Core-shell nanostructures have attracted the interest of many researchers due to their unique structural features and suitable band structure match. However, the fabricated core-shell nanostructures generally have only one core, which makes it challenging to explore the collective effect of multiple cores. Herein, two kinds of multicore-shell Au@ZIF-8 and Au@ZnO were synthesized, focusing on the effect of Au concentration on the optical and photocatalytic properties of the latter. By controlling the concentration of Au precursor, different quantities of Au NPs can be encapsulated in one ZIF-8 nanocrystal. Consequently, the hybridization effect and its localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Au NPs could also be accordingly regulated, with Au-0.4@ZnO showing the best photocatalytic activity. This work offers a new inspiration on regulating the plasmonic properties of the multicore-shell nanostructure, which holds an appealing prospect in plasmonic photocatalysis, surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection, and intermediates identification in catalytic reactions.

The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) serves as a critical determinant of the energy conversion efficiency within direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Consequently, the development of cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts is paramount for enhancing energy conversion efficiency associated with MOR. The nanomaterials with diverse metal atomic molar ratio of (Ni:W) were synthesized via hydrothermal method for the immobilization of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) onto the sample surface. The crystal structure of nanocomposites was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images depicted a specific surface topography. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts in the MOR was assessed through electrochemical analysis. Notably, catalyst with the Ni:W atomic ratio of 2:1, displayed superior electrocatalytic performance when compared to catalysts possessing other different metal ratios. Moreover, chronoamperometry tests conducted over 7200 s and Tafel slope analysis demonstrated the enduring activity and strong resistance to toxicity of the synthesized catalysts. These results highlight the potential of nickel-tungstate bimetallic oxide as an exceptionally efficient catalyst in the field of electrocatalysis.

Amine ligands have been widely applied as morphology-directing reagents in nanostructure synthesis. In this work, we explored the application of the amine ligands in the active surface growth mechanism in place of the strong thiolated ligands. Despite being weaker compared to the thiols, amine ligands such as aniline were also shown to be capable of facilitating the template-less electrodeposition of Au nanowires (NWs) on the substrate via the active surface growth mechanism. Given the close binding difference between the amine-grafted substrate and the ligands, substrate functionalization becomes critically important for effective construction of the active surface and the growth of the nanowires. Additionally, the growth with the amine ligands took place at more positive reduction potentials and is less prone to splitting and bundle formation. A systematic generality study revealed that besides the aromatic amines, long-chain aliphatic amines were also capable of facilitating nanowire growth. Given the weak binding affinity of the amine ligands, the Au NWs are readily accessible for further processing to generate sophisticated one-dimensional structures. As a demonstration, tandem electrodeposition was performed to directly obtain coaxial core–shell Au@Pt NWs with adjustable length, diameter, and shell thickness.

A novel water-soluble silsesquioxane precursor (DEA-GSQ) was prepared by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of diethanolamine (DEA) with glycidyloxypropyl substituted silsesquioxane (GSQ). DEA-GSQ can be used to crosslink chitosan to prepare hybrid aerogels (DGCA). The hybrid aerogels were fully characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, compression performance test and Mercury intrusion porosimetry. The hybrid aerogel shows selective adsorption for Au(III) with the saturated adsorption capacity of 918.16 mg/g at pH = 6. Pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model could describe the adsorption process well. It was found that Au(III) was mostly reduced to Au(0) by C N bond during the adsorption process. Furthermore, an adsorption device was designed to remove Au(III) based on this hybrid aerogel, laying the foundation for the adsorption of Au(III) in practical applications.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), as one of the most powerful analytical methods, undertakes important inspection tasks in various fields. Generally, the performance of an SERS-active substrate relies heavily on its structure, which makes it difficult to integrate multiple-functional detectability on the same substrate. To address this problem, here we designed and constructed a film of graphene/Au nanoparticles (G/Au film) through a simple method, which can be conveniently transferred to different substrates to form various composite SERS substrates subsequently. By means of the combination of the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism (EM) and the chemical enhancement mechanism (CM) of this structure, the film realized good SERS performance experimentally, with the enhancement factor (EF) approaching ca. 1.40 × 105. In addition, the G/Au film had high mechanical strength and had large specific surface area and good biocompatibility that is beneficial for Raman detection. By further transferring the film to an Ag/Si composite substrate and PDMS flexible film, it showed enhanced sensitivity and in situ detectability, respectively, indicating high compatibility and promising prospect in Raman detection.

Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in noble-metal nanostructures is a powerful strategy for enhancing upconversion (UC) emission from rare-earth-dopants. Herein, we present a distance-engineered Au–NaYF 4 core shell (CS) platform that selectively amplifies multicolor UC emission by jointly tuning the diameter of Au nanoparticles (NPs) and the thickness of an inert NaYF 4 spacer. Under 980 nm excitation, 56 nm Au NPs generate optimal near-field enhancement, yielding 6.82-fold (Er 3 + , 654 nm) and 5.61-fold (Tm 3+ , 450 nm) increases, respectively, in comparison to NaYF 4 : 20 %Yb 3+ /2 %Ho 3+ @NaYbF 4 : 2 %Er 3+ and NaYF 4 : 20 %Yb 3+ /2 %Ho 3+ @NaYbF 4 : 2 %Er 3+ @NaYF 4 : 20 %Yb 3+ /2 %Tm 3+ CS NPs. Power- dependent and time-resolved measurements attribute the gain to excitation-rate enhancement–an increased Yb 3+ absorption cross section–with negligible modulation of radiative rates. Finite-element simulations reveal intense gap “hot spots” for 56 nm Au NPs that account for the optimum. These results establish a simple distance–size design rule for spectrally selective, intensity-tunable UC emission, enabling compact plasmonic platforms for bioimaging, anti-counterfeiting and nanoscale optoelectronics.

Arsenopyrite, a significant natural Au-host mineral, is often intergrown with sulfide minerals, complicating its isolation. Synthesizing high-purity, dense Au-bearing arsenopyrite is essential for studying its properties. This study employed hot-press sintering (with optimal conditions identified at 450°C and 1.0 GPa) using purified arsenopyrite and Au powders to fabricate conductive, dense Au-bearing arsenopyrite. The sintered product exhibited high purity and increased density (6.259 ± 0.021 g/cm 3 vs. the original 5.923 ± 0.037 g/cm3). Electrochemical testing (via open-circuit potential and cyclic voltammetry) demonstrated favorable performance of the synthesized material. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed phase stability under 0–10 GPa, revealing that Au preferentially substitutes for Fe in arsenopyrite, introducing gap states that convert it from a semiconductor (indirect bandgap: 0.7075 eV) to a conductor. Bader charge analysis indicated Au carries a negative charge (-0.056 e), while As exhibits positive charges. Fe was identified as the most reactive site. These results provide a high-purity material platform for studying Au-bearing arsenopyrite and a theoretical basis for elucidating its properties.

In this paper, Au-Ag alloy nanostar (Au-Ag NSt) substrates were prepared by liquid–liquid three-phase self-assembly method, and the influence of preparation conditions on their Raman activity of the substrate was explored. By adjusting the gold-silver ratios of alloy seeds and the concentration of AgNO 3 in the growth solution, it was found that the LSPR peak can be adjusted. Under the conditions of Au 1 -Ag 3 nanoparticles as seeds and 200 μL AgNO 3 solution (2 mM) as epitaxial growth solution, the prepared Au 1 -Ag 3 NSt substrate exhibits excellent SERS activity. The substrate can detect R6G and CV probe molecules with detection limits as low as 10 −11 M and 10 −10 M, respectively. Experiments have confirmed that the substrate has the characteristics of high sensitivity, good uniformity and strong stability. In addition, the substrate can detect APM molecules far below the safety standard, which further proves that the structure has excellent practical application potential as a SERS substrate.

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains have become an ever-increasing public concern due to their significant threats to health safety. Nanomaterial-based photothermal treatment has shown potential in antibacterial applications, but many nanomaterials exhibited limited photothermal activity that may compromise their antibacterial efficacies. Herein, we report a novel strategy based on efficient photothermal ablation and physical contact over a supported nanostructure by loading Au nanoparticles (NPs) on few-layered Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (NSs) for antibacterial treatment. Ti3C2Tx NSs are delaminated via etching and sonication, and act as a reductant for the in situ reduction of HAuCl4·xH2O, producing “naked” Au NPs without any stabilizers. Meanwhile, by adjusting the Au/Ti ratio, the size and loading of the Au NPs are finely regulated, thereby providing an ideal model of a surface-clean Au@Ti3C2Tx heterostructure for probing the composition–performance relationship. Upon irradiation with visible light, it exhibits synergistically enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency and stability, owing to the localized surface plasmonic resonance effect of Au NP and Au–NS interactions. Moreover, under visible light irradiation for 10 min, the Au@ Ti3C2Tx heterostructure exhibits excellent antibacterial activity for Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli, and kills over 99% bacteria with a low dose of the nanomedicine suspension (50 μg mL−1). The work demonstrates that the incorporation of transition metal carbides with plasmonic metal nanostructures is an effective strategy to enhance the photothermal antibacterial efficacy.

In this work, an ultrasensitive and selective electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor with Au-tetrahedral aptamer nanostructure (Au-TAN) for acetamiprid detection was developed, which employed luminescence property of luminol and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) as a co-reactant to apply the prepared Au-TAN to the luminescence systems. Au-TAN was prepared to modify an electrode surface via an Au-S bond to form a stable tetrahedral nanostructure. Fixed on the surface of the working electrode, Au-TAN could not only enhance the function of the aptamer but also boost the sensing performance. At the same time, Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) of the Au-TAN could also catalyze H 2 O 2 , thereby enhancing the luminescence performance of this aptasensor. The pH of the buffer solution, the concentration of H 2 O 2 and the concentration of Au-TAN were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the aptasensor had a detection limit of 0.0576 pM (S/N = 3), which was lower than those of other aptasensors for acetamiprid detection. Moreover, the weak alkaline environment explored in the experiment could expand its application range. Above all, the proposed method presented a high accuracy and sensitivity.

Evidence had accumulated that serotonin (5-HT), a hormone and neurotransmitter, was not only involved in a variety of different physiological and central nervous system functions but also in the development and manifestation of psychiatric diseases. Here, DNA tetrahedron-Au NPs-GO for enhanced fluorescence sensor was designed for detecting serotonin. Au NPs-GO was used as a fluorescence quencher, while fluorophore-labeled DNA tetrahedron was used as a donor, resulting in fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) from the fluorophore to Au NPs-GO (signal off). With the strong binding ability of aptamer to serotonin, S5 was released from Aptamer: S5 duplex, then reacted with the tail of DNA tetrahedron (DTNs), followed by the formation of three double stranded DNA products in the tail of DTNs, bringing in signal readout responses (signal on). Consequently, a reliable, sensitive and selective sensor was obtained for one-step quantificative detection of serotonin from 50 pM to 200 nM with a detection limit of 16.8 pM. Furthermore, satisfactory stability, reproducibility, specificity and good recovery efficiency in human serum samples revealed that the proposed sensor could be served as a prospective tool for serotonin detection.

Metal-based drugs have been used for decades to treat solid cancers; however, these drugs have no significant therapeutic effect on glioma because they cannot effectively cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB). To develop a novel metal-based agent that can cross the BBB to target glioma, we synthesized an Au complex (C2) with remarkable glioma cytotoxicity and fabricated lactoferrin (LF)-C2 nanoparticles (LF-C2 NPs) as a novel therapy. We confirmed that C2 kills glioma cells by inducing apoptosis and autophagic death. The LF-C2 NPs cross the BBB, inhibit glioma growth, and selectively accumulate in the tumor tissue, significantly decreasing the side effects of C2. This study provides a novel strategy for applying metal-based agents to targeted therapy for glioma.
