A novel polyethylenimine (PEI)-salicylaldehyde (SA) fluorescence probe, simply prepared by stirring procedure, can sensitively detect Zn 2+ (25 nM) and Cd 2+ (10 nM) in aqueous solution. Formation of metal-to-ligand complexes (Zn 2+ @PEI-SA and Cd 2+ @PEI-SA) between ions and Schiff base generate a new emission at 454 nm, which increase with the concentration of the ions (turn-on). Furthermore, after adding S 2− into the complexes, we can distinguish them due to the fluorescence quenching for Cd 2+ @PEI-SA (turn-off). Both response times for turning on and off the fluorescence are less than 1 min.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the field of printing and packaging, have caused great harm to the environment. Therefore, the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a hot topic, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have been applied in this field. However, improving the removal efficiency of different VOCs by using the two kinds of materials is still a great challenge. Herein, ZIF-8 like materials of Zn-His-GQDs were prepared by assembling Zn 2+ and histidine functionalized GQDs (His-GQDs) in this work. The morphologies, structure and adsorption performances of Zn-His-GQDs were investigated. These results showed that mesoporous Zn-His-GQDs with a specific surface area of 63.3 m 2 ·g −1 had similar structure to ZIF-8. When the content of Zn-His-GQDs was 200 mg, the equilibrium adsorption capacity for toluene solution of 500 mg·L −1 and ethyl acetate solution of 1600 mg·L −1 was 350 mg·L −1 and 669.44 mg·L −1 , respectively. Due to channel filling, cation-π interaction, π-π interaction, hydrogen bond and high surface energy, Zn-His-GQDs exhibited a relative high removal efficiency for high concentration of toluene and ethyl acetate. The removal rate of Zn-His-GQDs on toluene and ethyl acetate after five cycles remained 59.80 % and 36.75 %, respectively. Moreover, this kind of MOFs like materials maintained stable structure during the adsorption in different pH solutions. Therefore, as-prepared Zn-His-GQDs with excellent adsorption performances for typical VOCs simulants in this work have potential application in the treatment of VOCs in the field of printing and packaging.

The proliferation of wearable electronic products has made the development of flexible energy storage devices increasingly important. Among various options, aqueous Zn metal batteries are promising due to their low cost, safety, non-toxicity, environmental friendliness, and abundant element storage. However, the growth of dendrites on the anode surface of Zn metal batteries is a significant challenge to efficient transport of Zn 2+ , which leads to reduced battery capacity or even failure. This limitation hinders practical applications for these batteries. This study develops a functionalized separator with high ion transport performance and excellent mechanical performances by electrostatic assembling deprotonated PPTA − molecular chains with Zn 2+ using Kevlar as a raw material. The successful assembly of Zn 2+ is confirmed through chemical composition and functional group analysis. The prepared separator significantly shows the increased the transfer number of Zn 2+ and decreased activation energy of Zn 2+ deposition. The separator is used in Zn||Zn symmetric batteries, achieving a reversible deposition/stripping process of more than 180 h at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 and a deposition capacity of 1 mAh·cm −2 . When applied to Zn||MnO 2 batteries, an initial discharging specific capacity of up to 220 mAh·g −1 is obtained at a high current density of 2 A g −1 , and the battery could be cycled stably for more than 1, 200 cycles, with a smooth and flat Zn anode surface and no obvious dendrite growth. The separator has good potential for flexible energy storage applications due to its excellent mechanical strength, which enables it to maintain high electrochemical activity even after bending 500 times at 180°. Overall, the functionalized separator effectively inhibits dendrite growth, improves the electrochemical stability of Zn metal batteries, and demonstrates significant application potential for other flexible energy storage applications.

It is confirmed that nano-ZnO (nZnO) has impact on environment and is considered as heavy metal pollutants. It is a new technology that applies coagulation process to simultaneous removal of the nanoparticles and heavy metals. Environmental chemical behavior of ZnO in water, such as the dispersion, aggregation, sedimentation, and dissolution of releasing metal ions, has been systematically studied in this paper. The result shows that three kinds of nZnO state such as compacted sediment, suspended, and released is separately 36.54 %, 40.61 %, and 22.86 %. Enteromorpha polysaccharide (Ep) was used together with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) in surface water purification. In order to study the mechanism of simultaneous removal of residual nZnO particles and Zn 2+ , coagulation process was further applied in this study. The evolution of flocs size, strength, and recovery ability and fractal structure due to Ep addition was systematically studied in this paper. Results indicated that PAC-Ep was efficient in removing nZnO and Zn 2+ , which leads to more than 95 % particles, 50–60 % natural organic matter (NOM) removed, and 35 % of resolved heavy metal ion adsorbing-chelation. Ep was an efficient coagulant aid in enhancing performance of coagulation and generating flocs with bigger sizes, faster growth rates, and higher recovery abilities. Additionally, the flocs formed by PAC-Ep presented a much looser structure than flocs formed only by PAC.

In this work, we report the design and application of a new ratiometric fluorescent probe, which contains different-colored quantum dots (QDs) as dual fluorophores, ultrathin silica shell as spacer, and meso-tetra(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphine dihydrochloride (TSPP) as receptor, for Zn2+ detection in aqueous solution and living cells. In the architecture of our designed probe, the silica shell plays the key roles in controlling the locations of QDs, TSPP, and Zn2+, preventing the direct contact between QDs and Zn2+ but affording fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from dual-color QDs to TSPP. In the presence of Zn2+, the analyte-receptor reaction changes the absorption in the range of the Q-band of TSPP and accordingly the efficiencies of two independent FRET processes from the dual-colored QDs to the acceptor, respectively, leading to fluorescence enhancement of green-emission QDs whereas fluorescence quenching of yellow-emission QDs. Benefiting from the well-resolved dual emissions from different-colored QDs and the large range of emission ratios, the probe solution displays continuous color changes from yellow to green, which can be clearly observed by the naked eye. Under physiological conditions, the probe exhibits a stable response for Zn2+ from 0.3 to 6 μM, with a detection limit of 60 nM in aqueous solutions. With respect to single-emission probes, this ratiometric probe has demonstrated to feature excellent selectivity for Zn2+ over other physiologically important cations such as Fe3+ and Cu2+. It has been preliminarily used for ratiometric imaging of Zn2+ in living cells with satisfying resolution.

Corrosion inhibitor additives are considered to be one of the effective methods to slow down the corrosion of metals, but the corrosion inhibitors will decompose and lose their effect in a long-term corrosive environment. In this work, a smart corrosion inhibitor carrier 2-mercaptobenzimidazole-Zn2+-polydopamine@graphite (MZPG) with excellent pH response was designed and synthesized using a one-pot method. This corrosion inhibitor carrier not only has a very high 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) loading capacity (38.0%) but also maintains a very low MBI activity to inhibit the decomposition of MZPG in the environment as much as possible. The MZPG/epoxy (MZPG/EP) coatings prepared by the spraying method showed excellent mechanical properties. Electrochemical and salt spray tests showed that the MZPG/EP coatings (1.20 × 1010 Ω·cm2) have excellent corrosion resistance with Rp values up to 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the EP coating (1.25 × 107 Ω·cm2). Notably, the MZPG/EP coatings maintained good corrosion resistance under acidic conditions due to the pH-responsive release of corrosion inhibitors. This is of great significance for the future development of coatings for highly corrosive environments.

Dielectric capacitors with high power density, cost-effectiveness, and harsh environmental working abilities have gained considerable research attention. Dielectric materials are key components of dielectric capacitors and directly influence their operational performance. Among others, high-entropy perovskites are emerging as attractive candidates for energy storage materials owing to their exceptional performance driven by the high-entropy effect. Here, a high-entropy (1- x )(Bi 0.4 Na 0.2 K 0.2 Ba 0.2 )TiO 3 - x Bi(Zn 2/3 Ta 1/3 )O 3 system for energy storage devices was designed. A systematic study was conducted to investigate the ferroelectric and dielectric properties of BNKBT-BZT high-entropy ceramics (HECs). The resultant sample exhibits strong relaxor properties and exceptional energy storage properties, with a high recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) of 4.11 J/cm³ and an energy storage efficiency ( η ) of 84 % under an electric field of 260 kV/cm. More interestingly, the BNKBT-15BZT HECs also display outstanding thermal and frequency stability. These findings suggest that the resultant BNKBT-15BZT HECs are highly promising for applications in dielectric energy storage within low-to-moderate electric field ranges.

Zn anode experiences dendrite issues in aqueous Zn batteries. They result from uneven Zn 2+ flux and Sand behavior depending on the current density. Herein, the amino alcohol of 2,2′,2′′-nitrilotriethanol (NTE) additive with chelation ability is introduced to achieve stable and parallel Zn deposition. NTE preferentially adsorbs on Zn surface, which chelates with Zn 2+ at interface upon geometry transformation. It not only homogenizes Zn 2+ flux to inhibit dendrites at low current densities, but also supply sufficient Zn 2+ to delay Sand behavior at high current densities. Parallel growth of Zn hexagonal plates is realized. Thus, Zn plating/stripping in symmetric cells at 10 mA cm −2 reaches >1600 h cycle life with the addition of 2.5% NTE in the ZnSO 4 electrolyte, corresponding to a high cumulative plated capacity of 8.5 Ah cm −2 . At the conditions of 5 °C or 70% depth of discharge, the lifespans of symmetric cells also extend to 6977 h and 230 h, respectively. In anode free full cells, a Zn 2+ pre-inserted V 6 O 13 ·H 2 O cathode retains 250 mAh g −1 capacity after 300 cycles at 6 A g −1 , superior to 83 mAh g −1 with NTE free electrolyte.

Artificial graft serves as the primary grafts used in the clinical management of sports-related injuries . Until now, optimizing its graft-host integration remains a great challenge due to the excessive inflammatory response during the inflammatory phase, coupled with an absence of tissue-inductive capacity during the regeneration phase. Here, a multi-layered regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) coating loaded with curcumin (Cur) and Zn 2+ on the surface of the PET grafts (Cur@Zn 2+ @PET) was designed and fabricated for providing time-matched regulation specifically tailored to address issues arising at both inflammatory and regeneration phases, respectively. The release of Cur and Zn 2+ from the Cur@Zn 2+ @PET followed a time-programmed pattern in vitro. Specifically, cellular assays revealed that Cur@Zn 2+ @PET initially released Cur during the inflammatory phase, thereby markedly inhibit the expression of inflammatory cytokines TNF-a and IL-1β. Meanwhile, a significant release of Zn 2+ was major part during the regeneration phase, serving to induce the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSC. Furthermore, rat model of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) showed that through time-programmed drug release, Cur@Zn 2+ @PET could suppress the formation of fibrous interface (FI) caused by inflammatory response, combined with significant new bone (NB) formation during regeneration phase. Consequently, the implementation of the Cur@Zn 2+ @PET characterized by its time-programmed release patterns hold considerable promise for improving graft-host integration for sports-related injuries.

Hydroponic experiments and computational simulations were conducted to investigate the changes in the gene expression, structure, and binding mode of the rice transporter protein OsTIL to OPEs by the presence of Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ . OPEs and Zn 2+ were observed to promote seedling growth and OPEs alleviated the suppressive effect of Cd 2+ on seedlings. Usually, Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ inhibited the accumulations of OPEs in plants accompanied by the decrease of RCF (root concentration factor) and TF (transport coefficient). In particular, Zn 2+ promoted TDCPP accumulation only in roots accompanied by the increase of RCF and the decrease of TF. Furthermore, Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ affected the gene expressions of OPEs transporter-OsTIL response in the accumulation of OPEs in both single and compound pollution. After molecular dynamics simulation analysis, RMSD of the protein backbone, binding pocket, and ligand only in TDCPP-OsTIL complex also were significantly affected by two metal ions. Furthermore, two metal ions can press the interaction of OPEs and OsTIL by reducing the stability of protein structure and the numbers of HB (hydrogen bonds) and enlarging the pocket. However, Zn 2+ extra supports an enlarged entrance for TDCPP, which could facilitate the entry of the coordination complex of Zn 2+ with TDCPP into the pocket and improve TDCPP capacity of OsTIL.

The K-CP/MnO 2 composite was prepared by loading manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) nanosheets onto potassium hydroxide (KOH) activated carbonized polyaniline (K-CP) via low-temperature hydrothermal reaction. The composite demonstrated high efficiency in removing Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ in the hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) technology. K-CP/MnO 2 presents a core-shell structure with conductive K-CP as the core and electrochemically active MnO 2 constructed by porous nanosheets as the shell. The disordered entanglement of K-CP and MnO 2 nanoflakes significantly increases the interlayer spacing, optimizes the pore distribution, creates favorable conditions for charge and ion transport, and realizes the synergistic effect of electric double layer (EDL) adsorption and Faradaic reactions. The specific capacitance (SC) of K-CP/MnO 2 at 5 mV s −1 is 112.03 F g −1 , which is nearly 3.76 times that of CP (29.82 F g −1 ). At a voltage of 1.2 V (100 mg L −1 ), the electrosorption capacity (SAC) of the K-CP/MnO 2 electrode for Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ is 124.66 and 96.86 mg g −1 , respectively. After 15 adsorption/desorption cycles in the HCDI device, the adsorption capacity for Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ is retained at 86.81% and 82.59%, respectively. The experiments indicate that the removal of Pb 2+ primarily occurs through electrosorption, redox reactions, and surface complexation, while Zn 2+ is inserted into the channel provided by MnO 2 and participates in the solid phase reaction. The K-CP/MnO 2 composite prepared in this study offers a novel approach for designing high-performance HCDI electrodes and achieving the selective removal of heavy metals.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are promising for their inherent safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, their performance is limited by dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution, and interfacial instability from uncontrolled Zn2+ deposition. Although graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been explored as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI), its limited active sites and sluggish Zn2+ transport restrict long-term stability. More importantly, the roles of different doping types in regulating interfacial Zn2+ behavior remain unclear. Herein, anion (O) and cation (K) are doped into g-C3N4 to construct model ASEI layers for elucidating their respective roles in interfacial regulation. Combined experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that cation doping (KCN) decreases Zn2+ diffusion barrier, thereby facilitating Zn2+ transport across the interphase. In contrast, anion doping (OCN) induces strong electrostatic interaction and enhances Zn2+ adsorption affinity, leading to improved zincophilicity and synergistically ion transport. These distinct interfacial interactions result in markedly different Zn deposition behaviors, where anion doping enables more uniform nucleation and suppressed dendrite growth. Consequently, the OCN@Zn anode exhibits enhanced cycling stability. This work clarifies the roles of anion and cation doping in regulating interfacial Zn2+ deposition from the perspectives of ion transport and interfacial nucleation, and provides mechanistic insights and design guidelines for constructing high-efficiency ASEI layers via heteroatom engineering.
