Eco-friendly flame retardant poly(lactic acid) composites based on banana peel powders and phytic acid: flame retardancy and thermal property

Kong Fan-bei,He Qi-lin,Peng Wei,Nie Shi-bin,Dong Xiang,Yang Ji-nian

A novel bio-flame retardant (PA-B) was prepared based on green materials--banana peel powder (BPP) and phytic acid (PA), then PA-B was used to prepare flame retardant poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites. The flame retardancy and thermal property of PLA composites were studied. It can be found that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of PLA composite with 15.0 wt% BPP is 22.1%, showing the heavy dripping during the combustion and failing to reach the vertical burning tests (UL-94) V-0 rating. However, when 15.0 wt% PA-B is added, the LOI is significantly increased to 37.5%, and the composite can reach UL-94 V-0 rating with the dripping problem is obviously reduced. Furthermore, PA-B is helpful to ameliorate the thermal property of PLA composites under the high temperature. The char residue of PLA/PA-B15 is 10.9 wt% at 550.0 °C, showing much higher value than that of PLA/B15 (3.3 wt%) and pure PLA (almost nothing left). From flammability analysis, PA-B not only is a crucial part of promoting the formation of char layer with high quality in the solid phase, which can play a “barrier effect” role to protect the underlying matrix and retard combustion process, but also has the flame retardant effect in the gaseous phase on the basis of PO· free radical. This work provides an efficient way to prepare bio-based flame retardant PLA composites, and also offers a new method to reuse agricultural wastes like banana peel. Full Bio-Based Polyvinyl Alcohol Film With Excellent Flame Retardancy and Improved UV-Shielding Property Based on Phytic Acid and Tannic Acid

Wentao He,Hailiang Cao,Xiaoyu Wu,Zhijun Ruan,Xiaotao Wang

Developing full bio-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film with exceptional flame retardancy and improved UV-shielding property remains a major challenge. Here, bio-based phytic acid (PA) and tannic acid (TA) were incorporated into PVA by a simple solution blending method. Due to the inherent flame retardant characteristics and synergistic flame retardant role of PA and TA, the resulting PVA composite film presented outstanding flame retardant performance. Specifically, the PVA/PA/TA film exhibited excellent self-extinguishing behavior, achieving UL-94 VTM-0 level and a high limiting oxygen index of 45.3%. Compared with pristine PVA film, the peak heat release rate and total heat release showed reductions of 57% and 64%, respectively. Furthermore, contributed to the abundant hydrogen bond sites in the molecular structures of PA and TA, multiple hydrogen bond networks were constructed. The elongation at break of PVA/PA/TA film improved to 250.2% from 153.0% for PVA film, increasing by 63.5%. Additionally, due to the UV absorbing functional groups existing in PA and TA, the PVA/PA/TA film presented enhanced UV-shielding property. This work paves the way for fabricating advanced PVA films for packaging and electronics by a simple, sustainable and effective approach.

Fe3 +-doped PDA and phytic acid modified BN anchored with Co-Ni/B nanosheets for improved flame protection of waterborne epoxy coatings

Chunlin Chen,Zhikui Huang,Guoqing Xiao,Beibei Ren,Guirong Zhao,Shuang Qing,Ting Ma,Chunyan Chen,Chuanlin Mou

PDA@Fe was loaded onto BN surface, imparting abundant functional groups and enhancing carbonization performance. • High-phosphorus-content PA was grafted onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to promote the cross-linking of the polymer into a char. • Co-Ni/B were uniformly loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to construct a hierarchical BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B flame retardant. • The nano-reinforcing agent combines high P-N-B content with Fe, Co, Ni to achieve synergistic flame retardancy. Boron nitride (BN) is regarded as an effective nano-flame retardant due to its high thermal stability and thermal shielding effect. Here, Fe 3+ -doped polydopamine (PDA@Fe) was first immobilized on the BN surface to provide abundant functional groups and enhance its catalytic carbonization capability. Subsequently, high-phosphorus phytic acid (PA) and cobalt-nickel borate nanosheets (Co-Ni/B) were loaded onto the BN/PDA@Fe surface to prepare the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B composite flame-retardant material. Notably, this multi-level structured nano-reinforcer combines the synergistic flame-retardant effect of high P-N-B content with the highly efficient catalytic charring ability of multiple metal ions (Fe, Co, Ni). Notably, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating achieved the lowest back surface temperature (167.9 °C) and exhibited the highest expansion height (25.2 mm) and expansion ratio (19.69), demonstrating its excellent thermal insulation performance. Furthermore, the BN/PFPA@Co-Ni/B/EP composite coating exhibited the highest residual carbon content (29.9%) and the lowest smoke density (39.2%). This can be attributed to the strong catalytic pyrolysis effect of the multi-metal ions, which converts more pyrolysis intermediates into stable carbon, thereby increasing carbon residue while reducing smoke emissions. Microstructural analysis revealed a dense and intact carbon layer, providing strong support for its exceptional thermal protection performance. The successful preparation of this novel flame retardant, which combines high barrier properties, high phosphorus and nitrogen content, and multi-metal-catalyzed carbonization, offers a new approach for developing high-performance refractory coatings. Phytic Acid Doped Polypyrrole as a Mediating Layer Promoting Growth of Prussian Blue on Cotton Fibers for Solar-Driven Interfacial Water Evaporation

Xueyao Wang,Dongmei Yang,Xianhui An,Xueren Qian

Phytic acid doped polypyrrole (PPy) as a mediating layer was in-situ coated on cotton fibers (CFs) to promote the growth of Prussian blue (PB) and construct the PB/PPy@CFs composite. The results showed that the proper amounts of PA doped PPy in-situ generated significantly promoted the growth of PB on CFs, the PB deposition ratio increased from 12.29% (PB@CFs) to 32.4% (PB/PPy@CFs), and the growth of PB on PPy@CFs could be completed in 4 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the PB particles with perfect nano cubic structure were formed in the composite. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that both PB and PPy were successfully deposited on CFs. The PB/PPy@CFs composite had excellent light absorption, hydrophilicity, wettability, and photothermal property, and the surface could be heated up to 81.5 °C under one sun illumination. The PB/PPy@CFs composite as a photothermal conversion material was used for solar-driven interfacial water evaporation, the water evaporation rate was 1.36 kg·m−2·h−1at the optical concentration of 1 kW·m2, and the corresponding photothermal conversion efficiency increased from 81.69% (PB@CFs) to 90.96% (PB/PPy@CFs).Keywords:cotton fibers;Prussian blue;polypyrrole;phytic acid doping;mediating layer;photothermal conversion material

In situ polymerization of polyaniline on cotton fabrics with phytic acid as a novel efficient dopant for flame retardancy and conductivity switching

Qingqing Zhou,Jiayi Chen,Tianchi Zhou,Jianzhong Shao

A flame-retardant conductive cotton fabric switch was successfully prepared by the in situ polymerization of polyaniline doped with novel phytic acid (PA) by impregnation in an ice water bath for 24 h. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and thermal properties of the fabric before and after the in situ polymerization of polyaniline with PA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and TG-FTIR. The experimental results demonstrated that the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the original fabric increased to 32% and the sheet resistance (Rs) decreased to 1.13 kΩ □−1. Under the PA de-doped state, the fabric had no flame-retardant and conductivity properties. Nevertheless, the excellent flame-retardant and conductivity properties of the fabric were obtained once more after re-doping with PA, which indicated that the flame-retardant and conductive textile switch was prepared successfully. Remarkably, the variation in the P content by XPS and the characteristic absorption peak of PA by FTIR made the doping behavior of PA on the surface of different fabrics clear. During the pyrolysis of the original and finished fabric, the maximum decomposition temperature (Tmax) and the maximum emission (Te) of light gas decreased from 380 °C to 290 °C, and the carbon residue content increased from 12.6% to 39.2% at 700 °C, which indicated that the in situ polymerization of aniline doped with PA resulted in the superior flame-retardant property of the fabric. This work provides a green method and basis for the preparation of multi-functional textiles, thus improving the added value of textiles.

Double-layered surface decoration of flaky aluminum pigments with zinc aluminum phosphate and phytic acid–aluminum complexes for high-performance waterborne coatings

Wenqi Li,Ling Shi,Junying Zhang,Jue Cheng,Xiaodong Wang

This paper reported the double-layered surface decoration for aluminum flakes by coating a zinc aluminum phosphate passive film, followed by fabricating a phytic acid–aluminum complex sealing film. The chemical compositions and structures of surface-decorated aluminum flakes were characterized by Fourier -transform infrared, X –ray photoelectron , and energy-dispersive X –ray spectroscopy and their morphology and double-layered structure were confirmed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy . The surface-decorated aluminum flakes not only show excellent dispersibility in water due to the enhanced hydrophilicity , but also exhibit good corrosion resistance and chemical stability against water. Most of all, the double-layered surface decoration leads to an improvement in optical performance of coating surface such as glossiness, flop index and distinctness of image compared to the single-layered one when the surface-decorated aluminum flakes are applied for waterborne coatings. The surface-decorated aluminum flakes developed by this work can well serve as a good flaky aluminum pigment for high-performance waterborne coatings.

Effect of amorphous phytic acid nanoparticles on the corrosion mitigation performance and stability of sol-gel coatings on cold-rolled steel substrates

Xiang Gao,Ru Yan,Lei Xu,Houyi Ma

Amorphous phytic acid nanoparticles were prepared via a condensation reaction of phytic acid with aminopropyltriethoxysilane. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared characterizations demonstrated that there were abundant phosphate groups on the surface of as-prepared phytic acid nanoparticles. The advanced composite phytic acid nanoparticles doped silane sol-gel coating was fabricated on the cold-rolled steel substrates using sol-gel technique and introducing phytic acid nanoparticles into the coating. The results of electrochemical tests showed that the doping of phytic acid nanoparticles greatly improved the anti-corrosion and durable performances of the silane coatings. The simple strategy which utilized the “active” nanoparticles to improve the corrosion mitigation and durable performances of coating is expected to find wide application in the anti-corrosion coating industry.

A UV-curable coating constructed from bio-based phytic acid, D-sorbitol and glycine for flame retardant modification of rigid polyurethane foam

Jinke Yu,Ling Sun,Lan Ding,Yufei Cao,Xiaohui Liu,Yuanlin Ren,Yuesheng Li

When confronted with a fire, the flammability of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) makes it extremely easy to burn violently. In this work, a green biomass derived flame retardant coating was synthesized with phytic acid as acid source, D-sorbitol as carbon source and glycine as gas source. A simple UV curing technique was used to improve the flame retardancy of RPUF . Coated RPUF exhibited a limiting oxygen index value of up to 39.7 % and successfully met UL-94 testing criteria with V-0 rating. In comparison to control RPUF, coated RPUF showed an extended ignition time of 3 s, a remarkable reduction of approximately 60 % in the peak heat release rate, and possessed commendable smoke suppression property. The flame retardant mechanism was analyzed, unveiling the emergence of compact char residue on the surface of coated RPUF after burning, accompanied by the liberation of non-combustible gases. Therefore, these results demonstrated that cost-effective UV-curable flame retardant coating forms protective char layer on the surface of RPUF, providing efficient flame retardancy while preserving its excellent properties.

Nitrogen-doped carbon nanoframes modified Li3V2(PO4)3 derived from phytic acid with ultra-high rate performance for rechargeable Li ion batteries

Tao Huanga,Lifeng Guan,Shuai Jin,Dehui Zhang,Wangwen Liao,Xiangyang Zhou,Xingxing Liu,Chen Wu,Wei Zeng

The low electrical conductivity of Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LVP) impedes its practical application. To address this issue, this study enhances its conductivity by introducing nitrogen-doped carbon nanoframes into LVP. Using phytic acid as a carbon and phosphorus source, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a nitrogen source, nitrogen-doped nanoframe-modified LVP material (LVP@NC) was successfully synthesized. Importantly, the carbon nanoframes of LVP@NC are entirely derived from the precursor’s thermal decomposition, simplifying the synthesis process and reducing production costs. By optimizing the process parameters, significant improvements were achieved in key performance indicators, including the initial discharge capacity at 1C (132.85 mAh·g −1 ), long cycling life at 10C (98.98 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles), and rate capability at 50C (99.65 mAh·g −1 ). These improvements are attributed to the introduction of nitrogen-doped nanoframes, where the high-temperature decomposition of PVP leads to the formation of porous honeycomb-like structures, and nitrogen doping in the nanocarbon framework introduces defects and active sites, thereby promoting lithium-ion migration and facilitating electrolyte penetration. This simple, novel, and energy-efficient method demonstrates significant potential for the large-scale preparation of high-performance cathode materials.

Enhancement of flame-retardancy and self-extinguishing in cellulose paper by bio-based phytic acid chelate-mediated interfacial assembly of Mg(OH)₂

Haoran Jiang,Yong Hu,Wu Xu,Ziwen Dong,Song Kong

Cellulose-based paper, widely used in cultural heritage preservation and art, suffers from inherent flammability. Conventional phosphorus-based flame retardants, derived from depleting phosphate ores, necessitate sustainable alternatives. This study introduces an innovative layer-by-layer assembly strategy to fabricate biomass-derived MH-P@Mn and MH-P@Ni core-shell flame retardants. Phytic acid, a biogenic phosphorus source, chelates metal ions (Mn 2+ /Ni 2+ ) to form stable coatings on magnesium hydroxide. When applied to cellulose paper, these materials exhibit superior flame-retardant performance compared to commercial phosphorus-based counterparts, particularly at medium-to-high loadings. Mechanistically, they enhance inert gas emission during pyrolysis, delaying thermal degradation. The mild, rapid synthesis enables development of eco-friendly, multifunctional cellulose paper with enhanced fire resistance and sustainable phosphorus utilization, promising diverse applications.

Phytic acid and CaCl2 co-treated rice straw fibers/unsaturated polyester composites with excellent flame retardant, water resistant and dimensional stability properties

Zhao Feiyang,Liu Huijuan,Jin Yilin,Ru Hongfu,Wang Longfei,Xiang Shuangfei,Li Hao,Zhao Shujun,Fu Feiya,Camilleri Ing. Duncan,Liu Xiangdong

The application range of rice straw (RS) is limited by its poor flame and water resistance. It’s still a great challenge to endow RS fibers with excellent flame and water resistance properties without compromising the intrinsic mechanical properties. Here, a simple surface treatment strategy of RS fibers via co-treatment with phytic acid (PA) and calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) was developed. First, PA was grafted onto RS fibers by esterification reaction. Then RS fibers were ionically crosslinked by CaCl 2 treatment. Modified RS fibers (PCRS) were then mixed with unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) to produce PCRS/UPR composites (PCRU). Benefiting from Ca 2+ complexes via the ionic crosslinking between Ca 2+ and –P (=O)–OH of the PA, –OH of the RS fibers, PCRU demonstrates enhanced tensile strength (12.04 MPa), good waterproofing capability, and flame-retardant performance. PCRU exhibites low water absorption rate (5.90%) and dimensional stability (thickness deformation less than 1.76%) after 168 h of water immersion. In addition, the limiting oxygen index and the total heat release of the prepared PCRU composites are 29.7 and 11.3 kJ/g, which reach the standard for flame retardant materials. Therefore, this study provides a simple and green pretreatment strategy of rice straw fiber for the applications in flame retardant, low water absorption, and dimensionally stable composites. Fabrication of a chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose composite foam with phytic acid-modified hydrotalcite for highly efficient U(VI) removal from aqueous solution

Detao Li,Huamin Wang,Feiqiang He,Zhi Gao,Limin Zhou,Di Cai,Li Xu,Xi Wu,Zhen Yang,Jinbo Ouyang

The nuclear industry's production generates significant uranium-containing wastewater. Owing to radioactivity, this wastewater seriously threatens environmental safety and human health, becoming a major bottleneck for nuclear energy's sustainable development. Adsorption-based uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater represents a promising strategy, as it facilitates the recovery of a valuable resource while significantly mitigating environmental pollution. Chitosan contains active functional groups like amino groups and hydroxyl groups, this study employed chitosan cross-linking and composite technology, supplemented by freeze-drying methods. Based on the synergy of multi-functional groups, a composite foam adsorbent (HPC) was constructed, which consists of phytic acid-modified layered hydrotalcite rich in phosphate groups and chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose. This adsorbent was employed for the removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions, and its adsorption performance was systematically evaluated under various conditions. The results demonstrated that under optimal conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity for U(VI) reached 272.28 mg/g. The adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm, indicating monolayer chemisorption. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The HPC adsorbent possesses a high specific surface area and is rich in diverse functional groups, including carboxyl, hydroxyl, amino, and phosphate groups. The synergistic effect among these functional groups enhances U(VI) adsorption through mechanisms such as chemical complexation, ion exchange, and isomorphic substitution. These findings suggest that HPC is a promising high-performance adsorbent for the treatment of uranium-containing radioactive wastewater.
