Effective degradation of multiple antibiotics by 0D/3D/2D dual Z-heterojunction photocatalyst CdS QDs/Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 and study of degradation mechanism

Ying Du,Linfei Li,Yanting Tang,Juan Li,Quanhui Guo,Guikuan Yue

With the production and application of antibiotics, the generated substandard antibiotic wastewater has brought unprecedented damage to the environment and finally the health of human beings. To alleviate this problem, photocatalytic degradation was proposed, and various catalysts have been developed with high efficiency and low cost. Herein, a novel 0D/3D/2D dual Z-heterojunction photocatalyst CdS QDs/Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 was constructed by in-situ growth method in order to efficiently degrade multiple antibiotic pollutants. The combination of multi-dimensional materials is more conducive to the close contact between materials and the effective transport of photogenerated carriers. Results reveal that the sample of 75 %CdS QDs/Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 (denoted as 0.75CSBC) showed the best degradation activity and stability for tetracycline (TC), and the degradation rate could reach 80.83 % within 12 min under visible light irradiation. Based on the detailed analysis of the results from free radical trapping experiment, Mott-Schottky test and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) test, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism and pathway were proposed. Besides, 0.75CSBC showed excellent degradation activity for levofloxacin (LVFX), oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC) and norfloxacin (NFLX), confirming its good universality. The multi-dimensional dual Z-heterojunction photocatalyst not only provides more active sites but also promotes the efficient migration of photogenerated charge, together with an excellent stability, indicating its wide practical application in the field of photocatalytic wastewater treatment. This work also provides an interesting method for the preparation of multi-dimensional heterogeneous catalysts.

Fluid-induced piezoelectric field enhanced photocatalytic antibiotic removal over nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots/Bi2WO6@polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene membrane in aqueous environments

Haitao Ren,Abdelkader Labidi,Atif Sial,Zongcheng Miao,Yuzhen Zhao,Xiangbo Feng,Jianmin Luo,Chuanyi Wang

Enhancing the charge separation efficiency of photocatalysts is crucial to their catalytic activity, which is still challenging. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots ( N -CQDs) were combined with Bi 2 WO 6 to construct an N -CQDs/Bi 2 WO 6 heterocomposite, which was loaded onto the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride- co -hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) membrane to design a flexible, porous and hydrophilic N -CQDs/Bi 2 WO 6 @PVDF-HFP photocatalytic membrane. Piezo-response force microscopy (PFM) and the maximum effective piezoelectric coefficient ( d33 ) measurements demonstrate that the PVDF-HFP membrane has favorable piezoelectric properties. Besides, fluid-induced mechanical energy can generate a piezoelectric field within the PVDF-HFP membrane. Theoretical calculations indicate that the difference in work function at the N -CQDs/Bi 2 WO 6 heterocomposite interface creates an inherent electric field. Therefore, the synergistic effect of the two electric fields improves the separation and migration efficiency of photogenerated carriers in N -CQDs/Bi 2 WO 6 heterocomposite. The membrane effectively removed 85.3 % of oxytetracycline (OTC) under the synergistic driving of water flow (900 r/min) and visible light, surpassing the results of only water flow (34.4 %) and visible light (63.1 %). Furthermore, the degradation performance of the membrane towards OTC remains almost unchanged after multiple recycles, highlighting its favorable reusability. This work addresses the issue of powdery catalysts in recovering for practical applications and underlines the potential of integrating with natural low-frequency water flows to purify organic-contaminated wastewater.

An all-in-one self-supporting Na-Bi2WO6 photocatalyst for portable air purifier: Laminar splitting boosts high efficacy in mineralizing toluene and disinfection

Mingxia Lu,Lixia Yang,Ziyi Wu,Qi Wang,Menglei Wang,Jiajian Xu,Shuqu Zhang,Renjie Song,Weili Dai,Jianping Zou,Shenglian Luo

An air purifier that provides clean air will be popular if it is portable and capable of removing volatile organic chemicals and reducing exposure to bacteria. Herein, ultra-thin and dense Bi 2 WO 6 nanoflakes grown on W meshes specialize in offering abundant oxygen vacancies due to Na + driving laminar splitting. Under visible lights , the photogenerated carriers streaming along the ultrathin Bi 2 WO 6 surface produce bountiful reactive oxygen species for mineralizing VOCs and sweeping bacteria. Enriched with •O 2 - and •OH, a 15 cm*5 cm Na-Bi 2 WO 6 mesh can completely degrade 30 ppm toluene in 0.45 dm 3 reactor in 1 hour without producing any toxic intermediates like benzene, and its efficacy only decayed by 4% after a continuous 14-hour run. A cup-shaped air purifier was assembled with the Na-Bi 2 WO 6 mesh, enabling the rapid elimination of 1 ppm toluene, 2 ppm formaldehyde, and bacteria within a 120 dm 3 test space.

Br−/Bi0 synergistic engineering of Bi2WO6-x boosts visible-light NO deep oxidation via promoting NO2−-to-NO3− step with near-zero NO2 emission

Wenjie He,Jiazhen Liao,Lin Jing,Xiao Zhang,Rong Xiao,Peng Chen,Xing'an Dong,Wendong Zhang,Yan Zou,Yuechang Wei

Herein, Br − and Bi 0 co-modified Bi 2 WO 6-x nanosheets were synthesized for efficient photocatalytic NO removal. Plasmonic metallic Bi 0 markedly enhanced visible light absorption, and the Br − -Bi 0 synergistic interaction facilitated efficient separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, the optimal catalyst achieved a maximum visible-light-driven NO removal efficiency of 53.1% with near-zero toxic NO 2 accumulation, significantly outperforming pristine Bi 2 WO 6-x (4.6%). Quenching experiments reveal that NO activation and oxidation are dominated by photogenerated e − and •O 2 − radicals, while photogenerated h + drives the subsequent deep oxidation of NO 2 . In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm the coexistence of direct (NO → NO −  → NO 3 − ) and indirect (NO → NO 2 −  → NO 3 − ) NO deep oxidation pathways. The Br − -Bi 0 synergy promotes the NO 2 − -to-NO 3 − step, effectively suppressing toxic NO 2 accumulation. This work provides mechanistic insights into the design of advanced photocatalysts for safe and efficient atmospheric pollutant purification.

Synergistic Effect of Charge Separation and Multiple Reactive Oxygen Species Generation on Boosting Photocatalytic Degradation of Fluvastatin by ZnIn2S4/Bi2WO6 Z-Scheme Heterostructured Photocatalytst

Tingting Liu,Fanyu Yang,Liming Wang,Liang Pei,Yushan Hu,Ru Li,Kang Hou,Tianlong Ren

The application of semiconductor photocatalysts with narrow band gaps is hindered by the rapid recombination of electron–hole pairs and limitation of multiple reactive oxygen species (ROS) synchronous generation. A n–n-type direct Z-scheme heterostructured photocatalyst was constructed based on the staggered band alignment of bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) and indium zinc sulfide (ZnIn2S4) to reveal the synergistic effect of charge separation and multiple ROS synchronous generation on boosting photocatalytic performance. Under irradiation, electrons in the conduction band (CB) of Bi2WO6and holes in the valence band (VB) of ZnIn2S4recombined at interface to prolong the lifetime of electrons in the CB of ZnIn2S4and holes in the VB of Bi2WO6. Meanwhile, the multiple ROS synchronously generated to oxidize pollutant due to the strong redox ability of electrons of ZnIn2S4and holes of Bi2WO6, which was determined by the CB potential of ZnIn2S4and VB potential of Bi2WO6. The results provided valuable insights for the application of photocatalysts with a narrow band gap in the field of water pollution control. Keywords:photocatalysis;direct Z-scheme heterojunction;charge separation;redox ability;photoelectrochemical property

The Schottky junction between Ti3C2 MXene quantum dots and Bi2WO6 with oxygen vacancies accelerates charge separation and improves the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline

Ning Qi,Lirong Mo,Yacen Tang,Youzhou He,Yuqing Wang,Xintong Shi,Yuyu Fang,Xingyan Liu,Siping Wei

Photocatalytic technology is widely used to solve environmental pollution problems, while most photocatalysts have a weak response to visible light, photogenerated charges are easy to recombine, and catalytic activity is limited. Herein, we used electrostatic self-assembly to tightly load Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots (MQDs) onto Bi 2 WO 6 with oxygen vacancies (BWO) to obtain BWO@MQDs composite photocatalytic materials for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The presence of oxygen vacancies in BWO provided more active sites, facilitating the reduction of O 2 to ·O 2 - by electrons. Moreover, MQDs and BWO could form a Schottky junction at the contact interface, and then the electrons on the BWO conduction band were transferred to MQDs, reducing the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the TC degradation efficiency of the BWO@MQDs photocatalyst was 88.12 %, which was 1.61 times that of original Bi 2 WO 6 , and the catalytic activity was well preserved after cycle stability testing. The possible photocatalytic mechanism and photodegradation pathway were revealed by UV–vis, XPS, ESR and LC-MS, the results indicated that ·O 2 - played the most dominant role in TC degradation and the final degradation products were mainly CO 2 and H 2 O. This study has important implications in oxygen vacancies and quantum dots co-modified bismuth-based materials for photocatalysis to solve water pollution problems.

Visible light responsive photocatalytic fuel cell with Ce-UiO-66/g-C3N4/Bi2WO6/Ti photoanode for simultaneous degradation of rhodamine B and electricity generation

Qingmei Qiao,Yunlan Xu,Dengjie Zhong,Xihong Ke,Yuqin Yang,Hanlu Zeng

In order to enhance the carrier separation efficiency and redox ability of photoanode, a dual Z-scheme heterojunction Ce-UiO-66/g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 /Ti photoanode was prepared and assembled with Cu cathode to form PFC. The characterization results show that Ce-UiO-66/g-C 3 N 4 /Bi 2 WO 6 uniformly distributed on the Ti substrate, with average crystallite size of 9.04 nm and average particle size of 33.05 nm, which provides sufficient reactive active sites for RhB degradation. The RhB degradation rate, P max , J sc , V oc and FF of the PFC were 90.9 % (90 min), 7.53 µW cm -2 , 0.152 mA cm -2 , 0.37 V and 0.134, respectively. The turnover frequency (TOF) for RhB degradation by the PFC reached 0.98 h -1 . Fermi energy level analysis shows that a double-Z heterojunction is formed between Bi 2 WO 6 and g-C 3 N 4 , and between Bi 2 WO 6 and Ce-UiO-66, which not only effectively separates photogenerated e - - h + , but also retains the high redox ability of the composite. Moreover, with the introduction of Ce-UiO-66, the composite photoanode has larger specific surface area and wider visible light absorption range. In addition, because of the built-in electric field, the photogenerated electrons can migrate to the surface of composite particles more easily and react with dissolved oxygen to generate more •O 2 - to participate in the degradation of RhB. This work provides a valuable reference for developing PFC photoanode with high efficiency and visible light response.

Anchoring black phosphorous quantum dots on Bi2WO6 porous hollow spheres: A novel 0D/3D S-scheme photocatalyst for efficient degradation of amoxicillin under visible light

Lijun Chen,Chenguang Wang,Guozhao Liu,Guanwen Su,Kairu Ye,Wanping He,Huiru Li,Hongyuan Wei,Leping Dang

Reasonable regulation of the micro-morphology of material can significantly enhance the related performance. Herein, bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 , simplified as BWO) porous hollow spheres with flower-like surface were prepared successfully, and this unique morphology endowed BWO with improved photocatalytic performance by reflecting and absorbing the light multiple times inside the cavity. To inhibit the rapid recombination of photogenerated e - -h + pairs within BWO itself, black phosphorous quantum dots (BPQDs) were anchored onto the nanosheets of BWO sphere closely by a facile self-assembly process, which will not shade the pores of BWO owing to the small size of BPQDs, but the BP nanosheets have the chance to do that. The band gap of BPQDs expanded much after exfoliation due to the quantum confinement effects, which matched the energy band of BWO well to form S-scheme heterojunction , achieving more efficient separation of photogenerated charges. As a result, the BPQDs/BWO exhibited attractive photocatalytic performance in the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) and other antibiotics. Besides, the operation conditions were optimized, specifically, 94.5 % of AMX (20 mg/L, 200 mL) can be removed in 60 min when 50 mg of 2BPQDs/BWO was used as catalyst with solution pH = 11. Moreover, a possible degradation pathway of AMX was proposed based on the detected intermediates.

Regulation of friction pair to promote conversion of mechanical energy to chemical energy on Bi2WO6 and realization of enhanced tribocatalytic activity to degrade different pollutants

Meixuan Wu,Yaning Zhang,Yuyan Yi,Baocheng Zhou,Pengfei Sun,Xiaoping Dong

Recently, friction-induced tribocatalysis has received tremendous attention through converting mechanical energy to chemical energy. However, its efficiency is much lower than those of photocatalysis and piezocatalysis, and its environmental application is limited in dye degradation. Herein, we developed a facile approach to improve the tribocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 via adding trace polymer powders to form friction pairs with Bi 2 WO 6 . Among various polymers, PTFE was demonstrated to be the best counterpart of Bi 2 WO 6 . Subsequently, the PTFE dosage, stirring rate, magnetic bar size and number, and stirring mode were further optimized. The PTFE-promoted Bi 2 WO 6 tribocatalysis was verified to possess excellent performance not only for removing different dyes, but also for degrading chlorophenols that are typical persistent organic pollutants . Multiple uses of the recycled catalysts indicated its good stability and prominent tribocatalytic durability. EPR measurements suggested the generation of hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical, which were determined to be continuously generated within 12 h at the rates of 0.88 μM h −1 and 85 μM h −1 , respectively. Subsequently, a possible mechanism was proposed to explain the enhanced performance of the PTFE-promoted Bi 2 WO 6 tribocatalysis. Finally, on basis of the detected intermediates, the degradation pathways of Rhodamine B and 2,4-Dichlorophenol during tribocatalysis were suggested.

A novel flower-like dual Z-scheme BiSI/Bi2WO6/g-C3N4 photocatalyst has excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of organic pollutants under visible light

Rui Zhang,Kunlin Zeng

Preparation of Z-scheme composite photocatalyst to degrade organic matter in water is the most popular research trend. However, due to the strict requirements of band edge energy level arrangement and interface contact, it is a great challenge to explore suitable photocatalytic materials to form Z-scheme photocatalytic system. In our work, a novel visible light driven double Z-scheme photocatalyst BiSI/Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 was successfully prepared by hydrothermal synthesis . The physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized by XRD , XPS, SEM, BET, UV–vis, PL , EIS and LC-MS. The photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and rhodamine B (RhB) showed that BiSI/Bi 2 WO 6 /(20%) g-C 3 N 4 had the best photocatalytic activity . The results free radical trap experiments demonstrate that h + and O 2 − are the main free radicals in the photocatalytic process. Because of the heterojunction formed between BiSI, Bi 2 WO 6 and g-C 3 N 4 , the electron conduction was accelerated, the photogenerated electrons and holes were separated effectively, and the photocatalytic performance of the composite was improved. Additionally, cycle test showed that BiSI/Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 hybrid material had stable degradation ability in the process of photodegradation . This unique heterojunction photocatalysis material has broad application prospects in the removal of organic pollutants and environmental treatment.

A promising type-II/Z-scheme ternary MoS2/Bi2S3/Bi2WO6 heterostructure photoanode for photocatalytic fuel cell effective hydrogen production and electricity generation in organic wastewater

Aobo Wan,Ziwei Ren,Yun He,Yizhen Zhang,Shunxi Zhang,Min Tu,Jianfen Li,Ming Qiu

Developing efficient and stable bismuth-based photoelectrodes is one of the key points for producing green hydrogen in photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). In this study, a PFC system with two photoelectrodes (a MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 photoanode and a MoS 2 -Ni foam photocathode) was established for the first time. The ternary Bi 2 WO 6 -based composite photoanode was characterized as having not only the broad visible absorption region but also strong interactions between Bi 2 WO 6 , Bi 2 S 3 and MoS 2 . Additionally, the ternary composite photoanode exhibits excellent photoelectrochemical performance, achieving a photocurrent density reaches 3.2 mA/cm 2 , which is 17.78 times that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 . These observations can be explained by the creation of a type II/Z-scheme heterostructure of MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 photoanode. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulation proves the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction between MoS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 , which offers an opportunity for facilitating the mitigation and separation of photoexcited charge. The dual-photoelectrode PFC system demonstrated an effective hydrogen production capacity, exhibiting an output of 18.32 μmol/cm 2 /h. At the same time, the power density was 0.1325 mW/cm 2 , exhibiting a 1.41-fold increase relative to the MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 -Pt PFC system. This work offers a novel method for building effective PFC systems that co-produce electricity and hydrogen.

Exploring multifunctional photocatalysts with rational design and construction of unique transport channels is of great significance for the value-added chemicals production and environmental remediation. In this work, a novel 2D/1D/-2D RP/BP-MBWO dual heterostructure photocatalyst has been successfully synthesized by loading the in-situ grown 2D/1D RP/BP heterostructure on the 2D Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets. through simple ultrasonic agitation.Benefiting from this favourable interfacial and structural characteristics, the fabricated BP/RP-MBWO photocatalyst shows a sharply improved photocatalytic H 2 and H 2 O 2 evolution performance. Excitingly, the optimal of H 2 O 2 production rate of the BP/RP-Bi 2 WO 6 composites is as high as 622.5 μmol g −1 h −1 under visible light irradiation, which is approximately 15 times as that of pure MBWO. The hydrogen production performance of the complexes was significantly improved compared to the pure MBWO samples. When the BP/RP loading was 20 %, the prepared nanocomposites showed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution efficiency with the hydrogen production rate of about 0.77 μmol ⋅ g −1 ⋅ h −1 . This work is expected to offer a new inspiration for the rational design and construction of effcient photocatalyst systems toward solar energy capture and conversion.
