Simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol using a glassy carbon electrode modified with Au@Pd loaded on reduced graphene oxide

Huijuan Wang,Siyu Zhang,Shufang Li,Jianying Qu

Au@Pd core–shell nanoplates were synthesized successfully through the heterogeneous, epitaxial growth of Au on Pd nanoplates. The Pd nanoplates were prepared by reducing H2PdCl4 with PVP, and then served as seeds for the nucleation of Au atoms formed by reducing HAuCl4 with citric acid. Characterization of the as-prepared Au–Pd nanoplates by scanning electron microscopy revealed that a Au shell was formed around the Pd nanoplate. In order to avoid agglomeration, the Au@Pd nanoplates were loaded onto reduced graphene to give a Au@Pd/rGO nanohybrid, which exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the redox of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) simultaneously. The linear detection ranges were 0.01–400.00 μM for HQ and 0.10–400.00 μM for CC, with detection limits of 0.01 μM for HQ and 0.10 μM for CC. Because of the excellent performance, lower detection, wider linear range, and better selectivity, the prepared Au@Pd/rGO nanohybrid has more potential applications and has an expected application in the electrochemical sensing field.

Coordination-driven assembly of catechol-modified chitosan for the kidney-specific delivery of salvianolic acid B to treat renal fibrosis

Jing Li,Cuiting Zhang,Weiming He,Hongzhi Qiao,Jiahui Chen,KaiKai Wang,David Oupický,Minjie Sun

Kidney-specific delivery is critically important for the treatment of renal fibrosis with drugs such as salvianolic acid B (Sal B). Here we report a kidney-specific nanocomplex formed by the coordination-driven assembly of catechol-modified low molecular weight chitosan (HCA-Chi), calcium ions and Sal B. The prepared HCA-Chi-Ca-Sal B (HChi-Ca-Sal B) nanocomplex reversed the TGF-β1-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) in HK-2 cells. In vivo imaging demonstrated a kidney-specific biodistribution of the nanocomplex. The anti-fibrosis effect of HChi-Ca-Sal B was tested in a mouse model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Significant attenuation of the morphological lesions and the levels of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the tubulointerstitium was observed in mice treated with HChi-Ca-Sal B, suggesting that the nanocomplex was able to prevent fibrosis better than the treatment with free Sal B. It was concluded that the HChi-Ca-Sal B nanocomplex showed a specific renal targeting capacity and could be utilized to enhance Sal B delivery for treating renal fibrosis.

Longquan lignite-derived hierarchical porous carbon electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of hazardous catechol and hydroquinone in environmental water samples

Zi-Chun Fan,Zhuang Li,Xian-Yong Wei,Qian-Qian Kong,Zhong-Qiu Liu,Li Li,Jia-Hao Li,Fan Yin,Kun-Lang Lu,Zhi-Min Zong

Catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) featured with toxicity and wide application are regarded as organic pollutant in wastewater, so the detection of CC and HQ is very important. Besides, direct use of low-rank lignite for combustion is not only wasteful, but also leads to increased greenhouse gas production. Hence, its efficient and clean utilization accords with the process of social development and the concept of carbon neutrality. Based on the above two problems, a method of killing two birds with one stone was proposed to solve the clean utilization of lignite and be used to detect CC and HQ. Herein, a series of porous carbons derived from Longquan lignite with well-developed microporous and mesoporous structure were fabricated by pyrolysis, carbonization, and activation under various activation temperatures (600–900 °C). This combination of microporous and mesoporous structures can increase the surface area (3113 m 2 /g) and the active site of the porous carbon, improve its electrical conductivity and electron transport efficiency, and make it as a substrate for constructing electrochemical sensor (ECS) with excellent electrocatalytic activity, and successfully be applied in simultaneous detection of CC and HQ. Compared with some reported results, the prepared ECS exhibits satisfactory electrochemical sensing performance with wider linear concentration range and lower detection limits of 0.16 μM for CC and 0.16 μM for HQ, which is comparable to graphene-based sensors. Furthermore, the ECS possesses good stability, reproducibility, selectivity, and anti-interference, and shows practical applicability in environmental water samples.

Simultaneous determination of catechol and hydroquinone with L-cysteine and nickel cobaltite Co-Functionalised Graphene Oxide Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

Shan Xue,Kaiqian Wang,Yalin Cheng,Biyang Tu,Yang Xia,Shengjie Yuan,Haisheng Tao

Catechol and Hydroquinone are considered to be main organic pollutants in water, and have a threat to human health and ecology security. It is imperative to establish a detection method of catechol and hydroquinone with high selectivity and sensitivity. In this work, a composite of L-Cysteine and nickel cobaltite co-functionalised graphene oxide was synthesised successfully by a facile hydrothermalmethod. The morphology and structure of the as-prepared composite was characterised by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results revealed that the final product formed a 3D framework with urchin-like nickel cobaltite nanoparticle tightly packed on the layers of graphene oxide. The electrochemical properties of the composite modified glassy carbon electrode for detecting hydroxybenzeneisomers (hydroquinone and catechol) were tested by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The results discovered that the modified electrode exhibited an excellent repeatability and anti-interference towards the detection of catechol and hydroquinonewith linear response in the range of 10–140 μM and 10–200 μM, respectively.

Bio-Based Waterborne Polyurethane Sizing Agent Containing Strong Adhesion Catechol Structure for the Interfacial Enhancement of Carbon Fiber/Polyamide 6 Composites

Fei Yan,Gaosong Wang,Shengtao Dai,Qitao Huang,Guodong Su,Xibing Zhan,Liu Liu

Herein, a bio-based polyurethane (PU) was synthesized using L-lysine diisocyanate and castor oil as raw materials. Following the salt formation reaction and subsequent emulsification process, a waterborne sizing agent was successfully obtained. To enhance the adhesion strength between the carbon fibers (CF) and sizing agent, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid containing a catechol group was chosen as the neutralizing agent and introduced into the PU. The particle size of the PU sizing agent was 124.3 nm, indicating its suitability for long-term storage. After treating with 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 wt% concentrations of the sizing agent, the CF referred to as CF1, CF2, and CF3, respectively, were used to prepare CF/polyamide 6 (PA6) composites. The sizing agent considerably improved the interfacial bonding between the CF and the PA6 matrix, with the CF2/PA6 composites showing the greatest enhancement. Specifically, the flexural strength, interlaminar shear strength and interfacial shear strength of the treated composites were enhanced by 28.3%, 47.5%, and 52.3%, respectively, compared with those of the unsized composites. The interfacial failure mechanism of the composites under stress was elucidated via fracture morphology characterization. These findings offer a valuable reference for the future development of novel waterborne PU sizing agents.

Thermal-driven self-healing waterborne polyurethane with robust mechanical properties based on reversible phenol-carbamate network and Fe3+-catechol coordination bond

Yang Liu,Zhengjun Li,Zetian Zhang,Junchao Wang,Liying Sun,Taoling Xie

Realizing environment-friendly and thermal-driven self-healing polymers with robust mechanical properties is an important challenge for the development of next-generation smart materials. Herein, by combining dynamic phenol-carbamate bonds and Fe 3+ -catechol coordination bonds in polymer chains, novel hyperbranched waterborne polyurethanes (FTWPU) with desirable thermal-driven self-healing properties were prepared through two steps, i.e., introducing tannic acid to prepare tannic acid based waterborne polyurethane (TWPU) bearing phenol-carbamate bonds firstly, and subsequently further incorporating Fe 3+ ions to prepare FTWPU in possession of Fe 3+ -catechol moieties. The results exhibited that TWPU possessed good emulsion stability with differing tannic acid content, and improved thermal and mechanical properties, owing to the presence of cross-linking between polyurethane chains, and FTWPU still possessed outstanding storage stability, as well as much higher mechanical properties (tensile strength of 18.4 ± 0.4 MPa, elongation at break of 533.5 ± 5.2 %). Meanwhile, FTWPU presented desirable self-healing ability (i.e., healing efficiencies of tensile strength and elongation at break were 87.5 % and 91.9 %, respectively) after healing under 120 °C for 1.5 h and 85 °C for 30 min, demonstrating a satisfactory balance between good self-healing ability and high mechanical properties. Importantly, reversible phenol-carbamate bonds and metal coordination bonds are predominant factors during the healing process of FTWPU films, as well as high mobility of soft segments and hydrogen bonding effect play a significant role to achieve ultimate healing ability. We can envision that the promising design idea, based on synergistic effect between phenol-carbamate bonds and Fe 3+ -catechol coordination bonds, could provide inspiration for preparing self-healing polymers with superior mechanical properties.

Photocatalytic Selective Degradation of Catechol and Resorcinol on the TiO2 with Exposed {001} Facets: Roles of Two Types of Hydroxyl Radicals

Feng Jiang,Jiansha Gao,Di Lang

Photocatalytic studies on contaminant degradation in water suspension generally suggest that the degradation reaction mainly takes place on the surface of the photocatalysts rather than in the water phase. The mechanism of selective degradation is often difficult to distinguish concerning the contribution of adsorption and radical selectivity. This study is thus designed to investigate the roles of two types of hydroxyl radicals, adsorbed hydroxyl radical (·OHa) and free hydroxyl radical (·OHf), on the selective degradation of catechol (CT) and resorcinol (RE). CT and RE are significantly different in adsorption on a TiO2photocatalyst with a highly exposed {001} facet. CT can be selectively degraded by TiO2and was highly correlated with adsorption. Free radical quenching experiment results showed that the degradation of CT can be identified as the combined effect of both ·OHaand ·OHf, while the degradation of RE was mainly due to the ·OHf. Electron paramagnetic resonance coupled with spin trapping agents was used to detect the relative concentration of hydroxyl radicals in all the photocatalytic degradation processes. After a series analysis, we proposed that the mechanism of selective degradation mainly depends on the concentration of ·OHffor the pollutant molecules with weak adsorption on the catalyst surface.Keywords:photocatalytic;TiO2;catechol;resorcinol;hydroxyl radical;degradation selectivity

Facile Pretreatment of Three-Dimensional Graphene through Electrochemical Polarization for Improved Electrocatalytic Performance and Simultaneous Electrochemical Detection of Catechol and Hydroquinone

Huaxu Zhou,Guotao Dong,Ajabkhan Sailjoi,Jiyang Liu

Three-dimensional graphene (3DG) with macroporous structure has great potential in the field of electroanalysis owing to a large active area, excellent electron mobility and good mass transfer. However, simple and low-cost preparation of 3DG electrodes with high electrocatalytic ability is still a challenge. Here, a fast and convenient electrochemical polarization method is established to pretreat free-standing 3DG (p-3DG) to offer high electrocatalytic ability. 3DG with monolithic and macroporous structure prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is applied as the starting electrode. Electrochemical polarization is performed using electrochemical oxidation (anodization) at high potential (+6 V) followed with electrochemical reduction (cathodization) at low potential (−1 V), leading to exposure of edge of graphene and introduction of oxygen-containing groups. The as-prepared p-3DG displays increased hydrophilicity and improved electrocatalytic ability. As a proof of concept, p-3DG was used to selective electrochemical detection of two isomers of benzenediol, hydroquinone (p-BD) and catechol (o-BD). In comparison with initial 3DG, p-3DG exhibits increased reversibility of redox reaction, improved peak current and good potential resolution with high potential separation between p-BD and o-BD. Individual or selective determination of p-BD or o-BD in single substance solution or binary mixed solution is realized. Real analysis of pond water is also achieved.

Cobalt single-atom nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity for the development of electrochemical and colorimetric dual-mode sensors for catechol detection

Chengyu Zhou,Tingting Chu,Yi Gao,Jinwan Xiang,jian Wang,Wensheng Huang,Yin Zheng

The advancement of rapid phenolic contaminant identification systems holds vital significance in maintaining ecological security while strengthening health protection frameworks. Currently, cobalt-based nanozymes suffer from a significant catalytic activity decline due to active site aggregation, which limits their application in phenol detection. To address this challenge, in this study, highly dispersed cobalt single-atom nanocomposites (CuCo-NPC) were prepared by a cascade anchoring strategy using copper-based metal–organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) as templates. Based on its excellent electrocatalytic and peroxidase-like activities, an electrochemical-colorimetric dual-mode sensor was constructed to simultaneously monitor the electrochemical signals of phenolics at the modified electrode and the colorimetric signals generated by the reduction of the oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (oxTMB) by phenolics. Under optimized experimental parameters, the dual-mode sensing platform demonstrated excellent sensing performance with remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for catechol (CC) determination. The detection limits were determined to be 0.82 μM and 0.34 μM when employing electrochemical and colorimetric analytical approaches, respectively. In the actual water sample spiking experiments, the recoveries of CC ranged from 97.6 % to 100.8 %. To some extent, the single-atom dispersion strategy has overcome the activity limitation of cobalt-based materials and provided a scalable dual-mode sensing method for the on-site detection of phenolic pollutants.

A Mussel-Inspired Design for Robust Catechol-Functionalized Cross-Linking Adhesives Uniting Water Resistance, Low-Temperature Stability, Recyclability, Degradability, and Fluorescence

Wei Wang,Jie Liu,Shilong Zhu,Chaoqun Wang,Yang Li,Xuefei Leng

In the pursuit of green and sustainable development, there is an urgent demand for environmentally friendly adhesives that maintain a stable adhesion under harsh conditions. In this work, bioinspired by the synergistic mechanisms of mussel proteins, we designed a readily accessible and environmentally friendly catechol-functionalized cross-linking adhesive (MPCs) via molecular engineering and thiol–ene click chemistry. By optimizing solvent selection, we preserved a higher density of phenolic hydroxyl groups, significantly enhancing the interfacial adhesion. The resulting adhesive reaches remarkable lap shear strengths of 2.13 MPa in 63 °C water and 1.75 MPa in liquid nitrogen (−196 °C), surpassing most reported catechol-based adhesives. Notably, MPCs exhibit excellent recyclability through thermal reprocessing, retaining strong adhesion even after 10 reuse cycles. Mechanical testing reveals a tensile strength of up to 48 MPa, while the inherent π–π interactions between benzene rings confer photoluminescence under UV irradiation. This property enables fluorescence-based damage detection, as localized mechanical damage causes measurable intensity shifts. Furthermore, MPCs could degrade controllably through ester-linkage hydrolysis in the cross-linker, generating products with excellent biocompatibility. This work not only advances the design of bioinspired adhesives but also provides a sustainable solution for marine-environment and extreme-environment applications.

Decoration of Covalent Polyoxometalate-Organic Frameworks with Pt Nanoparticles and Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes for Simultaneous Electrochemical Detection of Hydroquinone and Catechol

Na Li,Jing-Ru Huang,Hong-Yue Zhang,Min Cui,Bao Sun,Cong Zhang,Hai-Yan Zhao

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are isomers with similar structures, which destroyed ecosystem balance and human health at an alarming rate. Therefore, it is critical to monitor HQ and CC in the environment simultaneously. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes and covalent polyoxometalate-organic frameworks (CPOFs) modified by nanoparticles (PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs) was designed for the simultaneous detection of HQ and CC. Polyoxometalates (POMs) have been extensively studied in the area of electrochemical sensors because of rich reversible multielectron redox behavior. The porous and long stick-shaped CPOFs was synthesized by solvothermal Schiff base reaction, with NH2-POM-NH2 and 2,5-dimethoxy-phenyl-1,4-diformaldehyde as monomers. Using the porosity and large surface area of CPOFs, the obtained PtNPs@CPOFs nanocomposite showed an improved distribution of electroactive sites. At the same time, highly conductive MWCNTs was incorporated to guarantee the conductivity. Consequently, PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs was obtained to improve the electrical conductivity and electrocatalytic activity. The results showed that the PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs/GCE performed a wide range and low detection limit toward the detection of HQ and CC simultaneously. Furthermore, PtNPs@CPOFs-MWCNTs/GCE also had great stability and anti-interference ability.

Tranexamic acid-loaded catechol-modified hyaluronic acid/carboxymethyl chitosan double cross-linked porous gel micropowders for rapid hemostasis and wound healing

Chen Tang,Tuhe Shi,Guohua Xu,Jingbo Yin,Shifeng Yan,Xiaogang Bao

Acquiring rapid and effective hemostasis remains a critical clinical challenge. Current researches focus on concentrating blood components to speed up the hemostatic while ignore the effect of anti-fibrinolysis in promoting blood coagulation. Herein, we designed a novel tranexamic acid (TA)-loaded physicochemical double cross-linked multifunctional catechol-modified hyaluronic acid-dopamine/carboxymethyl chitosan porous gel micropowders (TA&Fe 3+ @HA-DA/CMCS PGMs) for rapid hemostasis and wound healing . TA&Fe 3+ @HA-DA/CMCS PGMs exhibited high water absorption rate (505.9 ± 62.1 %) and rapid hemostasis (79 ± 4 s) in vivo . Catechol groups, Fe 3+ and the protonated amino groups of CMCS induced bacterial death. Moreover, TA&Fe 3+ @HA-DA/CMCS PGMs displayed sufficient adhesion to a variety of wet rat tissues. TA&Fe 3+ @HA-DA/CMCS PGMs on various bleeding wounds , including rat liver injury and tail severed models showed excellent hemostasis performance. The TA&Fe 3+ @HA-DA/CMCS PGMs could promote the healing of full-thickness skin wounds on the backs of rats. The advantages of TA&Fe 3+ @HA-DA/CMCS PGMs including rapid hemostasis, effective wound healing, good tissue adhesion , antibacterial properties and ease of use make it potentially valuable in clinical application.
