Bifunctional hybrid nanocomposites based on upconversion luminescence and photothermal properties have a wide range of application, especially biomedical diagnosis and therapy. Herein, the hybrid nanocomposites were prepared via combining NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+/Ho3+ nanocrystals as shell layer materials and Au nanoparticles as the cores. The as-prepared nanocomposites can simultaneously take advantage of both the upconversion luminescence of NaYF4:Yb3+,Er3+/Ho3+ nanocrystals and the photothermal transduction property of Au nanoparticles. The structure, morphology and composition of the nanocomposites were confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). In addition, the upconversion luminescence and photothermal transduction were evaluated. We observed an overlap between the absorption band of Au nanoparticles and the upconversion emission peaks of the Er3+/Ho3+ ions, and the luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) was studied and demonstrated. Under 980 nm laser irradiation, upconversion luminescence and efficient photothermal transduction of the hybrid nanocomposites were found. Moreover, the bifunctional nanocomposites also have shown excellent biocompatibility.

A new strategy to improve the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells by using the external near-infrared light harvesting and light-scattering dual-functional upconversion (UC) material NaLuF4:Yb3+/Er3+ is proposed. The photoluminescence spectra of NaLuF4:Yb3+/Er3+ showed the emission of green and red light, and these luminescence bands coincided well with the absorption wavelength of N719 dye. A small amount of UC material could serve as a good scattering material in photoelectrodes. The photoelectric conversion efficiency reaches 7.58% at a concentration of 5 wt% of UC (weight ratio of UC to TiO2), which is 27.18% higher than that of P25 photoanode (5.96%) with similar thickness. This finding may be attributed to the UC luminescence and light scattering properties of the UC material.

Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ ,Eu 3+ triply-doped in YVO 4 with varying molar ratio of Er/Eu were synthesized in a sol–gel method with a subsequent heat treatment for the first time. The optimal molar ratio of Er/Eu for the maximum energy transfer efficiency was 1/39. After molar ratio, the influences of different heat treatment temperatures were also researched and the maximal heat temperature was 1300 °C. Besides, the properties of YVO 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ ,Eu 3+ upconversion phosphors were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and photo luminescent spectra, respectively. In sum, XRD results indicate the crystal structure of as-prepared samples, which is the tetragonal phase of YVO 4 with no other diffraction peaks. SEM images show the morphology of as-prepared samples, which are granular-like nanoparticles. PL spectra demonstrate the upconversion luminescence of as-prepared samples, which emit strong green lights (at 525 nm, 550 nm) and slight red lights (at 590 nm, 615 nm, 695 nm) under the NIR irradiation at 980 nm. Two strong green emissions are attributed to the 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 and 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 transitions of Er 3+ ions. Meanwhile, three slight red emissions are attributed to the 5 D 0 → 7 F 1 , 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 and 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 transitions of Eu 3+ ions. All in all, the colorful emissions endow YVO 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ ,Eu 3+ phosphors great potential for some applications, such as display devices, bio-labeling and infrared detection.

A simple and rapid grinding method for preparing Er 3+ -doped and Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 upconversion phosphors was developed. We avoid to employ strong acids as reaction solvents, aligning with the principles of green chemistry. By controlling the thermal treatment temperature and adding BiCl 3 , a reversible phase transformation process between Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 and Cs 3 BiCl 6 perovskite phosphors was achieved. The Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 phosphors emit green light under 980 nm excitation, whereas Cs 3 BiCl 6 phosphors emit red light. Their temperature sensing performance was tested through variable-temperature processes. Compared to Er 3+ -doped Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 phosphors, the co-doped Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors have a higher relative sensitivity of 1.60 % K −1 . Compared to previously reported materials, Cs 3 Bi 2 Cl 9 phosphors show enhanced sensitivity in temperature sensing. The study demonstrates that lead-free halide perovskites’ unique color-tunability not only underscores the innovativeness of this synthetic strategy but also provides a significant technological foundation for temperature sensing applications. Given their environmental friendliness and facile preparation process, these phosphors possess notable advantages for industrial production and hold promise as potential candidates for next-generation high-performance phosphor materials.

Impurity doping has a significant influence on the nucleation and growth of nanocrystals. The influence of the ionic radius of the dopant and grain size on the crystallographic phase of KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals has not been systematically investigated. Herein, we demonstrate an M ion (M = Mn2+, Gd3+, Nd3+) doping approach to dynamically fine-tune the grain size of KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals, and study the influence of the ionic radius of the doping M ions and particle size reduction on the crystallographic phase. Through a comprehensive investigation of the impurity doping induced phase transition phenomenon and the growth mechanism of KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ nanocrystals, we speculated that the impurity doping induced phase transition mechanism of KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ mainly depends on the grain size of nanocrystals ignoring the ionic radius of the dopant. With the decrease of the grain size, high surface tension triggers phase transformation from anisotropic (orthorhombic KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+) to isotropic (cubic KLu3F10:Yb3+/Er3+). What is more, we have systematically investigated the visible (VIS)-upconversion and near infrared (NIR)-downshifting emission of various-sized KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNPs and Mn2+, Gd3+ or Nd3+ ion doped KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNPs. The findings provide keen insights into understanding the effect of size reduction on the phase transition mechanism and the photoluminescence properties of KLu2F7:Yb3+/Er3+ UCNPs, while offering the possibility for good academic studies and application prospects.

The co-doping effect of Zr 4+ ions on upconversion (UC) luminescent properties in visible region of Y 2 O 3 : Er 3+ and Y 2 O 3 : Er 3+ , Yb 3+ sub-microcrystals prepared by urea precipitation method has been investigated under 980 nm excitation. Compared with the original Y 2 O 3 : Er 3+ and Y 2 O 3 : Er 3+ , Yb 3+ sub-microcrystals, the UC luminescence of sub-microcrystals with similar size was enhanced after Zr 4+ ions co-doping. The UC luminescent properties have been discussed in detail via luminescence spectra, decay curve analysis and a suitable energy level diagram. The enhancement mechanism of UC luminescence in the two series of Zr 4+ ions doped sub-microcrystals was attributed to the complex crystal field around Er 3+ ions caused by Zr 4+ ions co-doping. After Zr 4+ ions substituted Y 3+ ions and entered the crystal lattice, the charge mismatch and lattice distortion made the crystal field more complex. This research contributes to the understanding of UC luminescent properties of lanthanide (Ln 3+ ) ions doped UC materials and their technological applications in fields such as bioimaging, drug delivery, and optical temperature sensors.

In the domain of photocatalysis, harnessing solar energy, particularly the near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, presents formidable challenges. To overcome these, a novel NIR-responsive photocatalyst, denoted as NYT@ZnO@RGO@Ag, was meticulously crafted. This photocatalyst comprises a NaYF4: Yb3+, Tm3+@ZnO structure supported on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and further composited with silver nanoparticles. It was rigorously evaluated for its performance in photodegrading tetracycline (TC) antibiotics as a model compound. Leveraging the unique properties of upconversion materials, wide bandgap semiconductors, and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), the NYT@ZnO@RGO@Ag catalyst exhibited an impressive photodegradation rate of 93.6% for TC under NIR light exposure. This efficiency surpassed that of NYT@ZnO (38.2%) and NYT@ZnO@RGO (72.3%). The remarkable enhancement in NIR-driven photocatalysis observed in NYT@ZnO@RGO@Ag is primarily attributed to the efficient process of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from NYT to its each component. This process enhances photo-induced carrier generation and facilitates efficient transfer and energy utilization under NIR irradiation. The present study offers a promising approach for NIR-driven photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in environments with limited light exposure or even under dark conditions.

Excitation wavelength controllable lanthanide upconversion allows for real-time manipulation of luminescent color in a composition-fixed material, which has been proven to be conducive to a variety of applications, such as optical anti-counterfeiting and information security. However, current available materials highly rely on the elaborate core–shell structure in order to ensure efficient excitation-dependent energy transfer routes. Herein, multicolor upconversion luminescence in response to both near-infrared I and near-infrared II (NIR-I and NIR-II) excitations is realized in a novel but simple NaYGeO4:Yb3+/Er3+phosphor. The remarkably enhanced red emission ratio under 1532 nm excitation, compared with that under 980 nm excitation, could be attributed to the Yb3+-mediated cross-relaxation energy transfers. Moreover, multi-wavelength excitable temperature-dependent (295–823 K) upconversion luminescence realizes a ratiometric thermometry relying on the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) of Er3+. Detailed investigations demonstrate that changing excitation wavelength makes little difference for the performances of TCL-based ratiometric thermometry of NaYGeO4:Yb3+/Er3+. These findings gain more insights to manipulate cross-relaxations for excitation controllable upconversion in single activator doped materials and benefit the cognition of the effect of excitation wavelength on ratiometric luminescence thermometry.

The near-infrared-II (NIR-II) fluorescence thermometer based on rare earth-doped double perovskite is rarely. Herein, Er 3+ -Ho 3+ and Yb 3+ co-doped lead-free double perovskite La 2 MgTiO 6 (LMTO) phosphors were synthesized by a conventional high temperature solid phase method. The phase purity and morphology of the samples were analyzed using XRD and FE-SEM. The NIR-II luminescence properties of LMTO: Er 3+ -Ho 3+ -Yb 3+ phosphors were systematically investigated under laser irradiation at 980 nm. A NIR-II fluorescence thermometer was also designed based on non-thermal coupled energy levels originated from the 4 I 13/2 energy level of Er 3+ and the 5 I 6 energy level of Ho 3+ . The maximum value of relative sensitivity (S r ) was 0.54 % at 513 K. Compared to visible thermometers (LMTO: Er 3+ -Yb 3+ and LMTO: Ho 3+ -Yb 3+ ), the NIR-II thermometers offer better temperature measurement capability and penetration depth. All the experimental results show that the NIR-II thermometer with a wider range and higher sensitivity has been realized, which puts forward a new idea for the design and optimization of NIR-II thermometers.

Yb 3+ /Er 3+ activated upconversion (UC) materials have been widely applied in many advanced technologies owing to their high UC efficiency in the visible region. However, it is challenging to achieve efficient ultraviolet (UV) UC luminescence (UCL) in Yb 3+ /Er 3+ system, due to the dense energy levels of Er 3+ that impose deleterious nonradiative relaxation. Herein, we report a strategy to liberate the UV-UCL of Er 3+ based on the confined energy transfer in Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped 0D Rb 3 InCl 6 with a low phonon energy and a large interionic distance. This facilitates the population of Er 3+ at the 4 G 11/2 state, which yields intense upconverted UV emission at 384 nm, with a much higher UV-to-green ratio ( I 384 / I 554 = 0.864) than that of traditional UC materials ( < 0.1). By leveraging the intense upconverted UV emission of Er 3+ , we demonstrate the application of Rb 3 InCl 6 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanocrystals as a NIR-to-UV transducer for NIR-triggered anion exchange of CsPbX 3 perovskite nanocrystals with high efficiency and good controllability. These findings offer an approach for the exploration of novel UC materials via energy transfer and crystal lattice engineering towards versatile applications.

Rare-earth (RE) doped aluminum nitride (AlN) holds great promise for integrated optoelectronic devices. Here, the Ho and Yb co-doped AlN (AlN:Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ ) submicron towers were prepared by a direct nitridation route. XRD, Raman, XPS and EDS studies showed successful doping of Ho and Yb ions into AlN. SEM images show that the submicron towers have an interesting layered structure by layer-by-layer stacking of hexagonal AlN nanosheets. Under excitation at 980 nm, AlN:Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ submicron towers exhibit up-conversion (UC) luminescence at 540, 550, 659, and 762 nm, which are due to Ho 3+ /Yb 3+ system from 5 F 4 , 5 S 2 → 5 I 8 , 5 F 5 → 5 I 8 , and 5 F 4 , 5 S 2 → 5 I 7 respectively. Based on the intensity ratio and decay lifetime of UC luminescence, the optical temperature sensing characteristics are investigated from 298 K to 548 K. The maximum relative sensitivities associated with the intensity ratio of I 540, 550 and I 659 and decay lifetime of 659 nm are as high as 2.73% K −1 and 0.43% K −1 , respectively. This work broadens the optoelectronic properties of RE doped AlN.

Lanthanide ion-doped metal halides are a promising class of fluorescent materials. In this paper, we investigated the optical properties and photophysical mechanism of Er3+, Yb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 phosphor. It was demonstrated that in both up-conversion (UC) and down-shifting emission modes, the increase of Yb3+ concentration resulted in enhancement of the 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 emission of Er3+ in Cs2NaScCl6. In particular, UC emission gradually shifts from green to yellow with the enhancement of the excitation power density observed in Yb3+-rich systems. The complex cross-relaxation behavior between Yb3+ and Er3+ results in these phenomena. New paradigms are provided for the development of multimodal and dynamic fluorescent anticounterfeiting materials.
