Rational Design of NiCo2O4/Ti3C2 MXene Heterostructure for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles-Enabled Real-Time CO Monitoring

Meiling Lian,Kexin Luan,Tianlun He,Da Chen

The integration of gas sensors with small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has attracted widespread attention in atmospheric chemistry, industrial emission monitoring and environmental protection. However, conventional metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors currently installed on UAVs exhibit issues such as inadequate sensitivity, long response times, and unsatisfactory stability. In this direction, NiCo2O4 inserted two-dimensional layered Ti3C2 MXene have synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method for CO detection. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were first employed to explore CO adsorption behaviors, revealing that the adsorption energy of gas molecules is significantly reduced after the combination of NiCo2O4 and MXene. The optimized MXene incorporation effectively prevents nanoparticle agglomeration, significantly increasing the specific surface area and exposing abundant active sites for gas adsorption. As a result, the hybrid sensor exhibited more than five times higher response toward 100 ppm CO at 110 °C with shorter response time (39 s) than pristine NiCo2O4. Through in situ Raman spectroscopy analysis, we elucidated the rapid adsorption–desorption of gas molecules on heterostructures. Furthermore, we successfully implemented the developed NiCo2O4/Ti3C2 MXene sensor on a compact drone platform, enabling real-time three-dimensional spatial mapping of CO concentrations. This work not only advances the design of high-performance gas sensing materials but also showcases the practical viability of drone-mounted MXene sensors for real-time 3D air quality mapping, paving the way for smart environmental monitoring systems.

Exploiting Cu2O-MXene(Ti3C2) photocatalysts with visible light drive for the degradation of sulfamethazine in the environment

Zongbin Liu,Xiaojiao Yu,Kai Wang,Yuchen Wei,Jian Zhang,Jinfen Niu

Photocatalytic technology has received a great deal of attention due to its high efficiency and environmentally friendly properties in the treatment of wastewater. MXene, a rapidly expanding family of two-dimensional materials, is widely used in various fields due to its unique layered structure, large specific surface area, excellent hydrophilicity and strong electrochemical performance. In this paper, a simple hydrothermal method has been used to synthesize Cu 2 O-MXene(Ti 3 C 2 ) photocatalysts. The successful introduction of Ti 3 C 2 MXene reduced the surface transfer resistance to promote electron transfer, effectively inhibited electron-hole complexation and increased the specific surface area of the catalyst. The prepared samples have excellent photocatalytic properties due to the above-mentioned advantages. Efficient degradation of antibiotics was achieved with the maximum degradation rate of sulfamethazine (SM2) by M 2 -Cu 2 O reaching 85.7 % in 160 min. It was experimentally confirmed that • O 2 ‐ and h + played the major roles in the degradation process, and possible degradation pathways and photocatalytic mechanisms were proposed in conjunction with HPLC-MS/MS. Finally, the intermediate products were tested for their biotoxicity. This work provides a strategy for the construction of highly catalytically active Cu 2 O-based catalysts.

Photocatalytic self-cleaning graphene oxide membrane coupled with carbon nitride and Ti3C2-Mxene for enhanced wastewater purification

Wenwen Tu,Yucheng Liu,Mingyan Chen,Lili Ma,Lingli Li,Bing Yang

In this study, an original photocatalytic self-cleaning composite membrane with the fabrication of graphene oxide (GO), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and g-C 3 N 4 (CN)/amorphous Ti-peroxo complexes (CATC) was prepared on the commercial cellulose acetate membrane (CAM) through the vacuum filtration approach to overcome the common membrane fouling issues. The material properties of composites or membranes were characterized. Here, the permeability and separation performance of membranes were optimized by CATC and PAA dosages. A series of membrane separation tests revealed that the produced membrane had better permeability and dye removal capabilities. A pure water flux (PWF) of the GO/PAA/CATC (GPC) membrane was 30.95 L·m −2 ·h −1 , corresponding to 3.43 times in comparison to that of the pure GO membrane. The removal efficiencies for the GPC membrane towards methylene blue (MB), rhodamine b (RhB), Cu(NO 3 ) 2 , and congo red (CR) were over 99% due to the hydrogen bond, π-π, electrostatic, and physical sieving effects. Also, the GPC membrane demonstrated a favorable separation performance towards oil/water emulsion (over 98%). In addition, the GPC membrane maintained stable rejections towards MB, CR, RhB, and Cu(NO 3 ) 2 at pH 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 environments. Meanwhile, the self-cleaning GPC membrane was endowed with satisfactory reusability after 6 cycles because of the photocatalytic effect at the roles of h + , O 2 − , and OH free radicals. Hence, it can be expected that the GPC membrane synthesized in this study poses a favorable utilization capability in wastewater treatment.

An In Situ Oxidation Strategy for Ti3C2@TiO2 Heterojunction: Narrow-Band Photodetection and Trace Chromium Ion Determination

Jiahui Hou,Jiale Ai,Mingqi He,Yang Wu,Lingniu Yang,Yingjie Yuan,Xuanhao Lao,Artem V. Kuklin,Liang Chen,Hans Ågren,Lingfeng Gao,Youju Huang

Ti 3 C 2 MXene has frequently been applied in photodetection, while there are few works directly utilizing Ti 3 C 2 MXene as an active material due to the fast carrier recombination. The construction of MXene-based heterojunctions have been demonstrated to further enhance the photo-response performance. In this work, a Ti 3 C 2 @TiO 2 heterojunction was fabricated by an in situ oxidation approach and used to construct a photoelectrochemical photodetector. The as-fabricated photodetector exhibits a narrow-spectrum response (334–380 nm), with an optimized photocurrent density of 6.43 µA/cm 2 and a photoresponsivity of 5057.14 µA/W. Benefiting from interface engineering, the Ti 3 C 2 @TiO 2 -based photodetector possesses excellent stability and sensitive response to chromium. A large range of 10 −12 –10 −6 M could be achieved in a tea water matrix with an ultra-low detection limit of 7.6 × 10 −12 M. We anticipate that this study will provide an effective approach for the design of MXene-based photodetectors and pave the way for online chromium monitoring sensors in particular.

Dynamic Proton Extraction from Supramolecular Functionalized Metal–Organic Framework/Ti3C2 MXene Hybrids for Efficient Solar Ammonia Synthesis

Ying Tang,Juan Jia,Hui Zeng,Zebao Rui

In N2 photoreduction, photogenerated holes and electrons are involved in H2O photolysis for proton supply and the weakening of the N≡N triple bond for N2 activation, respectively. Rationally regulating the structure–activity relationship of these catalytic sites for available generation of charge carriers is crucial for optimizing N2-to-NH3 conversion efficiency. Herein, a robust photothermal catalyst carboxyl-enriched supramolecular (perylene tetracarboxylic acid, PTA) functionalized MIL-125(Ti)/MXene having dynamic proton extraction sites is designed for efficient N2 photoreduction. Among these, MIL-125(Ti), PTA, and Ti3C2 MXene are, respectively, responsible for N2 activation, reliable proton supply through interconversion between Brønsted acid and its conjugated base, and a photothermal response for accelerated reaction kinetics. The synergistic collaboration of these functionally distinct modules enhances light harvesting and responsiveness for dynamic multielectron/proton extraction, thereby facilitating feasible photothermal catalytic ammonia production. Remarkably high solar-to-ammonia conversion rates of 314.5–654.7 μmol g–1 h–1 are achieved under 100–500 mW cm–2 illumination. This work provides insights into the rational design of an efficient solar ammonia synthesis system.

One-step rapid synthesis Ti-O-rich Ti3C2 MXene via NH4HF2 hydrothermal etching for high charge storage

Xuefeng Sha,Xianyin Song,Qiwei Shangguan,Yawei Lv,Fan Zeng,Xingang Zhang,Xueli Wu,Minghao Yu,Changzhong Jiang

MXene has emerged as a promising alternative to carbon-based capacitor materials since its inception, however, the current practical implementation still faces dual challenges: environmentally hazardous, time-consuming synthesis procedures and intrinsically low-concentration pseudocapacitive active sites. Herein, a short-duration, eco-friendly and high-efficiency double fluoride salt hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate Ti 3 C 2 MXene with unparalleled electrochemical properties. A comprehensive and good balance, including rapid MAX phase etching, just-right titanium terminal water oxidation, and ammonia reduction activation, is achieved via a one-step NH 4 HF 2 hydrothermal reaction at 160 °C for merely 1 h (TOR-MXene). It drastically outperforms conventional HF acid etching at 60 °C for 48 h (P-MXene). Systematic experimental characterizations (HRTEM, SAXS, XPS, EXAFS, EPR and in-situ XRD, in-situ Raman) and DFT calculations consistently reveal that instead of the generally believed pore expansion, the abundant highly-reduced titanium dioxide nanoclusters anchored on the surface of MXene exhibit substantial pseudocapacitive activation, accompanied by the threshold Bader charge of Ti atoms exceeding 10.5 |e|. Consequently, the prepared TOR-MXene delivers a remarkable specific capacitance of 446.1 F g −1 even at the ultrahigh current density of 30 A g −1 , a sixfold improvement over the P-MXene of 74.8 F g −1 . Moreover, the TOR-MXene electrode displays around 91.2% capacitance retention over 50,000 cycles, showing an extremely high cycling stability. This strategy establishes atomic-level design principles for MXene-based energy storage, advancing efficient synthesis and performance optimization.

Electrochemical sensor based on Ti3C2/MnO/NiNPs composite material for simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid and dopamine

Jiajia Zhang,Xin Wang,Sumin Xu,Jianying Qu

In this study, NiMn MOFs were in-situ grown on Ti 3 C 2 and then calcined at high temperature to obtain the Ti 3 C 2 /MnO/NiNPs nanocomposites. A series of characterization including SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS and electrochemical techniques were carried out to investigate the elemental composition, morphology, structure and performance of the materials. The experiments demonstrated that the sensor based on this material has good electrocatalytic activity to redox reactions of ascorbic acid (AA) and dopamine (DA) and could simultaneously detect them. Under the optimal conditions, the oxidation currents of AA and DA showed significant linear relationships with their concentrations in the ranges of 50.00–6000.00 μM and 0.20–120.00 μM, respectively. The detection limits were 17.92 μM and 0.03 μM, respectively. This sensor could effectively detect AA and DA in artificial urine samples simultaneously, and exhibited good stability, repeatability, anti-interference ability and a wider linear range, showing potential application prospects.

Highly sensitive determination of CA19-9 using a polydopamine-quenched ZnPc/Ti3C2 Schottky junction-based photoelectrochemical immunosensor

Jiamin Xie,Guangrui Zou,Wenzhan Yu,Linyan Chen,Yuxiu Jiang,Xiaoping Wei,Jianping Li

Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) is a key biomarker for early diagnosis of various malignancies, including lung cancer. Herein, a ZnPc/Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction photosensitive material was synthesized via a novel one-pot strategy and utilized for the first time to construct a photoelectrochemical sandwich immunosensor. Taking advantage of the reducing property of Ti 3 C 2 , gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were in-situ generated on ZnPc/Ti 3 C 2 to form ZnPc/Ti 3 C 2 /AuNPs nanocomposite, which was then immobilized onto a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode. The AuNPs provided a large surface area and biocompatible interface for efficient loading of capture antibody (Ab1). Upon target CA19-9 recognition, the polydopamine-labeled detection antibody (PDA-Ab2) was introduced, triggering a dual photocurrent quenching mechanism through which PDA acted as an electron trap, capturing photoelectrons from ZnPc/Ti 3 C 2 /AuNPs, while the bulky immunocomplex competed with the electrode for light absorption, reducing irradiation of the photosensitive material. This synergistic quenching enabled highly sensitive CA19-9 detection with a linear range of 0.001–200 U/mL and a detection limit of 0.53 mU/mL. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to CA19-9 determination in serum samples with a relative error within 10% compared with hospital reference values, demonstrating its potential for clinical diagnostics.

In situ polymerization-intercalated polypyrrole/Ti3C2 MXene hybrids with excellent electromagnetic wave absorption and superior corrosion protection

Hao Siyu,Zhu Qingsong,Peng Xingna,Fan Jiayi,He Zimeng,Li Wei

Given the rapid advancements in digital and communication technology, electromagnetic wave pollution has emerged as a pressing concern for society. In addition, wave-absorbing materials are typically utilized in complex and dynamic environments, where they are susceptible to corrosion, which can result in a reduction in their effectiveness. Herein we synthesized a polypyrrole functionalized Ti 3 C 2 MXene (PPy-TM) hybrid with significant electromagnetic wave absorption and superior corrosion resistance by in situ polymerization method, which due to the in situ polymerization process of PPy on TM's surface causes the smoothness of TM's surface to turn coarse. The composite exhibited an optimal reflection loss of − 35.5 dB at 3.60 GHz for a 7.50 mm thickness. Additionally, the value of |Z| 0.01 Hz for PPy-TM 0.5% (5.1218 × 10 4  Ω cm 2 ) was an order of magnitude higher than the WEP (7.9778 × 10 3  Ω cm 2 ) coating after 30 days of exposure to 3.5 wt% NaCl electrolyte. This study establishes a benchmark for designing next-generation materials that integrate robust microwave absorption with long-term corrosion protection.

MXene-Derived g-C3N5/TiO2/Ti3C2 Nanoheterostructure Activated by Peroxymonosulfate for Photocatalytic Tetracycline Degradation under Visible Light

Yuan Bai,Jie Liu,Weiting Huang,Xintong Shen,Haoyu Zheng,Kexin Hu

Graphical Under visible light, a Z-type heterojunction is formed between Ti 3 C 2 /TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 5 to enhance charge separation. Electrons and holes directly or indirectly react with PMS to generate free radicals such as · ,·OH, and 1 O 2 to degrade tetracycline. Photocatalysis-assisted peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is a promising technology for the degradation of antibiotics in water remediation. Herein, MXene-derived oxide (TiO 2 ) and g-C 3 N 5 Z-scheme ternary heterojunction photocatalytic composite materials are synthesized using an electrostatic self-assembly approach and characterized. The optimized g-C 3 N 5 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 (CNTT) heterostructure demonstrates exceptional photocatalytic activity for tetracycline (TC) removal, achieving 90% degradation within 60 min at an optimal g-C 3 N 5 :TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 mass ratio of 3:2. Remarkably, the system exhibits broad pH adaptability (80.8–96.3% TC removal across pH 2–12), overcoming the pH sensitivity limitations of traditional PMS-based processes. Mechanistic investigations reveal a synergistic photocatalysis-PMS activation pathway, with quenching experiments confirming , ·OH, · , and 1 O 2 , as dominant reactive species. The CNTT composite maintains 65.2% degradation efficiency after five cycles, demonstrating robust stability. Coexisting ions negatively influence TC removal in the order: H 2 PO 4 − > > Cl − > > . This work establishes the CNTT heterostructure as a promising, environmentally tolerant candidate for efficient pharmaceutical pollutant remediation in complex aqueous matrices.

Huang Yi-Rui,Li Wei,Wang Ze-Hong,Jian Xiao-Jian,Zhou Zi-Zhe,Jia Xiang-Xiang,Liu Hong-Yu,Lu Yi-Fan,Wang Jun-Chuan,Wu Xiang-Feng,Wang Hui,Zhou Er-Peng

Chiral optoelectronic sensors detect chirality by selectively binding with chiral substrates, causing changes in electrical signals, which have attracted wide attention for their chiral recognition ability. In this study, the Ti 3 C 2 /ZIF-67/D-His electrochemical sensors were successfully synthesized. Firstly, ZIF-67/D-His was obtained using hexahydrated cobalt nitrate, dimethylimidazole, and D-histidine (D-His). Then, the ZIF-67/D-His film was grown on the surface of the Ti 3 C 2 film using a spin-coating method. By changing the spin-coating cycles, the influence of the ZIF-67/D-His film thickness on the detection performance was studied. The results showed that when the spin-coating cycle was three, the electrochemical sensor (Ti 3 C 2 /ZIF-67/D-His-3) exhibited good detection performance for D-Ala with a detection limit of 1.1 μM, and additionally demonstrated an excellent selective detection ability for D-Ala, with a significant difference in the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) current intensity between D-Ala and L-Ala solutions. Besides, the detection curve for D-Ala showed a linear relationship with the concentration of the D-Ala solution. Furthermore, the Ti 3 C 2 /ZIF-67/D-His-3 electrochemical sensor demonstrated good stability and could be reused multiple times after simple cleaning. The Ti 3 C 2 /ZIF-67/D-His prepared in this work shows promising application potential in the area of electrochemical sensors.

Photothermal–Immunomodulatory Hydrogel Reinforced by Ti3C2/ZnAl-LDH Nanoplatform for Eradicating MRSA and Promoting Diabetic Wound Healing

Qiang Shi,Renliang Zhao,Jia Wang,Zhenchen Xiong,Xiangtian Deng,Cheng Zheng,Wenzhi Zhang

MRSA infections give rise to chronic cutaneous and advance into profound tissue invasions, including osteomyelitis and sepsis—conditions for which existing clinical interventions offer only limited efficacy. The utility of broad-spectrum antibiotics has become increasingly compromised by escalating drug resistance, inadequate tissue targeting, and deleterious side effects. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have emerged as a compelling immunotherapeutic avenue for eradicating multidrug-resistant pathogens. Inspired by the bactericidal and immunoregulatory functions of NETs, we developed a photothermal–immunomodulatory hydrogel reinforced by a Ti 3 C 2 /ZnAl-LDH nanoplatform to mimic NETs-like antimicrobial defense while overcoming their inherent limitations. Hollow photothermal nanoparticles were fabricated from 2D Ti 3 C 2 and ZnAl-LDH (TiZ) nanosheets and infused with chlorogenic acid, forming CTiZ. These were cloaked in membranes derived from apoptotic neutrophils to create a NETs-mimetic functional bacterial trapper (CTiZM), which was then encapsulated within a thermoresponsive dopa-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel (dopa-PNIPAm, DP), yielding a composite hydrogel system designated CTiZM@DP. This sophisticated platform amplifies antibacterial potency through effective microbial entrapment and the generation of reactive oxygen species, while simultaneously orchestrating the polarization of macrophages toward a reparative M2 phenotype under the influence of gentle photothermal stimulation. Collectively, this integrative strategy heralds a promising therapeutic modality for the eradication of multidrug-resistant infections and the enhancement of wound healing in individuals with diabetes.
