Cu2+has increasingly become a great threat to the natural environment and human health due to its abundant content and wide application in various industries. DL-Mercaptosuccinic acid and ZnS-modified Fe3O4nanocomposites were designed, synthesized, and applied in the determination of Cu2+. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopes (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TG). The magnetic fluorescent nanoprobe exhibited highly selective and sensitive fluorescence-quenching characteristics with Cu2+ions. The fluorescence detection linear range was 0–400 μM, with the detection limit being 0.489 μM. In addition, the magnetic fluorescent nanoprobe exhibited a high adsorption and removal rate for Cu2+. It had been successfully applied to detect Cu2+in real water samples with a satisfactory recovery rate. The magnetic fluorescent nanoprobe could simultaneously realize the functions of enrichment, quantitative detection, and separation, reduce the pollution of copper ions and probes, and establish an environment-friendly detection method. Consequently, the magnetic fluorescent nanoprobe offered a new pathway for the removal and detection of not only Cu2+but also other heavy metal ions in water.

The biological effects of nanoparticles are closely related to their intracellular content and location, both of which are influenced by various factors. This study investigates the effects of surface charge on the uptake, intracellular distribution, and exocytosis of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in Raw264.7 macrophages. Negatively charged 3-mercaptopropanoic acid functionalized QDs (QDs-MPA) show higher cellular uptake than positively charged 2-mercaptoethylamine functionalized QDs (QDs-MEA), and serum enhances the uptake of both types of QDs via protein corona-mediated receptor endocytosis. QDs-MEA primarily enter the cells through clathrin/caveolae-mediated pathways and predominantly accumulate in lysosomes, while QDs-MPA are mainly internalized through clathrin-mediated endocytosis and localize to both lysosomes and mitochondria. Exocytosis of QDs-MPA is faster and more efficient than that of QDs-MEA, though both exhibit limited excretion. In addition to endocytosis and exocytosis, cell division influences intracellular QD content over time. These results reveal the charge-dependent interactions between QDs and macrophages, providing a basis for designing biocompatible nanomaterials.

To develop high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors, in this paper, a heterostructured composite material of cerium sulfide and zinc sulfide quantum dots (CeS2/ZnS QD) was successfully prepared by hydrothermal method. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that ZnS QD nanoparticles were uniformly composited with CeS2, effectively increasing the active sites surface area and shortening the ion diffusion path. Electrochemical tests show that the specific capacitance of this composite material reaches 2054 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g (specific capacity of about 256 mAh/g), significantly outperforming the specific capacitance of pure CeS2787 F/g at 1 A/g (specific capacity 98 mAh/g). The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled with CeS2/ZnS QD and activated carbon (AC) retained 84% capacitance after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Benefited from the synergistic effect between CeS2and ZnS QDs, the significantly improved electrochemical performance of the composite material suggests a promising strategy for designing rare-earth and QD-based advanced energy storage materials.

Dopamine (DA) is a widely present, calcium cholinergic neurotransmitter in the body, playing important roles in the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Developing fast and sensitive DA detection methods is of great significance. Fluorescence-based methods have attracted much attention due to their advantages of easy operation, a fast response speed, and high sensitivity. This study prepared hydrophilic and high-performance CdS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) for DA detection. The waterborne CdS/ZnS QDs were synthesized in one step using the amphiphilic polymer PEI-g-C14, obtained by grafting tetradecane (C14) to polyethyleneimine (PEI), as a template. The polyacrylonitrile nanofiber membrane (PAN-NFM) was prepared by electrospinning (e-spinning), and a metal organic frame (ZIF-8) was deposited in situ on the surface of the PAN-NFM. The CdS/ZnS QDs were loaded onto this substrate (ZIF-8@PAN-NFM). The results showed that after the deposition of ZIF-8, the water contact angle of the hydrophobic PAN-NFM decreased to within 40°. The nanofiber membrane loaded with QDs also exhibited significant changes in fluorescence in the presence of DA at different concentrations, which could be applied as a fast detection method of DA with high sensitivity. Meanwhile, the fluorescence on this PAN-NFM could be visually observed as it transitioned from a blue-green color to colorless, making it suitable for the real-time detection of DA.

Aqueous Zinc–sulfur (Zn–S) batteries are promising for the field of energy storage due to their low cost, high theoretical capacity, and safety. However, the large volume expansion and the inherently poor conductivity of sulfur would result in electrode cracking and sluggish reaction kinetics, limiting the practical application of Zn–S batteries. Herein, commercial zinc sulfide (ZnS) is employed instead of S as cathode and proposed a doping modification strategy to solve the above problems. The designed ZnS 0.93 Se 0.07 cathode shows good cycle stability and much-improved reaction kinetics, which is due to the smaller bandgap of ZnS 0.93 Se 0.07 (1.40 eV) compared to ZnS (1.86 eV). As a result, the obtained ZnS 0.93 Se 0.07 cathode exhibits a high specific capacity of 552 mAh g −1 (1672.6 mAh g −1 based on S) at 0.1 A g −1 and 330 mAh g −1 (1000 mAh g −1 based on S) at 2 A g −1 . Moreover, the ZnS 0.93 Se 0.07 cathode can provide a high areal capacity of 3.8 mAh cm −2 at a high mass loading of 10 mg cm −2 and limited electrolyte (4 µL mg −1 ). This work provides a simple and effective cathode modification strategy, which is conducive to promoting the practical application of Zn–S batteries.

Reutilizing heavy metal enriched adsorbents into efficient photocatalysts for antibiotic removal is of great economic value. Herein, spent alkali-lignin biochar (ALB) with enriched Zn 2+ /Cd 2+ ions is valorized into ZnS-CdS/C photocatalyst via a simple vulcanization method. ZnS-CdS/C (3:1) exhibits a superior photocatalytic removal efficiency of 98.6 % for levofloxacin (LEV), with about 60 % of the initial value remained after four cycles. It also shows good photocatalytic removal efficiencies of 92.1 %, 95.4 % and 84.0 % for enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) shows that the introduction of ZnS and CdS in ALB promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies and persistent free radicals (PFRs). The photocatalytic LEV removal mechanism of ZnS-CdS/C indicates that both the abundant PFRs and photogenerated electrons serve as electron donors, efficiently reducing dioxygen to superoxide free radicals (·O 2 - ). The ·O 2 - formed in the above two ways continuously degrade the LEV molecules. Finally, the biotoxicity and developmental toxicity of LEV degradation intermediates confirms that the ZnS-CdS/C degradation system can remove LEV effectively with reduced harm to the ecological environment.

Glutathione-capped water-soluble CuInS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by a microwave-assisted method. Their fluorescence, with excitation/emission peaks at 380/570 nm, is found to be quenched by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) that is produced by the uricase catalyzed oxidation of uric acid (UA) and oxygen. The findings are used in a quenchometric method for the determination of UA. The effects of different ligands on the QDs, of pH value, buffers, enzyme ratio and reaction time were optimized. The detection limit for UA is 50 nM which is lower than other QD-based method, and the detection ranges extends from 0.25–4.0 μM. The assay is simple and sensitive, and no further modification of the QDs is required.

The design and construction of diverse heterojunction architectures have emerged as an effective strategy for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. In this study, ZIF-8/TiO 2 composite nanofibers were successfully fabricated by combining electrospinning technology with a facile in-situ solvothermal method, followed by ZIF-8 sulfurization to form ZnS/TiO 2 nanofiber heterostructures. Comprehensive characterization confirmed that ZIF-8 on the surface of TiO 2 nanofibers was completely converted into ZnS, establishing a robust and intimate interface with TiO 2 . The resulting ZnS/TiO 2 heterojunction exhibited remarkable photocatalytic reduction activity for Cr(VI), achieving 100% removal efficiency within 20 min under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic reaction rate constant of the ZnS@TiO 2 nanofibers was approximately 10 and 319.5 times higher than those of pristine ZnS and TiO 2 nanofibers, respectively. This enhanced photocatalytic performance is attributed to the formation of the heterojunction, which effectively narrows the bandgap of the composite, optimizes photogenerated charge transfer pathways and significantly improves electron-hole pairs separation. Furthermore, mechanistic studies identified photogenerated electrons (e − ) and superoxide radicals ( O 2 − ) as the dominant active species involved in the photocatalytic reduction process. This work provides both fundamental understanding and practical methodology for developing high-performance TiO 2 -based photocatalytic systems, highlighting their potential for advanced water purification technologies.

InP quantum dots (QDs) with low toxicity are an ideal alternative to Cd-based QDs. However, the optical properties and stability of blue-emitting InP QDs are far inferior to those of red and green QDs. In this work, we report the synthesis of highly fluorescent InP/GaP/ZnS core/shell/shell QDs with an emission wavelength of 484 nm and photoluminescence quantum yield of 71%, along with a full width at half-maximum as narrow as 45 nm. In addition, we encapsulated the QDs with siloxane via specific ligand exchange and condensation reactions to improve their stability. The corresponding siloxane capping QD light-emitting device (QLED) shows a maximum luminance of 690 Cd m–2, an external quantum efficiency of 0.09%, and a much longer lifetime than pristine QDs. As a result, these enable the siloxane capping QDs to achieve a much stronger storage stability and a longer QLED lifetime than pristine QDs.

Marine corrosion poses a critical threat to the safety of offshore oil and gas facilities. To address the intrinsic drawbacks of pristine TiO2, ZnS/CdS/Ti3+-TiO2 nanotube composites were rationally fabricated via a synergistic strategy combining electrochemical anodization and successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) techniques. Structural and optical characterization confirmed that the as-synthesized composites feature a well-constructed cascade band alignment, which efficiently mitigates the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. Accordingly, the optimized photoanode delivered a high photocurrent density of 279 µA cm−2. When coupled with 316 stainless steel (316 SS), the composite exhibited a pronounced photo-induced potential of −0.89 V (vs. SCE), achieving a remarkable performance enhancement over pristine TiO2. This enhanced photocathodic protection originates from the synergistic interplay between Ti3+ self-doping and the ZnS/CdS heterojunction: Ti3+ self-doping introduces abundant electron donors to enhance the electrical conductivity of the composite, whereas the ZnS/CdS heterojunction broadens the visible-light absorption range and accelerates the separation and directional migration of photogenerated charge carriers.

Sulfonated polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is considered a highly promising cathode active material owing to its unique solid-solid conversion mechanism, which effectively mitigates the shuttle effect. However, its practical application is hindered by relatively low sulfur content and sluggish reaction kinetics, leading to reduced energy density. This work designs and prepares a coral-like self-supporting composite cathode composed of sulfonated polyacrylonitrile, graphene, and amorphous zinc sulfide through a simple liquid-phase exchange and subsequent sulfidation strategy. This coral-like architecture features a large specific surface area and a three-dimensionally connected porous framework, effectively promoting electrolyte penetration and offering abundant channels for Li + ion transport. More importantly, the amorphous ZnS that is generated in situ and uniformly anchored in the framework acts as highly active polar sites, demonstrating strong chemical adsorption and catalytic conversion capabilities toward polysulfides. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the three-dimensional porous structure and chemical anchoring of the coral-like structure, the obtained composite film cathode exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance: it has a high initial discharge specific capacity of 1824 mAh g −1 at 0.5C, and it can still maintain a stable capacity of 1247 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles, with a capacity decay rate of each cycle as low as 0.063%. This study highlights the dual role of microstructure regulation and active site design, providing a promising candidate for the positive electrode material of advanced lithium‑sulfur batteries.

The practical deployment of Zinc oxide (ZnO) photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is severely impeded by rapid photogenerated carrier recombination and sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Herein, we elucidate a synergistic structural engineering strategy integrating interstitial boron (B) doping, Type-II heterojunction construction, and coherent grain boundary regulation to tailor high-performance B-ZnO@ZnS nanorod arrays. Comprehensive characterizations corroborate that B-doping introduces abundant oxygen vacancies to modulate the electronic band structure, while the coherent B-ZnO/ZnS interface establishes a robust built-in electric field, thereby facilitating bulk charge separation and accelerating interfacial hole transfer. Consequently, the optimized photoanode exhibits a remarkable photocurrent density of 1.054 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (representing a 1.67-fold enhancement over pristine ZnO) and a substantial cathodic shift in onset potential to 0.24 V. Notably, in situ ATR-IR spectroscopy captures the dynamic evolution of key *OOH intermediates, corroborating an adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) where the multidimensional engineering significantly ameliorates the energy barrier for intermediate formation. This work offers a pivotal paradigm for designing durable and high-efficiency photoelectrodes via precise defect and interface manipulation.
