Improvement of the stability of nanocrystalline (NC) materials is always a challenge. In this paper, the high thermal stability is achieved in a representative NC W alloy by combining nano-segregation of Ti solute to W grain boundary (GBs), and in-situ formation of nano Ti–Zr–O particles, which provide both thermodynamic and kinetic stabilization effects through solute dragging and particle pinning. The recrystallization temperature of this bulk NC W alloy reaches up to 1600 °C, and these nanometric microstructures maintain stable under a long-time and high-temperature ordeal up to 1200 °C for 120 h. And its microhardness and micro-compressive yield strength are ∼17.0 and 5.14 GPa, respectively. In addition, this bulk NC W alloy has high irradiation stability due to the high densities of stabled GBs and phase boundaries. This work demonstrates the possibility of attaining high-stability bulk NC materials in terms of segregation of solutes at GBs and in-situ formation of ultrafine nanoparticles with a coherent interface with the W matrix.

During the production and transportation of deep-water oil and gas, the low-temperature and high-pressure operating environment might induce hydrate formation and eventual blockage, which poses a serious threat to the flow assurance. Furthermore, the formation, aggregation and deposition characteristics of hydrate would become more complicated in the presence of asphaltene. Consequently, clarifying the effect of asphaltene on hydrate nucleation and growing process plays an important role in the safety production and flow assurance of deep-water oil and gas field. The kinetic characterizations of hydrate nucleation and growth in W/O systems containing asphaltene were investigated via experimental research, molecular dynamics simulations and mathematical modeling. Results revealed that the hydrate nucleation induction time increased with the increase of asphaltene content. The inhibition of hydrate nucleation by asphaltene in high-pressure (5 MPa) experiments was more pronounced than that in low-pressure (3 MPa). On the other hand, asphaltene restrained hydrate formation and the total gas consumption decreased with the increase of asphaltene content. The dynamic adsorption process of asphaltene at oil–water interface and the evolution of the surface coverage with time were elucidated by jointly solving the Ward-Tordai and Langmuir equation. Combined with the above aspects, the induction time model containing asphaltene was developed, which could provide a new perspective and methodology for deep-water flow assurance

The emulsion separation of oily wastewater is always a challenge topic in both fundamental research and practical application. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol formaldehyde composite sponges (PVF/PVF) with hierarchical pore structure were established by physical absorption/chemical crosslinking and hydrophobic modification via introducing hydrophobic long alkyl chain. As a result, pore size was adjusted from 74.8 µm of pristine PVF to less than 20 µm of hydrophobic PVF, the water contact angle was 120° for final as-prepared sponges, i.e. size sieving and surface wettability could meet the need of emulsion separation. As-prepared sponges could separate W/O (water-in-oil) emulsion efficiently only under the action of gravity, with a maximum flux of 2.9 × 10 5 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 and separation efficiency nearly 100 %. More importantly, the as-prepared sponges displayed excellent reusability, which could be recovered by simply washing. These composite sponges, which were obtained by a simple method and low cost, could be easily scaled up in practical production process, providing an outstanding candidate material for efficient W/O emulsion separation.

Perovskite oxides have been established as a promising kind of catalyst for alkaline oxygen evolution reactions (OER), because of their regulated non-precious metal components. However, the surface lattice is amorphous during the reaction, which gradually decreases the intrinsic activity and stability of catalysts. Herein, the precisely control tungsten atoms substituted perovskite oxides (Pr0.5Ba0.5Co1-xWxO3-δ) nanowires were developed by electrostatic spinning. The activity and Tafel slope were both dependent on the W content in a volcano-like fashion, and the optimized Pr0.5Ba0.5Co0.8W0.2O3-δ exhibits both excellent activity and superior stability compared with other reported perovskite oxides. Due to the outermost vacant orbitals of W6+, the electronic structure of cobalt sites could be efficiently optimized. Meanwhile, the stronger W-O bond could also significantly improve the stability of latticed oxide atoms to impede the generation of surface amorphous layers, which shows good application value in alkaline water splitting.

Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions have numerous applications in many industries like foods, pharmaceuticals, in particular biphasic bio-catalysis. However, most of them are stabilized by surfactants or synthetic particles, which lead to limited uses in foods. Here, a W/O type Pickering emulsion was successfully prepared firstly by ordered ethyl cellulose-chitosan complex particles (ECCPs) and used for a recyclable biocatalytic micro-reactor. The performances of emulsions with different ethyl cellulose-chitosan ratios, water phase fraction and particle concentration were discussed. The type of emulsions could be shifted from W/O to W/O/W and O/W as water fraction increased. Interestingly, a recyclable bio-catalytic microreactor platform was constructed using such novel W/O emulsions, and the activity of lipase was significantly increased by encapsulating it into Pickering emulsions, and was 6.3-times higher than that of free lipase in biphasic system. In particular, the encapsulated lipase remained stable and could be recycled over 15 times without the loss of activity.

Metallurgical bonding was achieved between carbide-dispersion-strengthened Cu (CDS-Cu) and oxide-dispersion-strengthened W (ODS-W) after diffusion bonding via an interface tailoring method of anodization and deoxidation of ODS-W combined with the introduction of Cu wetting layer. The shear strength of the CDS-Cu/ODS-W joints fabricated by the interface-tailoring bonding is 124 MPa, which is higher than that of 99 MPa of the joint prepared by direct bonding. The increase in strength is due to the achievement of the metallurgical bonding between CDS-Cu/ODS-W, the increase of the debonding energy and the increase of propagation distance of the cracks. After metallurgical bonding, the second phase particles of WC in CDS-Cu and Y 2 O 3 in ODS-W were dispersed at the phase boundary to reduce the lattice strain energy. This work paves the way for the preparation of advanced plasma-facing components comprised of high-performance CDS-Cu and ODS-W for China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR).

The influence of trace elements on the powder metallurgy of Cu was investigated. It was found that 1 wt. % of Ti can effectively increase the green density of the compacts and facilitate the subsequent sintering process, thus resulting in increased sintered density. Although 1 wt. % of W added into the Cu leads to similar increasing of green density, W significantly retarded the sintering process and has a negative effect on the sintered density. Moreover, intermetallic Cu 4 Ti were formed, which not only creates a short-circuit diffusion path for Cu but also forms liquid phases during sintering. However, it was hardly dissolved between W and Cu.

Designing efficient and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for seawater electrolysis is crucial for large-scale hydrogen production. Here, we introduce a theory-driven design of metal/WN electrocatalysts, with metal strongly coupled to lattice-matched WN. Theoretical calculations for Pt/WN reveal that W sites enhance H 2 O adsorption/dissociation, optimizing Pt’s H binding. The prepared Pt/WN@CP nanorod can catalyze HER with low overpotentials of 107 and 113 mV at 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline water/seawater, respectively, surpassing Pt/C. Extended calculations and experiments show that the optimized Ni/WN@CP-90 achieves an optimal Δ G H* and overpotential of 219 mV at 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline seawater, demonstrating the versatility of the WN support to promote HER activity. Notably, the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE) constructed by Pt/WN@CP or Ni/WN@CP-90 with NiFe-LDH@NF demonstrates outstanding hydrogen production activity with excellent Faraday efficiency (∼100%) and durability (120 h), indicating the potential application of WN-supported catalysts for efficient, stable seawater electrolysis.

Understanding the thermal behavior of emulsions with complex structures was crucial for wider applications. However, the correlations between the structural units and emulsion properties at different temperatures are poorly understood. Herein, W/O emulsions stabilized by oleogels and nanoparticles were studied during thermal process, and dynamic interactions among the structural units occurred at micro-, meso-, and macroscales. Results revealed that the thermal behavior of W/O emulsions shifted from stable (25–50 °C) to sub-stable (50–60 °C), and unstable states (60–80 °C). Microstructural analysis confirmed that the particles desorbed from the interface and dissolved in the oil phase after heating, causing water droplet coalescence in the emulsions. This was attributed to the enhanced hydrophobic interactions between the particle dispersions and the oleogel, as the contact angle and interfacial tension were decreased during heating. At the mesoscale, the T 2 values of oleogels and nanoparticle dispersion were increased more than three times from 25 °C to 80 °C, leading to the higher mobility of protons in emulsions. At the macroscale, the viscoelastic modulus of emulsions at higher temperature were higher, together with less energy dissipated by friction and increased nonlinear response. Furthermore, the temperature-induced transformation of emulsion stability can be reversibly controlled at least three times. Insights into the complex behavior of emulsions across different temperature stages can inspire the design of emulsions for specific applications.

This study was designed to improve the stability of medium internal phase emulsion by adjusting the electrostatic interaction between gelatin (GLT) and TEMPO-oxidized bacterial cellulose nanofibrils (TOBC). The influences of polysaccharide-protein ratio (1:10, 1:5, and 1:2.5) and pH (3.0, 4.7, 7.0, and 11.0) on the emulsion properties were investigated. The droplet size of TOBC/GLT-stabilized emulsion was increased with the TOBC proportion increasing at pH 3.0–11.0. Additionally, emulsion had a larger droplet size at pH 4.7 (the electrical equivalence point pH of mixtures). However, the addition of TOBC significantly improved the emulsion stability. The emulsions prepared with TOBC/GLT mixtures (mixing ratio of 1:2.5) at pH 3.0–7.0 were stable without creaming during the storage. It was because the formation of nanofibrils network impeded the droplet mobility, and the emulsion viscosity and viscoelastic modulus were increased with the addition of TOBC. These findings were meaningful to modulate the physical properties of emulsions.

Developing high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is of great interest for the large-scale high-purity hydrogen production , which, unfortunately, is largely blocked by the sluggish kinetics of the electro-chemical dissociation step of water molecules. Herein, a MOF-derived method has been developed to prepare Ru nanoparticles-anchored sponge-like WNO embedded in N-doped carbon layers (Ru@WNO-C). The fabricated catalyst Ru@WNO-C (Ru: 0.9 wt%) shows excellent HER catalytic activity and long-term stability with the overpotentials of 172, 358 and 24 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , 1 M Na 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH, respectively. More impressively, the overpotentials, especially in neutral medium, decrease markedly during the durability tests owing to the catalyst structure activation after residual Zn species leaching. The enhanced catalytic activity of Ru@WNO-C during operation is mainly attributed to the in-situ electron donation from Ru to W, leading to the easier cleavage of highly polarized H‒OH bond of water molecules and thus endowing Ru@WNO-C with excellent HER catalytic performance in non-acidic solution.
