Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit a diverse array of applications in the fields of adsorption, catalysis, sensing, and separation. However, the limited water stability of MOFs poses challenges in the separation domain, particularly due to the structural similarities among water-soluble nucleoside compounds, which complicate the selective adsorptive separation of these compounds from complex mixtures. In this study, hydrophilic flower-like zirconium-based MOF nanosheets (Zr-FNSs) were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The investigation focused on their adsorption capacity and the mechanism of action, with respect to various nucleosides. Adsorption experiments were conducted under varying pH conditions to identify the optimal pH and to assess the influence of phosphate number on the adsorption of adenosine compounds. The kinetic adsorption capacities of Zr-FNSs for adenosine monophosphate (AMP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were determined to be 254.81, 211.35, and 182.97 μmol g–1, respectively, demonstrating a gradient decrease that may be attributed to increased spatial resistance or a limited number of available adsorption sites. Zr-FNSs have excellent regenerative properties. This work underscores the significance of functional group interactions in the selective adsorption of nucleoside and provides valuable insights for the design of MOF-based adsorbents for the selective separation and purification of nucleoside.

In this study, Rh supported on SiO2 was modified with Zr for the first time to investigate its catalytic performance in propylene hydroformylation. The RhZr/SiO2 catalyst exhibits a butyraldehyde selectivity of over 90% along with a 2.7-fold enhancement in propylene conversion compared to the unmodified catalyst, outperforming previously reported Co- and K-promoted systems. XPS characterization, combined with differential charge density calculations and Bader charge analysis, revealed that the introduction of Zr reduced the electron density around Rh, which facilitates CO adsorption on Rh and thereby promotes the formation of more active HRh(CO)x species. This conclusion is further supported by CO adsorption energy calculations. Under optimized reaction conditions (20 mL toluene solvent, 0.4 g RhZr/SiO2 catalyst with ultralow Rh loading of 0.02 wt%, 1.5 g propene, 100 °C, 4 MPa syngas pressure, 4 h), the catalytic system achieved remarkable performance: 75.1% propene conversion, 96.7% butyraldehyde selectivity, and a normal/iso (n/i) ratio of 0.9. Notably, the system exhibited an exceptional intrinsic activity (TOF = 8838 h−1), surpassing all reported ligand-free heterogeneous Rh-based catalysts in recent years. The present work provides an effective strategy for designing modified Rh-based heterogeneous catalysts with ultralow metal loading for hydroformylation applications.

In this study, Ag@NU-66 core-shell composites were synthesized by coating silver nanospheres with the metal organic framework (MOF)-UiO-66-NH₂ (Zr) using a straightforward hydrothermal technique. The resulting composite combines excellent stability, high enrichment capacity, and photocatalytic properties. As a SERS substrate, Ag@NU-66 effectively detected a range of harmful contaminants, with detection limits as low as 10 −9 M, 10 −8 M, and 10 −9 M for methylene blue, rhodamine 6G, and thiram, respectively. In addition, Ag@NU-66 exhibited efficient removal of these pollutants under simulated solar light photocatalysis. The dual functionality of the composite can be attributed to the enhanced electromagnetic field created by the plasmonic properties of silver nanospheres, along with improved charge transfer facilitated by the adsorption capabilities of UiO-66-NH₂. Furthermore, the Ag@NU-66 composites demonstrated superior stability compared to bare silver nanospheres in various solvents, even in oxidative conditions containing halide ions. These findings support the potential development of Ag@NU-66-based sensing and pollutant removal systems for environmental applications.

Magnetoelectric (ME) ceramic composites of CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) and Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PZT) with varied composition ratios were sintered using a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The characterization of the ceramic compositions and morphologies revealed an even distribution of the CFO and PZT phases. Physical property measurements showed that when the CFO mass percent increased from 8% to 15%, the piezoelectric constant and dielectric constant decreased monotonously, while the saturation magnetization and dielectric loss were enhanced. It was determined that a CFO mass percent of 10% or less resulted in a significant change of the polarization behaviour and a clear enhancement of the ME conversion voltage coefficient ( α E ) with an applied magnetic field . In contrast, CFO mass percentages greater than 10% had a reduced α E , and their polarization behaviour was not influenced by an applied magnetic field. With an increasing proportion of CFO in the composite, the α E first increased and then decreased. The maximum value of the α E indicated an optimal proportion of CFO (10%), which is attributed to a competition between the improved magnetostriction and deteriorating electric behaviour in the composite with the addition of CFO.

The substitution of green hydrogen donors for replacing high-pressure H2 to achieve biomass derived ketone and aldehyde hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) under mild conditions has attracted widespread attention. However, it remains a considerable challenge to get rid of acid additives and control product selectivity. Herein, a series of bimetallic Pd–M/HZSM-5 catalysts (M = Zr, Mn, Zn, or La) were fabricated for controlled hydrodeoxygenation of biobased ketones and aldehydes (acetophenone, benzophenone, 4-hydroxyacetophenone, vanillin, furfural) using polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as the green H-donor, in which >99% conversion and >99% selectivity to ethylbenzene were achieved for hydrodeoxygenation of acetophenone as the probe within 3 h at 35 °C over the as-prepared 0.5%Pd–2.0%Zr/HZSM-5 catalyst with a Pd/Zr mass ratio of 1:4. According to characterizations of TEM-HAADF, XPS, ESR, and H2-TPR, the Pd–Zr alloy structure was formed on the bimetallic Pd–Zr/HZSM-5 catalyst, promoting the transform of Pd–O–Zr solid solution to PdO–ZrO2 and the generation of oxygen vacancy. Moreover, the abundant of oxygen vacancies on the alloyed Pd–Zr/HZSM-5 catalysts enhance the dissociation of silanes to provide the abundance of hydrogen protons, greatly accelerating the hydrogenation of biobased ketones and aldehydes, and then the acid site of the Pd–Zr/HZSM-5 catalyst promotes the dehydration of the intermediates (alcohols) to hydrocarbons. Furthermore, the as-fabricated Pd–Zr/HZSM-5 alloy catalyst can achieve an excellent recycling capability after six uses and exhibits universality toward various biobased ketones and aldehydes at 35 °C. The present findings provide new insights into the design of selective HDO of biomass in a green process.

Sepsis is a life-threatening inflammatory syndrome caused by bacterial infections, with limited therapeutic options in critical care. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria triggers sepsis by activating toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) through myeloid differentiation protein-2 (MD-2) binding. The phosphate groups in LPS serve as key recognition elements for this interaction. This study developed a zirconium/cerium (Zr/Ce) dual-metal nanozyme with phosphatase activity that catalyzes LPS dephosphorylation, disrupting LPS–TLR4 binding to inhibit NF-κB signaling and reduce inflammation. The nanozyme incorporated l-arginine and tannic acid (TA) to enhance the LPS binding capacity, while TA modification improved the antioxidant capability, constructing a multifunctional TA-Zr/Ce nanozyme. Results show that the nanozyme effectively catalyzes LPS dephosphorylation and suppresses inflammatory cytokine release from macrophages. In septic mice, TA-Zr/Ce treatment improved organ function, reduced systemic inflammation, and increased survival rates while promoting anti-inflammatory M2 macrophage polarization. Furthermore, this study constructed a regenerated cellulose microsphere (RCM)-based hemoperfusion system for loading nanozymes and efficiently removing LPS from blood, demonstrating strong clinical translation potential. Therefore, this research provides additional approaches and tools for the clinical management of sepsis.

Novel cross-flow disturbance of ceramic membrane was used for the first time to enhance the adsorption of highly toxic Cu(II) onto Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs). Effects of temperature and pH were investigated on the adsorption process of Cu(II) onto the MOFs using the jar test. The results showed that the MOFs can well adsorb Cu(II) (59.8 mg g–1) at a pH of 6 and a temperature of 40 °C. On the basis of this, the MOFs were then added into a novel cross-flow ceramic membrane filtration system. Effects of the operation temperature and membrane pore size were also investigated on the adsorption process. The results showed that Zr-MOFs adsorption of Cu(II) increased with temperature. The ceramic membrane with a pore size of 200 nm exhibited better Cu(II) removal and membrane flux than did the 50 nm membrane, as well as better kinetic data fit of the pseudo-second-order model. With the aid of cross-flow disturbance of ceramic membrane, the capacity was incredibly increased to 988.2 mg g–1 at a pH of 6, temperature of 40 °C, cross-flow velocity of 4.5 m s–1, and trans-membrane pressure of 0.05 MPa. The principal advantages of this method are a significant enhancement of adsorption onto the Zr-MOFs in the removal of Cu(II) and convenient application in the continuous treatment of heavy metal wastewater. This can be used as an effective method in continuous adsorptive removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

Sr–Zr co-doped multiferroic BiFeO 3 powders are synthesized using sol–gel technique. The effect of Sr–Zr co-doping on the structural, magnetic and optical properties is investigated. X-ray diffraction demonstrates that the crystal structure transforms and there is no impurity phases present even in a high doping concentration. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicate that the Sr–Zr co-doping leads to a decrease in particle size with the Bi 0.80 Sr 0.20 Fe 0.95 Zr 0.05 sample having a particle size of 20–50 nm. With the Sr–Zr co-doping, the nanopowders change to be soft ferromagnetic from antiferromagnetic. The room-temperature remnant magnetization is enhanced by the co-doping, from 0.015 emu/g for the pure BiFeO 3 to 0.237 emu/g for the Bi 0.80 Sr 0.20 Fe 0.95 Zr 0.05 sample. The optical band gap shows an increasing trend with co-doping.

In this study, a Cr2O3 nanosheet (Cr2O3 NS) inserted Cr-Zr-O coating was developed as a hydrogen isotope permeation barrier. The Cr2O3 NSs, fabricated by rapid heat treatment, were amorphous with a thickness of only several nanometers. These Cr2O3 NSs were then incorporated into a Cr-Zr-O multi-metal oxide composite coating via a dip-coating method to form a coating. The effect of the Cr2O3 NS concentration on the morphology, microstructure and deuterium permeation resistance of the coating was studied. With the addition of 1.0 g l−1 Cr2O3 NSs, compared with the Cr-Zr-O coating without NSs, the permeation reduction factor of the resultant coating was enhanced from 249 °C to 575 °C at 500 °C. The coating, with a thickness of nearly 193 nm, achieved a comparable deuterium resistance that was above two orders of magnitude higher than the steel substrate. The results show that ceramic NSs can serve as effective fillers for enhancing the coating performance when functioning as a hydrogen isotope barrier.

Selective hydrogenation of the conjugated carbon–carbon double bond (C═C) and carbon–oxygen bond (C═O) is an important reaction in organic synthesis, which not only provides access to key intermediates in natural product synthesis but also serves as a probe reaction for the evaluation of catalyst reactivity. However, the higher activation energy of the C═O bond over the C═C bond renders its reduction more challenging. In this work, we report a tailored zirconium (Zr)-doped zeolite catalyst featuring integrated Lewis and Brønsted acid sites for the selective transfer hydrogenation of the C═O bond of cinnamaldehyde (CAL) followed by etherification to yield 1-cinnamyl 2-propyl ether (CPE). A series of Zr catalysts supported on different zeolites were prepared and characterized. Among them, Zr-doped mesoporous SBA-15 (Zr/SBA-15) exhibited the highest reactivity, achieving complete conversion of CAL and 99% yield of CPE at 140 ° C in 7 h. Mechanistic studies revealed that balanced Lewis/Brønsted acid sites were key to the reaction, where Lewis acid sites primarily catalyzed the transfer hydrogenation of CAL to cinnamyl alcohol (COL), while Brønsted acid sites promoted the subsequent esterification of COL to CPE. The current work not only establishes an efficient one-pot approach for the synthesis of allyl ethers from α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds but also provides insights into tuning catalyst reactivity through support modification, which would benefit both fundamental research and industrial production.

Enrofloxacin, as one of the specialized fluoroquinolone antibiotics, has become a typical “emerging” pollutant in aqueous environment because of its great stability and resistance to degradation. Therefore, it is important to find an effective method to remove it from aqueous solution. In order to check the presence of synergies between UiO-66 and MWCNTs on removal of enrofloxacin from aqueous solution, a composite material, known as UiO-66/MWCNTs, was synthesized by using hydrothermal method. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized composite were characterized by using methods such as XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, FT-IR, SEM and XPS. The results revealed that UiO-66/MWCNTs has large specific surface area (837.56 m 2 /g) and high porosity, as well as rich functional groups (C = C, –OH, –COOH). Factors such as contact time, initial concentration, temperature, pH, and ionic strength were considered to test the adsorption performance of pristine MWCNTs, pristine UiO-66 and UiO-66/MWCNTs composite for enrofloxacin. The results showed that the UiO-66/MWCNTs composite has a higher adsorption capacity at basic condition and the maximum adsorption capacities of enrofloxacin on composite was improved from 67.8 mg/g for MWCNTs and 92.8 mg/g for UiO-66 to 134.2 mg/g due to its higher adsorption active sites. The adsorption kinetics studies implied that the adsorption of enrofloxacin onto the studied sorbents involves in physio-chemical interactions and is an intra-particle diffusion controlling process. The isothermal experimental data were compatible with both Langmuir and Freundlich models, suggesting heterogeneous adsorption was the dominant during the course of adsorption. Additionally, the thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption of enrofloxacin on UiO-66/MWCNTs was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Finally, in combination with XPS analysis, the adsorption mechanism of enrofloxacin on UiO-66/MWCNTs was clarified to be the synergetic effect of chemical adsorption, hydrogen bond and π-π interaction. This work provides a new strategy for the removal of drugs from aqueous environment.
