Microplastics (MPs) pollution and freshwater scarcity have emerged as one of the most severe global environmental crises, while conventional removal methods often suffer from inefficiency and secondary pollution. Here we developed an interfacial solar evaporator composed of a functional pectin-NH 2 /sorghum stalk (PUS) hydrogel for simultaneous freshwater production and MPs removal. The PUS system achieved evaporation rates of 3.48 ± 0.15 and 3.29 ± 0.07 kg·m −2 ·h −1 in realistic seawater and influent wastewater, respectively. Notably, flow cytometry and in-situ Raman analysis confirmed the effective removal of MPs in seawater (90.24 %) and wastewater (87.14 %). Further long-term experiments (30 d) exhibited evaporation rates of 19.45 ± 1.61 and 19.19 ± 1.43 kg m −2 ·d −1 in seawater and wastewater, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations identified that van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonding (NH…O=C and NH…O–C) synergistically govern MPs capture and PUS structural stabilization. Techno-economic analysis (TEA) confirmed a competitive freshwater production cost of 0.12 USD/kg, underscoring the feasibility of large-scale MPs-removing solar evaporation technique. This study reveals the industrial potential of natural functional polysaccharide hydrogels and lignocellulose in freshwater production and deeps the adsorption mechanisms of functional pectin with MPs, which provides new strategies to remove MPs and produce fresh water.

Neohesperidin (NH) is a flavanone glycoside compound possessing diverse biological activities. However, NH is unstable in physiological condition and poorly soluble in water, and thereby it may show limited bioavailability. The aim of the present study was to facilitate the controlled delivery of NH in simulated gastrointestinal (GI) tract with enhanced cellular uptake using biopolymer conjugation onto nanoliposome (NL). The carrier systems were characterized by dynamic light scattering, HPLC analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . The biological activity was analyzed by in vitro antioxidant activity , rhodamine (Rh123)-assisted cellular uptake, and acrylamide (AA)-induced ROS model on Caco-2 cells. The results confirmed the size of nanocarriers fall in the range of 87–225 nm, well-encapsulation of NH, and conjugation of chitosan (CH) and pectin (P). In vitro digestion study revealed that P and CH-conjugated-nanoliposomes (P-CH-NL) significantly controlled the NH release following by anomalous diffusion mechanism, and preserved around 72–78% of NH in GI condition. The ABTS antioxidant activity, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing activity indicated that conjugated-nanoliposomes can preserve greater antioxidant activity after GI digestion. In vitro cellular uptake study showed enhanced Rh123 uptake by carrier systems, particularly P-CH-NL exhibited the highest uptake of around 141% followed by CH-NL (129%) and NL (100%). Cytotoxicity results also exposed that conjugated-nanoliposomes can significantly protect the human Caco-2 cells from AA-induced ROS generation. Conclusively, this work provides a promising approach for the controlled delivery of lipophilic natural products with enhanced cellular uptake at colonic epithelial cells and greater biological activity.

The ultrasound-microwave assisted HCl extraction of pectin from potato pulp was optimized using the response surface methodology. Effects of extraction temperature, pH, and time on the yield were evaluated, and structural characteristics of pectin extracted under optimal conditions were determined. The yield was 22.86 ± 1.29% under optimal conditions of temperature 93 °C, pH 2.0, and time 50 min. The obtained pectin was rich in branched rhamnogalacturonan I (61.54 mol%). Furthermore, the pectin was a low-methoxyl (degree of methylation, 32.58%) but highly acetylated (degree of acetylation, 17.84%) pectin and the molecular weight was 1.537 × 10 5 g/mol. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance indicated that pectin had a linear region of α-1, 4-linked galacturonic acids which could be methyl and acetyl-esterified, and rhamnose linked with galacturonic acid to form rhamnogalacturonan which was branched with side chains. Scanning electron microscopy showed most of pectin had a lamellae structure.

Pectin is a minor wall polysaccharide with potential applications for bioproducts . Despite the application of specific plants and biomass-based sorbents for environmental remediation, little has been reported about characteristic roles of pectin. Using the natural rice mutant ( Osfc16 ) treated with Cd , this study explored that pectin could predominately enhance Cd accumulation with lignocellulose, mainly due to remarkably raised uronic acids deposition. The Cd-treatment further reduced lignocellulose recalcitrance for significantly enhanced biomass saccharification and bioethanol production along with almost complete Cd release. Using all remaining fermentation rice residues that are of typical ribbon-structure and large surface, this study generated novel biosorbents by optimal chemical oxidation with the pectin extraction from citrus peels, and examined consistently raised Cd and methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacities. Therefore, this work has proposed a mechanism model about multiple pectin enrichment roles for Cd and MB removals in agricultural and industry locations with full lignocellulose utilization towards bioethanol production.

The inefficient delivery of pesticides causes unpleasant side effects on the ecological environment. Stimuli-responsive controlled release formulations offer a promising avenue for increasing delivery to specific locations on demand. However, designing platforms that achieve efficiency, sustainability, and biocompatibility simultaneously remains a considerable challenge. Here, high-purity organosilica nanoparticles (OSiNPs) are extracted from rice husk biomass and engineered into nanocapsules with an average diameter of 42.59 nm by coating them with a pectin shell (Lam@OSiNP-Pec), which serves as a gatekeeper to regulate release. The platform has a high loading content of lambda-cyhalothrin (Lam) at 22.67% ( w /w). Lam release is dual-responsive, triggered by pH changes and pectinase activity. Confocal microscopy demonstrates the translocation of fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled OSiNPs within coconut palm tissues. The distribution profile of Lam@OSiNP-Pec in plants achieves markedly higher uptake, enhanced translocation, prolonged persistence, and superior insecticidal activity against the red palm weevil ( Rhynchophorus ferrugineus ). Following trunk injection, Lam@OSiNP-Pec induces 96.7% larval mortality at 25 cm and 90% at 100 cm from the injection site within seven days, whereas the conventional formulation achieves only 50% and 16.7% mortality, respectively. These findings demonstrate that pectin-coated, rice-husk-derived OSiNPs provide an efficient, targeted, and environmentally sustainable nanoplatform for precision pest management in agriculture.

Three sunflower head pectin (SFHP) with different molecular weights (Mw = 4.50, 97.23, and 254.64 kDa) were obtained by enzyme-assisted extraction and characterized by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 M HCl solution was evaluated by the weight loss measurement. The inhibition efficiency (IE%) increased as its concentration increases and decreased as the temperature increases. The SFHP with the lowest Mw of 4.50 kDa exhibited an IEmax of 92.05% at the medium concentration (2.0 g L–1). The inhibition properties of SFHP (Mw = 4.50 kDa) were investigated electrochemically and theoretically. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that the charge-transfer resistance increased as its concentration increases, the double-layer capacitance decreased as concentration increases, and the IE% also increased as concentration increases. The potentiodynamic polarization (PP) revealed that the SFHP acted as mixed-type inhibitor. The IE% reached 90.3% at the medium concentration (2.0 g L–1) of SHFP. The three-dimensional super depth digital microscopy and scanning electron microscopy tests confirmed the formation of inhibitor films on the surface of mild steel. The adsorption of SFHP on the mild steel surface was proved to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The theoretical studies via density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation further revealed the mechanism of corrosion inhibition.

With a global annual production of 6 million tons, tobacco leaves contain pectin as their most abundant polysaccharide. However, the structure and prebiotic-like potential of tobacco leaf pectin remain poorly understood. In this study, crude pectin named TLPA was extracted from tobacco leaves with ammonium oxalate, and further fractionated to obtain the major fraction TLPA-1. Multi-technique structural characterization demonstrated that TLPA-1 is a pectin-rich heteropolysaccharide containing predominant homogalacturonan (HG)-like and rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I)-like structural features, together with minor neutral sugar-rich components. The HG region was dominated by 1,4-linked Gal p A residues, whereas the RG-I region additionally contained alternating 1,2-linked and 1,2,4-linked Rha p residues substituted with arabinan-, galactan-, and possibly other structurally diverse side chains. TLPA and TLPA-1 resisted simulated gastrointestinal digestion and were gradually utilized during in vitro fecal fermentation. Both fractions reshaped the gut microbial community, promoted carbohydrate-fermenting bacteria, and enhanced short-chain fatty acid production. These findings provide systematic insight into the structural characteristics, digestive stability, and fermentability of tobacco leaf pectin, suggesting its potential as a microbiota-accessible polysaccharide and provide a structural foundation for the high-value utilization of tobacco leaf biomass.

AH-SC/P served as a multi-interface building block for active fruit coatings. • Acid–heat restructuring improved fruit-wax adhesion nearly five-fold. • Pectin regulated colloidal phase behavior and processable viscoelastic networks. • AH-SC/P stabilized 3% EUG with 94.95% encapsulation efficiency. • AH-SC-P-E delayed fruit deterioration with preliminary 28 d compatibility. Poor wetting and weak retention on low-energy waxy fruit surfaces remain major engineering barriers for waterborne edible coatings, even when the coating matrix shows good barrier or antimicrobial activity in model systems. Here, we developed a multi-interface engineering strategy to construct transport-regulated active coatings by restructuring sodium caseinate (SC) into wax-affinitive amyloid-like assemblies and regulating the resulting assemblies with pectin (PEC). Citric acid-assisted heating produced β-sheet-rich acid-heat-treated SC (AH-SC) assemblies with exposed hydrophobic domains, supporting stronger adsorption on a representative fruit-wax model and increasing the 180° peel force nearly fivefold from 65.3 to 323.2 N/m. PEC acted as a charged hydrocolloid regulator, balancing the wax affinity of AH-SC with colloidal phase control, shear-thinning processability, weak viscoelastic network formation, and oil–water interfacial adsorption. The optimized 2:1 AH-SC/P ratio stabilized 3% eugenol (EUG) with 94.95% encapsulation efficiency, enabled two-stage EUG release, and sustained antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. Upon drying, the emulsion was converted into a flexible, water-resistant, visually compatible, and water-removable coating matrix. Application tests on kumquats and strawberries showed reduced water loss, maintained firmness, delayed quality deterioration, and suppressed microbial growth. A 28-day mouse oral gavage study showed no obvious systemic or histological abnormalities under the tested conditions, supporting preliminary in vivo compatibility. Overall, this work establishes AH-SC-PEC as a single food-compatible hydrocolloid building block for coordinating oil–water stabilization, coating-matrix formation, fruit-wax adhesion, active-compound transport, and post-use removability. The objective of this study was to develop a green, microwave-assisted method for synthesizing stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with potent antibacterial activity, using naringin and pectin as dual reducing and stabilizing agents. Four AgNP formulations were prepared with different naringin-to-pectin ratios: N-AgNPs (naringin only), P-AgNPs (pectin only), NP-AgNPs1 (3:1 ratio), and NP-AgNPs2 (1:3 ratio). NP-AgNPs1 displayed the largest TEM particle size but the lowest polydispersity index, the highest thermal stability, and the highest Ag + release. Antibacterial assays demonstrated that NP-AgNPs1 exhibited the strongest activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Mechanistic studies revealed that NP-AgNPs1 induced significant reactive oxygen species generation, protein leakage, reducing sugar leakage, and lipid peroxidation, indicating that the antibacterial mechanism involves oxidative stress-mediated membrane damage. In summary, the synergistic combination of naringin and pectin at a 3:1 ratio enables the green synthesis of stable, antibacterial AgNPs, offering a promising platform for food packaging and biomedicine.

Volatile amines generated during meat spoilage provide direct chemical signals for freshness evaluation, but rapidly translating these signals into stable visual responses remains a challenge. Herein, a rapid colorimetric indicator film was developed by incorporating sodium lignosulfonate-regulated ZIF-67 (ZIF-67@SLS) into a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/pectin (CP) matrix. Modification with SLS endows ZIF-67 with a surface that exhibits greater affinity for amine compounds, thereby enabling it to interact more efficiently with volatile amines associated with meat spoilage. After integration into the CP matrix, CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% achieved a ΔE of 19.72 after 10 min of NH 3 exposure, representing an 83.8% increase compared to CP/ZIF-67 (ΔE = 10.73), indicating a faster and stronger ammonia-responsive color transition. Meanwhile, the CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% film maintained good color stability during 21 days of storage at 4, 25, and 50 °C, with ΔE values remaining below 5. The optimized CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% film also exhibited improved mechanical and barrier performance, with tensile strength and elongation at break reaching 6.49 ± 0.08 MPa and 46.10 ± 2.04%, respectively, and water vapor transmission rate decreasing to 767.71 g m −2 d −1 . When applied to pork freshness monitoring at 4 and 25 °C, the CP/ZIF-67@SLS-5% film displayed visible color transitions from pale purple to brown during storage, enabling timely visual indication of pork spoilage. This work demonstrates that SLS-regulated ZIF-67 can serve as a response-active colorimetric unit for developing rapid ammonia-responsive indicators toward meat freshness monitoring.

This study investigates the effects of Plasma-activated water (PAW) treatment on cell wall polysaccharide metabolism in goji berries during storage. The results indicate that PAW treatment modulates plant hormone levels and reduces the activity of cell wall-degrading enzymes, thereby slowing water loss and the softening process of the fruits. In the PAW-treated group, indoleacetic acid (IAA) and abscisic acid (ABA) levels were significantly lower than those of the control group in the later storage stages, while Gibberellin A 3 (GA 3 ) levels remained higher, suggesting a positive impact on hormone homeostasis. Additionally, PAW treatment effectively inhibited the decline in the molecular weight of water-soluble pectin (WSP) and sodium carbonate-soluble pectin (SCSP), as well as the increase in Polygalacturonase (PG) and β-glucuronidase (β-Glu) activity. Overall, PAW treatment played a beneficial role in delaying cell wall degradation and softening, maintaining structural stability, and thereby enhancing the storage quality and shelf life of goji berries.

Protein–polysaccharide–polyphenol ternary complexes could be used to prepare a food-grade Pickering emulsion. However, the mechanism by which polyphenols improve the emulsifying ability of fibrous proteins and polysaccharide complexes is still unclear. In this study, we prepared a complex of gallic acid (GA)-grafted pectin (pectin-GA) and whey protein nanofibers (WPF) to explore the mechanism of GA that improves the emulsification properties of the complex. The results indicate that GA hinders the orderly arrangement of pectin chains and exposes more hydrophobic groups of WPF in the complex. Under the action of GA groups, pectin and WPF transformed from a bundle-like fiber aggregation network to a disordered, intertwined network. These changes enhanced the interfacial wettability of the complex, forming a tighter continuous network around the oil droplets, thereby improving the stability of the emulsion. The findings provide new perspectives on the mechanism by which polyphenols regulate the emulsifying capacity of polysaccharide–protein complexes.
