Enzyme-triggered aggregation of upconversion nanoparticles for targeted photodynamic therapy via NIR irradiation

Bo Ling,Yaguang Wang,Huaze Dong,Hongqi Chen,Lun Wang

A core–shell–shell nanoplatform responsive to alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was developed for efficient tumor targeting and near-infrared (NIR)-activated photodynamic therapy (PDT). Specifically, UCNP@SiO2-Bodipy@FFYp was synthesized by encapsulating upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) within a silica shell, embedding bodipy derivatives as photosensitizers, and covalently attaching a phosphorylated peptide (FFYp). Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the UCNP emission at 550 nm to bodipy facilitated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation upon NIR excitation. In the tumor microenvironment, ALP-triggered dephosphorylation converted UCNP@SiO2-Bodipy@FFYp into the more hydrophobic UCNP@SiO2-Bodipy@FFY, thereby promoting tumor cell uptake and tumor-specific accumulation. By leveraging this ALP-responsive targeting strategy alongside the deep-tissue penetration of NIR light, significant tumor growth inhibition was achieved both in vitro and in vivo. Notably, after 15 days of treatment in Balb/c mice bearing HeLa tumors, the tumor volume was reduced by over 95%. Taken together, these results highlight the promise of UCNP@SiO2-Bodipy@FFYp as a tumor-responsive nanoplatform for highly effective, targeted PDT in cancer therapy.

Li-Ping Wang,Lu-Lu Jiang,Zong-Ze Cui,Zheng-Hui Hu,Le-Ping Miao,Jian-Rong Li,Heng-Yun Ye,Chao Shi

Hybrid perovskites are highly desirable for potential applicationsin optoelectronics. Although luminescent hybrid perovskites have a variety of technically important applications, achieving dielectric transition and near-infrared (NIR) luminescence properties simultaneously is still challenging. Herein, utilizing the NIR-luminescent properties of rare-earth ions, an Nd3+-containing nitrate-bridged hybrid bimetal dielectric, (MQ)5[K2Nd2(NO3)13] (1; MQ = N-methylquinuclidinium cation), was successfully constructed. It exhibited a switchable dielectric constant (ε′) between low- and high-dielectric states along with NIR-luminescent property. The contrast was strikingly reached 1.88, and the was 1.18 times higher than that of silicon nitride. Furthermore, the reversibility of the switchable dielectric constant between the and at 1 MHz was observed after many ε′-switching cycles with no obvious weakening, which endowed this material with the desirable thermodynamic stability. Notably, 1 exhibited NIR photoluminescence at 1068 nm with a fluorescence lifetime of 1.920 μs, and the Nd3+ ion acted as an activator of the NIR luminescence. This finding represents a significant step toward advanced NIR-emissive responsive dielectrics for optoelectronic applications.

Constructing multilevel nanostructures fiber composites for NIR/UV/X-ray multiband electromagnetic protection

Xin Qu,Jinqiu Ye,Yuzhe Huang,Ce Wang,Ping Hu,Rui Zhao,Yong Liu

With the growing threat of electromagnetic interference, developing lightweight and flexible multiband protection materials to shield humans from harmful electromagnetic interference is becoming particularly crucial. However, existing protection materials are bulky and designed primarily for single-band electromagnetic waves. This paper constructs bismuth/tungsten oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube/polyacrylonitrile (Bi/WO 3 /MWCNTs/PAN) nanofiber composites with multilevel nanostructures through electrospinning and post-processing technology for effective NIR/UV/X-ray Multiband Electromagnetic Protection. The porous structure, combined with the strong absorption capabilities of MWCNTs for low-frequency electromagnetic waves and high photoelectric effects of high atomic number materials (Bi/WO 3 ), synergistically achieves remarkable electromagnetic protection performance. This includes 99.6 % near-infrared shielding and 99.95 % against ultraviolet (thickness: 0.12 mm), along with 55.2 % X-ray attenuation and a mass attenuation coefficient of 13.94 cm 2  g −1 at 33 keV (thickness: 1.92 mm). Light weight (0.3 g cm −3 ), fantastic flexibility, and moisture permeability (9.22 kg m −2  d −1 ) endow the material with outstanding wearable performance. In addition, Bi/WO 3 /MWCNTs/PAN also possesses excellent thermal insulation performance (36.96 mW m −1  K −1 ), temperature resistance (289.8 °C), and good electrical insulation. These exceptional performances demonstrate its enormous potential for application in electromagnetic shielding and provide new ideas for designing advanced multiband electromagnetic protection materials.

Photonic Crystal-Integrated Thermo-Responsive Smart Windows with Multicolor and Enhanced NIR Shielding

Chunhao Li,Aojue Ke,Huifang Shen,Xinya Zhang

Smart windows have attracted significant attention due to their potential for energy conservation. However, their practical applications are limited by the monotonous color variation and poor near-infrared (NIR) shielding performance. In this study, a novel smart window was constructed by integrating a crack-free photonic crystal array (100 mm×100 mm) with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and antimony tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles. The photonic band gap of the photonic crystal array endows the smart window with unique visible light modulation properties and temperature indication functionality, enabling dynamic color variation at various surrounding temperatures. The smart window exhibits excellent solar light modulation (ΔTsol=38%) and NIR transmittance (TIR=30%), which is attributed to the synergistic effect of ATO nanoparticles and PNIPAm hydrogel. The incorporation of CMC enhances the optical modulation capability and durability of the PNIPAm hydrogel. Due to the heat-absorbing and NIR absorption properties of ATO nanoparticles and the thermochromic and heat insulation characteristics of PNIPAm hydrogel, the smart window achieves a maximum temperature difference of 7.2 °C compared with normal glass. This work provides a novel strategy for constructing smart windows based on photonic crystals, demonstrating great potential in temperature monitoring, heat insulation, and other applications.

NIR-Absorbing Organic Charge Transfer Complexes for Photothermal Antibacterial Therapy and Wounds Healing

Peirong Bai,Qiong Zhang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Yating Huang,Jian Gao,Binrong Zhang,Liping Li,Yating Wen,Ruiping Zhang

Bacterial infections and subsequent inflammation are major obstacles to efficient wound healing and present an increasing clinical challenge due to rising antimicrobial resistance. Recently, photothermal therapy (PTT) offers a non-antibiotic, spatiotemporally controllable strategy to eradicate pathogens. However, the development of promising photothermal agents with high NIR response, biocompatibility and facile preparation is still challenging. Here we report supramolecular assembled donor-acceptor charge-transfer complex (CTC) nanoparticles TPD-TCB (TT NPs) achieved by precise modulation of energy-level engineering between commercially available donor and acceptor molecules. CTC formation yields a narrowed effective HOMO-LUMO gap, which enables TT NPs to exhibit broad NIR absorption extending toward ∼1200 nm and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 38%. Notably, under 808 nm irradiation TT NPs achieve potent photothermal killing of Gram-positive (90.7%) and Gram-negative (94.9%) bacteria in vitro and effectively suppress infection in an in vivo wound model. Additionally, TT NPs + NIR accelerate wound closure by clearing pathogens, resolving inflammation and promoting epidermal differentiation and regeneration. This work establishes a practical and generalizable CTC-based bandgap engineering strategy for creating high-performance organic photothermal agents suitable for antibacterial therapy and wound repair.

Ni-doped carbon dots unlock dual NIR-II photothermal and photodynamic cancer therapy

Jun Song,Minghao Kang,Yongping Li,Jiaqing Guo,Huibo Wang,Liwei Liu,Junle Qu,Shuai Ye

Due to their excellent biocompatibility, outstanding water dispersibility, and multifunctional integration capability, carbon dots have emerged as highly promising materials for cancer phototherapy. In this study, nickel-doped carbon dots (Ni-CDs) were successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, which enables efficient and uniform Ni incorporation within the carbon framework. Ni-CDs exhibit strong absorbance in the range of 840–1100 nm. They have a reactive oxygen species (ROS) production rate of 3.27% and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 61.33% under 1064 nm laser irradiation. The enhanced dual-mode performance can be attributed to Ni-induced nonradiative relaxation and improved electron transfer. They are the first reported nickel-doped carbon dots with synergistic therapeutic capabilities of PDT/PTT in the NIR-II region. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that Ni-CDs can effectively induce tumor cell death, with no significant toxic damage observed in normal tissues/organs. This study highlights the potential of Ni-CDs as a multifunctional nanoplatform for deep-tissue cancer treatment, providing a reference for the design of materials for the synergistic combination of photothermal and photodynamic therapy of deep tumors.

Yu Zhang,Yu Zhang,Kai Li,Kai Li,Hala Muji,Hala Muji,Qixu Tian,Qixu Tian,Yuansong Gao,Yuansong Gao,Narimai J,Narimai J,Xinyu Gu,Xinyu Gu,Fengqi Zhao,Fengqi Zhao,Fengqi Zhao,Kefu Chao,Kefu Chao,Dengfeng Peng,Dengfeng Peng,Dengfeng Peng,Dengfeng Peng

In this study, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, Cr3+-doped garnet fluorescent material (Ca2TbScGa2Ge2O12:Cr3+, CTSGGO:Cr3+) in high-entropy oxides has been successfully synthesized by a high-temperature solid-phase method and systematically investigated in terms of its photoluminescence (PL) and mechanoluminescence (ML) properties. The material shows broadband near-infrared emission in the 700–900 nm range when excited by 460 nm blue light, with a half-peak width of 116 nm. Additionally, it achieves NIR-visible synergistic emission in both PL and ML modes through efficient energy transfer from Tb3+ to Cr3+ (with a transfer efficiency of 75%). When encapsulated in PDMS, the material exhibits dual ML responses: 450–650 nm (Tb3+) and 650–900 nm (Cr3+) under mechanical stress. It was integrated with commercial blue LED chips and PDMS for practical applications in night vision imaging, tissue penetration visualization, and multiple-mode optical anti-counterfeiting. This work offers new insights for designing broadband NIR-emitting materials and developing photoelectronic and force-responsive devices.

Cs2NaYCl6:Er@KBr composite for applications of NIR LED with low working temperature

Xin Tong,Hongquan Yu,Xiangping Li,Sai Xu,Baojiu Chen

Owing to their environmental friendliness, structural tunability, and ability to emit self-trapped excitons, lead-free halide double perovskites (DPs) have demonstrated significant potential for applications in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodetectors. However, their chemical and thermal stability is generally insufficient. These limitations hinder their practical application in LEDs, as these devices typically generate considerable heat under high operating currents and prolonged usage, particularly in the case of infrared LEDs. In this work, Er 3+ -doped double perovskites (Cs 2 NaYCl 6 and the Cs 2 NaYCl 6 @0.6 KBr composite) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The emission intensity of Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :2 % Er 3+ @0.6 KBr is five times greater than that of Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :2 % Er 3+ within the wavelength range of 1400–1600 nm. In the Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :Er 3+ @0.6 KBr composite, the surface defects of Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :Er 3+ were modified by the introduction of KBr, leading to an increase in the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :Er 3+ from 9.5 % to 30.0 %. Under a 150 mA working current, the operating temperatures of the near-infrared (NIR) LED devices based on the Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :2 %Er 3+ and Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :2 %Er 3+ @0.6 KBr composite are 53.2 and 47.4 °C, respectively. After working for 2 h, the temperatures of the NIR LEDs based on Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :2 %Er 3+ and Cs 2 NaYCl 6 :2 %Er 3+ @0.6 KBr were 60.3 °C and 46.0 °C, respectively, under a 100 mA operating current.

Thermal/NIR activated self-healing polyurethane with shape memory toward multi-level encryption

Weijing Yao,Jun Huang,Wei Liu,Jiahao Ma,Jingyang Li,Dongsheng Liu,Yumeng Yang,Xuying Liu,Qingyong Tian,Wentao Liu

Stimulus-responsive fluorescent materials have attracted widespread attention in information encryption. However, the development of versatile, tough, self-healing fluorescent anti-counterfeiting materials with high confidentiality remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we present a shape-memory self-healing fluorescent polyurethane (HFPU) for the construction of a multi-level information encryption platform. The internal microphase-separated structure, along with abundant hydrogen bonds and disulfide bonds interactions, endows HFPU with excellent toughness (138.2 MJ/m 3 ) and rapid self-healing capability (90.3 %) under thermal excitation. The HFPU backbone incorporates 4-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-diphenylethenyl]phenol (HPPE) units, which exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) during solid-state aggregation, enabling the encryption of screen-printed two-dimensional (2D) fluorescence patterns. Furthermore, MXene as a photothermal filler, was introduced into HFPU to realize the remote non-invasive triggering of shape memory and the self-healing process via NIR light. The shape memory behavior enables the concealment of 2D fluorescence information via three-dimensional (3D) structural transformations, facilitating multi-level and multidimensional information storage and encryption. This study provides a feasible strategy for the development of smart anti-counterfeiting materials with long lifespan and enhanced information security.

A Multimodal Smart Window with Visible-NIR-LWIR Electro-Modulation for All Weather

Yu Zeng,Yong Liu,Tengyao Jiang,Fangyuan Zhao,Likun Wang,Sainan Ma,Guojian Yang,Sijia Han,Guoqiao Lai,Gang Tan,Gaorong Han

Intelligent modulation of solar and thermal radiation for a smart window, including visible, near-infrared (NIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectral tri-bands (0.38–25 µm), to achieve indoor comfort and energy efficiency is a critical frontier in sustainable building design. However, independent regulations of multi-functional radiation of visible lighting, NIR heating, and LWIR radiative cooling for dynamic operational requirements and weather conditions are not fully solved. A PET/ITO/PB/Pt-NPs electrode featuring separated reactions of ion insertion and metal electrodeposition for dual-band modulation of visible and NIR via precise potential control, enabling multifunctionalities such as illumination, glare reduction, and privacy protection is proposed. A multimodal smart window of lighting-heating-emitting electro-modulation device (LHE-ED), wherein electrochromism and dynamic emittance are delicately manipulated for tri-band modulation, possesses six independent electro-driven states of multi-scene lighting-heating-emitting regulations for the first time, exhibiting excellent wavelength selectivity of △ T Vis = 41.24%, △ T NIR = 53.95%, and Δ ε 8-13 µm = 0.35. Building energy simulations demonstrate the LHE-ED outperforms commercial low-E glass across diverse climate zones, showcasing a maximum reduction in CO 2 emissions of 34.01 kg (m 2 year) −1 and a decrease in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption by 34.18% annually, which paves the way for next-generation smart window in terms of energy saving and environmental preservation.

NIR-Programmed Trimodal Macrophage Nanovectors for Effective Anti-Tumor Therapy in Mice Model

Yiwen Xie,Yuwei Shi,Zhihui Li,Sumei Xu,Zhiyun Chen,Xuxia Ye,Wenxi Yan

Introduction Chemotherapy remains the primary treatment modality for advanced and unresectable tumors; however, its antitumor efficacy is limited, and it has significant toxic effects on normal tissues. Methods To address these challenges, cell carrier- and nanomaterial-based strategies were employed in this study to engineer macrophages into functional “Trojan horses” loaded with ICG–CDDP mesoporous silicon nanoparticles, yielding an intelligent cell carrier chemotherapeutic drug delivery system with controlled light responsiveness and “on-demand” nanophotothermolysis capabilities. Results Our findings demonstrate that the intelligent macrophage drug delivery system actively homes to tumor sites and that indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence can be used to visualize exogenous macrophages at the tumor site. In response irradiation of the delivery area with exogenous near-infrared (NIR) light, ICG generates a thermal effect, resulting in the lysis of macrophages and facilitating spatiotemporally controlled burst release of intracellular cisplatin, thereby precisely targeting tumor cells. Simultaneously, ICG can trigger immunogenic cell death (ICD) under NIR irradiation, transforming “cold tumors” into “hot tumors” and eliciting a prolonged antitumor immune response, thereby overcoming the limitations associated with chemotherapeutic drugs. Conclusion This collaborative trimodal strategy successfully represents a triple breakthrough in precise delivery, spatiotemporally controlled drug release, and immune activation. It is an innovative solution for the precise treatment of advanced tumors and has substantial potential for clinical translation.

Dual-responsive and NIR-triggered Detachable Nanoplatform for Integrated Thrombolytic and Antiplatelet Therapy

Huijuan Zhang,Zijun Qi,Chaoqun Wang,Yingmei Tian,Lin Hou

To develop an efficient thrombolytic therapy approach that addresses the limitations of current fibrinolytic drugs, such as short half-life, weak thrombus specificity, and poor penetration ability, we constructed a NIR-triggered detachable nanoplatform (PA/UK@IcpLipo) using thin-film hydration method designed to integrate attack and defense mechanisms for thrombolytic therapy. This platform can actively identify thrombi by binding to GPIIb-IIIa receptors overexpressed on activated platelets. Upon NIR laser activation and interaction with thrombin in the thrombotic microenvironment, the thermosensitive liposomes ruptured, releasing PA/UK core for deep penetration into the thrombus. Our results showed that the PA/UK@IcpLipo nanoplatform efficiently promoted rapid thrombolysis under the action of UK (attack), followed by PA exerting an antiplatelet aggregation effect (defense). This dual-action approach significantly improved vascular reperfusion rates. The NIR-triggered detachable nanoplatform offered a promising solution for enhanced thrombolysis efficiency and reduced bleeding risk, addressing critical limitations of current fibrinolytic therapies.
