Effective and efficient fabrication of high-flux tight ZrO2 ultrafiltration membranes using a nanocrystalline precursor

Juanjuan Wen,Chao Yang,Xianfu Chen,Minghui Qiu,Yiqun Fan

The use of membrane technology in protein purification is limited by the subsequent membrane fouling . In this study, tight ZrO 2 ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with narrow pore size distributions , which effectively reduced the pollution of ceramic membranes , were prepared using a nanocrystalline precursor. The pore size distribution and permeance of the fabricated membranes were controlled by adjusting the sintering temperature . The molecular weight cut-off of the membranes increased from 25 kDa (7 nm) to 66 kDa (10.9 nm) as the sintering temperature increased from 400 °C to 800 °C, while their permeance increased from 135 to 225 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 . The ZrO 2 UF membrane sintered at the range of 400–600 °C was tested for the BSA molecules solution separation, which showed almost 100% of BSA molecules retention and demonstrated a stable permeance of approximately 80–95 L m −2 ·h −1  bar −1 . Moreover, the sintering temperature of 500 °C was identified as the optimal temperature in terms of the removal of organic additives and energy consumption. The obtained results indicate that the prepared ZrO 2 UF membranes can be potentially used for protein separation.

Three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere composite Pt/TiO2-ZrO2: enhanced performance of photocatalytic degradation and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

An Mingze,Li Li,Zhang Jingjing,Zhao Lijie,Yang Changlong

In this paper, a three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere (3DOH) structure composite Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 was prepared by using polystyrene (PS) colloidal spheres as the template and combining with two-step vacuum impregnation method, of which the composition, crystalline structure, morphology, and surface physicochemical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance (UV-vis/DRS), photoluminescence (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. The results illustrate the crystal type of 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 is mainly anatase TiO 2 and tetragonal ZrO 2 phase, which exhibits a three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere structure. Hollow spheres are arranged orderly; moreover, the composite shows a strong absorption in the visible region due to the effect of surface plasmon absorption (SPA) after doping Pt nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic activity of 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 was investigated by using Congo red as the model molecule. The results show that 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 has good photocatalytic activity under multi-modes photocatalytic experiments, and its activity is higher than that of P25, ZrO 2 , and other Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 not treated by PS colloidal spheres. In addition, the total amount of hydrogen production of 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 is 100 times as much as the commercial P25 in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution experiment (8 h), which shows an excellent photolysis of water hydrogen production activity. The three-dimensional ordered hollow sphere composite 3DOH Pt/TiO 2 -ZrO 2 was prepared by using polystyrene colloidal spheres (PS) as the template and combining with the two-step vacuum impregnation method, which had both good photocatalytic activity under multi-modes and ability on photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Anion-immobilized solid composite electrolytes based on metal-organic frameworks and superacid ZrO2 fillers for high-performance all solid-state lithium metal batteries

Wei Tao,Zhang Zao-hong,Zhang Qi,Lu Jia-hao,Xiong Qi-ming,Wang Feng-yue,Zhou Xin-ping,Zhao Wen-jia,Qiu Xiang-yun

Anion-immobilized solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) are important to restrain the propagation of lithium dendrites for all solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). Herein, a novel SCEs based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, UiO-66-NH 2 ) and superacid ZrO 2 (S-ZrO 2 ) fillers are proposed, and the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and some other electrochemical measurements. The -NH 2 groups of UiO-66-NH 2 combines with F atoms of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) chains by hydrogen bonds, leading to a high electrochemical stability window of 5 V. Owing to the incorporation of UiO-66-NH 2 and S-ZrO 2 in PVDF-HFP polymer, the open metal sites of MOFs and acid surfaces of S-ZrO 2 can immobilize anions by strong Lewis acid-base interaction, which enhances the effect of immobilization anions, achieving a high Li-ion transference number ( t + ) of 0.72, and acquiring a high ionic conductivity of 1.05×10 −4 S·cm −1 at 60°C. The symmetrical Li/Li cells with the anion-immobilized SCEs may steadily operate for over 600 h at 0.05 mA·cm −2 without the short-circuit occurring. Besides, the solid composite Li/LiFePO 4 (LFP) cell with the anion-immobilized SCEs shows a superior discharge specific capacity of 158 mAh·g −1 at 0.2 C. The results illustrate that the anion-immobilized SCEs are one of the most promising choices to optimize the performances of ASSLMBs.

Durable CuO/ZnO/CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst on SiC support for methanol steam reforming (MSR) was prepared by the combination of inverse microemulsion method and precipitation method which is termed as inverse microemulsion/precipitation method. The presence of Ce−O−Zr solid solution facilitated the production of oxygen vacancies and Ce 3+ species in the prepared CuO/ZnO/CeO 2 /ZrO 2 catalyst. Owing to the unique tiny reaction pool and the addition of precipitant for inverse microemulsion/precipitation method, the particle size of the prepared catalyst was principally between 2 and 6 nm, with an average size of 3.66 nm. Besides, the small particle size and the highly dispersed of Cu species boosted the reduction performance of the catalyst, enabling the reduction temperature to be only 201 °C. Construction of a stable NiCo@ZrO2/N-doped biomass carbon composite with layer-by-layer embedding structure and strong interactions for efficient catalytic hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

Furui Hu,Hongguang Zhang,Fuzheng Fu,Ying Zhu,Zuqiang Huang,Tao Gan,Huayu Hu,Yanjuan Zhang

Catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by non-noble metal composites is a potential method for producing the liquid fuel 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF). However, rigorous reaction conditions (≥ 240 °C; ≥ 6 h) lead to the deactivation of composite catalysts and limit their industrial application. Herein, a mechanical activation (MA)-enhanced dispersion and layer-by-layer imbedding strategy was created to construct an efficient and stable MA-NiCo@ZrO 2 /NBC composite for selective catalytic hydrogenolysis of HMF to produce DMF. The MA-NiCo@ZrO 2 /NBC composite with strong metal–metal and metal–support interactions exhibited outstanding catalytic performance for the conversion of HMF with formic acid as a hydrogen source, achieving a HMF conversion of 99.3% and a DMF yield of 96.7% at 200 °C for 2 h (96.7 times higher than those by the catalyst without MA treatment). Comparative investigations reveal that the formation of NiCo alloy and fast electron transfer of metal–acid bifunctional sites improved the preferential adsorption of C=O, and the formate intermediate promoting C–O hydrogenolysis also kept the furan ring intact. Moreover, MA-NiCo@ZrO 2 /NBC with stable structure maintained good catalytic activity after eight cycles. This study provides an attractive strategy for developing efficient and stable non-noble metal composites for catalytic upgrading of biomass-derived chemicals under mild conditions.

Engineering CuOx–ZrO2–CeO2 nanocatalysts with abundant surface Cu species and oxygen vacancies toward high catalytic performance in CO oxidation and 4-nitrophenol reduction

Baolin Liu,Yizhao Li,Shaojun Qing,Kun Wang,Jing Xie,Yali Cao

Highly dispersed surface Cu species and oxygen vacancies are important for CuOx–CeO2 catalysts in many reactions, but it is difficult to increase the concentrations of highly dispersed Cu species and oxygen vacancies simultaneously by only adding a Cu component. Herein, CuOx–ZrO2–CeO2 (CZC) nanocatalysts with different ratios of Cu/Zr have been effectively produced by a simple solvent-free synthetic strategy. The effect of Zr doping on the structure and reactivity of the CuOx–CeO2 catalysts has been investigated with the help of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction as model reactions. It is revealed that the introduction of Zr relieved the agglomeration of surface Cu species, produced more oxygen vacancies in the interior and Cu+ species on the surface of the catalyst, and increased the reducibility of CuOx–CeO2. The CZC catalysts show remarkably enhanced catalytic activity due to the abundant surface active sites and the improved redox properties provided by the suitable doping of Zr into CuOx–CeO2. This work not only offers a practicable way to reconstruct the distribution of active metals on the metal oxide support but also provides a high-efficiency strategy to prepare oxide catalysts with excellent catalytic performance.

Influence of ZrO2 crystal structure on the catalytic performance of Fe-Ni catalysts for CO2-assisted ethane dehydrogenation reaction

Xiuquan Li,Zhongqing Yang,Li Zhang,Ziqiang He,Yunfei Yan,Jingyu Ran,Zukhra C. Kadirova

The catalytic reaction of ethane with CO 2 promotes the value-added conversion of natural gas and the resource utilization of greenhouse gases. In this work, the CO 2 -assisted ethane dehydrogenation reaction characteristics on Fe 1.5 Ni 0.5 /ZrO 2 (M, T, Mix) catalyst with different crystal plane structure were studied through catalyst activity test, catalytic reaction kinetics study and catalyst characterization analysis. It is found that the exposed crystal faces of the ZrO 2 -supported catalyst has a significant effect on the CO 2 -assisted ethane oxidative dehydrogenation reaction. The monoclinic phase Fe 1.5 Ni 0.5 /ZrO 2 -M catalyst exhibits the largest conversion of ethane (21.8%) and CO 2 (25.2%) and the maximum selectivity to C 2 H 4 (80.5%). Monoclinic phase of ZrO 2 selectively exposes the (   −1   1   1) and (1   1   1) low-index surfaces with higher oxygen vacancy (O v ) density and stronger metal-support interaction, which leads to the formation of more Fe x Zr 1-x O 2 structures with high catalytic activity. The reductive oxygen vacancy O v and Fe 2+ -O-Zr 3+ sites promote the activation of CO 2 through the cleavage of C=O bond to supplement O* species. The O* species on the oxidative Fe 3+ -O-Zr 4+ site are captured and combined with H* species derived from the selective cleavage of ethane C–H bond to generate H 2 O.

Efficient and stable removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions by hollow microspheres of MgO/ZrO2 composite oxide

Fulong Cheng,Fangui Nie,Changxin Zhao,Wei Li,Jie Pan

Excessive phosphorus is regarded as one of the main causes of eutrophication, destroying the balance of the original ecosystem of water bodies and endangering human health. In this study, a novel MgO/ZrO 2 composite oxide with a hollow structure (MgZr-CS) was prepared by a simple carbon template method, and served as an adsorbent for the efficient uptake of phosphate from aqueous solutions. For comparison, MgO/ZrO 2 bimetal oxide (MgZr) was also prepared by the conventional co-precipitation method. The effects of pH and coexisting anions on the adsorption of phosphate were studied. The adsorption performance of materials was described by the adsorption kinetic model and isothermal model. The adsorption capability of both MgZr-CS and MgZr was negligibly affected by coexisting ions (e.g., Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − and SO 4 2− ) in water. The adsorption kinetic of both MgZr-CS and MgZr was better correlated with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model , while the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model. However, the Langmuir maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of MgZr-CS was 149.3 mg/g at initial pH of 7, which was about twice that of MgZr. Remarkably, different from MgZr that only presented well phosphate adsorption performance under the acidic environment, MgZr-CS could maintain the excellent adsorption performance within a particularly wide pH range of 3–11. Compared to adsorbents reported in previous papers, MgZr-CS also exhibited larger adsorption capacity and higher pH stability. Moreover, MgZr-CS performed prominent in the treatment of actual domestic sewage, and its phosphate removal rate could reach 99.3%. The adsorption mechanism analysis revealed that the excellent phosphate performance of MgZr-CS was mainly due to the existence of oxygen vacancies providing more active adsorption sites. Results shown here indicated that MgZr-CS can be used as a potential adsorbent for phosphate.

Full-spectrum responsive ZrO2-based phototheranostic agent for NIR-II photoacoustic imaging-guided cancer phototherapy

Chengyuan Zhu,Zhaoyang Ding,Zhengxi Guo,Xiaolu Guo,Aijia Yang,Zhilang Li,Bang-Ping Jiang,Xing-Can Shen

Second near-infrared (NIR-II) window responsive phototheranostic agents have a precise spatiotemporal potential for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. In this study, a full-spectrum responsive ZrO2-based phototheranostic agent was found to achieve NIR-II photoacoustic (PA) imaging-guided tumour-targeting phototherapy. Initially, the ZrO2-based phototheranostic agent was fabricated through NaBH4 reduction to form boron-doped oxygen-deficient zirconia (ZrO2−x-B), an amino-functionalised SiO2 shell and a further covalent connection with hyaluronic acid (HA), namely, ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA. In the ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA system, the oxygen vacancy and boron doping resulted in full-spectrum absorption, enabling a high NIR-II photothermal conversion, high-resolution PA imaging ability and a remarkable production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The surface modification of HA provided ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA with water dispersibility and a targeting capability for CD44 overexpressed cancer cells. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments showed that NIR-II activated ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA had a targeted photothermal/photodynamic effect for cancer elimination under the real-time guidance of NIR-II PAs. Hence, ZrO2−x-B@SiO2-HA displays a precise NIR-II radiation-activated phototheranostic potential for PA imaging-guided cancer-targeting photothermal/photodynamic therapy.

Photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride with Fe2O3-on-ZrO2 polypods derived from MIL-88B-on-UiO-66-NH2 within full pH range: Kinetics, degradation pathway and mechanism insight

Tingting Zhang,Xing Liu,Yanqiu Jiang,Xiaowei Zheng,Jian Zhang,Yudong Li,Defeng Li,Kaifeng Lin

Photo-Fenton reaction has received increasing attention in removing antibiotics in water. Herein, Fe 2 O 3 -on-ZrO 2 polypods were designed and synthesized via metal organic frameworks (MOFs) derivation strategy combined with reflux heating and baking. The experimental results showed that under Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) light irradiation, more than 95 % tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was degraded by Fe 2 O 3 -on-ZrO 2 with Fe/Zr mole ratio of 1.3 in 25 min within full pH range. Mainly due to the following points, there were abundant Fe 2 O 3 -on-ZrO 2 heterojunctions, which conduced to transfer photo-induced electrons (e − ) from ZrO 2 to Fe 2 O 3 , thus accelerating the iron cycle. Besides, OH – adsorbed was oxidized to hydroxyl radicals (·OH) by holes (h + ) in the valence band (VB) of ZrO 2 , and ZrO 2 also enhanced the stability of the catalyst and reduced the leaching of iron ions. Finally, the reasonable degradation pathway and degradation mechanism were speculated by high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), electron spin resonance technology (ESR), scanning Kelvin probe (SKP), the conduction band (CB) and VB positions of Fe 2 O 3 -on-ZrO 2 , etc. This work exhibited a new structure and degradation mechanism, which would further encourage researchers to study the rational regulation of materials with special morphology and structure.

Eco-friendly solid-state synthesis of Na-promoted Mn-Fe/ZrO2 catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Wenxia Zhang,Hongtao Zhang,Mohamed Abbas,Juan Zhang,Zhijun Huang,Sibudjing Kawi,Jiangang Chen

The advancement of large-scale and environmentally-friendly solid-state synthesis methods is of paramount importance for the production of precipitated catalysts, notably Fe-based catalysts utilized in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). In this study, we present an innovative solvent-independent, wastewater-free solid-state approach for the synthesis of highly efficient Fe/ZrO 2 catalysts, elucidating the mechanisms of promotion within this specific methodology. The prepared catalysts underwent rigorous evaluation under industrially-relevant FTS conditions (230–270 °C, 20 bar, and WHSV = 5400 mL/(g cat ⋅h)). A comprehensive suite of characterization techniques was employed to establish the intricate interplay between catalytic activity and structural attributes. We meticulously examined the impact of Na as an alkali promoter and the role of transition metals (Cu and Mn) in enhancing FTS catalytic performance. The catalytic outcomes obtained clearly demonstrate the pivotal role of the synergistic interaction between Mn and Na within the Na-Mn-Fe/ZrO 2 catalyst system in driving the FTS reaction. This synergism significantly enhances FTS performance, yielding an impressive CO conversion rate (89.91 %) while maintaining low selectivity to CH 4 (7.75 %). The incorporation of Mn and Na into the catalyst matrix enhances the dispersion of Fe 2 O 3 , thereby improving the reducibility of Mn/Fe oxides and elevating the electron density on the catalyst surface. These factors facilitate the formation of active Hägg iron carbide (χ-Fe 5 C 2 ), stimulating chain propagation and ultimately leading to the generation of valuable C 5+ hydrocarbon products, which underscores its potential as an optimal candidate for future industrial applications in Fe-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Effects of Zr/Ti molar ratio in SO2−4/ZrO2-TiO2 calcined at different temperatures on its surface properties and glucose reactivity in near-critical methanol

Lincai Peng,Junping Zhuang,Lu Lin

Effects of Zr/Ti molar ratio in SO 2− 4 /ZrO 2 -TiO 2 solid acid catalyst calcined at different temperatures on its surface properties and catalytic activity were thoroughly investigated in this paper. The physicochemical characteristics of prepared samples were determined by N2 adsorptiondesorption, XRD, NH3-TPD and XPS techniques, respectively. It was found that the crystallization temperature of the samples increased after the combination of ZrO 2 and TiO 2 ; and phase transformations from the anatase to the rutile of TiO 2 species and the tetragonal to the monoclinic of ZrO 2 species were effectively suppressed at higher temperature. The sample with a Zr/Ti molar ratio of 3/1 calcined at 450 °C showed the highest surface area and the most acid sites among all the tested samples. The acid site densities of samples were relatively closed to each other if they were calcined at the same temperature, however, decreased with the calcination temperature. The result indicates that the sulfur content in samples is a crucial factor to control the acid site density. Calcining the sample at 650 °C and higher temperatures resulted in a significant desorption of sulfate ion on the samples. The synthesized samples were evaluated as a potential catalyst for glucose conversion under the near-critical methanol conditions (200 °C/4 MPa). The results suggested that the relatively weaker acid sites of the catalyst were more favorable for the accumulation of methyl glucosides, while the moderate acid sites were responsible for the formation of methyl levulinate. The catalytic activity for methyl levulinate production almost increases linearly with the catalyst acid site density. The catalyst deactivation is due to the loss of sulfate ion and the two catalysts with Zr/Ti molar ratios of 3/1 and 1/3 could effectively alleviate the deactivation caused by sulfate solution in the reaction medium and can be reused after calcination with the reuse rate of over 90% in terms of the methyl levulinate selectivity.
