pH-Sensitive Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle-Controlled Sodium Alginate/Silica Hydrogel Beads: for Controlled Curcumin Release

Xueze Zhang,Yu Xiao,Shuqi Guo,Huifang Wang,Xianghua Gao,Baolong Niu,Wenfeng Li

This study designed a pH-sensitive carrier regulated by zinc oxide nanoparticles for the delivery of the hydrophobic drug curcumin (Cur). Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was used as a stabilizer and dispersant to synthesize CMC-ZnO nanoparticles via an in situ reaction. These nanoparticles were then mixed with sodium alginate (SA) and immersed in a tetraethyl silicate (TEOS) hydrolysis solution to form sodium alginate/silica-zinc oxide (Ss/CMC-ZnO) composite hydrogel beads. XRD, FTIR, SEM, and UV-vis analyses confirmed the successful synthesis and incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles into the hydrogel beads. Swelling experiments demonstrated that as the concentration of CMC-ZnO increased, when the TEOS molar concentration was 0.205 M, the maximum swelling ratio decreased from 39.83 to 14.03, with the time to reach the maximum swelling ratio extending from 4 to 6 hours. At a TEOS concentration of 0.375 M, the swelling ratio decreased from 26.77 to 12.10, with the swelling time extending from 6 to 7 hours. Hemolysis and cytotoxicity tests confirmed the hydrogel beads' good biocompatibility. Cur was incorporated using a blending method, and in vitro release experiments revealed that the Ss/CMC-ZnO hydrogel beads exhibited excellent pH sensitivity. The addition of CMC-ZnO NPs effectively prolonged the release time of curcumin, indicating potential for applications in controlled drug delivery.

Preparation and Characterization of Silica-Coated Sodium Alginate Hydrogel Beads and the Delivery of Curcumin

Yu Xiao,Lu Wang,Xueze Zhang,Yi Ren,Jianhong Wang,Baolong Niu,Wenfeng Li

In this study, to address the defects of sodium alginate (SA), such as its susceptibility to disintegration, silica was coated on the outer layer of sodium alginate hydrogel beads in order to improve its swelling and slow-release properties. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the hydrolyzed precursor, and the solution of silica precursor was prepared by sol-gel reaction under acidic conditions. Then SA–silica hydrogel beads prepared by ionic crosslinking method were immersed into the SiO2 precursor solution to prepare SA–silica hydrogel beads. The chemical structure and morphology of the hydrogel beads were characterized by XRD, FTIR, and SEM, and the results showed that the surface of SA–silica beads was successfully encapsulated with the outer layer of SiO2, and the surface was smooth and dense. The swelling experiments showed that the swelling performance effectively decreased with the increase of TEOS molar concentration, and the maximum swelling ratio of the hydrogel beads decreased from 41.07 to 14.3, and the time to reach the maximum swelling ratio was prolonged from 4 h to 8 h. The sustained-release experiments showed that the SA–silica hydrogel beads possessed a good pH sensitivity, and the time of sustained-release was significantly prolonged in vitro. Hemolysis and cytotoxicity experiments showed that the SA-silica hydrogel beads were biocompatible when the TEOS molar concentration was lower than 0.375 M. The SA–silica-2 hydrogel beads had good biocompatibility, swelling properties, and slow-release properties at the same time.

Sodium alginate/chitosan composite scaffold reinforced with biodegradable polyesters/gelatin nanofibers for cartilage tissue engineering

Chenxi Li,Wenwen Shang,Yuzhe Huang,Jing Ge,Jinqiu Ye,Xin Qu,Quanyi Guo,Ce Wang,Ping Hu,Yong Liu

Cartilage repair remains a significant challenge in tissue engineering. The Sodium alginate/Chitosan hydrogel scaffold, fabricated from natural polymers, has the potential to promote tissue regeneration. However, its poor mechanical performance limits its application. Research has shown that integrating nanomaterials into three-dimensional network materials can significantly enhance mechanical properties, which is particularly important for osteochondral replacement scaffolds. In this study, biodegradable polylactic acid-glycolic acid copolymer/polycaprolactone/gelatin (PLGA/PCL/GEL) nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and integrated as a reinforcing phase. This enhancement significantly improved the mechanical performance of the sodium alginate/chitosan hydrogel, achieving a maximum compressive modulus of 665 kPa and compressive stress of 342 kPa. Moreover, the inherent biocompatibility of the composite scaffold remained high. This work demonstrates the potential of nanofiber/hydrogel scaffolds, contributing to the development of safe and multifunctional materials for clinical application.

Sodium Alginate Aerogel as a Carrier of Organogelators for Effective Oil Spill Solidification and Recovery

Ying Xue,Yun Shen,Xiuping Chen,Limei Dong,Junfeng Li,Yihao Guan,Yiming Li

Marine oil spills pose a serious threat to the marine ecological environment. Phase-selective organogelators (PSOGs) are ideal candidates for oil spill gelation when used in combination with a mechanical recovery method. However, the toxicity of an organic solvent carrier has become a key problem when it is applied in the remediation of marine oil pollution. In this study, through an inexpensive and nontoxic ionic cross-linking and freeze-drying method, we successfully developed composite oil gelling agents that used a biomass sodium alginate aerogel as the carrier of 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA). Simultaneously, carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNF-C) with large specific surface area and graphene oxide (GO) with excellent mechanical properties as reinforcing fillers were combined with an alginate matrix. 12-HSA, as a green and inexpensive organic gelator, was uniformly loaded on the aerogels by vacuum impregnation. The sodium alginate aerogel was capable of absorbing and storing oil due to its three-dimensional network skeleton and high porosity. Rheological studies have demonstrated that the organic gelator 12-HSA can be released from the aerogel substrate and self-assemble to form an oleogel with the absorbed oil quickly. The synergistic effect between absorption and congelation endows the composite oil gelling agent with efficient oil spill recovery capability. Based on eco-friendly, biodegradable, and simple synthesis methods, this composite oil gelling agent shows great potential for application in marine oil spill recovery.

Sodium alginate based adsorbent: Facile fabrication, extraordinary removal efficacy of anionic dyes and adsorption mechanism

Yao Hui,Rukuan Liu,Jingwen Lan,Liuzemu Li,Zhihong Xiao,Airong Xu,Xuefeng Wei

Eco-friendly and renewable sodium alginate, as a potential alternative to fossil resources, has attracted considerable attention in wastewater treatment field. Herein, we develop a SA/PEI/PEG (sodium alginate/polyethyleneimine/polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) adsorbent in which SA was functionalized by PEI/PEG via a facile but effective strategy of one-pot gelation of aqueous SA/PEI/PEG solution. Systematic investigations were accomplished to explore the effects of adsorbent factors on the adsorption performances of the adsorbent towards the anionic dyes CR (congo red), AB-10B (amido black-10B), and AB-25 (acid blue-25). Strikingly, the SA/PEI/PEG exhibited exceptional adsorption performance to CR (2782 mg g −1 , 90.6 %), AB-10B (1369 mg g −1 , 90.9 %) and AB-25 (4221 mg g −1 , 92.6 %) at 30 °C, pH = 3, 200 r min −1 and oscillated 24 h, and demonstrating exceptional reusability after six cycles of adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, the three kinetic, four isothermic and one thermodynamic models were used to investigate the adsorption behaviors of the adsorbent towards these dyes. The possible adsorption mechanism is suggested: Hydrogen bond interactions and electrostatic attractions between SA/PEI/PEG and the dyes primarily contribute to exceptional adsorption capacity. The SA/PEI/PEG adsorbent endowed with easy fabrication, extraordinary adsorption capacity and excellent reusability promises potential application prospects in wastewater purification industry.

Synergistic effect, high-efficient removal of methylene blue based on polyaniline-sodium alginate hydrogel microspheres

Yazhou Guo,Yonggang Du,Guibo Liu,Yuyan Bi,Weiqiang Xu,Yahui Cui,Yulei Jia

Herein, a novel and high-performance adsorbent, polyaniline-sodium alginate (PANI–SA) hydrogel microspheres were prepared via ion cross-linking technique for adsorption and removing methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. The processes involved synthesizing polyaniline (PANI) with macromolecular skeleton and doping it into sodium alginate (SA) to prepare hydrogel microspheres with high specific surface area, abundant functional groups, and excellent adsorption properties. The surface morphology, crystallinity, functional groups, thermal stability, pore size distribution, and specific surface area of PANI–SA hydrogel microspheres and their components were determined by SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, and BET. Various parameters, including polyaniline doped concentration, solution pH, initial dye concentration, adsorption time, and temperature were systematically investigated to understand their impact on the adsorption properties of PANI–SA. The results revealed a synergistic effect between PANI and SA, with PANI–SA exhibiting exceptional efficacy (1060.78 mg/g) in removing MB from aqueous solutions. The kinetics and isotherm adsorption behaviors were aptly described by the pseudo-first-order kinetic and the Langmuir isotherm models, respectively. Thermodynamic analyses confirmed the spontaneous and exothermic nature of adsorption. Furthermore, the PANI–SA hydrogel microspheres demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining high adsorption capacity after 5 recycling rounds. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bond were found to be the primary mechanisms driving the adsorption process. This study not only contributes to the development of efficient and eco-friendly adsorption materials for dye wastewater treatment but also provides insights into the design and optimization of hydrogel adsorbents.

Strong, tough self-healing multi-functional sodium alginate-based edible composite coating for banana preservation

Kejin Yu,Lina Yang,Siyu Zhang,Ning Zhang,He Liu

Edible coatings are a new green technology for preventing the rotting of fruits and extending their shelf lives. However, during storage, respiratory processes can generate large amounts of water, causing the dissolution of these coating. Furthermore, these coating can be mechanically damaged. Therefore, the development of strong, tough, waterproof and self-healing edible coatings is highly desirable. Herein, gluconolactone was slowly oxidized to generate gluconic acid, which was further used to protonate amino groups in wheat gluten (WG), forming strong electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds and ester bonds between soy hull nanocellulose (SHNC) and sodium alginate (SA). The introduction of WG and SHNC improved the mechanical strength, hydrophobicity and water retention of the composite film from 28 MPa, 33.2° ± 1.18° and 19.43° ± 0.83° to 60 MPa, 45.13° ± 1.53° and 41.47° ± 0.96°, respectively. Further, the composite film exhibited excellent self-healing, UV resistance and gas-barrier properties. Banana preservation experiments showed that at 25 °C and 50 % RH, the composite coating effectively slowed the mass loss and softening of bananas, delayed the browning of banana peels and ripening of fruit pulp, and extended the shelf life of bananas to 7 days. Therefore, this study provides a new perspective for the preparation of a new, strong, tough, waterproof and self-healing multi-functional edible coating with high potential for the preservation of perishable fruits.

Intelligent film based on mulberry anthocyanin, sodium alginate, and gellan gum for monitoring pork freshness

Yuan Ji,Shengxu Zhao,Zhenzhu Yang,Qunqun Chen,Xinping Wang,Jianting Yang

A novel sodium alginate/gellan gum-based composite film with mulberry anthocyanins (MAE) as an indicator was developed for real-time pork freshness monitoring. Research showed that the incorporation of MAE significantly improved the physical properties of the composite films, increasing the tensile strength (25.2%), elongation at break (24.6%), and thickness (30.4%). FT-IR, X-RD, and SEM analyses indicate that the compatibility and molecular interactions between MAE and polymer matrix have been enhanced. The composite films exhibited pH-responsive behavior, demonstrating distinct color changes in buffer solutions across a pH range of 2-12. When used to evaluate the freshness of pork, the composite film will show a significant color change, which is consistent with the texture of the pork. The color difference of the films showed a strong linear relationship with the storage time of the pork, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and pH. Therefore, composite films showed great potential for application as smart packaging in monitoring pork freshness.

Biomimetic Anisotropic Polyvinyl Alcohol/Sodium Alginate/MXene Aerogel for Efficient Uremic Toxin Adsorption in Hemoperfusion

Liqin Wu,Xi Luo,Pengpeng Yue,Kalibinuer Yasen,Zibiao Zhong,Shuangquan Wu,Qifa Ye

The accumulation of uremic toxins, which ultimately leads to renal failure, results in systemic complications and necessitates efficient and biocompatible removal strategies. This paper presents the preparation of a biomimetic anisotropic aerogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and MXenes (Ti 3 C 2 T X ) via directional freezing. Inspired by plant vascular bundles, the resulting vertically aligned porous structure enhances the mechanical stability of and mass transfer in the material. The aerogel with its high MXene loading and high surface utilization offers remarkable adsorption capacities for urea (221.77 mg g −1 ) and creatinine (138.07 mg g −1 ). In vitro assays confirm the excellent hemo- and cytocompatibility of the aerogel. In a rabbit model of acute ischemic kidney injury, two-hour hemoperfusion with the aerogel significantly lowers the urea (38.67 to 16.17 mmol L −1 ) and creatinine levels (744.62 to 307.46 µmol L −1 ) without observable toxicity. The multidimensional biomimetic multipore anisotropic MXene aerogel presented here is a structurally optimized and biologically safe adsorbent for efficient uremic toxin clearance and a promising alternative to conventional hemodialysis.

Fabrication and Anti-Swelling Properties of Gelatin/Sodium Alginate–Carboxymethyl Chitosan-Based Cationic Coordination Hydrogels

Haixin Zhao,Jinlong Li,Shuang Cong,Hongman Hou,Gongliang Zhang,Jingran Bi

In this study, the effect of cationic participation on the swelling behavior and pH-responsive release characteristics of polyelectrolyte hydrogel based on gelatin (Gel), sodium alginate (Alg), and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) was explored. The shell–core morphology of the cationic coordination hydrogels was prepared by introducing Na + , Ca 2+ , and Fe 3+ into the crosslinking system, which significantly altered the inherent pH-responsive swelling properties of Gel/Alg-CMCS hydrogel. The modified hydrogel demonstrated a release resistance of carvacrol (CAR) under acidic conditions while facilitating rapid release under neutral conditions. Notably, the CAR release profile was substantially modified by the distinct anti-swelling properties of cationic coordination hydrogels. In particular, Gel/Alg-CMCS-Fe 3+ hydrogel exhibited high accumulative release of 58.34% at pH 1.0 while maintaining a minimal release degree of merely 7% in weakly acidic and neutral environments. These intriguing findings provide valuable insights into intelligent active delivery for future applications.

The role of phlorizin liposome-embedded oxidized sodium alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan in diabetic wound healing

Xiaoyu Wu,Chuanbo Ding,Xinglong Liu,Qiteng Ding,Shuai Zhang,Yue Wang,Chenran Xin,Hewei Wei,Rui Mao,Guiping Zhang,Ting Zhao,Wencong Liu

Wound healing in diabetic patients is often complicated by issues like inflammation, infection, bleeding, and fluid retention. To tackle these challenges, it is essential to create hydrogel dressings with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidative properties. This study aimed to synthesize Phlorizin-Liposomes (PL) through the thin-film dispersion method and integrate them into an oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) hydrogel scaffold, resulting in an OSA/CMCS/PL (PLOCS) composite hydrogel via a Schiff base reaction. Characterization of the composite was performed using FTIR, TEM, and SEM techniques. The research assessed the swelling behavior, antibacterial effectiveness, and biocompatibility of the PLOCS composite hydrogel, while also investigating how PLOCS facilitates diabetic wound healing. The results demonstrated that PLOCS effectively controls drug release, possesses favorable swelling and degradation characteristics, and shows significant antioxidative properties along with in vitro biocompatibility. Histological analysis confirmed that PLOCS supports the proliferation of healthy epithelial tissue and collagen production. Western blotting indicated that PLOCS diminishes inflammation by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB/MyD88 pathway and activates Nrf2 to boost wound healing, increasing the levels of antioxidative enzymes such as HO-1, NQO1, and GCLC. In summary, PLOCS presents a promising new option for advanced wound dressings aimed at treating diabetic ulcers.

Polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate hydrogels with tunable mechanical and conductive properties for flexible sensing applications

Qi Zhou,Shengxu Lu,Chenjing Huang,Debora Puglia,Pengwu Xu,Deyu Niu,Weijun Yang,Piming Ma

Despite the significant advantages of conductive hydrogels in flexible sensing, their further development is often hindered by limitations in strength and conductivity. In this work, the ionic conductive hydrogels with tunable mechanical and conductive properties were designed by utilizing sodium alginate (SA) to reinforce the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) networks, followed by the respective introduction of Li 2 SO 4 , ZnSO 4 , and Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , leveraging the Hofmeister effect and metal coordination. Consequently, the mechanical properties ( σ  = 0.40–2.70 MPa) and conductivity (IC = 0.18–1.02 S/m) can be extensively tuned by adjusting the metal salts with varying oxidation states. Notably, Fe 3+ ions can significantly enhance the mechanical properties, while Li + ions more effectively improve conductivity. Interestingly, the PVA/SA/Zn 2+ hydrogel achieves a balance between mechanical properties ( σ  = 1.86 MPa, ε  = 1110 %) and conductivity (0.92 S/m), ascribing it to the multiple interactions including densification of polymer networks, formation of nanocrystalline domains, and ionic coordination effects. Furthermore, the conductive hydrogel also exhibits low strain detection limit (2.0 %), and demonstrated enormous potential in personal health monitoring and information transmission applications. This work presents a highly efficient and eco-friendly strategy for constructing hydrogels with tunable properties, while elucidating the mechanisms behind the enhanced mechanical and conductive performance.
