performing photocatalyst performance evaluation, material characterisation, free-radical quenching reactions and electron spin resonance (ESR). In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy was employed to detect intermediate products and elucidate the mechanism at the molecular level. Based on the in-situ monitoring results, we propose a pathway for the oxidation decarbonylation of THFAL to produce CO 2 and GBL.

The high cost and low stability of Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts have limited their commercial applications. In this paper, we report the microwave synthesis of ultralow loading Ru-Mo2C on carbon nanotubes (CNT) as ORR catalysts to alleviate these above disadvantages. Ru-Mo2C@CNT exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity with a half-potential of 0.87 V and an onset potential of 0.94 V. It has high stability and palmary anti-methanol capability in alkaline electrolytes. This Ru-Mo2C@CNT may be a promising alternative to Pt-based electrocatalysts in energy conversion and storage.

The fuel cell is a basic device to generate electricity from chemical fuels. It is often operated with oxygen as the oxidizing agent, but its sluggish reduction has become a key challenge. Herein, a conceptual oxygen-free design is demonstrated, namely a zinc-nitrate fuel cell, which converts nitrate waste into valuable ammonia and generates electricity simultaneously. The cell is constructed with zinc foil as the anode and ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles loaded on nickel foam as the cathode. Catalyzed by Ru/Ni hydroxide hybrid, the reaction rate of 384 mmol h –1 mg Ru –1 (1.4 × 10 –6 ± 0.1 × 10 –6 mol s –1 cm –2 ) and Faradic efficiency (FE NH3 = 97% ± 2%) at −0.6 V versus reverse hydrogen electrode are achieved for nitrate-to-ammonia conversion. During ammonia production, such zinc-nitrate fuel cell can further deliver a maximum power density of 51.5 mW cm –2 (0.25 cm 2 electrode) and 23.3 mW cm –2 (1 cm 2 electrode), keeping ultrahigh Faradic efficiency (97% ± 4% at 40 mA cm –2 ) after long tests.

Graphical Utilizing ruthenium-loaded amino-modified dendritic mesoporous silica microspheres (DMSMs) as catalysts for ammonia decomposition demonstrated outstanding activity at low temperatures. This is attributed to the distinctive mesoporous structure of DMSMs and the regulation of electronic structure through amino modification. In addition, the catalyst exhibited consistent catalytic activity throughout a 60 hour stability test. We reported metallic ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles loaded on amino modified dendritic mesoporous silica microspheres (Ru/NH 2 -DMSMs) for ammonia decomposition to hydrogen. The sizes of the loaded Ru nanoparticles on carrier are 2–3 nm, providing rich active sites for ammonia decomposition reaction. As a result, the obtained Ru/NH 2 -DMSMs-5.1 can afford almost ~100 % ammonia decomposition at 550 °C, due to the unique mesoporous structure of DMSMs inhibiting the aggregation of active Ru nanoparticles and enhancing the mass transport of ammonia.

Spherical Ru-NiCo 2 O 4 synthesized by hydrothermal-calcination formed Ru-O-Co/Ni bonds to enhance metal-support interaction. • The nanowire-assembled ball-like structure exposed abundant active sites and accelerated mass transfer. • Metal-support interaction effect optimized electronic structure, downshifted d-band center, and regulated intermediate adsorption. • Ru-NiCo 2 O 4 exhibited outstanding OER activity with an overpotential of 217 mV at 10mA/cm² and durable stability over 70 h. Hydrogen production by water electrolysis is a promising approach for renewable energy conversion, yet its efficiency is severely restricted by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Ru-based catalysts exhibit outstanding OER activity but suffer from poor stability and high cost. Constructing metal-support interaction (MSI) is an effective strategy to optimize the electronic structure and stability of Ru catalysts. Herein, fluffy spherical Ru anchored on NiCo 2 O 4 was fabricated via hydrothermal and calcination processes, in which Ru O Co/Ni bridge bonds were formed to strengthen the MSI effect between Ru nanoparticle and NiCo 2 O 4 support. The unique nanowire-assembled ball-like structure exposed abundant active sites and accelerated mass transfer. The MSI effect regulated the electronic structure, derived directional interfacial electron transfer, downshifted the d-band center, and optimized intermediate adsorption for OER. The synthesized Ru-NiCo 2 O 4 catalyst exhibited an overpotential of 217 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 and a long-term stability of 70 h.

Overcoming the mismatched adsorption energies is critical for efficient alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis, yet modulating the strong Ru–O covalency without compromising structural integrity remains a key challenge. Herein, we address this by introducing ionic Ru–F bonds into selected regions of RuO 2 via tailored chemical bond engineering for enhanced hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER/HOR). Using fluorine‑doped amorphous RuO 2 (F‑RuO 2 ) nanosheets as a model catalyst, we find that electrons around fluorine atoms can become highly localized, forming ionic-character Ru–F bonds. This design results in a low HER overpotential of 32 mV at 100 mA cm −2 and delivers a high HOR diffusion-limiting current density of 2.98 mA cm −2 , positioning F-RuO 2 among the best‑performing Ru‑based electrocatalysts yet reported. Moreover, the anion-exchange-membrane water electrolyzer with F-RuO 2 can maintain a cell voltage of 1.60 V at 100 mA cm −2 for over 300 h with negligible degradation. In-situ spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal that the formed Ru–F bonds weaken Ru–O covalency and moderately lower the Ru oxidation states, optimizing hydrogen‑intermediate adsorption toward the ideal range and enhancing both HER and HOR electrocatalysis. This work offers fundamental insights into covalent‑bond modulation in amorphous oxides and establishes a generalizable design paradigm for high-performance electrocatalysts in sustainable energy conversion. The ionic Ru–F bonds reduce the covalency of RuO 2 and optimize the adsorption behaviour of the Ru sites, enabling F‑RuO 2 to exhibit superior reaction kinetics and catalytic activity in both HER and HOR. Rare-earth oxide-supported Ru metal catalysts are promising for NH3 synthesis owing to a strong metal–support interaction. Modifying rare-earth oxides with a second metal offers an effective approach to tuning support properties, while systematic support engineering to enhance NH3 synthesis performance remains scarce. In this work, a series of Ru/Ce1–aLaaOx catalysts with varying Ce-to-La molar ratios were synthesized and evaluated for NH3 synthesis. The NH3 synthesis rate of Ru/Ce1–aLaaOx exhibits a volcano relationship with an increase in the La content. The optimal Ru/Ce0.7La0.3Ox catalyst exhibits a remarkable NH3 synthesis rate of 34.13 mmolNH3 gcat–1 h–1 with over 500 h long-term stability at 400 °C and 1 MPa, which is 1.65-fold that of Ru/CeO2. Various characterizations reveal that La doping is beneficial to increase the charge density of Ru sites via facilitation of oxygen vacancy formation, which consequently ensures fast N2 cleavage. In addition, the La doping can avoid hydrogen poisoning more effectively through enhanced hydrogen spillover, which together with promoted N2 activation are responsible for high-performance NH3 synthesis over Ru/Ce0.7La0.3Ox catalyst under mild conditions.
