Microsphere polymer material finds a wide range of applications in fields such as adsorbent, drug carrier, catalyst and coating, and receives continuous attention. We here report a novel strategy of quick synthesis of polymethacrylate microsphere via photoinitiated polymerization of methacrylate monomer in a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). A low cost and environmentally friendly natural product of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) has been directly used as Pickering emulsifier to stabilize the methacrylate monomer in water to prepare the HIPE. The factors to control the particle size such as the dosage of β-CD, volume fraction of monomer internal phase and amount of inert diluting solvent, have been investigated in detail. Meanwhile, the approach has been validated by using various methacrylate monomers. Our results indicate that using a diluting solvent can not only change the surface morphology but also control the inner microstructure of the microsphere. By using a poor solvent of cyclohexane as diluting agent, porous microsphere other than solid microsphere has been prepared, and it could be directly applied as adsorbent to decolor oil. Moreover, the obtained poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microsphere was post-modified to exhibit satisfactory adsorption efficiencies towards organic dye contaminates in water. Those results indicate powerful platform of the obtained microsphere with reactive groups for further modification to prepare functional materials for desired purposes. Based on the fast synthesis, high yield, low energy cost as well as no harmful waste, the preparation strategy reported in this work could be scalable, and the obtained microsphere may find promising potential applications. During the catalytic transformation of biomass into valuable chemicals, enhancing the yield of target products and inhibiting undesirable reactions are vital but challenging. In this study, a facile and efficient method for synthesizing a hierarchical bimetallic Mg–Sn-Beta-H zeolite was developed. Using this method, the simultaneous fabrication of catalytically active sites and hierarchical structures was achieved. Selective experiments and kinetic analysis confirmed that the catalytically active sites and hierarchical structures in the catalyst exhibited a clear synergistic effect on the transformation of glucose into lactic acid with a high yield of 62.7%, and the lactic acid yield remained above 58% after reusing the catalyst four times. An in-depth analysis of the synergistic catalysis mechanism demonstrated that strong and weak Lewis acidity in the catalytically active sites promoted the main reaction steps, including isomerisation and retro-aldol condensation, whereas the hierarchical structure induced by the introduction of magnesium into the parent Sn-Beta zeolite regulated the main reaction steps and suppressed the side reactions. The coupling of multifunctional active sites and hierarchical structures provides a new strategy for addressing the challenges of commercial lactic acid production.

Summary A novel Pt-based Beta encapsulated CeO 2 yolk-shell catalyst was successfully synthesized via a RF layer in the synthetic process. The CeO 2 @Pt-Beta catalyst showed high catalytic activity and stability toward the LT-ESR with respect to the reference Pt-Beta, CeO 2 -Pt-Beta, which benefited from the special yolk-shell structure and the synergistic effect between the CeO 2 movable core and Pt metal. The confinement effect of the yolk-shell architecture contributed to the high dispersion of Pt nanoparticles as well as to the accumulation of reactant molecules in the enclosed void space, which ensured the reactants reacted with CeO 2 and Pt to achieve a complete reaction.

A composite material Beta-SBA-15 (BS) comprising zeolite Beta units and SBA-15-like mesoporous structure was hydrothermally synthesized and served as catalyst support for the hydroisomerization of n-heptane. Materials were characterized by a variety of techniques. Characterization results revealed that Beta-SBA-15 composite has a two-dimensional hexagonal mesoporous channel with a pore size of 6.4 nm and a high concentration of moderate-strength acid sites. Evaluation results showed that Pt/HBS exhibited a relatively high n-heptane conversion (75.57%) with a good selectivity to isoheptanes (90.04%), resulting in the highest isoheptanes yield (68.04%) among all samples. The micro-mesoporous composite structure with moderate surface acidity enhanced diffusion of large isomerized intermediates as well as inhibiting the occurrence of cracking side reactions, achieving a high isoheptanes yield. Experimental data demonstrates that the indexed isomerization factor (IIF) as a performance descriptor can accurately predict the isomerization performance of catalysts.

A β-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetic zinc-metal organic framework (M-MOF/β-CD) was synthesized via a facile one-pot reaction. M-MOF/β-CD was used as a magnetic porous absorbent for the extraction and determination of prochloraz and three triazole fungicides in vegetable samples. M-MOF/β-CD was prepared by creating MOF layers on the surface of a Fe 3 O 4 –graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite and bonding them with β-CD molecules. Characterization suggested that a 3D porous structure was formed, with M-MOF/β-CD exhibiting high superparamagnetism and a large surface area. As a new strategy, integrating MOFs with Fe 3 O 4 –GO could improve their water-resistance and mechanical strength by providing a rigid nanosupport interface. Combining M-MOF and β-CD resulted in excellent selective adsorption capacities for prochloraz and three triazole fungicides. The static adsorption process was evaluated and the results were in good agreement with the Freundlich model. Subsequently, M-MOF/β-CD was applied to extracting prochloraz and triazole fungicides from tomato and lettuce vegetables, followed by HPLC-MS/MS determination. The limits of detection for the above fungicides were found to be 0.25–1.0 μg/L at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, with spiked recoveries of 74.13%–119.83%, indicating that M-MOF/β-CD was promising for application to the extraction and determination of fungicides in complex matrices.

The preparation of graphene oxide (GO)-based composite Langmuir films play important roles in the application of self-assembly nanomaterials. In this work, beta-cyclodextrin-modified graphene oxide (GO–CD) and the azobenzene-modified PAA derivative (abbreviated as PAA-Azo) have been designed and synthesized. The interfacial assemblies and host–guest interactions of GO–CD material with used two azobenzene compounds (N-Azo and PAA-Azo) in the obtained Langmuir and Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films were investigated. All the spreading films from different subphases were transferred onto solid substrates and their nanoscale morphologies as well as self-assembled characteristics were investigated by some methods including atomic force microscopy, UV-vis spectra, Raman spectra, etc. The obtained results indicated that there existed host–guest interaction between beta-CD segments with azobenzene groups. Besides, in the obtained GO–CD/N-Azo films, there also appeared J-aggregate of N-Azo molecules on GO sheet surface. However, there were only host–guest interactions without any aggregates of azobenzene segment in the GO–CD/PAA-Azo composite films. Hence, the presently obtained GO–CD/azobenzene composite Langmuir films provide new clues to develop GO-based self-assembled films as well as nanomaterials towards nano-device and sensor applications.

The synergistic effect of metal and acid centers influences performance of bifunctional hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) catalyst significantly. However, seldom work concerning this point has been performed quantitatively. Herein, the Ni/Beta catalysts were prepared for HDO of methyl laurate to bio-jet fuels. The ratios of metal to acid centers (n Ni /n A ) were used to quantitatively express the synergistic effect and correlated to the HDO performance. The transformation of methyl laurate mainly stagnates at fatty acid over the mono-functional catalyst (n Ni /n A = 0), while the acid centers are indispensable for the efficient transformation of methyl laurate at relatively mild reaction conditions. The TOF and selectivity to C 11 and C 12 alkanes increase and then keep constant with the increasing n Ni /n A . The turning point at the n Ni /n A of 0.67 implies that one nickel center over the Ni/Beta catalyst can balance ca. 1.5 acid centers in the HDO of methyl laurate. Besides, the higher n Ni /n A favors the HDO reaction pathway compared with the decarbonylation or decarboxylation ones. It increases the selectivity to C 12 alkanes and improves efficiency of atomic utilization during the hydrodeoxygenation of methyl laurate. This work provides a deeper insight into the quantitative synergy of active sites over the bifunctional HDO catalyst for production of bio-fuels.

Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) based cements are a popular bone filling material due to their good compatibility, biodegradation, osteoconductivity and osteoinductivity. However, several inherent limitations of current available formulations of β-TCP based cements restrict their applications in repairing of load-bearing bone defects. With the aim to improve mechanical properties and modify the hydration mechanism, a novel β-TCP based bone cement was developed by the modification with different proportions of bioglass (BG) nanospheres, wheat gluten (WG) and poly (γ-glutamic acid) (PGA). Effects of WG and PGA on the anti-washout ability, compressive strength, biodegradability, in vitro mineralisation capability and cytocompatibility of BG-modified β-TCP bone cements were investigated. Results indicated that the introduction of WG and PGA could greatly enhance the handling performances of 50 wt.% BG nanospheres modified β-TCP bone cements (denoted as 50BG-β-TCP). Meanwhile, compared with 50BG-β-TCP (8.8 ± 0.9 MPa), the compressive strength of WG-50BG-β-TCP (PGA) increased to 53.1 ± 4.1 MPa after setting for 5 days at 37℃. Furthermore, the extract solutions of these prepared cements exhibited good cytocompatibility to MC3T3-E1 cells. Therefore, the combination of WG and PGA was supposed to be a new strategy for developing injectable bone cement with good handling performances and mechanical and biological properties for repairing the load-bearing defects.

Emerging evidence has uncovered that noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) contribute to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nevertheless, the functions of the majority of long ncRNAs (lncRNAs) in HCC are unknown. Here, we intend to probe the function of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 in the evolvement of HCC and the related mechanism. Expression levels of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1, miR-186-5p and KLF7 mRNA in HCC tissues and adjacent non-tumor tissues were monitored. Gain- or loss-of-function assays were utilized to investigate the biological functions of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1, miR-186-5p and KLF7 in HCC cell lines (including HCCLM3 and Huh7). Western blot was implemented for the detection of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins (including E-cadherin, Vimentin and Snail), KLF7, Wnt, β-catenin, and stemness-related proteins (Nanog, OCT4, YKL40, and CD133). Furthermore, the targeted associations between lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1, miR-186-5p, and KLF7 were verified by bioinformatics analysis, dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) assays. As a result, lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 and KLF7 profiles were heightened in the HCC tissues versus adjacent normal tissues, while miR-186-5p had the opposite expression tendency. Up-regulation of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 was related to tumor size, advanced tumor stage, and lymph node metastasis of HCC patients. Functionally, overexpression of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 heightened HCC cells’ growth, invasion, EMT, and stemness and repressed their apoptosis by activating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. In contrast, up-regulation of miR-186-5p or inhibition of KLF7 had reverse effects. In vivo, lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 overexpression facilitated tumor growth and EMT, accompanied by declined miR-186-5p levels and enhanced KLF7 expression. The mechanistic studies revealed that miR-186-5p served as a common target of lncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 and KLF7. As hinted by the rescue experiments, NUTM2A-AS1 partly abated miR-186-5p-mediated anti-tumor effects in HCC cells, whereas KLF7 knockdown reversed the promotive effects of NUTM2A-AS1. LncRNA NUTM2A-AS1 accelerated the evolution of HCC by up-regulating the KLF7/Wnt/beta-catenin pathway through sponging miR-186-5p.

A series of Sm-doped CeO 2 /Beta composite catalysts with various Sm/Ce atomic ratios(0.1–0.4) were prepared by an incipient impregnation method, followed by calcination at 650 °C. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), N 2 adsorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), Raman, NH 3 -temperature programmed desorption(TPD) and CO 2 -TPD. The incorporation of Sm into CeO 2 /Beta increases obviously the propylene yield for the selective conversion of ethanol to propylene. The promoting effect of Sm on CeO 2 /Beta can be attributed to two reasons. One is more acetone intermediates are generated on the Sm-doped catalysts due to the enhanced formation of oxygen vacancies. The other is the conversion of acetone intermediate to propylene is enhanced owing to weaker and fewer acid sites on the Sm-doped catalysts.

As a major alternative to traditional brominated flame retardants (BFRs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) is widely used and has been commonly detected in various environmental media and organisms. Few previous studies have focused on DBDPE-induced locomotion neurotoxicity, and the exact molecular mechanisms and related health risks remain unclear. In this study, we first analyzed the locomotion indicators of nematodes following DBDPE exposure, demonstrated that DBDPE caused locomotion neurotoxicity, and identified that a series of the transthyretin (TTR)-like genes participated in the regulation of nematode motility by transcriptomic analysis, gene transcription validation and TTR-like mutant verification. Subsequently, this study demonstrated that DBDPE exacerbated amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposition by repressing TTR/TTR-like gene transcription based on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) model nematodes and human SH-SY5Y cells following DBDPE exposure and further revealed that DBDPE reduced the binding between TTR and Aβ by competing with the strand G region sites on the TTR/TTR-like protein, ultimately exacerbating Aβ deposition and the risk of AD. In short, our study demonstrated that DBDPE induced locomotion neurotoxicity and potential AD risks through intensifying Aβ deposition by inhibiting TTR/TTR-like proteins, providing reference support for risk management and policy formulation related to DBDPE and similarly structured novel BFRs.

The development of biodegradable Zn matrix composites has been considered a promising approach to achieving enhanced mechanical properties, controllable degradation rate, good biocompatibility, and good osseointegration as orthopedic implants. However, scant literature regarding Zn matrix composites has been reported because of the great difficulty in dispersing the nano-sized bioactive reinforcements uniformly within the Zn matrix. In the present study, a novel and effective method were employed to obtain Zn matrix composites reinforced by uniformly dispersed beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) via graphene oxide (GO)-assisted hetero-agglomeration and subsequent spark plasma sintering process. A very low-content (0.04 vol%) few-layered GO was used as a coupling reagent to connect the Zn matrix and nano-sized TCP particles. In an appropriate polarity solvent, the negatively charged GO sheets could combine with both the positively charged Zn powder and TCP particles by electrostatic attraction and charge neutralization. Due to the nature of hetero-agglomeration, the flexible GO sheet could adhere to the large Zn powder and attracted a certain amount of TCP particles to form a Zn/GO/TCP sandwich structure by charge neutralization thereby forming a uniform dispersion of TCP particles within Zn matrix. After the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process, the TCP particles incorporated with very thin ZnO layers (thickness of a few dozen nanometers) formed a homogeneous and unique 3D network-like distribution in as-sintered TCP/Zn composites. A unique “snap pea”-like structure was confirmed at the grain boundary of α-Zn grains, which consisted of the TCP particles as “pea” and thin ZnO layer as “pod”. Due to the uniform dispersion of bioactive TCP particles and unique structure of the TCP incorporating grain boundary, as-sintered 3TCP/Zn matrix composites possessed yield strength (YS) of 140.8 ± 7.7 MPa, failure strain of 36.0 ± 2.8%, the moderate degradation rate of 19.1 ± 3.3 μm·y −1 and good cytocompatibility to MC3T3-E1 cells. Moreover, osteogenic differentiation activity evaluation revealed that the addition of TCP could significantly improve the expressions of the osteogenic differentiation-related gene (ALP) in MC3T3-E1 cells, thereby resulting in improved osteogenic capability. Therefore, biodegradable 3TCP/Zn matrix composites fabricated by GO-assisted hetero-agglomeration and subsequent SPS process could be a promising material as orthopedic implants.
