The hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets modified by silane coupling agent (KH560) were doped into acrylic acid coating on the surface of galvanized steel to improve its corrosion resistance. H-BN nanosheets modified by KH560 were prepared and characterised by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of the acrylic acid coatings was measured by electrochemical testing. The results show that the corrosion current density of the coating with modified h-BN nanosheets was reduced from 2.2 × 10−5A/cm2to 2.3 × 10−7A/cm2compared with the acrylic acid coating. The impedance of the composite coating with modified h-BN is 4435 Ω·cm2, higher than the BNNS coating (2500 Ω·cm2) and the acrylic acid coating (1500 Ω·cm2). This is due to the physical barrier and electrical insulation properties of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets.Keywords:hot-dip galvanized steel;boron nitride nanosheet;corrosion resistance;acrylic coating

Although pure silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) aerogels have unique properties of low density and high temperature resistance, they are still difficult to apply at a large scale due to brittleness. To overcome this drawback, a strong boron nitride/silicon oxycarbide (BN/SiOC) aerogel composite with high-temperature resistance and thermal insulation was prepared by the sol-gel method and pyrolysis of the precursor aerogel. The microstructural, mechanical and thermal insulation properties of the composites were investigated, and the effect of the BN content on the microstructure and properties was also clarified. The results indicate that the obtained mesoporous composites exhibit low thermal conductivity (0.04–0.20 Wm −1 K −1 ) and high-temperature resistance (∼1300 °C). As the BN content increased from 0 to 15 vol %, the compressive strength of the composites increased from 2.2 to 20.3 MPa. The obtained composites exhibit considerable promise in high-temperature thermal insulation applications.

The increasing demand for effective thermal management in electronic devices has highlighted the crucial importance of researching composite materials with exceptional thermal conductivity in the field of electronics. A novel hybrid filler consisting of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) and needle-like zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) was designed and synthesized in this work, then used to prepare thermally conductive composites by mixing it with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using the ice template method and hot-pressing process. The results demonstrated that a filler loading of 20 wt% yielded the highest thermal conductivity for the composite, reaching an impressive in-plane thermal conductivity of 1.77 Wm −1 k −1 , which was 3.4 times higher than that of the conventional frozen pure PVA. This substantial improvement in thermal conductivity is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect achieved through the ice template method to construct a conventional orientation structure combined with the presence of BN-ZnO NWs hybrid filler. In addition, this composite also has good mechanical properties and thermal stability, etc. Our study shows that the BN-ZnO NWs/PVA thermally conductive composite demonstrates excellent potential as a thermal interface material for various applications in the field of thermal management of electronic devices.

The synergistic effect of different types of solid particles in liquid lubricants is of great interest. In this work, g-C3N4nanosheets were initially prepared using a calcination method and then as-prepared, and h-BN were used as lubricating additives to the white oil. A comparison between the mixed additives and the single g-C3N4or h-BN additives revealed that the base oil with the addition of g-C3N4and h-BN showed the best lubricating properties. The results show a 12.3% reduction in friction coefficient, resulting in a 68.6% reduction in wear rate compared to the white oil when filled with 0.5 wt% g-C3N4and h-BN (1:1 by weight). Moreover, the addition of g-C3N4and h-BN improves the high-temperature lubrication properties of the white oil. However, the friction coefficient and wear rate increase with increasing oil temperature. The large contact area between g-C3N4and its sliding counterpart and the strong adhesive force between h-BN and its sliding counterpart improve the film formation efficiency, leading to enhanced tribological properties under oil lubrication conditions.

High-performance energy storage materials are of essential importance in advanced electronics and pulsed power systems, and the polymer dielectrics have been considered as a promising energy storage material, because of its higher dielectric strength and more excellent flexibility compared with that of inorganic ceramic dielectrics. However, the energy storage capability of pristine polymer has been limited by its low intrinsic dielectric permittivity and ordinary ferroelectric performance. Herein, this work demonstrates a favorable method to achieve a sandwich-structured poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composite by the electrospinning, solution casting, thermal quenching, and hot-pressing process. This innovative method combines with the 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 nanofibers (BZT-BCT NFs), which possesses good ferroelectric hysteresis, and the hybrid particles of hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) coated by ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4@BNNSs), which hold high breakdown strength (Eb). It is worth mentioning that the Fe3O4 particles disperse well on the surface of BNNSs to form the dipoles with the BNNSs at the interfacial region, resulting in an enhancement of the electric displacement and the dielectric permittivity of the composite. Furthermore, the influence of the volume fraction of filler particles on the electrical performance of composite was systematically investigated. Notably, the enhanced performance in terms of electric displacement (D), Eb, and discharged energy density (Ue) was achieved in the sandwiched BZT-BCT NFs-PVDF/Fe3O4@BNNSs-PVDF/BZT-BCT NFs-PVDF composite. The Ue of ∼8.9 J/cm3 was achieved at 350 kV/mm, which was 740% higher than the Ue of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP, Ue ≈ 1.2 J/cm3 at 640 kV/mm). Of particular note is that the hybrids Fe3O4@BNNSs play a critical role to enhance the D and Eb and suppress the remnant displacement (Dr) of sandwiched composite. This contribution proposes an efficient and scalable method to prepare polymer-based dielectric composite for the demanded applications.

Paraffin was encapsulated in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/BN/TiO2 hybrid shell to obtain a novel phase change material (PCM) microcapsule for latent-heat storage. Scanning electron microscope micrographs showed that the resultant composite PCMs exhibited a nearly spherical morphology with a size of 10–20 μm and BN/TiO2 nanoparticles were tightly embedded on the microcapsule surface. The results of thermogravimetric analysis and thermal conductivity test demonstrated that the PMMA/BN/TiO2 composite shell gave the microencapsulated paraffin an excellent thermal performance. Compared to pure paraffin, the thermal conductivity of microcapsules could significantly be enhanced by 117.0%, and the maximum decomposing temperature has an increase of 25.4 °C. The analysis of differential scanning calorimetry and thermal reliability test indicated that the composite PCMs also presented good heat storage capacity and high thermal reliability for latent-heat storage and release. After a heating–cooling cycle test was repeated 100 times, the composite microcapsule still showed a similar phase change performance as before, which can be attributed to the protective effect of PMMA/BN/TiO2 hybrid shell. With increased demands for economical and high-performance renewed energy storage materials, the prepared composite PCMs show great potential applications in thermal energy storage.

Epoxy composites, with boron nitride spheres (s-BN) and flakes (f-BN) as fillers were prepared. The effect of filler morphology, content, and crystallization of BN particles on the thermal conductivity, thermo-mechanical and dielectric properties of the composites were investigated. At the same loading level, s-BN with smaller size and larger surface area led to much more significant increase in the glass transition temperature ( T
g
), reduction in the coefficient of thermal expansion and lower storage modulus ( E ′), while much higher thermal conductivities were observed in epoxy composites containing f-BN, owing to the larger aspect ratio and better crystallization. In addition, the introduction of BN fillers only did slightly increase on the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the epoxy resin. We believe, the BN enhanced epoxy composites, with significantly improved thermal conductivity and thermo-mechanical properties, yet maintaining low dielectric constant and dielectric loss at the same time, have great application potential in the microelectronic insulation industry.

A moisture- and air-stable palladium(II)-Schiff base complex supported on h-BN was simply prepared by using commercially available reagents. This nanomaterial was applied as an excellent and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for the Suzuki and Heck cross-coupling reactions. And it has been characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, XPS , TG and ICP-AES techniques. High yields, ligand-free, low reaction time, water as solvent, non-toxicity and recyclability of the catalyst are the main merits of these protocols. In addition, a series of pharmacologically relevant products were successfully synthesized using this catalyst. Above all, this work opens up an interesting and attractive avenue for the use of h-BN as an efficient support for heterogeneous catalysts.

Electronic devices play an increasingly vital role in modern society, and heat accumulation is a major concern during device development, which causes strong market demand for thermal conductivity materials and components. In this paper, a novel thermal conductive material consisting of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a binary filler system of h-BN platelets and Al2O3nanoparticles was successfully fabricated using direct ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technology. The addictive manufacturing process not only endows the DIW-printed composites with various geometries but also promotes the construction of a 3D structural thermal conductive network through the shearing force during the printing process. Moreover, the integrity of the thermal conductive network can be optimized by filling the gaps between the BN platelets with Al2O3particles. Resultingly, the configuration of the binary fillers is arranged by the shearing force during the DIW process, fabricating the thermal conductive network of oriented fillers. The DIW-printed BN/Al2O3/PDMS with 45 wt% thermal conductive binary filler can reach a thermal conductivity of 0.98 W/(m·K), higher than the 0.62 W/(m·K) of the control sample. In this study, a novel strategy for the thermal conductive performance improvement of composites based on DIW technology is successfully verified, paving a new way for thermal management.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials with excellent load-bearing and high-temperature resistance have attracted much attention for both civil and military applications. In this regard, mechanically robust (bending strength of 246 ± 15 MPa) C f @BN/(CrZrHfNbTa)C–SiC high-entropy ceramic matrix composite with BN interphase was designed and fabricated in this work for highly EMI shielding performance and high-temperature resistance. As a result of the synergistic effect of multi-components, mean total EMI shielding efficiency (SE T ) of the composite with 3 mm thickness is up to 32.5 dB (higher than 99.9 % EMI shielding) in Ku-band. This indicates that thickness of the BN interphase has a remarkable effect on EMI shielding performance, indicating that the absorption coefficient ( A ) increases gradually with increasing BN thickness. The EMI shielding performance exhibit excellent high-temperature stability in an oxidation environment. Even after multiple high temperature oxidations in the temperature range of 400–800 °C, the composite remains outstanding EMI shielding performance. This study provides a structural and functional integrated EMI shielding material with a potential long service life at high temperatures.

Exploring green methods for removing organic pollutants from water bodies has attracted significant attention. In this research, N-ZnO/p-BN adsorption-photocatalytic composites were prepared by a simple solvothermal method, and various analytical characterizations confirmed the formation of B-O-Zn bonds at the heterojunction interface that facilitated the separation of photogenerated carriers and revealed a type-II mechanism of charge transfer in the heterostructure. The photodegradation efficiency for oxytetracycline (OTC) by composites with different N-ZnO loadings was investigated under simulated sunlight, and the degradation efficiency of the optimal sample (50 wt% N-ZnO/p-BN) for 50 mg/L OTC reached 92.2 % at 120 min. Efficient pollutant enrichment, broadened light absorption range, high dispersion of the photocatalysts, and effective charge migration are all important factors for improving photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the photocatalytic process was further investigated, experiments showed that the N-ZnO/p-BN composites were universally applicable under a variety of conditions and possessed the characteristics of low dosage and high degradable concentration. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed for the degradation system and the degradation pathways of the main degradation model OTC were analyzed and deduced. Therefore, this study provides new ideas for designing high-performance adsorption-photocatalytic composites.

To evaluate the barrier properties of the composite coatings reinforced by PDA (polydopamine)-BN@ZnO nano-pigments, the correlation between electrolyte transport characteristics and different nano-pigment contents in the composite coatings was studied. The electrochemical response of composite coatings was mainly controlled by non-Faraday process. A two-layer model based on Young's impedance was established to fit the non-Faraday process of the composite coatings from the 6th day of immersion. The coating resistivity varying with electrolyte transport could be used as a key parameter to describe the barrier properties of the coatings. At the same time, the explanation that different contents of nano-pigments enhance or weaken the barrier performance of composite coatings was given, that is, the nanoconfinement effect of the polymer under the effect of nano-pigments.
