Impact of biosolids, ZnO, ZnO/biosolids on bacterial community and enantioselective transformation of racemic–quizalofop–ethyl in agricultural soil

Qing Zhou,Xu Zhang

The effects of biosolids , ZnO, and ZnO/biosolids on soil microorganism and the environmental fate of coexisting racemic–quizalofop–ethyl ( rac -QE) were investigated. Microbial biomass carbon in native soil, soil/biosolids decreased by 62% and 52% in the presence of ZnO (2‰, weight ratio). The soil bacterial community structure differed significantly among native soil, soil/biosolids, soil/ZnO, and soil/biosolids/ZnO based on a principal co-ordinate analysis (PCoA) of OTUs and one-way ANOVA test of bacterial genera. Chemical transformation caused by ZnO only contributed 4% and 3% of the overall transformation of R-quizalofop-ethyl (R-QE) and S-quizalofop-ethyl (S-QE) in soil/ZnO. The inhibition effect of ZnO on the initial transformation rate of R-QE ( r R-QE ) and S-QE ( r R-QE ) in soil only observed when enantiomer concentration was larger than 10 mg/kg. Biosolids embedded with ZnO (biosolids/ZnO) caused a 17%–42% and 22%–38% decrease of r R-QE and r S-QE , although r R-QE and r S-QE increased by 0%–17% and 22%–58% by the addition of biosolids. The results also demonstrated that the effects of biosolids on agricultural soil microorganism and enantioselective transformation of chiral pesticide was altered by the embedded nanoparticles .

Cu@ZIF-8 derived inverse ZnO/Cu catalyst with sub-5 nm ZnO for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Bing Hu,Yazhi Yin,Zixin Zhong,Dengdeng Wu,Guoliang Liu,Xinlin Hong

Maximizing the Cu–ZnO interface is regarded as the best strategy to promote methanol synthesis activity over CuZn catalysts. Reducing the ZnO particle size can enhance the Cu–ZnO interaction, but its synthesis with a sub-5 nm size still remains a challenge. Moreover, the fabrication of an active powder catalyst with an inverse ZnO/Cu configuration is still very rare. In this work, we report a facile synthesis of inverse ZnO/Cu catalysts by direct calcination of Cu@ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8). The particle size of ZnO and Cu can be tuned by changing the Cu loading as well as the calcination temperature. Importantly, inverse ZnO/Cu catalysts with sub-5 nm ZnO were obtained under gentle calcination at 623 K. In the CO2 hydrogenation reaction, the highest methanol synthesis activity reached 933 g kgcat−1 h−1 at 533 K and 4.5 MPa, with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 0.013 s−1, over an optimized C2Z-623 catalyst, which exceeds the commercial CuZnAl catalyst (HiFuel R120, Johnson Matthey) and has ranked the top reported value over advanced CuZn catalysts under comparable conditions. Such excellent activity is attributed to the inverse structure of Cu particles covered by sub-5 nm ZnO, which promotes the intimate Cu–ZnO interface with enhanced SMSI. Moreover, we find that the methanol turnover frequency (TOF) monotonically increases with decreasing the particle size of ZnO as well as Cu. It is proposed that reducing the ZnO size favors the spillover of reducible ZnOx species onto the Cu surface while lowering the Cu size is responsible for the enhanced amount of exposed Cu steps for accommodating Zn species, both of which could facilitate the formation of Zn covered Cu steps as active sites for methanol synthesis.

Particle size effect of nano-ZnO fillers on the dielectric and energy storage properties of PI/ZnO composite films

Xiaofan Qin,Jing Chen,Haiyang Dai,Yang Yang,Guilin Song,Renzhong Xue,Tingting Zhang,Tao Li

Three series of polyimide (PI)/ZnO composite films were prepared and how their dielectric and energy storage performance is affected by particle size of the nano-ZnO fillers for the films has been systematically investigated. The EDS findings indicate that nano-ZnO particles tend to aggregate in the PI matrix with the increasing ZnO-doping amount, and the nano-ZnO particles with smaller size are more likely to aggregate with the same doping amount due to their higher activity. Profiting from the interface polarization effect between PI matrix and nano-ZnO fillers, the dielectric constant can be improved by incorporating an appropriate number of nano-ZnO fillers, but reduced by excessive doping due to the aggregation of nano-ZnO particles. The experimental results show that the dielectric properties and breakdown strength of these films are closely related to nano-ZnO particle size. For instance, the dielectric constant reaches the maximum value when the content of ZnO-30nm fillers is 0.1  wt %, but mounts to the maximum values as the fillers content for ZnO-50nm and ZnO-90nm is 0.2  wt %. The breakdown strength of PI/ZnO composite films shows a decreasing trend with increasing ZnO-30nm fillers content, while a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with increasing ZnO-50nm and ZnO-90nm fillers content, reaching the highest value when the doping amount is 0.2 wt%, respectively. The PI/ZnO-90nm films exhibit the optimal energy storage performance, and the film with 0.2  wt % ZnO content shows an U d of 4.05 J·cm −3 with an energy efficiency of 75 % under electric field strength of 425 kV/m. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been applied to study the free volume characteristics, and the correlation between interface free volume and electrical breakdown performance of PI/ZnO films has been explained.

Preparation and characterization of unidirectional water conducting double-layer PVA/CS/ZnO-PLA/ZnO nanofiber membranes for wound healing

Zhiyuan Chen,Binjie Xin

During the wound healing process, the surrounding tissue fluid plays a crucial role. However, excessive exudate can lead to wound infection and over-hydration, thereby delaying the healing process. Therefore, developing a novel wound dressing that can unidirectionally remove excess biological fluids and effectively inhibit bacterial infection is particularly important. This study successfully utilized electrospinning technology to prepare a nanofiber dual-layer membrane with unidirectional water transport functionality. Its inner layer consists of polylactic acid (PLA) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, providing excellent hydrophobic and antibacterial properties. The outer layer is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), and nanoscale zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, offering outstanding hydrophilicity and liquid absorption capability. Experimental results demonstrate that this nanofiber dual-layer membrane exhibits outstanding physical, chemical, and biological properties, with a mechanical strength of up to 6.4 Mpa and breathability 17.47 mm/s and antibacterial property is outstanding. In practical applications, this dressing can effectively expel excess biological fluids within just 5 s, preventing wound over-hydration and providing an innovative and feasible solution for the effective treatment of chronic wounds.

Replicating hexagonal metal nanorod from ZnO nanorod

Fanjun Meng,Lei Wang,Fengsen Zhu,Sha Li,Qiaoli Yue,Haibo Li,Jifeng Liu,Yanling Zhai,Jianbo Jia

A novel nanoporous array template with hexagonal nanorod-like morphology was developed with sacrificing nanostructured ZnO. ZnO hexagonal nanorod (NR) array was first electrochemically deposited on ITO, and then was spin-coated with photoresist (PR) followed by heating treatment to harden the PR film. After resolving the ZnO NRs in diluted hydrochloric acid solution, the template with ZnO NR-like nanopores was obtained. The as-prepared template has good stability and uniformity. Additionally, by controlling the deposition charge of ZnO, and the rinsing time in removing a PR layer to expose ZnO top end, the size and pore-density of the template can be controlled. In presence of glucose, an enhancement in oxidation current of Ni NRs was observed due to an electrochemical catalytic reaction scheme. So the Ni NR array modified ITO electrode can be applied for glucose sensing. And the Ni NR array with a higher density gave a higher sensitivity.

Ultra-stable ZnO nanobelts in electrochemical environments

Mengyu Hong,Jingjing Meng,Huihui Yu,Junli Du,Yang Ou,Qingliang Liao,Zhuo Kang,Zheng Zhang,Yue Zhang

Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been widely considered as a promising candidate in electro-chemical devices due to the high electrical transport performance and easy-fabrication. However, the active chemical properties of ZnO nanobelts restrict their application in practical electro-chemical devices. Here, we adopted an indium doping strategy to improve the corrosion resistance of ZnO nanobelts. Compared with other atomic doping methods, the indium doping method not only formed several layers of indium atoms in the body of ZnO nanobelts but also created a ZnxIn1−xO passivated layer on the ZnO nanobelt surface. After doping indium atoms into ZnO nanobelts, the self-corrosion potential increased and the self-corrosion current decreased which greatly reduced its corrosion rate in the electrochemical solution. Furthermore, the electrical transport properties of indium-doped zinc oxide (In–ZnO) nanobelts presented ultrahigh stability even after being soaked in the electrochemical solution for 43 hours. The enhanced anticorrosive quasi-2D ZnO nanobelts offer a promising development of ZnO-based electro-chemical devices.

Multiphonon Process in Mn-Doped ZnO Nanowires

Jia-Min Lai,Muhammad Umair Farooq,Yu-Jia Sun,Ping-Heng Tan,Jun Zhang

The multiphonon process plays an essential role in understanding electron–phonon coupling, which significantly influences the optical and transport properties of solids. Multiphonon processes have been observed in many materials, but how to distinguish them directly by their spectral characteristics remains controversial. Here, we report high-order Raman scattering up to 10 orders and hot luminescence involving 11 orders of phonons in Mn-doped ZnO nanowires by selecting the excitation energy. Our results show that the intensity distribution of high-order Raman scattering obeys an exponential decrease as the order number increases, while hot luminescence is fitted with a Poisson distribution with a resonance factor. Their linewidth and frequency can be well explained by two different transition models. Our work provides a paradigm for understanding the multiphonon-involved decay process of an excited state and may inspire studies of the statistical characteristics of excited state decay.

Preparation of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx/Nafion/Au electrode

Mingchao Cao,Shiteng Liu,Shusheng Liu,Zhaogang Tong,Xijun Wang,Xinhua Xu

In this study, monolayer titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) material was prepared, then the modified ZnO and Ti 3 C 2 T x were self-assembled to obtain the MXene based composite material. Finally, ZnO/Ti 3 C 2 T x /Nafion/Au electrodes were prepared to construct a dopamine electrochemical sensor for detection of dopamine. SEM, XRD measurements and so on verified the synthesis of monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x and preparation of the MXene based composite material. Utilizing Chronoamperometry (I-t), we found the electrodes displayed a linear dynamic range from 0.1 to 1200 μM with a limit of detection of 0.076 μM (S/N = 3). Meanwhile, the sensitivity of the sensor is 96nA/μM and in the prepared biological samples, the recoveries of the sensor were 97.8%∼102.2%. Finally, the electrochemical sensor showed a good reproducibility and stability.

Efficient chemiluminescent ZnO nanoparticles for cellular imaging

Zhi-Yu Liu,Cheng-Long Shen,Qing Lou,Wen-Bo Zhao,Jian-Yong Wei,Kai-Kai Liu,Jin-Hao Zang,Lin Dong,Chong-Xin Shan

s Chemiluminescence (CL) induced by peroxalate fuel and hydrogen peroxide has been widely applied in chemical detection and bioimaging. Nevertheless, the chemiluminescent emitters in the CL are focused on organic small-molecular dyes, most of which encounter serious obstacles in practical application due to their potential biotoxicity and low photostability. Here, bright blue CL is observed when biocompatible zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with yellow photoluminescence (PL) are added into peroxalate and hydrogen peroxide solution, which is originated from the interaction between the zinc interstitial of ZnO NPs and the energy-rich intermediate produced in the CL process. With the modification of silane coupler, the CL quantum yield of ZnO NPs presents two orders of magnitude increase from 6.2× 10 −6 to record 3.7 × 10 −4  E⋅mol −1 for inorganic NPs owing to the protective effect from silicon oxide shell layer. By virtual of excellent CL ability, ZnO NPs have been firstly used as CL probes in bioimaging, which opens the way to a new design freedom for biosensor or bioimaging in the future.

Optical radiation stability of ZnO hollow particles

Vitaly Neshchimenko,Chundong Li,Mikhail Mikhailov,Jinpeng Lv

Zinc oxide has multifunctional physical properties depending on its microstructure and morphology. Herein, we reported the in situ investigations of the radiation stability of ZnO particles with hollow, ball, star and flower shapes under electron and proton irradiation. 100 keV protons with a fluence of 5 × 1015 cm−2 and 50 keV electrons with fluence ranging from 0.5 to 7 × 1016 cm−2 are employed to investigate the radiation stability of nanostructured ZnO particles. In situ reflectance, X-ray photoelectron spectra and photoluminescence were characterized in the irradiation environment to avoid the effects of the atmospheric environment on radiation induced defects. The experimental results reveal that, compared to the other shapes, the hollow structure with the best radiation stability due to the hollow structure facilitates the decrease of the accumulation of radiation defects. This study clearly demonstrates the promise of ZnO hollow particles as a plasmonic nanostructure for achieving high radiation stability, and they could be easily employed to serve as the radiation stability pigment for coatings.

High photocatalytic activity of ZnO–graphene composite

Bing Xue,Yingquan Zou

In this work, ZnO nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites were fabricated via a novel one-step photochemical method . The developed nanocomposite offered high photodegradation efficiency of methylene blue (MB) under UV and visible light. In the proposed route, the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and formation of ZnO nanoparticles occurred simultaneously, which results in high synthesis efficiency of ZnO/rGO nanocomposites. The electron microscopy confirmed that the ZnO nanoparticles were uniformly anchored on rGO sheets. The structure and quality of prepared nanocomposite were assessed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the synthesis of the nanocomposite and degradation of MB, along with a mechanistic insight, is discussed in detail.

Efficient catalytic ozonation over CuO/ZnO for ofloxacin degradation: the synergistic effect between CuO and ZnO promotes the catalytic effect

Zicai Zhao,Yuanyuan Zhang,Shuangfei Wang,Hongxiang Zhu,Jianhua Xiong

ABSTRACT In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) supported copper oxide (CuO) catalyst was prepared and characterized. Ofloxacin (OFL) was selected as the target pollutant to study the catalytic activity of CuO/ ZnO. The characterizations of CuO/ZnO were studied using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy etc. The catalytic activity of CuO/ZnO on OFL degradation efficiency was systematically examined under different experimental conditions: including different catalyst doses, O 3 flow rates, initial pH values and OFL concentrations. The catalytic activity achieved maximal when Cu:Zn was 1:5. The results showed that the degradation of OFL increased with the increase of CuO/ZnO dosage, O 3 flow rate and pH value, but decreased with the increase of OFL initial concentration. Under selected initial conditions (80 mL/min ozone flow, 20 mg/L OFL solution, and 0.63 g/L catalyst dosage), the O 3 +CuO/ZnO process significantly improved OFL removal efficiency due to the production of hydroxyl radical ( • OH), which was approved by tert-butanol (TBA). It was confirmed that CuO and ZnO showed synergistic effect on the catalytic ozonation of OFL. The degradation efficiency of OFL was only slightly decreased after five repeated times, indicating that CuO/ZnO had well catalytic stability.
