Flexible organic phase-change films hold great promise for wearable thermal energy management and storage. However, their widespread application is hindered by the inherent liquid leakage of phase-change components and the common trade-off among mechanical flexibility, high latent heat, and shape stability. This study pioneers a novel reverse nano-encapsulation strategy. In this approach, La 3+ ions are directly introduced into a blend of PEG and XSBR latex, triggering the demulsification of the latex into discrete rubber particles. Subsequently, coordination cross-linking between oxalic acid and these La 3+ ions assembles the discrete particles into a continuous rubber phase. This process ultimately achieves the reverse nano-encapsulation of PEG, yielding a flexible phase change composite film characterized by a nanoscale sea-island structure. The prepared flexible film exhibits a remarkable latent heat of 92.65 J/g with high nanoencapsulation efficiency, which maintains 95.5% of its latent heat after 500 thermal cycles, demonstrating exceptional thermal reliability. Crucially, the material retains excellent mechanical flexibility, shape adaptability, and foldability, inherited from the elastomeric matrix. Benefiting from these integrated properties, it's applied in wearable thermal management, where it can be heated to 60 °C using a low voltage (1.5 V). Furthermore, a proof-of-concept device is developed, demonstrating stable and efficient solar-thermal-electric energy conversion. This work provides a groundbreaking pathway for designing high-performance, flexible phase-change materials for advanced energy applications.

Senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-Gla) is a key enzymatic biomarker of cellular senescence and aging, making its inhibition a promising strategy for developing anti-aging functional foods. Sea buckthorn ( Hippophae rhamnoides L . ) berries are rich in flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-aging potential; however, conventional extraction methods prioritize yield over the retention of bioactivity. In this study, we developed a bioactivity-oriented (BO) extraction strategy guided by β-Gla inhibitory activity, using ultrasound-assisted enzymatic extraction optimized by response surface methodology. Under the optimal BO conditions, the β-Gla inhibition rate reached 74.71 ± 1.88%. After purification, the BO extract contained significantly higher levels of the major flavonoids rutin, taxifolin, and isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside (collectively accounting for 54.0%) compared to the yield-oriented (YO) extract (27.5%). Consequently, the purified BO extract exhibited stronger antioxidant activity and β-Gla inhibition (IC₅₀ = 30.33 μg/mL) than the YO extract (IC₅₀ = 47.62 μg/mL). Correlation analysis indicated that the enhanced bioactivity resulted from synergistic interactions among multiple flavonoids. These findings demonstrate that the BO strategy selectively enriches high-activity flavonoid components and provides an effective processing approach to produce sea buckthorn-derived ingredients with targeted anti-aging properties for functional food applications.

Bivalves (Mollusca: Bivalvia) are an important source of animal protein for coastal communities. Given bivalves are typically stored at room conditions for a period to eliminate sand and undergo depuration before reaching consumers. Evaluation of the nutritional composition and contaminant levels in bivalves available in the markets can serve as an indicator of the quality of bivalves reaching consumers. In this context, this study assessed the protein and lipid nutritional quality, as well as non-essential trace metal content, of three commercially available bivalves ( Anadara granosa (cockles), Meretrix meretrix (clam), and Crassostrea hongkongesnsis (oyster)) from the Maowei Sea, China. The findings of this study can provide consumers with clearer information on the nutritional quality and contaminant levels of market-sold bivalves from this region.

Sea buckthorn polyphenols demonstrate significant lipid-lowering potential. Although probiotic fermentation has been shown to enhance the bioactivity of food matrices, its effect on the lipid-lowering function of sea buckthorn juice—particularly regarding the cholesterol esterase inhibition mechanism—remains unclear. Optimized fermentation increased total phenolic and total flavonoid contents to 0.531 mg/g and 0.926 mg/g, respectively, while enhancing antioxidant activity (hydroxyl radical scavenging activity reached 90.13%, metal ion-chelating activity of 69.82%), and increased the inhibition rates against lipase (from 87.13% to 98.13%) and cholesterol esterase (from 94.13% to 98.13%). Among polyphenolic components, conjugated phenols exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity (84.1%). Enzyme inhibition and kinetic studies demonstrated that conjugated phenols effectively inhibit cholesterol esterase. Fermented conjugated phenols exhibited competitive inhibition, whereas unfermented conjugated phenols demonstrated mixed inhibition. Fluorescence quenching experiments confirmed that fermentation-derived conjugated phenols form more stable complexes with cholesterol esterase through dynamic quenching, indicating higher binding affinity. In summary, sequential fermentation serves as an effective bioprocessing strategy. By generating competitive inhibitors of cholesterol esterase, it enhances the lipid-lowering activity of sea buckthorn juice, providing a theoretical basis for developing fermented functional beverages to manage hyperlipidemia. 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) is a harmful aromatic compound to environment. The catalytic hydrogenation of 4-NP was considered as a profitable approach due to the valuable organic intermediate product. High efficiency catalysts are crucial. Herein, Cu–Au bimetallic nanospheres (BNSs) with sea urchin structure were fabricated by tuning the reaction condition and ratio of precursors. The Cu–Au BNSs exhibited effective catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-NP and K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ]. The optimum catalyst can be determined as the Cu–Au BNSs prepared by 15 mL AA, 4-NP can be reduced to 4-AP in 150 s (k = 3.02 × 10 −2 s −1 ) with TOF value of 0.149 (s −1 ). The reusability of Cu–Au BNSs was evaluated with high effectiveness, the catalytic activity remained negligible loss over 18 cycles with efficiency over 95%, indicated their good reusability, which can be attributed to the synergistic effect of Cu–Au BNSs. The fabrication of bimetallic nanostructures provided an efficient approach to design efficient catalyst.

The protective effect of sea bass protein (SBP)-(−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) covalent complex-stabilized high internal phase (algal oil) Pickering emulsions (HIPPEs) on astaxanthin and algal oils was demonstrated in this study. The SBP-EGCG complex with better wettability and antioxidant activity was formed by the free radical-induced reaction to stabilize HIPPEs. Our results show that the SBP-EGCG complex formed dense particle shells surrounding the oil droplets, and the shells were crosslinked with the complex in the continuous phase to produce a network structure. The rheological analysis demonstrated that the SBP-EGCG complex endowed HIPPEs with high viscoelasticity, high thixotropic recovery, and good thermal stability, which were beneficial for three-dimensional (3D) printing applications. HIPPEs stabilized by SBP-EGCG complex were applied to improve the stability and bioaccessibility of astaxanthin and to delay algal oil lipid oxidation. The HIPPEs might become a food-grade 3D printing material served as a delivery system for functional foods.

Freshness is a key indicator for assessing the nutritional and safety qualities of fish products. This study aims to apply the convolutional neural network (CNN) for modeling the Raman spectra data, for the rapid classification of the freshness grades of sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ) fillets. Results suggested that the classification accuracy of CNN model was superior to principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and support vector machine (SVM) based on Raman spectra data. In addition, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was demonstrated effective for extracting the Raman spectral features for CNN modeling. Based on the feature-selected CNN model using ANOVA, the average accuracy for identifying sea bass fillets freshness was improved to 90.6% and the testing time was reduced to 0.44 s. In particular, the classification accuracy for the second-grade freshness was significantly improved to 80.2% compared with the CNN model with full-band Raman spectra. This research provided an exemplar for combining the portable Raman spectrometer with deep learning for the rapid and non-destructive analysis of food quality.

Detecting of sulfur ions (S 2- ) in environment is critical to human health. In this work, a fast and convenient colorimetric sensing platform for S 2- was developed. In detail, Pt deposited on sea urchin-like CuCo 2 O 4 nanostructures (Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 ) was synthesized and demonstrated to possess enhanced peroxidase-like performance, similar to the natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 can catalyze colorless 3, 3, 5, 5-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to be oxidized by H 2 O 2 into a blue product (oxTMB). When the above system encounters sulfur ions (S 2- ), the peroxidase-like activity of Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 is inhibited, accompanied with the color change of reaction solutions. On this basis, a colorimetric sensing platform for S 2- can be established. Kinetic experiments verified Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 possessed a higher affinity with substrate than that of HPR. The excellent peroxidase-like performance of Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 was attributed to two active species including hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (•O 2 - ) in the catalytic process. The linear range of the proposed sensing platform for S 2- was 0.5–10 μM as well as the low limit of detection is 85.9 nM, much lower than the World Health Organization regulations. The sensing platform had been successfully applied to the detection of S 2- in tap water and lake water, which provided a convenient method for detecting S 2- in wastewater.

Sea buckthorn ( Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) pulp oil (SPO) is enriched in natural bioactive components with high pharmacological activities. However, the presence of polysaccharides affects oil quality. Herein, the effects of different polysaccharide-adsorption treatments on the bioactive components and the in vitro antioxidant activities of SPO were investigated. The results demonstrated that the microwave-assisted activated clay (MAE-ACL) adsorption was more effective than the ultrasound-assisted activated clay adsorption for removing polysaccharides. Although the bioactive component levels and antioxidant activities of the SPO were reduced during the adsorption, the squalene content showed no significant difference. By performing principal component and correlation analyses that further evaluated the connection between the bioactive components and the free radical scavenging activities of SPO, MAE-ACL was determined to be the more suitable polysaccharide-adsorption treatment.

This study reports the first comprehensive exploration of the spatial patterns of dissolved and particulate polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs), their physical and biological controlling factors, and their potential biogeochemical influences in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of the northern South China Sea (NSCS). High levels of total particulate PUAs (0–41 nM) and dissolved PUAs (0.10–0.37 nM) were observed with substantial spatial variation during an intense summer phytoplankton bloom outside the PRE mouth. We found the particulate PUAs strongly correlated with temperature within the high chlorophyll bloom, while showing a generally positive correlation with chlorophyll- a for the entire region. Additionally, the Si/N ratio significantly correlated with the particulate PUAs along the estuary suggesting the important role of silica on PUA production in this region. The dissolved PUAs counterparts exhibited a positive correlation with chlorophyll- a within the high chlorophyll bloom, but a negatively one with temperature outside, reflecting the essential bio-physical coupling effects on the dissolved PUAs distributions in the ocean. Biogeochemical implications of PUAs on the coastal ecosystem include not only the deleterious restriction of high PUAs-producing diatom bloom on copepod population, but also the profound influence of particulate PUAs on the microbial cycling of organic carbon in the NSCS.

Porous structure design and magnetic-dielectric composite are effective ways to develop electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials with light-weight, thin-thickness, large effective absorption bandwidth (EAB), and strong reflection loss (RL). This article presents a simple one-step nitridation method for synthesizing Fe 4 N@C compounds with sea-island like and core-shell structures. The optimal RL value of Fe 4 N@C is up to −60.01 dB, and the EAB (frequency range for RL< −10 dB) is 5 GHz (11.1–16.1 GHz) with a thickness of 1.9 mm. The EAB reaches 5.5 GHz (12.5–18 GHz) when the matching thickness is 1.7 mm. The multi-component design achieved excellent impedance matching properties. The carbon frame connects the core-shell particles to form a three-dimensional porous structure, providing multiple reflection losses. Therefore, this work provides a convenient way to design efficient and lightweight EMW absorbers with special structures.

Sea bass ( Lateolabrax japonicus ) is favored by consumers, but the oxidation of visceral lipids during refrigeration has not been studied. This research investigates the effect of visceral lipid oxidation on storage quality. The results show that visceral lipids oxidize first, leading to a 1.72, 2.36, and 2.04-fold increase in malondialdehyde, 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, and 4-hydroxy-2-hexenal levels, respectively. The total free radicals, alkoxy radicals, and hydrogen radicals increased by 18.13 %, 18.17 %, and 9.87 %, respectively. Visceral lipid oxidation damages myofibrillar proteins, reducing sulfhydryl content by 18.11 %. The viscera also promote protein oxidation, particularly of actin. Volatile component and electronic nose analyses revealed significant odor deterioration due to lipid oxidation and protein degradation. Molecular docking confirms that 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal binds to 15 amino acids in β-actin. Therefore, spoilage occurs from the inside out, and viscera should be removed before freezing.
