Tailoring Actuated Performance of Ti3C2Tx MXene/Fluorosilicone Rubber Composites via Controlling BaTiO3 Particle Size and Content

Yu Zeng,Lu Tang,Fangfang Guo

Fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) has emerged as a promising matrix for actuator composites, while the trade-off between dielectric performance and mechanical robustness restricts its practical applications. Herein, we report a series of FSR/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene composites modified with nano-sized BaTiO 3 (nBT) and micro-sized BaTiO 3 (μBT) to investigate the size-dependent effects of BaTiO 3 on composite performance. Owing to the coordination effect between MXene and BaTiO 3 , uniform dispersion of fillers was achieved, and the composites exhibited thermal stability exceeding 400°C. The FSR/MXene composite with 8 phr (parts per hundred rubber) nBT showed a tensile strength of 486 kPa, elongation at break of 194%, and elastic modulus of 356 kPa, superior to the μBT-modified composite. It also possessed a higher dielectric constant (12.85 at 10 3 Hz) and lower dielectric loss (0.00522) than μBT-modified counterparts, attributed to stronger interfacial polarization and less particle agglomeration. Notably, an actuated strain of 19.58% at 45 kV mm −1 was achieved, 35.7% higher than the μBT-modified composite. This work reveals that BaTiO 3 particle size significantly regulates the synergistic interaction between ceramic particles and conductive MXene, providing a feasible strategy for designing high-performance FSR-based composites toward soft actuator and sensor applications.

Multiscale Regulation of BiFeO3-BaTiO3 Lead-Free Ferroelectric Ceramics for Ultrahigh Piezoelectric Performance and Temperature Stability

Renjun Xu,Yingzhi Meng,Yongbao Cui,Biao Zhang,Bangxian Xie,Hongle Fan,Xiangdong Ding,Changbai Long,Laijun Liu

BiFeO 3 -BaTiO 3 system is considered a promising lead-free candidate for piezoelectric actuators, sensors, and energy-harvesting devices due to its good piezoelectric properties and high Curie temperature. However, achieving synergistic optimization of piezoelectric performance and thermal stability has remained a persistent challenge. Here, we propose a multiscale modulation strategy by precisely controlling Bi excess ( x ) and designing quenching pathways in 0.7Bi (1+ x ) Fe 0.99 Nb 0.01 O 3 -0.3BaTiO 3 ceramics. The results demonstrate that water quenching for sintering in O 2 (O 2 WQ) effectively increases c /a ratio of tetragonal phase and modulates domain configuration and suppressing the concentration of point defects. Bi excess-induced octahedral distortion and valence state modulation of Fe promote the switching of ferroelectric domains. Both enhance piezoelectricity and temperature stability. Remarkably, the x = 0.01 composition with O 2 WQ treatment achieves optimal performance: a room-temperature piezoelectric coefficient d 33 = 236 pC/N, a high Curie temperature T C = 472 °C, an excellent thermal stability across 60-270 °C ( d 33 = 314 ± 47 pC/N), as well as high DC resistivity ρ > 10 6 Ohm·cm at 270 °C. This performance surpasses most reported lead-free piezoelectric systems and confirms the efficacy of our multiscale modulation strategy. This work provides a viable design paradigm for high-performance lead-free piezoelectric ceramics suitable for high-temperature and high-power applications.

Remarkably boosting catalytic performance of BaTiO3-based materials via phase boundary, band-structure and defect engineering

Yina Zheng,Guo Feng,Chao Chen,Meng Chen,Na Tu,Yunjing Chen,Xiangping Jiang,Feng Jiang,Haifeng Lv

BaTiO 3 (BT)-based ferroelectrics are constrained in piezo-photocatalysis by limited polarization tunability at room temperature and their intrinsically high phase-transition temperature. Constructing a multiphase coexistence structure near phase boundaries can effectively lower the energy barrier for polarization rotation, enhance the dynamic piezoelectric response, and facilitate the separation of photogenerated carriers. In this work, a multiphase-regulation strategy is developed via synergistic A-/B-site co-doping to activate the catalytic performance of BT-based materials. A Sr 2+ and Zr 4+ co-doped Ba 0.8 Sr 0.2 Zr 0.15 Ti 0.85 O 3 (BSZ 0.15 T) catalyst was synthesized via a non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) method. The optimized composition exhibits rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T) multiphase coexistence at room temperature. This feature significantly enhances polarization rotation and the piezoelectric response, thereby improving the efficiency of charge-carrier separation and transport. Under simultaneous ultraviolet irradiation and ultrasonic excitation, BSZ 0.15 T achieves a degradation efficiency of 99.5% for RhB degradation, with a rate constant k of 9.554 × 10 −2 min −1 . Mechanistic investigations reveal that the enhanced performance arises from the synergistic effects of optimized band structure, strengthened built-in electric fields, and tailored oxygen vacancies. Specifically, Zr 4+ incorporation induces a downshift of the conduction band, thereby enhancing the electron reduction capability. This effectively facilitates the reduction of O 2 to generate superoxide radicals (• O 2 − O2− ). Meanwhile, the multiphase coexistence and abundant oxygen vacancies jointly accelerate charge migration and surface redox kinetics. This work provides a new perspective for enhancing the piezo-photocatalytic activity of BT-based materials through the synergistic phase-boundary and defect engineering.

Photocatalytic removal and mechanistic investigation of U(VI) using BaTiO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions with enhanced efficiency

Wei Peng,Xiancai He,Jiangang Li,Xianlin Chen,Zhongsheng Chen,Guolin Huang

With the extensive deployment of nuclear energy, uranium contamination—particularly in the hexavalent form U(VI)—has become an escalating threat to aquatic systems. Photocatalytic reduction has emerged as a green and sustainable strategy for environmental remediation. However, achieving high photocatalytic efficiency and effective solar energy utilization remains a significant challenge. In this study, a series of BaTiO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 (BTO/CN) type-II heterojunction photocatalysts were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method with rational band alignment. The effect of different BTO/CN ratios on U(VI) removal efficiency was evaluated. Among the tested compositions, BaTiO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 -4 exhibited the highest photocatalytic performance, achieving a U(VI) removal efficiency of 96.2% within 20 min of visible light irradiation—significantly outperforming both individual components and other composite ratios. The optimized heterojunction effectively modulated the electronic band structure, facilitating the rapid separation of photogenerated electron-hole (e − -h + ) pairs. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between the heterojunction interface and the intrinsic ferroelectric properties of BaTiO 3 significantly suppressed charge carrier recombination and extended the visible-light absorption range. This, in turn, substantially enhanced the overall photocatalytic efficiency of the system. The rational design of BaTiO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunctions offers a promising strategy and a robust experimental basis for the development of high-efficiency photocatalysts of uranium remediation.

Synergistic grain and interface engineering of nano-BaTiO3 ceramics for ultra-thin MLCCs with high reliability

Wentao Huai,Huizhan He,Zhenhao Cai,Saiwei Luan,Zhouyi Xu,Zhangping Wu,Jun Yang,Jianping Xu,Lei Zhang,Rong Sun

Ultra-thin multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) require nano-sized BaTiO 3 -based ceramics with simultaneously high dielectric performance and reliability, while abnormal grain growth in conventional solid-state processing severely limits further miniaturization. Herein, a synergistic grain and interface engineering integrating pre-coating with two-step sintering is proposed to precisely regulate grain growth and microstructural evolution. As a result, ultrafine-grained BaTiO 3 -based ceramics with a uniform core-shell structure were achieved, exhibiting an average grain size of (131 ± 53) nm, a high relative density of 97.76%, and complete suppression of abnormal grain growth. The optimized ceramics fully satisfy the EIA-X7S specification (ΔC/C 25℃ = ±22%, −55–125 ℃), delivering a dielectric constant of 2177 and a dielectric loss below 0.01 at 25 ℃. Mechanistic investigations reveal that Mg pre-coating regulates elemental diffusion effectively and promotes defect dipole formation 2 Ho Ba · − Mg Ti ′ ′ 2HoBa·−MgTi′′ , thereby confining charge carriers and enhancing electrical stability. Consequently, the corresponding ultra-thin MLCCs exhibit a high breakdown field strength of up to 95 V/μm, demonstrating markedly improved reliability. This work offers a practical and scalable materials design strategy for next-generation ultra-thin MLCCs with high performance.

BiFeO3–BaTiO3 solid solutions with dielectric-screened charge separation for photocatalytic H2 production under visible light

Jinxing Yu,Ri Han,Shu Jin,Xiaoxiang Xu

BiFeO 3 is a narrow-bandgap semiconductor promising for solar water splitting but is generally subject to a low photocatalytic activity due to the poor separation of photocarriers (e − and h + ). In this work, BiFeO 3 has been combined with BaTiO 3 to form the solid solutions (i.e. (BiFeO 3 ) 1-x (BaTiO 3 ) x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)) which demonstrate a much-improved activity for photocatalytic H 2 production under visible light illumination. The solid solution strategy not only tunes the bandgap but also modifies the dielectric constant that is critical for a high photocatalytic activity. A high dielectric constant contributes to an improved photocarrier separation condition due to the screening of the Coulomb interactions between photocarriers and between photocarriers and charged defects. This work reveals a useful solid solution strategy to modify the photocatalytic performance and justifies the importance of dielectric properties for photocarrier separation.

Mechanochemically induced interfacial electronic modulation in MnCe/BaTiO3 for synergistic catalysis for NOx and 2-chlorobenzene

Fan Yao,Ang Cao,Bing Zhou,Shengyong Lu,Jianhua Yan,Damien Debecher,Yaqi Peng

The synergistic removal of NO and chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) using bifunctional catalysts has emerged as a cutting-edge strategy in environmental catalysis. However, achieving both efficient NOx selective catalytic reduction and CVOCs catalytic oxidation remains fundamentally challenging due to the inherent trade-off between activity and selectivity. Herein, we demonstrate that this trade-off can be overcome by applying a mechanochemical strategy coupled with electronic band modulation to construct a novel heterojunction catalyst, in which MnCe oxides are integrated with and piezoelectric BaTiO 3 to form a heterojunction interface. The optimized TB-MnCe catalyst exhibits remarkable synergistic performance, achieving the synergistic removal of o-dichlorobenzene (>80%) and NOx (100%) within a broad temperature range of 250–350 °C. Combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an interfacial charge transfer of approximately 4.6 electrons from BaTiO 3 to MnCe during mechanochemical treatment. This charge redistribution, mediated by the engineered interface, significantly enhances the redox capability of the active sites and promotes cooperative reactions. This work highlights that atomic-level interfacial electronic modulation induced by mechanochemical processing provides a powerful route to resolve the activity-selectivity dilemma in bifunctional catalysis. An ultrasound-activated PLLA@BaTiO3&SF Janus membrane enhances fracture healing via synergistic piezoelectricity and bioactivity

Qinghua Guo,Jiahao Cao,Zixian Yang,Wei Cao,Hongli Chen,Yidi Duan,Xu Wang,Zhen Gong,Xiaolin Liu,Shanshan Fu,Yibin Huang,Yafei Feng,Jing Wang,Weijia Wang,Wei Lei

Ultrasound-activated PLLA@BaTiO 3 &SF Janus membrane for non-invasive fracture therapy • Optimal piezoelectricity achieved by 20 wt% BaTiO 3 doping in PLLA • Hydrophilic and ROS-scavenging SF interface favoring BMSCs adhesion • Enhanced fracture healing via ITGB1-dependent signaling activation Fracture nonunion remains a significant clinical problem, largely due to insufficient mechanistic insight and effective treatments. Piezoelectric materials including polylactic acid (PLA) and barium titanate (BaTiO 3 ), facilitate bone regeneration through electrical stimulation, but their clinical application is constrained by undefined optimal ratio for achieving maximum electrical energy output and concerns regarding biological toxicity. To overcome these drawbacks, we designed a Janus membrane inspired by asymmetric material architecture, featuring a piezoelectric outer layer of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) doped with BaTiO 3 and an inner silk fibroin (SF) layer. Our findings indicate that PLLA containing 20 wt% BaTiO 3 yields optimal electrical output under ultrasound stimulation, while the SF layer provided a hydrophilic and antioxidant interface for bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). The results showed that PLLA@BaTiO 3 &SF Janus membrane significantly enhanced BMSCs adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation, thereby accelerating fracture repair in a mouse femoral fracture model. Mechanistically, ultrasound-activated piezoelectric stimulation triggered PI3K-Akt, MAPK, and TGF-β signaling pathways in an integrin β1 (ITGB1)-dependent manner. Overall, the PLLA@BaTiO 3 &SF Janus membrane integrates noninvasive activation, tunable piezoelectricity and excellent biocompatibility to achieve robust bone regeneration, offering a promising therapeutic strategy for reducing fracture nonunion and improving the quality of life for patients. Design and biomedical applications of a Janus membrane consisting of a piezoelectric PLLA-BaTiO3 outer layer and an SF-based inner layer. This design ultimately effectively enhances the pro-repair behaviors of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and accelerates bone regeneration. Defect-assisted core-shell control in rare-earth-doped BaTiO3 ceramics for high reliability BME MLCCs

Shucheng Liu,Shangchao Chi,Kui Chen,Moke Zhou,Bin Tang

This work investigates the microstructure, defect chemistry, internal stress distribution, and reliability of Y–Yb co-doped BaTiO 3 ceramics, in comparison with Y–Er co-doped counterparts. STEM–EDS reveals stronger grain-boundary segregation of Yb-containing species, forming core–shell structures. GPA further shows that lattice distortion is strongly localized within these dopant-rich shells, whereas grain cores remain comparatively relaxed. In contrast to the weakly bound A-site defect chemistry of Er, Y–Yb co-doping is associated with the formation of rare-earth (RE)–oxygen-vacancy-related defect centers likely involving both Ba and Ti sites, inducing a strongly distorted dopant-rich shell that effectively suppresses oxygen-vacancy migration and significantly enhances grain-boundary insulating behavior. Accordingly, Y–Yb co-doped compositions exhibit longer lifetime and improved reliability, with the optimized Yb2 sample showing an approximately 2.2-fold increase in mean time to failure (MTTF) compared to the baseline sample (Yb0), while compositions with moderate Yb content achieve the best combination of high breakdown strength (12.78 kV·mm⁻¹) and superior DC-bias stability. Overall, these findings identify moderate Y–Yb co-doping as an effective route to achieving a balanced improvement in permittivity, reliability, and miniaturization capability in next-generation high-reliability BME-MLCC materials.

Enhanced dielectric property and energy-storage performance of polyetherimide composite with TiO2@BaTiO3 core–shell particles

Jiang Yu,Lixin Xu,Huijian Ye

The development of polymer-based dielectric materials with simultaneously enhanced dielectric permittivity and energy-storage capability is of great importance for next-generation electronic and electrical devices. In this work, polyetherimide (PEI) composite films have developed by incorporating in-situ synthesized TiO 2 @BaTiO 3 (BTO) core–shell functional nanobars to achieve enhanced interfacial polarization. The TiO 2 @BTO particles are prepared through a sequential hydrothermal route, in which TiO 2 serves as the template for the growth of BTO shell. Owing to the one-dimensional core–shell architecture, the TiO 2 @BTO/PEI composite with enlarged interfacial area demonstrates the regulation of the local electric field in the polymer matrix. The incorporation of TiO 2 @BTO particles significantly enhances the dielectric constant, polarization response, and energy-storage performance of composite. The 0.5 wt% composite exhibits the outstanding overall performance, showing a favorable balance among dielectric enhancement, electrical reliability, and energy-storage behavior, e.g. energy density of 12.3 J cm −3 and charge-discharge efficiency of 85% at 400 MV m −1 . The improved energy storage property is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of the highly polarizable BTO shell and the Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars interfacial polarization. The rational design of one-dimensional core–shell nanofillers is an effective strategy for developing high-performance PEI-based dielectric composites for capacitive energy-storage applications.

Densification and Property Optimization of BaTiO3 Piezoelectric Ceramics Fabricated by Digital Light Processing with Sintering Aids

Yaxiang Sun,Peipei Wang,Weikai Shi,Xin Lan,Yanju Liu,Jinsong Leng

BaTiO 3 ceramics fabricated by conventional methods have been the primary focus of previous investigations. In contrast, the effects of different sintering aids on DLP-fabricated BaTiO 3 ceramics were systematically investigated over a wide sintering-temperature range. A DLP fabrication route incorporating sintering aids was employed to overcome the limitations of conventional fabrication in producing complex-structured lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with tailored properties. BaTiO 3 ceramics were fabricated using a high-solid-loading photosensitive slurry (85 wt%). Four independent compositions were prepared, each containing a single sintering aid (CuO, SiO 2 , TEOS, or Li 2 CO 3 ). The printed samples were subsequently sintered at temperatures ranging from 1375 to 1475 °C to establish clear processing–structure–property relationships. The results show that all sintering aids significantly influence densification behavior, microstructural evolution, and functional properties. Among them, TEOS-containing ceramics exhibit the most balanced overall performance, with optimal properties achieved within 1425–1450 °C. The sample sintered at 1425 °C shows the highest relative density (0.941) and dielectric constant (1904), while the maximum piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 = 234 pC/N) is obtained at 1450 °C. CuO addition leads to the highest piezoelectric response (d 33 = 258.7 pC/N), but is accompanied by abnormal grain growth and reduced microstructural stability. In contrast, SiO 2 - and Li 2 CO 3 -containing samples exhibit comparatively lower overall performance due to less effective densification and microstructural development. Overall, a systematic comparative framework was established for evaluating the effects of different sintering aids on DLP-fabricated BaTiO 3 ceramics. The combination of sintering-aid engineering and additive manufacturing offers an effective route for optimizing the microstructure and multifunctional performance of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics for energy harvesting and sensing applications.

Study on the piezo-photocatalytic performance of ZnFe2O4/BaTiO3@alumina hollow particles (ZBA) for tetracycline degradation

Yaping Jiang,Yufei Zhao,Yuzhen Wu,Gaoyang Xia,Yunxiao Ban

To overcome the limitations of traditional photocatalysts in treating persistent and biologically hazardous pollutants, this study employed the sol–gel method using hollow alumina nanoparticles as a template to successfully synthesize a hollow ZnFe 2 O 4 /BaTiO 3 @alumina (ZBA) composite material. The prepared ZBA composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline (TC), achieving a degradation rate of 84% within 60 min—values that were 2.72-fold, 1.81-fold, and 1.33-fold higher, respectively, than those observed for ZnFe 2 O 4 , BaTiO 3 , and ZnFe 2 O 4 /BaTiO 3 . This performance enhancement can be primarily attributed to its coupled piezoelectric–photocatalytic process, which facilitates charge transfer and reduces the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Free radical trapping experiments confirmed that OH − , O 2 − , and h + are the dominant active species involved in the degradation of TC. Furthermore, the hollow alumina support structure improved light utilization efficiency, catalyst dispersion, and magnetic recovery capability. These results demonstrate that the ZBA composite material is an efficient multifunctional photocatalyst with significant potential for practical wastewater treatment applications.
