Facile synthesis of HPW@MOF-199 embedded in SBA-15 functionalized with -COOH groups as a steady catalyst for the esterification reaction

Yibo Zhang,Wei Wang,Chunlai Liu,Peihang Shen,Zelong Liu,Jianglei Hu,Fengwei Shi

In this work, we successfully synthesized a novel composite (HPW@MOF-199/SBA-15C, PMS-15C) in which MOF-199 encapsulated HPW catalyst (named HPW@MOF-199) was confined in SBA-15C, which is the carboxy-functionalized SBA-15. Physicochemical properties of the composites PMS-15C were systemically characterized by N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, wide-angle and low-angle XRD, XPS, FT-IR, SEM, and TEM. The results exhibited that HPW@MOF-199 had been successfully synthesized and embedded into the SBA-15C pores by COOH on the surface of SBA-15C. Meanwhile, the composites PMS-15C exhibited high activity and excellent reuse properties in the esterification reaction of acetic acid and ethanol, and no evidence of aggregation, leaching, or inactivation of HPW@MOF-199 during repeated use. The good dispersion of HPW within the MOF-199 cage and the interaction between HPW@MOF-199 and SBA-15C may be responsible for the good catalytic activity as well as the high stability of PMS-15C.

Insight into the effects of reaction conditions on metal-free surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate from SBA-15

Xu Xiang,Zou Yu,He Junjie,Zeng Yanning,Yu Caili,Zhang Faai

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles/polymer hybrid materials were prepared via metal-free surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Self-synthesized mesoporous SBA-15 with surface hydroxyl groups was modified with (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane, followed by anchoring of the ATRP initiator α-bromoisobutyryl bromide onto the surface via amide reaction. The SI-ATRP of methyl methacrylate was then carried out with fluorescein (FL) as a photocatalyst and trimethylamine (TEA) as an electron donor under irradiation with blue light. Thus, polymer chains grew directly from mesoporous walls. The hybrid materials were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, N 2 adsorption/desorption measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of the ligand/photocatalyst molar ratios, solvent, and the monomer/initiator molar ratios on grafting density, molecular weight, and molecular-weight distribution were investigated. The results show that a higher TEA/FL ratio led to a higher reaction rate and better controllability of the polymerization but also to a lower grafting density. These properties were also affected by the solvent. With an increasing monomer/initiator molar ratio, the grafting rate, molecular weight, and grafting density exhibited increasing trends.

Highly Selective Conversion of Furfural to Furfural Alcohol or Levulinate Ester in One Pot over ZrO2@SBA-15 and Its Kinetic Behavior

Junhua Zhang,Yao Liu,Shibo Yang,Junnan Wei,Liang He,Lincai Peng,Xing Tang,Yonghao Ni

Biorefinery for the purpose of producing biofuels, chemicals, and materials has received much attention. Furfural alcohol (FOL) and levulinate ester (LE) are important biomass-derived platform chemicals, and they are produced from sugar-based furfural (FAL). Unfortunately, the two products are often obtained separately in different reaction systems, which is undesirable; furthermore, it is of significant practical interest to control their selectivity so that the desired product can be accumulated in high yields. Herein, we present an efficient method for the highly selective conversion of FAL to FOL or isopropyl levulinate (IPL) in a one pot system using isopropanol as the hydrogen source and ZrO2@SBA-15 as a bifunctional catalyst with both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites. Under optimized reaction conditions, high yields of FOL and IPL in up to 90.4% and 87.2%, respectively, were obtained. Based on the experimental results, a kinetic model describing the catalytic conversion of FAL into FOL and IPL process has been established, which has a good correlation (R2 > 0.92) between the measured and predicted data. The developed kinetics can provide an effective tool to monitor the process and tailor the process conditions to obtain the desired product.

Facile synthesis of few-layer and ordered K-promoted MoS2 nanosheets supported on SBA-15 and their potential application for heterogeneous catalysis

Jichang Lu,Jian Fang,Zhizhi Xu,Dedong He,Siyou Feng,Yubei Li,Gengping Wan,Sufang He,Hua Wu,Yongming Luo

Supported MoS 2 based materials are widely used as heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, we propose a rapid and facile method (ultrasound-induced impregnation assisted by microwave thermal treatment) to synthesize mesoporous silica (SBA-15)-supported, few-layer, ordered and K-promoted MoS 2 nanosheets with different K/Mo ratios. The prepared catalysts are characterized by various physical and chemical techniques. Their catalytic performance is evaluated by methyl mercaptan (CH 3 SH) synthesis from CO/H 2 /H 2 S. The results show that our catalysts exhibit a much higher CO conversion and selectivity to CH 3 SH than the catalysts prepared using the conventional impregnation and reported in the literature. The good performance arises because of two main factors: MoS 2 nanosheets of only 2–4 layers and K promotion. Experimental characterizations and (density functional theory) calculations show that the former is the typical nano-size effect, and the latter stabilizes C S bonds when activating COS molecules.

Simultaneous production of hydrogen and carbon nanotubes from cracking of a waste cooking oil model compound over Ni-Co/SBA-15 catalysts

Wei Liu,Hong Yuan

Summary Hydrogen is considered an ideal energy carrier. However, the use of fossil fuels to produce hydrogen depletes natural resources and causes environmental problems. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find alternative raw materials and technologies for the production of hydrogen. Waste cooking oil (WCO) is a renewable energy source that has emerged as a potential raw material for hydrogen production. This study describes the production of hydrogen and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by catalytic cracking of a WCO model compound (WCOMC) performed in a lab-scale fixed bed using Ni-Co/SBA-15 catalysts. The phase, structure and reduction properties of the catalyst were analysed by using different characterisation methods. The effects of the nickel-cobalt metal content and the reaction temperature on both the hydrogen production and the quality of the CNTs were investigated. The deposited carbonaceous products were characterised to analyse their external appearance, internal structure, oxidation stability and graphitisation degree. The results indicated that the catalyst containing 20% Ni and 30% Co showed the highest activity. When reaction temperature was 800°C, the instantaneous volume fraction of hydrogen was close to 43.5 vol% and the content of hydrogen in the gas product was close to 66.5 vol%. A few multi-walled CNTs having a small diameter and some CNTs with an open-topped structure were deposited on 10%Ni-40%Co/SBA-15 and 30%Ni-20%Co/SBA-15, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopic analysis indicated that all CNTs showed high oxidation stability and a high degree of graphitisation.

Effect of metal-support interaction on the structural and enhanced photocatalytic performance of mesoporous M–TiO2/SBA-16 (M = Ag and Fe)

Ma Jing,Xu Shangyuan,Chu Jia,Xue Juanqin,Tang Jieli,Qiang Liangsheng

In this paper, a series of metal supported TiO 2 /SBA-16 photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by wet impregnation method. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, N 2 adsorption–desorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV–visible absorption spectra (UV-vis) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that SBA-16 retained the ordered mesostructure after modification. The results shown that loading different metal elements was found to have significant influences on the crystallographic structure and physical properties. Moreover, the prepared materials were evaluated on photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). Experiment results showed that the degradation of RhB by these catalysts follows the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The effect of metal element on photocatalytic activity can be attributed that the appropriate amounts of metal concentration can enhance the photocurrent due to the reduced electron–hole recombination, which can improve the efficiency of photocatalytic reactions.

Lanthanide mesoporous SBA-15 hybrids through functionalized 6-hydroxybenz[de]anthracen-7-one linkage: UV–visible light sensitisation and visible-NIR luminescence

Yan-Jing Gu,Bing Yan

A series of new visible and near-infrared (NIR) luminescent lanthanide-hydroxybenz[de]anthracen derivatives (Ln(HBAN) 3 (H 2 O) 2 (NO 3 ) 3 , Ln(HBAN) 3 phen(NO 3 ) 3 ) were synthesized (HBAN-6-hydroxybenz[de]anthracen-7-one, Ln   =   Eu, Yb, Nd). Further, chemically bonded lanthanide hybrids of functionalized mesoporous silica (SBA-15) are prepared using HBAN-functionalized alkoxysilane (HBAN-Si) as linker, which is named as Ln(HBAN-SBA-15) 3 (NO 3 ) 3 , Ln(HBAN-SBA-15) 3 phen(NO 3 ) 3 (Ln   =   Eu, Yb, Nd), respectively. The physical characterization and especially the photoluminescence properties for these hybrids are performed. SAXRD and BET of them revealed that all of these hybrid materials have uniformity in the mesostructure. Worth noting here is that the excitation spectra of these hybrid materials are extended to visible light region (439–535   nm). Upon ligand-mediated excitation with the ultraviolet and visible light, the visible luminescence for europium hybrids and NIR luminescence for Yb 3+ and Nd 3+ hybrids are obtained.

Tuning the pore structure of plug-containing Al-SBA-15 by post-treatment and its selectivity for C16 olefin in ethylene oligomerization

Sen Lin,Lei Shi,Hongpeng Zhang,Na Zhang,Xianfeng Yi,Anmin Zheng,Xuebing Li

Al-SBA-15 containing plug structures inside straight channels have been hydrothermally synthesized through a one-step synthesis strategy in an environmentally friendly acid-free medium. The effects of steaming, alkali, and acid post-treatments on the structural properties were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption at 77   K, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR spectrum, 27 Al MAS NMR, and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analyses. The presence of the plugs can significantly enhance structural stability against steaming or alkali post-treatments. Acid post-treatment can be a very simple and convenient technique for adjusting the textural properties of plug-containing Al-SBA-15, and especially for optimizing the accessibility to active sites. Acid post-treatment at the low temperatures of 313 and 323   K results in the formation of a larger specific surface area (905   m 2 /g) and pore volume (0.94   cm 3 /g) through an “open door” effect in the plugs, without eliminating any of the plugs from the channels. In particular, nearly half of the secondary micropores on the pore walls were preserved. In contrast, raising the acid post-treatment temperature further to 333 and 343   K caused a “closed doors” effect through the blockage of pores in the plugs by the extracted fragments. After loading with nickel, the catalyst exhibited a higher yield of C 10+ olefins in ethylene oligomerization , and more importantly, after steaming and acid post-treatments at higher temperatures, the samples showed shape selectivity for the C 16 olefin.

Functionalized corn stalk carboxymethyl cellulose and mesoporous silica SBA-15 composite hydrogel-immobilized lipase for the resolution of racemic ibuprofen ethyl ester

Hong Zhang,Wenbin Liu,Lei Wang,Xin Zhang,Bo Wang,Xu Zeng,Bin Zhang

The immobilization of enzymes is an important strategy to improve their stability and reusability. However, it often comes with a trade off of reduced biological activity and catalytic efficiency. In this study, a composite hydrogel based on corn stalk carboxymethyl cellulose, acrylic acid, and mesoporous silica SBA-15 was developed as a support for the immobilization of lipase from Pseudomonas S.P. (PSL). The surface morphology and functional properties of the composite hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and simultaneous thermal analyzer, respectively. The composite hydrogel materials had a large number of mesopores and macropores were present in the wall of the hydrogel sheet. The hydrogel had a network structure that reduced the diffusion resistance of the substrate and improved the accessibility of the enzyme. The immobilized PSL exhibited high enantioselectivity (E value: 88.2) and enzyme activity (316.8 µmol/g/min) in the preparation of (S)-ibuprofen by enzymatic hydrolytic resolution of racemic ibuprofen ethyl ester. This prepared novel composite hydrogel is a promising supporting matrix for the immobilization of enzymes.

Effect of Cu loading on the structure and catalytic properties of Cu/SBA-15 for the hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol

Jicheng Wang,Yanhong Quan,Linjie Li,Shunan Yin,Xinxin Ding,Jun Ren

A series of Cu/SBA-15 catalysts with different Cu loadings are prepared by the ammonia evaporation method for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FA). The results show that the supported Cu loading influences the structure and catalytic activity during FF hydrogenation. The 20Cu/SBA-15 catalyst shows the optimum performance with 99.3 % FF conversion, 99.0 % selectivity to FA, nearly pure FA product, and a turnover frequency reaching up to 81.7h −1 . The effect of Cu loading can be related to Cu dispersion and the interaction between the metal and support, which further promotes the surface Cu + /Cu 0 ratio. Additionally, the correlation of FF conversion with Cu + /Cu 0 ratio confirms that the excellent performance of 20Cu/SBA-15 is mainly derived from the synergy of Cu + and Cu 0 species, although the range of performance is not large. Finally, the optimal reaction conditions are screened using a reaction temperature of 150 °C, a reaction pressure of 4 MPa, a catalyst dosage of 0.1 g, and a reaction time of 60 min. The present study confirms that the Cu loading has a significant effect on the structure of Cu/SBA-15 and nearly pure objective FF product can be feasibly obtained with an appropriate Cu support in the synthesis of FA from FF hydrogenation.

Promoted oxygen vacancy formation by highly dispersed Pd single atoms anchored on SBA-15 decorated La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 for efficient water gas shift reaction

Yang Xiao,Chao Qu,Jingjing Zhang,Xi Chen,Wenjin Wang,Xuelong Zheng,Qing Ye

The dissociation of water is essential to water gas shift (WGS) reaction, and the presence of oxygen vacancies can facilitate this key step. Herein, a series of perovskite supported Pd single atoms catalysts were prepared via deposition precipitation method. The incorporation of Pd single atoms can effectively promote the formation of oxygen vacancy on the surface of the catalyst, improving the low temperature reducibility, the ratio of Mn 4 + /Mn 3+ and O ads /O lat compared with support. Among all samples, 0.82 Pd/La 0.5 Ca 0.5 MnO 3 /SBA-15 with the most oxygen vacancies presented 83.6 % CO conversion at 400 °C, specific reaction rate (0.54 mol CO g Pd −1 h −1 ), and TOF (3.77✕10 −2 s −1 ). DFT calculation proved that Pd doping can effectively decreased energy barrier of H 2 O dissociation, and promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies. This work provides experimental and theoretical insights into the rational design of highly active perovskite supported Pd single atom catalysts for WGS reaction.

Preparation of MIL-68(Al) embedded in SBA-15 functionalized with carboxyl groups as a catalyst for 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol

Peihang Shen,Zelong Liu,Yibo Zhang,Zelin Meng,Mingyang Song,Heming Zhao,Jianglei Hu,Fengwei Shi

Vinyl-functionalized SBA-15 was synthesised using a one-pot co-condensation method followed by carboxylation via nitric acid, with the intermediate product named SBA-15C. MIL-68 was then synthesised in-situ by adsorption of Al 3 + ions via carboxylate groups on SBA-15C to give the composite xMIL-68(Al)@SBA-15C. A series of characterizations were conducted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunner-Emmet-Teller measurements, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscope, and Transmission Electron Microscope. xMIL-68(Al)@SBA-15C maintained robust catalytic performance in the NaBH 4 -mediated reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol, with no significant decrease in activity after five cycles of reuse.
