Food spoilage caused by microbial contamination remains a global challenge, driving demand for sustainable antibacterial packaging. Conventional photocatalytic materials suffer from limited spectral response, rapid charge recombination, and insufficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation under visible light. Here, a Z-scheme heterojunction was constructed by coupling zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with Ag 3 PO 4 , achieving dual-spectral absorption and spatial charge separation. The directional electron transfer from Ag 3 PO 4 ’s conduction band to ZIF-8 effectively suppresses electron-hole recombination, prolonging carrier lifetimes and amplifying ROS production (·O 2 − /·OH). Synergy with Ag + release further enhances bactericidal efficacy. Incorporated into a cellulose acetate matrix (CAM), the ZIF-8/Ag 3 PO 4 /CAM film demonstrates 99.06% antibacterial efficiency against meat surface microbiota under simulated sunlight, alongside high transparency. This study proposes a Z-scheme heterojunction strategy to maximize ROS generation efficiency and demonstrates a scalable fabrication approach for active food packaging materials, effectively targeting microbial contamination control and shelf-life prolongation.

In this work, direct Z-scheme BiOBr/CuI heterojunctions are successfully synthesized using a simple solvothermal method for the first time. The photocatalytic activity of the BiOBr/CuI composite catalysts is evaluated by the degradation of phenol under visible light. The photocatalytic performance of all the composites is higher than that of the pure components. BiOBr/CuI-1 : 0.8 shows the best photocatalytic performance, which could remove 98.4% phenol in 150 minutes, almost 4.35 and 8.63 times as high as that of pure BiOBr and CuI, respectively. Assisted by XPS, the charge transfer of the composites is investigated. The good photocatalytic performance of the composites is attributed to the Z-scheme charge transfer between BiOBr and CuI. Moreover, the main active species in this system are proved by free radical quenching experiments and EPR, and a possible degradation mechanism is proposed. The degradation products of phenol are analyzed by HPLC-MS and the possible degradation paths are proposed.

Rational design of photoelectrode with high visible light utilization rate and separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs is the key step in photoelectrocatalytic technology. In this work, Z-Scheme photoelectrocatalyst (ZTO/rGO/Ag/AgBr) was synthesized by hydrothermal and photo-reduction process. Comparing with pure Zn 2 SnO 4 (ZTO), adding reduced graphene oxide (rGO) effectively improved electrons transfer efficiency. Notably, the addition of Ag/AgBr not only broaden the visible light response range of ZTO, but also accelerated the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, and constructed all-solid-state Z-Scheme heterojunction . Meanwhile, DFT calculation showed that Ag metal on rGO surface could act as active site for organic dyes degradation . Moreover, the addition of extra bias potential during photoelectrochemical process not only accelerate the migration of carriers, but also inhibit the recombination of photo-generated electron-hole pairs. Methylene blue (MB) could be effectively removed during photoelectrochemical reaction process, which was attributed to hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (•O 2 - ). In this work, Z-Scheme transfer pathway, assisted photoelectrocatalytic technology, is a feasible strategy for improving catalytic performance.

The decahedral morphology of BiVO 4 and ZnCr-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) nanosheets enables the construction of a BiVO 4 @LDHs Z -scheme heterojunction (BiVO 4 as core and LDHs as a shell) for photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin, typical antibiotic. The effects of initial concentration of norfloxacin, catalyst loading, reaction temperature, and pH value on the performance of photodegradation were studied. It was found that the removal of norfloxacin can reach 90.3% under the optimized conditions. The core-shell structure enhances the specific surface area, improves the energetic alignment of the band structures, and produces enough hydroxyl and superoxide radicals to degrade norfloxacin. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that a built-in electric field is formed between ZnCr-LDHs and BiVO 4 , which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the valence band of ZnCr–LDHs to the conduction band of BiVO 4 . This transfer accelerates the flow of photogenerated electrons and reduces the recombination of electron-hole pairs, so that BiVO 4 @LDHs heterojunction shows excellent photocatalytic activity for norfloxacin.

CsPbBr 3 perovskite exhibits potential application in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into valuable chemical fuels; however, enhancing carrier separation capability of the CsPbBr 3 and fully understanding the CO 2 reduction reaction process are still imperative. Herein, a new series of x SnS 2 /CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs)- y heterostructures are developed, which exhibit better catalytic activity in comparison with pure CsPbBr 3 NCs. Interface and surface carrier dynamic investigation reveals that this heterojunction structure can effectively improve carrier separation efficiency. Based on the interfacial electric field direction of CsPbBr 3 to SnS 2 , it is suggested that SnS 2 /CsPbBr 3 NC heterostructure satisfies Z-scheme transfer dynamics. Meanwhile, by the aid of in situ surface photovoltage, it is experimentally confirmed there is dynamic carrier interaction between CO 2 molecules and the SnS 2 /CsPbBr 3 NCs photocatalyst under irradiation, and a photocatalytic CO 2 reduction mechanism is thus proposed. This work expands the awareness of the interaction between CO 2 and the photocatalyst, which can be strongly influenced by carrier separation efficiency at the photocatalyst heterojunction.

The g-C3N4/Y-TiO2 Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts were successfully synthesized. Powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used for characterization. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared samples was investigated via the degradation efficiency of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation, and 20 mg L−1 RhB was completely degraded in 90 min. The results showed that the photocatalytic degradation of RhB conformed to pseudo-first-order kinetic fitting, and the kinetic constants of g-C3N4/Y-TiO2 were 4.27 times higher than those of g-C3N4/TiO2 and 14.18 times higher than those of Y-TiO2, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4/Y-TiO2 was due to the formation of a Z-scheme heterojunction by Y at the g-C3N4/TiO2 interface. Formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction resulted in the suppression of photo-generated electron–hole pair recombination and the increase of their lifetimes, which was demonstrated by the transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the time-resolved photoluminescence spectra. The superoxide radical and photo-generated holes played a dominant role in the photocatalytic degradation process of RhB by g-C3N4/Y-TiO2.

To make full use of solar energy and achieve effective separation of photogenerated carriers, semiconductor heterojunction engineering is becoming increasingly significant nowadays. Herein, Cs x WO 3 /CsPbBr 3 heterojunctions via cosharing the Cs atom are synthesized by a facile acid solution method, which involves the in situ growth of CsPbBr 3 nanoparticles on the surface of Cs x WO 3 nanorods. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests confirm that a high-quality interface with strong interaction between Cs x WO 3 and CsPbBr 3 is constructed successfully. Thus, a direct Z-scheme charge transfer pathway is built in such close-contact heterojunctions, which can not only effectively prevent the recombination of photogenerated carriers, but also preserve the carriers with higher redox abilities, as confirmed by electron spin resonance (ESR) as well as Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). As a proof of concept, the photocatalytic hydrogen production performance of Cs x WO 3 /CsPbBr 3 is evaluated in ethyl acetate, and a 17-fold enhancement in hydrogen production rate as compared with pristine Cs x WO 3 is obtained, verifying the effective charge separation in such heterojunctions. Herein, a new idea for in situ synthesis of high-quality perovskite-based heterojunctions is provided, which will broaden their optoelectrical applications.

Heterojunction photocatalysts with intimate contact are very promising for organics photodegradation due to their high efficiency in enhancing the light absorption, inhibiting the carrier recombination and improving the photogenerated electron/hole separation. In this study, we demonstrated a two-step hydrothermal method to construct indium sulfide/bismuth oxybromide (In 2 S 3 /BiOBr) heterojunctions for the first time. Importantly, the optoelectronic dynamics of carrier separation efficiency, charge transport and electron/hole recombination rate were tuned to an optimal domain through a series of experiments. As a result, the photocatalytic activity of In 2 S 3 /BiOBr heterojunctions was greatly enhanced under visible-light irradiation. The as-synthesized IS/BOB-0.2 heterojunctions exhibited the highest photocatalytic ability, which was approximately 4.75 times and 11.26 times higher than that of pure BiOBr and TiO 2 P25 catalysts. This work will provide a better insight into the formation mechanism BiOBr-based Z-scheme heterojunctions with high photocatalytic performance.

The contact quality of a composite is an important factor for the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers. For this, we demonstrated a cation exchange method for the in situ construction of WO3/PbWO4 linked by WO6 octahedral crystal structure units, where WO3 was placed on the surface of PbWO4. We found that the apparent rate constant of the as-prepared WO3/PbWO4 was significantly increased (17 times higher than any single one). Our investigation indicated a remarkably enhanced photodegradation rate, originating from high contact quality. The photogenerated carriers of WO3/PbWO4 were greatly separated via the grain boundary, making WO3/PbWO4 exhibit 22 times higher photocurrent density than pristine PbWO4. Moreover, the photoelectrons and holes were separated through the high contact quality grain boundary built-in electric field, which is in accordance with the transmission path of the Z-scheme. Compared with the interface, a grain boundary is more conducive to the photocatalytic process. This study provides a feasible strategy to build a highly efficient Z-scheme photocatalyst with high contact quality grain boundary to remove organic pollutants.

The development of stable, efficient photocatalyst for environmental antibiotics degradation is great significant and remains a major challenge. Herein, zero dimensional Co 3 O 4 nanodots are grown in situ onto two dimensional TiO 2 nanosheets, successfully producing a Z-scheme heterojunction Co 3 O 4 /TiO 2 photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of enrofloxacin. The synthesized nanohybrid exhibits superior photodegradation performance (0.0269 min −1 for enrofloxacin) and excellent stability (four cycles). The matched energy bands allow the formation of the Z-scheme heterojunction, and the built-in electric field provides the reaction driving force. The formed Z-scheme heterojunction can simultaneously inhibit photoinduced electron-hole recombination, boost photoinduced charge carrier transfer, and produce more active electrons and holes, therefore generating more active species for eventual photocatalytic degradation. In addition, a the possible enrofloxacin degradation pathway was proposed based on simulated calculations and GC MS analysis. This work can inspire further design and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts.

Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation has attracted extensive attention in recent years. Studies have shown that catalytic materials with O, N and other defects can effectively reduce the bond energy of NN triple bond when N2 is adsorbed on the defects. As an outstanding non-metallic catalyst, g-C3N4 has been widely studied in the field of photocatalytic catalysis, and the nitrogen-defected C3N4 shows promoted photocatalytic activity. Herein, nano-size MOF-74 particles (<20 nm) was dispersed on nitrogen-defected C3N4 thin film (∼4 nm) via a simple sol–gel method. The combination of Nano-MOF and defected film C3N4 could effectively improve the photocatalytic activity of nitrogen fixation through Z-scheme mechanism compared with pure defected film C3N4.

Photocatalytic degradation has been regarded as a promising method for environmental remediation. In this work, layered g-C 3 N 4 /(BiO) 2 (OH) x Cl 2− x (NBHC) heterojunction composites were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The two-dimensional (2D)/2D porous layered Z-scheme heterojunction leaded to the suppressed recombination and the efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Meanwhile, NBHC composites exhibited a high specific surface area and rich mesopores for more reactive active sites. Thus, NBHC had an excellent photocatalytic degradation performance of pollutant trypan blue (TB). Furthermore, we found that the active species of superoxide radical ( O 2 − ) played a more important role, while hydroxyl radical ( OH) contributed to a lesser extent in photocatalytic degradation of TB based on the active species capture experiment and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. A Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed to understand the photodegradation of TB. This study may provide a new horizon for constructing novel Z-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts with an excellent performance.
