A cyclodextrin-liposome system (CL) was developed to encapsulate dihydromyricetin (DMY), to improve its water solubility, bioavailability, and to mask its bitter taste, thus expanding its application in the food field. The dihydromyricetin-cyclodextrin-liposome (DCL) prepared by film dispersion method showed a multivesicular structure with an average particle size of 86.77 nm and an encapsulation rate of 58.4 %. The stability analyzer showed that the DCL had excellent physical stability (instability index: 0.023 ± 0.003) and exhibited good slow-release properties. QCM-D analysis of DCL effectively inhibited the binding of DMY and mucin. The electronic tongue indicated that DCL significantly masked the bitterness of DMY. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies showed that the AUC 0–90min and Cmax of DMY delivered by DCL significantly increased by 5.83-fold and 3.38-fold, respectively, compared with the control group. This study provides a proof-of-concept for the development of an efficient DMY delivery strategy, which is expected to greatly contribute to its potential application in the field of functional foods.

Drug-loaded implants have attracted considerable attention in cancer treatment due to their precise delivery of drugs into cancer tissues. Contrary to injected drug delivery, the application of drug-loaded implants remains underutilized given the requirement for a surgical operation. Nevertheless, drug-loaded implants have several advantages, including a reduction in frequency of drug administration, minimal systemic toxicity, and increased delivery efficacy. Herein, we developed a new, precise, drug delivery device for orthotopic breast cancer therapy able to suppress breast tumor growth and reduce pulmonary metastasis using combination chemotherapy. Poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid scaffolds were fabricated by 3D printing to immobilize 5-fluorouracil and NVP-BEZ235. The implantable scaffolds significantly reduced the required drug dosages and ensured curative drug levels near tumor sites for prolonged period, while drug exposure to normal tissues was minimized. Moreover, long-term drug release was achieved, potentially allowing one-off implantation and, thus, a major reduction in the frequency of drug administration. This drug-loaded scaffold has great potential in anti-tumor treatment, possibly paving the way for precise, effective, and harmless cancer therapy.

In this study, the optimum induction and reaction conditions, and fermentation process of producing Ala-Gln by E. coli Origami 2 overexpressing α-amino acid ester acyltransferase (OPA) were investigated. Besides, the Ala-Gln synthesis by OPA achieved the maximum molar yield of 94.7% and productivity of 1.89 g/L/min due to the extremely high enzyme activity. On this basis, repeated-cycle batch fermentation to produce Ala-Gln indicated that OPA could maintain high Ala-Gln yields and enzyme stabilities after several cell recycling. Consequently, the cost-efficient and environmentally friendly approach for Ala-Gln production by recycling OPA makes a great contribution to further industrial-scale applications.

The amplification of the electrochemical signal is crucial to improving the sensing performance of an immunosensor. In this study, a signal amplification strategy based on the co-catalysis of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and nanoporous gold (NPG) was used to fabricate an electrochemical immunosensor for the determination of Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). For the resulting immunosensor, HRP catalyzed catechol and thus served as a signal label of secondary antibody. NPG with unique properties was selected as a carrier for capture antibody immobilization. Further, NPG had an efficient electrocatalytic activity towards catechol (the substrate of HRP), which thus significantly enhanced the electrochemical signal produced by the HRP-labeled secondary antibody. Based on the co-catalysis of HRP and NPG, the immunosensor exhibited a good linear relationship between peak current density and HBeAg concentration in a wide HBeAg detection range from 1 pg mL −1 to 1 ng mL −1 with a high sensitivity of 23.51 μA mL ng −1 cm −2 as well as a low detection limit of 0.064 pg mL −1 (S/N = 3). Additionally, the immunosensor presented a strong anti-interference capability against human serum, human serum/dopamine, human serum/tryptophan, human serum/NO 2 − , human serum/D-glucose, and human serum/IgG. For the detection of HBeAg in human serum, the concentrations detected by the immunosensor were in good agreement with the standard concentrations that added in the human serum samples. These unique properties potentially make the proposed immunosensor a good choice for HBeAg detection.

Flexible wearable electronic textiles (E-textiles) are predicted to apply in the intelligence management of physical training for automatic, intelligent, and scientific health management. Recently, printing electronic is one of the attractive processes for the large-scale manufacturing of patterned E-textiles. However, it is an enormous challenge that achieve sensing functionality without sacrificing the original performance of fabric. Herein, we proposed a new scalable aerodynamic assisted screen print technology to develop highly sensitive, breathable, and durable electronic textiles via the integration of graphene ink. Briefly, stable graphene ink was fabricated based on the exfoliation and dispersion of cellulose/PEDOT:PSS solution, and directly screen printed on spandex/cotton blend fabric (SCBF) with the assisting of airflow pressure. The as-prepared ink infiltrated and wrapped along the fiber surface by aerodynamic assisted screen printing instead of filling fabric inter-fibers, endowing the SCBF with conductivity (82.16 Ω/sq), flexibility and breathability. Consequently, the acquired E-textile exhibited superior air permeability (38.5 L·m 2 /s), washing durability (> 50 cycles), excellent sensitivity (GF = 36), strain sensing performance and stability (> 9000 cycles). Finally, a monitoring smart garment has been demonstrated to show the potential of a large-scale E-textile for physical training or health management. Graphical abstract

Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) infection is attracting increasing attention, especially superbug infections. As a result, finding ways to reduce AMR is essential. For the time being, natural compound therapy for reducing AMR is an ideal choice. Purpose This study aims to investigate the mechanism of magnolol reducing the AMR of E. coli in vitro and vivo . Methods The morphology and function of E. coli under magnolol treatment were assessed using a scanning electron microscope, qPCR, RNA-seq, and other methods. Moreover, the in vivo treatment effects of magnolol combined with antibiotics were evaluated by HE and IHC staining. Results In this study, we found that magnolol reduced the resistance of ESBL E. coli to the fourth-generation cephalosporin in vitro via two main mechanisms. Firstly, magnolol disrupts iron ion metabolism by increasing environmental iron uptake significantly (P ≤ 0.01), leading to a significant increase in intracellular ROS (P ≤ 0.01) and membrane damage. Secondly, magnolol significantly inhibits the relative mRNA expression of blaCTX-M-1 (P ≤ 0.01) and the CTX-M-1 enzyme activity in ESBL E. coli. Furthermore, we find that magnolol can inhibit ESBL E. coli in vivo by significantly reducing the TLR4-NFκB p65 pathway ( P ≤ 0.01). Conclusion In a word, our results indicate that magnolol is a natural antibacterial adjuvant with potent inhibitory activity against bacterial resistance and exerts this activity through multiple pathways, which has particular significance for the further study of the AMR mechanism.

The demand for wearable display devices capable of real-time information collection is growing rapidly. Among them, electrophoretic display (EPD) shows features of ultra-low power consumption and high readability in sunlight, making them particularly suitable for wearable applications. However, due to high driving voltage and susceptibility to salt, few wearable EPD devices are reported so far. To address this, a stretchable EPD compatible with textiles is fabricated based on waterborne polyurethane. The device exhibits great performance to resist water and sweat, achieving a whiteness of 35 (Y in CIE XYZ) and a contrast ratio of 13.5 at a driving voltage of 30 V. Benefit from the device's excellent bistability and flexibility, there is no degrading to its optoelectronic performance after bending, twisting or stretching. For demonstration, an 8 × 8 matrix display is realized, showcasing that this process is suitable for wearable textile display applications.

The rapid fabrication of artificial intelligence-based hardware worldwide is intensifying the electronic waste (e-waste) crisis, threatening ecosystems and demanding urgent, sustainable solutions for metal recovery. Herein, a glucose-mediated hydrothermal strategy is reported for the efficient reclamation of high-value metals from complex e-waste. Glucose functions as a multifunctional ligand, establishing a specific pathway for metal–organic coordination, enabling selective metal recovery. By precisely regulating reaction kinetics and thermodynamic parameters, the proposed metal–ligand hydrothermal strategy exhibited exceptional recovery of 99.16% for iron (Fe) and 98.67% for silver (Ag), while concurrently converting toxic metals such as lead (Pb) and nickel (Ni) into value-added byproducts without any energy-intensive purification steps. Notably, the process was operated within a closed-loop system. All residual solutions were recycled, eliminating secondary wastewater discharge and enabling the use of the entire components present in the resource. Density functional theory calculations and radial distribution function analysis further revealed the molecular basis of selectivity: Fe(III) preferentially formed bidentate chelates with the aldehyde and hydroxyl groups of glucose, a process complemented by electrostatic interactions that promote rapid nucleation and precipitation. In contrast, other metal ions, Ag(I) and Pb(II), are coordinated primarily via single oxygen sites. Technoeconomic analysis confirmed the economic viability of the process, demonstrating a net profit of $2460 per ton of processed e-waste. This study provides a sustainable and economically compelling waste-to-resource platform guided by molecular-level insights into selective coordination chemistry for advanced e-waste recycling.

The next-generation on-skin devices are expected to provide identical textural characteristics to skin for accomplishing comfortable long-term wearability. Cattle hide is mainly consisted of type I collagen, which is therefore an ideal collagenous-matrix platform for developing skin-like on-skin devices. However, the raw cattle hide has a high water content that leads to poor wearability. Herein, we developed the skin-like wearable (SW) platform via a brand-new inter-fiber spacer-aided (IFS-aided) drying of cattle hide, where an amphiphilic nonionic surfactant that was capable of thoroughly infiltrating into the 3D hierarchical network of collagen fibers (CFs) was employed to work as the inter-fiber spacer to avoid the sticking of CFs during drying. Moreover, the inter-fiber spacer was easily eluted after drying for obtaining the collagenous matrix with highly dispersed fiber structure. The as-developed SW-platform exhibited ideal wearability by exhibiting full-protein nature, outstanding softness (6.808 mm), exceptional water-vapor permeability (5950 g·m -2 ·d -1 ) and high thermal stability. The hierarchical fiber structure with sufficient inter-fiber space endowed the SW-platform with reversible cross-scale deformations of CFs at both the nanoscale and microscale, which demonstrated its promising application in developing the skin-like and eco-friendly e-skins with outstanding sensing capability and flexible display function. The incorporation of illegal drugs into e-cigarettes poses significant threats to both human health and societal safety. Therefore, the development of accurate and rapid detection methods for illicit drug additives in e-cigarettes is of significant importance. This study integrates deep learning with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to develop a highly sensitive detection method for nicotine and four etomidate isomers. First, Raman and SERS detection were performed on five drug standards. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were employed to analyze the characteristic peak vibration modes of the various substances. Additionally, a liquid-liquid extraction pretreatment method for commercially available e-cigarettes was developed, facilitating the simultaneous detection of nicotine and etomidate isomers. Trace detection was successfully achieved for all five substances. Subsequently, an interpretable deep network model was constructed for the classification and identification of these substances, attaining an accuracy of 97.8%. To further enhance the model's transparency and interpretability, gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) was utilized to reveal the critical SERS peaks necessary for molecular discrimination. This research provides robust technical support for the rapid on-site screening of illicit drugs in e-cigarettes.

Long-range piezoelectric transduction in flexible hydrogels is limited by the “trade-off” of conductive pathways between accelerating charge dissipation and suppressing dipole formation. Here, we introduce a surface-heterojunction strategy converting cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into conductive dipolar nanorods by deprotonation of poly(aminophenylboronic acid) (PABA) coating. Boronated ester bonding and hydrogen-bonds at CNCs/PABA interface collectively strengthen dipole moments while inducing n-type doping in PABA and thus enabling charge transport for 18.9-fold conductivity. Integrating molecular-level interfacial alignment of conjugated moieties, CNCs with higher aspect-ratio further promote percolation and reduce threshold by ~14%. The charge transport range in hydrogel is then elongated, which improves its conductivity by 7.0 times and yields robust piezo-electric/resistive dual-mode responsiveness. The hydrogen-bond network also improves adhesion, and imparts intrinsic sensitivity to temperature, salinity, and pH, for distinguishing complex motions and physiological events. This heterojunction-driven co-engineering of dipoles and conductivity offers a generalizable materials concept for advancing high-fidelity soft bioelectronic sensing.

6-monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM), a primary active metabolite of heroin that reaches the human brain, plays a crucial role in producing heroin-associated physiological and lethal effects. Therefore, 6-MAM has emerged as a key target for alleviating the adverse consequences of heroin abuse. In this study, the proposed 6-MAM hydrolaseE. coliaminopeptidase N (eAPN) was recombinantly produced, and its biochemical and functional profiles were investigated. eAPN’s biochemical properties, with respect to pH, metal ions, and temperature, and catalytic functions toward peptidase substrates and 6-MAM were thoroughly examined. Extensive experiments reveal that incorporation of an N-terminal His-tag notably affects eAPN’s aminopeptidase activity. This cost-effective recombinant eAPN exhibits favorable thermostability and optimal activity at pH 7.5. Kinetic analysis toward peptidase substrates reveals that eAPN preferentially cleaves peptides following amino acid residues in the order of Ala > Arg >> Met, Gly > Leu > Pro, indicating a preference for small or basic amino acid residues as substrates. Computational and experimental studies have, for the first time, discovered that eAPN is capable of catalyzing the hydrolysis of heroin and 6-MAM, which has shed light on its functional versatility and potential applications. This work elucidates the biochemical properties of eAPN and expands its catalytic functions, thereby laying the groundwork for a deep understanding and further reengineering of eAPN to enhance its activity toward 6-MAM for heroin detoxification.
