Advanced ion separation in polyamide nanofiltration membranes via interfacial polymerization regulated by dynamic polyphenol-metal coordination

Yufan Hao,Bin Jiang,Na Yang,Longfei Zhang,Hao Jiang,Keting Li,Runjia Mu,Yongli Sun,Luhong Zhang

Developing advanced nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) for inorganic salt ions separation remains a significant challenge in the value-added process of water treatment. Herein, we engineered a highly permeable-selective TA/Fe/Ca/PA-p NFM through a novel strategy for the interfacial polymerization (IP) regulated by the dynamic polyphenol-metal coordination. Interestingly, the dynamic coordination occurred after the substrate surface was first modified with tannic acid (TA) and Fe 3+ and then coated with an aqueous phase solution containing piperazine (PIP) and Ca 2+ . In this process, the coordination competition between Fe 3+ and Ca 2+ for TA and the conversion of TA/Fe 3+ bis-complex into tris-complex were conducive to forming more uniform TA/Fe/Ca complex on the substrate surface. Meanwhile, TA can also perform Michael addition with PIP to control the diffusion of PIP to the organic phase. Following the IP reaction, the nascent TA/Fe/Ca/PA NFM underwent post-treatment in a sodium citrate (SC) solution to dissociate the TA/Fe/Ca complex by further applying the dynamic coordination, resulting in a crumpled and thinner separation layer with desirable surface properties. The optimized TA/Fe2/Ca/PA-p NFM exhibited a pure water permeability of 36.1 L m −2  h −1 ⋅bar −1 , nearly 2.4 times higher than that of the original PA NFM. Correspondingly, the Na 2 SO 4 rejection reached 99.4 % and its Cl − /SO 4 2− separation factor was 118.3. This outstanding permselectivity was mainly attributed to the decreased mass transfer resistance, the expanded effective permeability area, and the increased negative charge on the membrane surface. Additionally, the TA/Fe2/Ca/PA-p NFM was endowed with good operational stability, pressure resistance, and antifouling performance. This eco-friendly and cost-effective approach paves the way for fabricating high-performance NFMs and demonstrates the great potential of dynamic polyphenol-metal coordination in water treatment.

Metal polyphenol network/cerium oxide artificial enzymes therapeutic nanoplatform for MRI/CT-aided intestinal inflammation management

Zhichao Deng,Wenqi Ma,Chenguang Ding,Chaojun Wei,Bowen Gao,Yuanyuan Zhu,Yujie Zhang,Feng Wu,Mingxin Zhang,Runqing Li,Mingzhen Zhang

Intestinal inflammation, such as ulcerative colitis (UC), is a condition in which there is chronic or recurring inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract . Designing safe, effective, and multifunctional nanomedicines is one of the current difficulties in the treatment of UC. Here we developed a delivery nanosystem based on metal polyphenol network/cerium oxide artificial enzymes (MPN@CeOx) to manage UC and evaluate the severity of inflammation by MRI/CT imaging. MPN@CeOx was engineered by Fe 3+ and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) wrapped around CeOx. Increased levels of oxidative stress in the inflammatory lesion facilitated the release of Fe 3+ and EGCG from MPN and liberated CeOx. EGCG with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects plus CeOx with superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity effectively scavenged reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines to protect cells from oxidative damage . In addition, H 2 O 2 -responsive releasing of Fe 3+ at the site of inflammation and Ce elements in CeOx enable MRI/CT imaging of UC. In mice colitis models, oral administration of enteric-coated MPN@CeOx alleviated intestinal inflammation and intestinal barrier dysfunction. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that MPN@CeOx ameliorated UC symptoms mainly through inflammation-related signaling pathways . MPN@CeOx with multilevel inflammation management and multimodal imaging capabilities represents an innovative diagnosis and treatment approach for UC.

Conformational changes and functional properties of whey protein isolate-polyphenol complexes formed by non-covalent interaction

Yueyue Meng,Chun Li

The present study was conducted to evaluate the non-ovalent modifications of whey protein isolate (WPI) with gallic acid (GA), chlorogenic acid (CA) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The structural and functional properties of WPI before and after binding with GA, CA and EGCG were investigated. Results showed that free sulfhydryl groups and surface hydrophobicity significantly decreased in WPI after binding with phenolic compounds . Significant structural alterations in complexes were demonstrated, characterized by a red-shifted maximum emission wavelength in intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy, and a significant decrease in α-helix and β-sheet and a remarkable increase in β-turn and random coil contents in fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Moreover, the presence of three polyphenols induced enhanced solubility, foaming and emulsifying capacities of WPI. These findings suggest the feasible application of GA, CA and EGCG to improve the functional properties of WPI and the potential uses of WPI-polyphenol complexes in food industries.

Protein-polyphenol functional ingredients: The foaming properties of lactoferrin are enhanced by forming complexes with procyanidin

Changhong Li,Taotao Dai,Jun Chen,Xin Li,Ti Li,Chengmei Liu,David Julian McClements

The solution turbidity and intrinsic fluorescence quenching increased after procyanidin was mixed with lactoferrin. The addition of procyanidin also caused a reduction in the surface hydrophobicity of the lactoferrin, suggesting procyanidin bound to non-polar patches on lactoferrin’s surfaces. Moreover, the binding interaction caused an appreciable alteration in the structure of both the polyphenol and protein. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the interaction was spontaneous and mainly driven by entropy changes, suggesting that hydrophobic interactions dominated. A computational docking simulation provided insights into the location of the most-likely binding sites on the protein, as well as the nature of the interaction forces involved. In particular, both hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding were found to be important. The binding of the procyanidin to the lactoferrin enhanced its foaming properties. These results may lead to the development of a new class of natural functional ingredients that can be used in food products to improve their quality attributes.

Recyclable heterogeneous Pd nanoparticles supported on plant polyphenol-modified γ-Al2O3 for hydrodechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenols

Xiao Meng,Peng Yu,Pang Mengting,Hao Baicun,Wang Yujia,Zhang Yulian,Liao Yang,Mao Hui

Heterogeneous Pd catalysts were developed by immobilizing Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) onto plant polyphenol (bayberry tannin, BT) decorated γ-Al 2 O 3 . The abundant hydroxyls of plant polyphenols were capable of stabilizing the Pd NPs. Transmission electron microscopy observation confirmed that the Pd NPs with the diameter of 3.75 ± 0.5 nm were highly dispersed in the catalyst. The as-prepared Al 2 O 3 –BT–Pd catalysts were found to be highly active in mild hydrodechlorination (HDC) of 2,4-dichlorophenols (DCPs) using formic acid as a hydrogen source. The 2,4-DCPs were completely dechlorinated in 4 h at 30°C and under atmospheric pressure. During the catalytic HDC, the stabilizing capability of BT successfully prevented the leakage and aggregation of Pd NPs, thus ensuring a high cycling stability with stable and high catalytic activity. The Al 2 O 3 –BT–Pd catalysts were recycled six times, without obvious loss of activity. In the sixth cycle, the catalytic HDC yield still reached 98.29% under the same reaction conditions, superior to the control catalysts, including γ-Al 2 O 3 supported Pd NPs (Al 2 O 3 –Pd) and powdered activated carbon supported Pd NPs (AC–Pd). Furthermore, the Al 2 O 3 –BT–Pd also showed high activity in the mild catalytic HDC of 2,4,6-trichlorophenols and chlorobenzene derivatives. Our results demonstrated efficient catalysts to address the environmental issue of chlorophenol pollution.

Differential inhibitory effects of organic acids on pear polyphenol oxidase in model systems and pear puree

Tao Liao,Junping Liu,Yuefang Sun,Liqiang Zou,Lei Zhou,Chengmei Liu,Netsanet Shiferaw Terefe,Wei Liu

The inhibitory effects of ascorbic, citric, ferulic and salicylic acid on pear polyphenol oxidase (PPO) were investigated in model and food system. All four organic acids showed strong inhibition effect in model system. However, compared to model system, inhibitory effect of PPO in pear puree was quite different. Ascorbic acid showed a much weaker effect in pear puree compared to the model system. Similarly, ferulic and salicylic acid had limited inhibitory effect in pear puree. Interestingly, the inhibition of PPO activity was not correlated to browning control in pear puree. Ascorbic acid in low concentration was not effective in inhibiting PPO activity in pear puree but exhibited an excellent anti-browning effect. The study indicates that the level of PPO activity is not always a good indicator of susceptibility to browning in foods. Overall, ascorbic acid showed the strongest inhibition of browning and increased the total phenolic content of pear puree.

Nature-inspired polyphenol chemistry to fabricate halloysite nanotubes decorated PVDF membrane for the removal of wastewater

Xi Chen,Yi He,Yi Fan,Guangyong Zeng,Liyun Zhang

The membrane filtration technology is considered as one of the most important approach for removal of hazardous substances from wastewater. Herein, we report a facile surface modification method for preparing a novel membrane via the codepositing tannic acid (TA), polyetheylenimine (PEI), and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The morphologies and chemical compositions of membrane were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating that the membrane was successfully modified by TA/PEI/HNTs. Compared with pristine membrane, the coated membrane shows the improved hydrophilicity and pure water flux (PWF). The membrane modified by TA/PEI/HNTs achieves higher dyes rejection with 90.7%, 92.8% and 96.0% for direct yellow, direct red and direct blue, respectively. Moreover, the treated membrane exhibits excellent anti-fouling performance after several cycles. In addition, removal capacity for heavy metal ion can be enhanced by the as-prepared membrane with introducing the TA/PEI/HNTs coating. This work provides a facile strategy to carry out the hydrophilic modification of membranes. We hope the as-prepared membrane would have some practical applications for wastewater treatment.

Coordination-driven multilayer of phosvitin-polyphenol functional nanofibrous membranes: antioxidant and biomineralization applications for tissue engineering

Hongshan Liang,Bin Zhou,Jing Li,Yaqiong Pei,Bin Li

The layer-by-layer (LBL) deposition technique has been widely used to decorate the nanofibers formed from polymer pairs with complementary functional groups. In the current study, an antioxidative coordination-driven multilayer electrospun nanofibrous film was fabricated from tannic acid (TA) and phosvitin (PV) obtained from egg yolk. PV was reported to bond with 95% of yolk iron which could provide chelating sites for TA. The surface morphology of the nanofibrous mats was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also the TEM image of the cross-section illustrated a uniform shell formed around the cellulose nanofibers. The deposition of TA and PV was further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). TA/PV nanofibrous mats showed good 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity regardless of the outmost component. While for superoxide-scavenging and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity, the outmost component affected the scavenging capacity of nanofibrous mats. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were combined to characterize the morphology and structure of the deposited mineral phase on the scaffolds after culturing in a simulated body fluid (SBF) for 5 days. From the result, the TA/PV nanofibrous mats were satisfactory for use in bioapplications.

Fabrication, characterization, and application of pea protein isolate-polyphenol-iron complexes with antioxidant and antibacterial activity

Wenhan Li,Shuang Han,Hechun Huang,David Julian McClements,Shuai Chen,Cuicui Ma,Xuebo Liu,Fuguo Liu

Plant proteins are becoming increasingly popular as functional ingredients in foods because of their health, sustainability, and environmental benefits. The functional performance of plant proteins can often be improved by combining them with other food ingredients. For instance, they can be combined with polyphenols and metal ions to form surface active protein-polyphenol-iron complexes with biological activity. In this study, ternary complexes of pea protein isolate (PPI), epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and iron (Fe 3+ ) was prepared using a simple molecular self-assembly method. The formation mechanism, characteristics, and functional properties of these complexes were then characterized. Our results showed that PPI, EGCG, and Fe 3+ could spontaneously combine to form nano-sheet networks held together by hydrogen bonds, phenolic hydroxyl coordination bonds, and electrostatic interactions. The addition of Fe 3+ increased the fraction of disordered secondary structures, reduced the thermal denaturation temperature, reduced the surface hydrophobicity, increased the particle size, and altered the surface potential of the proteins in a dose dependent manner. Optimizing the EGCG-to-Fe 3+ ratio in the complexes (1:2 w/w) led to the formation of protein composites with improved surface, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. This study provided valuable insights into the interaction mechanisms of proteins, polyphenols, and metal ions in ternary complexes. These complexes may be used as multifunctional ingredients in plant-based foods because of their beneficial antioxidant, antimicrobial, nutritional, and emulsification properties.

Inhibition of Polyphenol Oxidase Activity by Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles and Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Modified with Surfactants

Xiaonan Fan,Xin Xu,Shuhuai Xia,Yanrong Cheng,Xia Guo

Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is the culprit behind the browning of fruits and vegetables. Therefore, how to reduce the thermal deactivation temperature of PPO or use as few safe reagents as possible to inhibit enzymatic browning has practical significance. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are stable and have high biosafety. In the present study, efficient PPO inhibitors were developed based on MSNs and MWCNTs. It is found that after modification with a very small amount of dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB, ≥60 μg/mL), MSNs can significantly inhibit the activity of PPO although single MSNs and single DTAB show very limited effect on PPO activity. After modification with a very small amount of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, 5.7–9.5 μg/mL), MWCNTs almost completely inactivate PPO. However, SDS@MSN and DTAB@MWCNT cannot decrease PPO activity significantly.

In Vivo Tissue Distribution and Pharmacokinetics of FITC-Labelled Hizikia fusiforme Polyphenol–Polysaccharide Complex in Mice

Yutong Li,Shangkun Li,Di Li,Yuan Gao,Shuhua Kong,Jingyi Liu,Shu Liu,Yichao Ma,Hui Zhou,Dandan Ren,Qiukuan Wang,Yunhai He

In this study, a quantitative method based on fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelledHizikia fusiformepolyphenol–polysaccharide complex (HPC) and its purified fractions (PC1, PC4) was used, and its pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution were investigated in mice. The results showed that the FITC-labelled method had good linearity (R2> 0.99), intra-day and inter-day precision (RSD, %) consistently lower than 15%, recovery (93.19–106.54%), and stability (RSD < 15%), which met the basic criteria for pharmacokinetic studies. The pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution results in mice after administration showed that all three sample groups could enter the blood circulation. and HPC-FITC had a longer half-life (T1/2: 26.92 ± 0.76 h) and mean retention time (MRT0–∞: 36.48 h) due to its larger molecular weight. The three groups of samples could be absorbed by the organism in a short time (0.5 h) mainly in the stomach and intestine; the samples could be detected in the urine after 2 h of administration indicating strong renal uptake, and faecal excretion reached its maximum at 12 h. The samples were also detected in the urine after 2 h of administration. This study provides some theoretical basis for the tissue distribution pattern of polyphenol–polysaccharide complex.
