Hierarchically flower-like WS2 microcrystals for capture and recovery of Au (III), Ag (I) and Pd (II)

Lun Wang,Keming Wang,Ruihua Huang,Zhen Qin,Yingchun Su,Shanshan Tong

In the past few years, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have emerged great potential for the removal of valuable metals and the capture of polluted-heavy metals. Herein, hierarchically flower-like microcrystals with 2D WS 2 nanosheets (F-WS 2 MCs) were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis strategy and its adsorption performances for precious metals were systematically assessed. The excellent adsorption efficiencies of ∼86.8%, ∼27.6%, and ∼94.1% towards Ag (I), Pd (II), and Au (III) respectively were achieved within 120 min, and the adsorption curves were in good agreement with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model showing a fast uptake rate at the optimum pH values (1.30 for Au (III), 1.43 for Ag (I), and 3.20 for Pd (II)). The adsorption isotherm followed well in the Langmuir model with the maximum removal capacities ( q max ) of 186.2 mg g −1 for Ag (I), 67.29 mg g −1 for Pd (II), and 1340.6 mg g −1 for Au (III), respectively. Furthermore, for recycling purposes, the relevant desorption solution was investigated with different ratios of monobasic acid and thiourea , suggesting the best desorption efficiency of 93.03%, 88.08%, and 85.34% for Ag (I), Pd (II), and Au (III), respectively. By characterizing the crystalline phase, and micromorphology element mapping of F-WS 2 MCs before and after adsorption, the strong affinity and significant adsorption–reduction were indicated to dominate the adsorption process. Therefore, this work broadens the application range of WS 2 microcrystals, providing an alternative material for capturing precious metals and wastewater treatment applications.

Synergistic regulation of electronic structure and nanosheet morphology in Ru-doped WS2 for high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction

Huang Xiaoyu,Zhang Yaowen,Yang Jian,Xiao Zhizhong,Lu Huidan,Liu Yongping

The synergistic modulation of both the surface electronic configuration and micromorphology of the catalyst is crucial for its electrochemical hydrogen evolution activity. This research successfully developed an efficient Ru-WS 2 NS/CC electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using a simple two-step strategy involving a solvothermal reaction followed by chemical vapor deposition. The catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity and remarkable stability in acidic electrolyte, demonstrating an overpotential of 128.8 mV (at 10 mA cm − 2 ), a Tafel slope of 58.7 mV dec − 1 , and a low charge transfer resistance of only 3.8 Ω, while maintaining high catalytic activity for at least 24 h under acidic conditions. The enhanced HER performance of the Ru-WS 2 NS/CC catalyst is attributed to two main factors: first, the strong electronic interaction induced by Ru doping, which improves the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity; second, the uniform and thin nanosheet morphology of WS 2 provides a highly developed surface area that facilitates hydrogen adsorption and desorption. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations further indicate that introducing Ruthenium (Ru) dopants substantially lowers the Gibbs free energy (ΔG H* ) associated with hydrogen adsorption on the catalyst. Analysis of charge density differences corroborates that such doping strategy efficiently tailors the electronic configuration of the WS 2 support, thereby optimizing its interfacial characteristics. This work proposes an effective electronic structure modulation strategy for developing three-dimensional materials into high-efficiency hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts.

Enhancing the Hydrophobic, Mechanical, and Insulation Properties of Silicone Rubber Insulators by Incorporating WS2 and MoS2 2D Nanosheets

Mahmoud A. Ali,Xingliang Jiang,Qin Hu,Hang Zhang,Ahmed S. Menesy,Ruta W. Deusdedith

Silicone rubber is widely recognized for its hydrophobic and mechanical properties, making it a suitable material for high-voltage insulation. This study investigates a novel approach to improving these properties by incorporating two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials into liquid silicone rubber (LSR). Particularly, exfoliated tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets are implemented and contrasted with their nanoparticle counterparts. To improve dispersion and interfacial bonding, all fillers were surface-functionalized using (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). The results demonstrate that the incorporation of 2D nanosheets leads to substantial enhancement in hydrophobicity, mechanical strength, and electrical insulation. The composites achieved the highest hydrophobicity classification (HC1) according to the IEC TS 62073 standard, with a maximum contact angle of 139.9°, a 32% improvement over nanoparticles and unfilled samples. Mechanical tests according to ISO 37 showed increases of up to 68% in tensile strength and 72% in elongation at break. Furthermore, electrical insulation tests demonstrated that breakdown voltage improved by 17.9% and flashover voltage by 17.3% for nanosheet-filled samples. The results emphasize the efficacy of APTES-functionalized 2D nanosheet materials in the advancement of silicone rubber insulators for outdoor high-voltage applications, leading to a substantial enhancement in their performance and longevity.

Enhanced catalytic activities of natural iron ore in peroxymonosulfate activation assisted by WS2 for rapid degradation of pollutants

Lu Chen,Chao Wang,Wenjie He,Haibo Li,Zhihong Ye,Yin Xu

The seek for efficient and low-cost heterogeneous catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation holds great promise in the treatment of organic contaminants. Natural iron ore (IO) has been identified as a potential catalyst due to its low environmental risk and cost-savings. Herein, the commercial tungsten sulfide (WS 2 ) was employed to significantly enhance the performance of IO towards PMS activation (WS 2 /IO/PMS) for the removal of pollutants. This system demonstrated remarkable performance, with >98.2% removal of organic pollutants in 60 min, including dyes and antibiotics, under the optimized conditions of 0.50 g/L IO, 0.10 g/L WS 2 , 2.0 mM PMS, and initial pH 6.0. The apparent degradation rate constant ( k ) of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in WS 2 /IO/PMS system (0.073 min −1 ) was about 30.4-fold and 104.3-fold higher than that of in WS 2 /PMS system (0.0024 min −1 ) and IO/PMS system (0.0007 min −1 ), respectively. Mechanism insights revealed the crucial role of WS 2 in boosting the degradation kinetics in the WS 2 /IO/PMS system. The exposed W 4+ or S 2− species on WS 2 surface were the dominant reactive sites responsible for the promotion of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycles and subsequently the PMS activation. Importantly, the electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the iron ions released from IO were prone to adsorb onto the WS 2 surface, forming active Fe species with high oxidative potential, which remarkably accelerated the electron transfer for Fe 2+ regeneration, thereby enhancing PMS activation to generate reactive oxygen species like hydroxyl radicals ( OH), sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ) and superoxide radicals (O 2 − ). Furthermore, the practicability of WS 2 /IO/PMS system was validated by treating various pollutants and investigating the interference of coexisting anions in water. Overall, this study provides a green and advanced strategy to enhance the PMS activation by natural iron ore for efficient water decontamination.

Electrocatalytic synergy from Ni-enhanced WS2 for alkaline overall water splitting with tuning electronic structure and crystal phase transformation

Chenyu Song,Jishuang Yang,Shuangting Ren,Shree Kesavan Kannan,Shanhu Liu,Ruimin Xing

Due to the limited active sites and poor conductivity, the application of tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) in alkaline water electrolysis remains a challenge. Herein, Ni-WS 2 nanosheet arrays were in situ grown on the carbon fiber paper (Ni-WS 2 /CFP) as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media, and the introduction degree of Ni can be regulated by adjusting the electrodeposition time. When the electrodeposition time is 3 min, Ni ions are doped into the lattice of WS 2 , and by prolonging the electrodeposition time to 10 min, the nickel disulfide (NiS 2 ) crystal phase is generated to form NiS 2 @WS 2 heterojunction. The optimized Ni-WS 2 /CFP-10 min catalyst requires the overpotentials of 65 mV for HER and 251 mV for OER to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . A two-electrode water electrolysis device employing the Ni-WS 2 /CFP-10 min electrocatalyst requires a cell voltage of 1.63 V at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . This work provides a new perspective for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of WS 2 -based electrocatalysts by introducing heteroatoms and constructing heterojunction.

Oxygen-supplementing mesoporous polydopamine nanosponges with WS2 QDs-embedded for CT/MSOT/MR imaging and thermoradiotherapy of hypoxic cancer

Yidan Wang,Shaoze Song,Tong Lu,Yu Cheng,Yilin Song,Siyu Wang,Fengping Tan,Jiao Li,Nan Li

Multifunctional nanoplatforms with flexible architectures and tumor microenvironment response are highly anticipated within the field of thermoradiotherapy. Herein, the multifunctional nanoplatforms for thermoradiotherapy have been successfully constructed by the embedding of tungsten disulfide quantum dots (WS 2 QDs) into mesoporous polydopamine nanosponges (MPDA NSs), followed by integration with manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). MPDA-WS 2 @MnO 2 , the resultant nanoplatforms, exhibit radiosensitization enhanced behavior and a capacity for responsive oxygen self-supplementation. The ingenious mesoporous structure of MPDA NSs serves as reservoir for the assembly of WS 2 QDs to form MPDA-WS 2 nanoparticles (NPs), in which WS 2 QDs provide the radiation enhancement effect, whereas the MPDA NSs framework endows the MPDA-WS 2 @MnO 2 with an excellent photothermal capability. Additionally, the integration of the MnO 2 component works to decompose the tumor-overexpressed H 2 O 2 and alleviate tumor hypoxia subsequently, which has been demonstrated to enhance radiotherapy performance considerably. Meanwhile, the prepared MPDA-WS 2 @MnO 2 nanoplatforms have been evaluated as trimodality contrast agents for computed tomography (CT), multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT), and tumor microenvironment-responsive T 1 -weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging that have the potential for real-time guidance and monitoring during cancer therapy. More importantly, when subjected to near infrared (NIR) laser irradiation and X-ray exposure, the tumor is found to be inhibited significantly through the process of combined thermoradiotherapy. The design concepts of embedding WS 2 QDs into MPDA NSs and oxygen self-supplementing hold great potential for multimodal imaging-guided thermoradiotherapy of hypoxic cancer.

A PCR-enhanced UCNPs-WS2 fluorescence biosensor via dual quenching-dual recovery mechanism for rapid detection of Salmonella typhimurium

Lu Han,Min Chen,Qian Huang,Weijie Lan,Chong Wang,Leiqing Pan,Kang Tu

Foodborne illnesses caused by Salmonella rank first among bacterial foodborne diseases, representing a significant risk to public health and food safety, which necessitates the development of rapid and sensitive detection technologies. This study developed an upconversion‑tungsten disulfide PCR fluorescence sensor based on a “dual quenching-dual recovery” mechanism for the detection of Salmonella typhimurium ( S. typhimurium ). By utilizing the dual properties of tungsten disulfide, which include peroxidase-like activity and high fluorescence quenching efficiency, the sensor establishes a quantitative correlation between the upconversion fluorescence signal and S. typhimurium concentration, following target-specific signal amplification via PCR. The constructed method demonstrated good specificity and repeatability, with a detection limit as low as 22.5 CFU/mL. Furthermore, by reducing the number of PCR cycles by approximately 12 (from 34 to 22), the detection time was shortened by about 24 min while achieving a detection limit comparable to that of qPCR. The sensor performed excellently in real food matrices (chicken, eggs, fish), showing spike recovery rates of 92.0%–106.3% and relative standard deviations below 10%. In summary, the upconversion fluorescence biosensing strategy integrated with PCR amplification presented in this study provides a highly sensitive, rapid, and reliable solution for the pathogen detection, significantly enhancing the capacity for prevention and control of foodborne diseases.

WS2 enhances the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle in MIL-101(Fe) to promote the activation of peroxymonosulfate for phenol degradation

Huiying Lei,Xuechang Ren,Ning Fu,Gongrong Chen,Yajun Wei,Zhongshan Li,Hongjin Chen,Zerui Lu

To address the low Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ redox cycling efficiency of Fe-based catalysts during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, this study successfully constructed a MIL-101(Fe)/WS 2 composite catalytic material. The results show that the MW 1:1 composite exhibits excellent performance toward PMS activation. By leveraging the cooperative effect of dual-metal cycling between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and W 4+ /W 6+ , as well as unsaturated sulfur vacancies, it achieves 97% phenol degradation within 60 min, with a reaction constant of 0.1038 min −1 , which is approximately 110 times that of single MIL-101(Fe) and WS 2 . The effects of key operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH value and coexisting anions on phenol degradation efficiency were systematically evaluated. Through in-depth radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy analysis, it was clearly identified that sulfate radical ( SO 4 ∙ − SO4∙− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) were the main active oxide species driving the degradation reaction. Furthermore, this study further elucidated the degradation means of phenol, proclaimed the reaction mechanisation, and evaluated the ecological toxicity of phenol and its intermediate products using the ECOSAR model. This work provides new insights for constructing efficient iron-based catalysts to activate PMS and promoting its application in the control of refractory organic pollutants.

A piezoelectric micro-pyramid array sensor based on PVDF/WS2 nanosheets for high-precision deep learning-assisted pattern recognition

Xinwen Zhou,Haoran Pei,Zhicheng Li,Haihao He,Yinghong Chen

The piezoelectric pressure sensors, which have emerged as core components of intelligent sensing systems, exhibit significant application values in flexible electronics and human-machine interaction. In this study, we innovatively developed a micro-pyramid array sensor (MPAS) based on PVDF/WS 2 nanosheets (NSs) nanocomposites. The PVDF/WS 2 NSs nanocomposites were prepared by using the solid-state shear milling (S 3 M) technology and then elaborately integrated into a precisely designed micro-pyramidal architecture through microinjection molding (μIM) strategy. Under the very strong shear stress fields of μIM process, the spontaneous alignment of PVDF molecular chains and WS 2 NSs along the flow direction has been achieved. The fabricated sensing microdevices exhibit high sensitivity (128 mV/kPa) within a 10 N pressure range, along with 1 mm spatial resolution comparable to the level of human tactile perception. Furthermore, based on fabrication of the above microdevice, we also established an intelligent recognition system through combining multi-stage signal processing algorithms with a convolutional neural network (CNN). The resulting MPAS could achieve 100 % classification accuracy for three English letters. By setting an intensity threshold for the sensor arrays, the constructed recognition system could achieve 2 37 (≈1.37 × 10 11 ) password combinations, which is equivalent to the security level of an 11-digit decimal password lock system. Such an interesting and smart approach has demonstrated a unique security authentication methodology for intelligent electronic devices, and exhibits the promising application prospects in artificial intelligence-based precision recognition systems and advanced human-machine interaction interfaces.

Label-free plasmonic-based biosensing using a gold nanohole array chip coated with a wafer-scale deposited WS2 monolayer

Lixing Kang,Yan Zhang,Qian Gong,Chandreyee Manas Das,Huilin Shao,Daniel Puiu Poenar,Philippe Coquet,Ken-Tye Yong

This paper reports the fabrication, testing and obtained performance of a plasmonic sensor employing a gold (Au) nanohole array chip coated with tungsten disulphide (WS2), which is then functionalized for the detection of protein–protein interactions. A key novelty is that the WS2 was deposited as a monoatomic layer using a wafer-scale synthesis method that successfully provided a film of both high quality and uniform thickness. The deposited WS2 film was transferred onto a Au nanohole array chip using a novel method and was subsequently functionalized with biotin. The final sensor was tested and it demonstrated efficient real-time and label-free plasmonic detection of biotin–streptavidin coupling. Specifically, compared to a standard (i.e. uncoated) Au nanohole-based sensor, our WS2-coated Au nanohole array boosted the spectral shift of the resonance wavelength by ∼190%, resulting in a 7.64-fold improvement of the limit of detection (LOD).

Tribological properties and releasing behavior of solid lubricant WS2 in the dimples on cylinder liner surface of diesel engine

Jingguo Fu,Changqi Xu,Dengqing Ma,Xinhe Zhu,Dong Cheng,Zhijun Yan,Chunsheng Ma,Gengshuo Liu,Yunyang Fu

Modified WS 2 by silane coupling agent were encapsulated in the dimples fabricated on the surface of cylinder liner samples by hot-pressing method. The tribological properties, anti-adhesion performance of the samples as well as the releasing behavior of modified WS 2 in the dimples were tested by a reciprocating tribotester. Moreover, the anti-erosion performance of modified WS 2 was examined by ultrasonic vibration test. The results indicate that the composite lubrication structure has good anti-friction and anti-adhesion effects. Furthermore, the release rate of WS 2 in the dimples is decreased by 102.2% due to the introduction of silane coupling agent . Additionally, the synergistic effect among the dimples, the solid lubricant and the silane coupling agent can explain the anti-friction and sustained release mechanisms.
