Selective SERS Sensing of R6G Molecules Using MoS2 Nanoflowers under Pressure

Hongyan Yu,Yongxue Chen,Zhenyu Wen,Rensheng Wang,Sisi Jia,Wenjie Zhu,Yanping Song,Huanhuan Sun,Bingbing Liu

Pressure-induced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PI-SERS) has garnered significant attention as a subfield of SERS detection due to its capacity to regulate the band gap between molecules and substrates through pressure modulation. Currently, SERS detection primarily focuses on single molecules at atmospheric pressure with limited investigations conducted under high pressure conditions. Herein, we employed rose-shaped MoS2 nanoflowers as the SERS substrate and realized selective PI-SERS enhancement of R6G molecules in the binary (MV+R6G) and ternary (MV+R6G+RhB) systems. The MoS2 demonstrated an exceptionally low SERS detection limit of 5 × 10–6 M in binary and ternary systems with equimolar amounts of molecules. High-pressure experimental results indicate that MoS2 displays selective enhancement for R6G molecules, as evidenced by the comparison of the PI-SERS peak intensity ratio between MoS2 and the probe molecules. The proposed enhancement mechanism in binary and ternary SERS systems under high pressure involves pressure-induced changes in both the band structures of the MoS2 substrate and molecules, thereby influencing their charge transfer dynamics. Consequently, this approach holds great promise for practical applications in complex SERS systems operating under extreme conditions.

Rapid construction of interfacial plasmonic nanoarray for SERS sensing of flavonoids

Cheng Xu,Junbo Li,Jian Liu,Yaxin Ma,Xiaoshuai Wang,Yunfei Xie,Chunxia Chen,Wei Ji

A rapid, low-cost and reliable interfacial plasmonic nanoarray is presented as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing platform for preliminary quantification and identification of flavonoids. Here, CTAB-modified Au colloidal nanoparticles self-assemble at the cyclohexane/acetone-water interface to form a uniform interfacial plasmonic nanoarray. The target hydrophobic analytes including organic dye methyl red and water-insoluble flavonoids, are effectively captured at the air-water interface and enter the “hot spots” between nanoparticles during the evaporation of the oil phase, which contributes to sensitive and reproducible SERS signals. Furthermore, this remarkable SERS performance enables the quantitative determination of water-insoluble flavonoids such as kaempferol, luteolin and naringenin with low detection limits of 10 −10  M, and an approximately linear correlation between SERS signals and analytical concentrations, as well as rapid multiplex analysis of flavonoids with similar structural characteristics. Additionally, directly relative content detection of crude extracts from lingonberry ( Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.) is achieved on the plasmonic nanoarray, serving as a proof-of-concept demonstration for practical applications. Compared to conventional analyses of flavonoids, the proposed SERS platform circumvents complex and time-consuming pretreatments, thereby opening avenues for the analysis of oil-soluble samples and other secondary metabolites, which will facilitate widespread evaluation of quality and medical value.

Synthesis and optimization strategy for enhancing SERS performance of Cu2O nanoparticles

Shaoxiong Qin,Zixiu Li,Yang Zhang,Jiaqi Pan,Jun Cao,Chaorong Li,Jingjing Wang

The sensitivity and stability of SERS substrates are critical in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectral applications. The present study describes the synthesis of Cu 2 O nanoparticles using a facile chemical method. It was observed that both glucose and NaBH 4 , employed as reducing agents, exerted significant influence on the particle size. Notably, NaBH 4 exhibited enhanced efficacy in producing nanoscale particles. Furthermore, the structural characteristics of the sample were significantly influenced by the concentration of the reducing agent NaBH 4 ; an excessive concentration resulted in the emergence of metal copper. The Cu 2 O nanoparticles, obtained through a suitable reduction process using NaBH 4 , exhibited significant SERS activity, indicating a strong chemical interaction between Cu 2 O and rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules. The N-doped Cu 2 O nanoparticles with varying proportions were synthesized. Raman spectra analysis revealed that the 2%N–Cu 2 O nanoparticles exhibited the most significant enhancement effect. These findings suggest that doping represents an effective approach to enhance the SERS activity of semiconductor substrates. In addition, in-situ reduction reaction was employed to synthesize Cu 2 O/Ag composite nanoparticles, which exhibited outstanding SERS activity and enabled the detection of 10 −9  M R6G. The observed enhancement is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects arising from the electromagnetic enhancement provided by Ag nanoparticles and the chemical enhancement offered by Cu 2 O. This research provides a simple and cost-effective method for preparing Cu 2 O-based SERS substrates with excellent performance, offering valuable insights and approaches for enhancing SERS performance in the future.

Simultaneous Detection of Cu+ and Cu2+ Using Dual-functionalized Glass Micropipette Sensors

Guofeng Wang,Shiwei Xu,Chao Deng,Yueyue Feng,Liying Huang,Qin Guo,Yajun Wang,Min Zhang,Qian Shi,Nannan Liu

Copper ions (Cu + and Cu 2+ ) are vital for physiological functions, and their imbalance is implicated in disease progression. However, simultaneous detection of both species is challenging due to their similar properties. Here, we report a dual-functionalized glass micropipette sensor enabling independent detection of Cu + and Cu 2+ . UiO-66-NH 2 was grown in situ on the inner wall to capture Cu 2+ via amino coordination, reducing ionic current. Glutathione-functionalized carbon nanotubes (GCNTs) coated on the outer surface bind Cu + , increasing SERS signal via enhanced surface defects. The sensor exhibits a wide detection range (10 -1 –10 5 μM), a detection limit of 0.1 μM, and allows simultaneous monitoring of Cu + /Cu 2+ in the physiological range (2–10 μM). It further distinguishes copper ion levels in MCF-10A and MCF-7 cells, revealing altered copper homeostasis in cancer. This platform offers a sensitive, selective tool for studying copper in biological systems.

Insight on a novel Raman spectroscopy based analytical sensor in tracing asphalt volatile organic compounds

Jinyi Wu,Na Li,Quantao Liu,Fusong Wang,Shaopeng Wu,Jianying Yu,Shi Xu,Georgios Pipintakos,Shisong Ren,Wim Van den bergh

Asphalt Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) pose significant environmental impacts and health risks, and associated detection and quantitative analysis methods are widely concerned in recent decades. The study proposed to develop a novel SERS substrate with flower-like silver nanospheres (AgNPs) and ZIF-8 for the Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) based portable gas Raman detection system, whose morphology and crystal structure are interpreted by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After verbalizing the prepared substrate, the repeatability and stability of proposed SERS substrate are measured in analyzing asphalt VOCs. The results indicate that optimizing the concentration of AgNPs to 30 μL could uniformly distribute the coat and form numerous hotspots on the substrate to enhance the Raman signal. The SERS substrate demonstrates excellent repeatability and stability, accurately identifying the characteristic pollutants of asphalt VOCs with a relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 10 %. It achieves a high sensitivity, capable of detecting toluene concentrations down to 0.1 ppm and successfully quantified the toluene concentration in asphalt VOCs as 6.871 mg/cm 3 . This advancement makes the SERS technology be a promising tool for effective monitoring of asphalt VOCs emissions, offering significant potential for environmental monitor and pollutants control.

Synthesis of lipophilic gold nanorod superparticles and their size-dependent SERS performances

Wu Gui-Lin,Deng Tian-Song,Wang Kun-Peng,Zhang Er-Ji,Liu Li-Yong,Cheng Yu-Chun,Gao Jia-Fei,Liu Jie

Gold nanorods are widely used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications due to their strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The self-assembly of gold nanorods further expands their applications and introduces new ensemble properties. In this paper, two types of gold nanorods with similar lengths but significantly different diameters were used for making superparticles. The gold nanorods were first surface-modified with thiol-terminated polystyrene (PS-SH), and then assembled into superparticles through emulsion volatilization. To test the SERS performances of the gold nanorod superparticles, Nile red was used as a dye molecule to test the localization of the SERS performance of the single superparticles. It was found that as the size of the superparticles increased, the SERS performances also improved, with the final Raman signal intensity reaching up to 2 × 10 6 . When the size of the superparticles was the same, the SERS performance was stronger for superparticles composed of gold nanorods with larger diameters. Additionally, a structure similar to the superparticles was designed for FDTD simulations, and the simulated results were highly consistent with the experimental results, further supporting our conclusions.

Determination of Hg2+ in water based on acriflavine functionalized AgNPs by SERS

Baoqin Hao,Xiangfeng Bu,Jiawei Wu,Yanru Ding,Lixia Zhang,Bing Zhao,Yuan Tian

We conducted a related study on the determination of Hg 2+ in water by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). It is based on acriflavine as a signal probe with the assistance of aggregation agent MgSO 4 for the SERS investigation. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of acriflavine were performed for interpreting the assignments of the vibrational normal modes. The interaction of acriflavine with AgNPs was inhibited because the citrate reduced Hg 2+ to Hg and formed Ag amalgam on the AgNPs surface. The formation of Ag-Hg alloys reduced the SERS intensity of acriflavine. This sensing system displayed excellent sensitivity and a detection limit as low as 1.4 mol L   −   1 . The relationship between the SERS intensity and Hg 2+ concentration was found in the range of 0.1–8.0 × 10 −7  mol L   −   1 . This method for detecting Hg 2+ is inexpensive, facile and sensitive.

SERS detection of anthraquinone dyes: Using solvothermal silver colloid as the substrate

Juan Zhu,Jian Liu,Yao Fan,Meixia Wu,Chunsong Zhou,Haiyan Fu,Yuanbin She

Anthraquinone dyes have been widely used to color textile fibers since antiquity. Identification of the dyes can help us understand the dyeing processes and when and where the textiles were produced. Herein, we present a strategy based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with a novel silver colloid substrate for the detection of anthraquinone dyes. Quasi-spherical silver particles with different sizes were prepared by the solvothermal method and then characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The silver colloid substrates exhibited high-density hot spots with good reproducibility (RSDs of 3 ∼ 16 %) and high sensitivity. Among them, Ag- C 2 (the molar ratio of AgNO 3 to PVP is 0.367, reacted for 2 h) was used to detect anthraquinone dyes in reference silk fibers as well as ancient textile samples due to the highest sensitivity and the low RSD (5.37 %) in this study. More importantly, Ag- C 2 can be utilized to distinguish three madder species ( Rubia tinctorum , Rubia cordifolia, and Rubia argyi ) depending on the SERS intensity of alizarin and purpurin.

Ag nanocubes monolayer-modified PDMS as flexible SERS substrates for pesticides sensing

Xia Dacheng,Jiang Panpan,Cai Zhiwei,Zhou Rui,Tu Bo,Gao Nan,Chang Gang,He Hanping,He Yunbin

A new approach is presented to fabricate flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of Ag nanocubes monolayer-modified polydimethylsiloxane (Ag NCs/PDMS) through a powerful three-phase interface self-assemble method. The morphologies and crystal structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The self-assembled Ag NCs/PDMS substrate exhibited high SERS activity and good signal homogeneity, which was successfully used for quantitative detection of thiram; the detection limit reached 10 ng/mL, and the linear range is 10–1000 ng/mL. Furthermore, the flexible SERS substrates were successfully employed to detect thiram residues on factual apple samples, and trace amount (1 ng/cm 2 ) of thiram residues was detected on apple peels. The excellent SERS detection ability of self-assembled Ag NCs/PDMS substrate indicated that it will play an important role in pesticide detection in the future. Graphical abstract

Molecular enrichment strategy enhanced SERS performance of bacterial Nanocellulose V2O5 composite substrate

Jichang Li,Yangchun Zheng,Yue Zhou,Zijuan Fang,Sihang Zhang,Yonghui Zhou,Xiuyi Lin,Jiangtao Xu

Semiconductor-based Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrates generally suffer from critical drawbacks, including insufficient surface adsorption sites and weak enrichment capability toward target probe molecules. To address the bottleneck of limited adsorption and enrichment performance of semiconductor SERS materials, this study proposes a molecular enrichment strategy. V 2 O 5 nanorods rich in oxygen vacancies and with V 5+ /V 4+ mixed valence states are used as the SERS-active component. Benefiting from the three-dimensional porous network, high specific surface area and abundant surface functional groups of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), efficient adsorption and enrichment of probe molecules are realized, thereby achieving synergistic enhancement. The V 2 O 5 /BNC composite SERS substrate is fabricated via a facile vacuum filtration method. The results demonstrate that the composite substrate exhibits a 237.39% higher SERS signal intensity toward methylene blue (MB) than the pure V 2 O 5 substrate, achieving a low limit of detection of 1 × 10 −6  mol/L, along with excellent signal reproducibility and long-term stability. Adsorption and surface analyses suggest that electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding facilitate MB enrichment within the composite membrane. The enhanced Raman response is attributed to the combined effects of BNC-mediated molecular enrichment, possible V 2 O 5 -MB interfacial charge transfer, and morphology-dependent optical contributions. This work presents a facile strategy for constructing flexible, noble-metal-free semiconductor composite SERS substrates with good reproducibility and storage stability.

Gelatin‑silver nanocube composite hydrogel SERS substrate for sensitive detection of thiram

Rongmao Qiu,Yimin Zeng,Yiming Chen,Shuting Huang,Binghua Luo,Dechan Lu,Kui Huang

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful tool for rapid on-site detection of pesticide residues, but its performance heavily relies on the substrate. Herein, a gelatin‑silver nanocube (Ag NC) composite hydrogel SERS substrate was developed via mild EDC-NHS crosslinking coupled with low-temperature gelation. The three-dimensional porous hydrogel efficiently enriches target molecules, while the sharp edges of Ag NCs generate abundant electromagnetic hotspots. Using rhodamine 6G as a probe, the optimized substrate (20% gelatin, Ag NC/gelatin volume ratio 3:1) exhibited good uniformity, reproducibility, and stability. For thiram detection, a linear response was obtained from 10 −4 to 10 −7  M with a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.45 × 10 −8  M in standard solution. Practical applicability was demonstrated in orange juice, where thiram was detected down to 1.0 × 10 −6  M (LOD = 4.78 × 10 −7  M) with recoveries of 96.9–97.9%. This work provides a gelatin-based, stable and sensitive SERS platform for food safety monitoring.

SERS detection of glyphosate by Suspended sandwich Ag/SiO2/Ag nanopore array

Haiyu Tian,Haidong Qi,Yongjun Zhang,Yaxin Wang,Xiaoyu Zhao,Renxian Gao

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful surface analysis technique that significantly amplifies the Raman scattering signals of molecules adsorbed onto metallic nanostructures, enabling highly sensitive detection of the analytes. The development of low-cost, high-performance SERS substrates through facile and straightforward fabrication methods represents a challenging and highly rewarding endeavor. Here, we develop a suspended sandwich Ag/SiO 2 /Ag nanopore array structure based on template-assisted method with significant plasma coupling effects, which shows an ultra-low detection limit (LOD of 2.91 × 10 −11  mol/L) for 4-MBA molecules, excellent sensitivity (EF = 5.76 × 10 8 ) and high uniformity and stability. COMSOL simulation confirms the electromagnetic coupling in the sandwich structure in addition to the hotspots along the nanopore brims. The proposed SERS substrate enables quantitative detection of glyphosate with the concentration down to 4.66 × 10 −9  mol/L and fulfills the requirements for monitoring pesticide residues.
