The removal of emulsified oil and organic dyes from wastewater is of extreme challenge owing to their difference of physical and chemical properties. Here we choose cellulose fibers derived from wood as supporting materials and the irregular flake-like BiOBr and sphere-like AgBr are in situ grown on the fibers via freeze-drying, which successfully create wood-derived fiber/BiOBr/AgBr (WFBA) sponge for wastewater treatment. The obtained WFBA sponge reveals favorable mechanical strength at a strain of 60% and 50 cycles of compression tests. In view of the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of WFBA sponge, it can be used for separating surfactant-stabilized kerosene-in-water emulsions with oil rejection ration higher than 99.91%, and simultaneously adsorbing organic dyes with removal efficiency >99.99%. Furthermore, the polluted WFBA sponge is capable of realizing dye degradation under Xe lamp, solar light and fluorescent lamp due to its enhanced photocatalytic activity. Thus, the regenerated sponge can take full advantage of functionalities of emulsion separation and dye adsorption, as presented by that the oil rejection ration still keeps as high as 98.23% and removal dye efficiency remained over 99.90% after five cycles of filtration. This study provides a feasible and scalable approach to engineer versatile materials for wastewater treatment.

BiOBr-based composite photocatalysts had attracted extensive attention for efficient photocatalytic degradation aqueous organic pollutants in the past decade. However, the catalysis ability of photocatalyst is greatly limited by their intrinsic high recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers. Herein, we solve this problem by constructing a novel 2D/3D Bi 5 O 7 Br/BiOBr heterojunction photocatalyst that was prepared via one-step facile hydrolysis process. The pure Bi 5 O 7 Br and pure BiOBr photocatalysts were also obtained by only adjusting the pH value of the mixed solution. The obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), optical and electric property analysis and etc. The results suggested that 2D Bi 5 O 7 Br nanosheets tightly attached to the surface of BiOBr 3D structure with nanoflakes self-assembled microsphere , which could increase the transfer and separation efficiency of photogenerated charges. Furthermore, the 2D/3D Bi 5 O 7 Br/BiOBr heterojunction exhibited superior visible light photocatalytic performance for carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation than pure BiOBr and pure Bi 5 O 7 Br, which owing to the enhanced separation of photoinduced electrons and holes. At last, the underlying photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated based on the band structure and radical scavenging experiments. This work provided a feasible design idea to one-step construct 2D/3D nanocomposite for pharmaceutical wastewater purification.

The degradation of cefazolin (CFZ) by Ag 3 PO 4 /BiOBr composites under visible-light irradiation was explored. The main and interaction of parameters (catalyst dosage, pH, CFZ initial concentration and degradation time) on removal of CFZ were studied by Box–Behnken design combined with response surface methodology. The pH was the most influential factor and both h + and OH played a role in the photocatalytic process. The high correlation coefficients (R 2 = 0.9986 and adjusted R 2 = 0.9973) demonstrated close fit between the predicted and experimental values. The exceptional efficiency of Ag 3 PO 4 /BiOBr composite in removing CFZ represents a promising technique for treatment of CFZ-containing wastewater.

In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (NSCQDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method, carbon nitride (C 3 N 4 ) was fired in a muffle furnace in an air atmosphere, and finally, the ternary heterostructure of NSCQDs, C 3 N 4 and bismuth oxide bromide (BiOBr) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method (NSCQDs/C 3 N 4 /BiOBr). The morphology of the catalyst was observed through SEM and TEM. The chemical bonds were analyzed by XPS and FT-IR to further confirm that NSCQDs and C 3 N 4 were successfully attached to BiOBr. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized catalysts was studied by degrading RhB under simulated light source. The experiment results showed that under optimal conditions, the degradation rate of RhB by NSCQDs/C 3 N 4 /BiOBr within 20 min was as high as 99.9%, which was much higher than that of pure BiOBr (33.5%). The degradation curve was combined with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model with a kinetic constant of 0.32578 min −1 , which was 17.7 times that of BiOBr (0.01837 min −1 ). Catalyst recycling tests showed that NSCQDs/C3N4/BiOBr had extremely high stability. The active species quenching test showed that \({\text{O}}_{2}^{ \cdot - }\) and 1 O 2 were the main active species during the photocatalytic process. The inhibition effect of NSCQDs and C 3 N 4 on BiOBr photogenerated carrier recombination was analyzed by photoluminescence and transient photocurrent tests. This study is expected to provide an attractive strategy for constructing efficient and environmentally friendly photocatalysts for environmental remediation.

The utilization of solar energy in photocatalytic CO 2 reduction technology has demonstrated a significant potential in addressing the challenges of environmental pollution and energy shortage issues. Precise modulating of the photoreduction CO 2 pathway to achieve desired products is of particular interest, while the design of cost-effective and robust catalysts remains crucial. Herein, a series of BiOBr-based photocatalysts with different Co species were synthesized through a facile simple hydrothermal method in combination with the mechanical mixing. The Co species, which can be precisely modulated from Co 3 O 4 to CoOOH by adjusting the concentration of H 2 O 2 , were anchored into the BiOBr nanospheres to establish rich Z-scheme heterojunction interfaces. The Co species modulating of BiOBr-based Z-scheme heterojunction can achieve the transform photoreduction CO 2 products from CO to CH 4 . The CO selectivity in CO 2 photoreduction to reached 98.10 % (54.10 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ), while the CH 4 selectivity over CoOOH/BiOBr reached 72.59 % (20.06 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). The outstanding photocatalytic performance and selective regulation of products are ascribed to the modulation of Co species in the BiOBr-based heterojunctions, which enables the customization of the photoreduction CO 2 pathway to achieve the desired products transformation from CO to CH 4 . In situ experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the excellent CO selectivity observed in Co 3 O 4 /BiOBr heterojunction can be ascribed to a lower energy for *CO species compared with that of hydrogenation to *HCOOH and *CHO intermediates. Conversely, the presence of *HCOOH and *CHO intermediates with lower energy levels compared with *CO species achieved superior CH 4 selectivity in CoOOH/BiOBr heterojunction. This precise design strategy insights into the meticulous customization of Co species in semiconductor-based heterostructures at the molecular level, and enlightens the selective regulation of desired products for catalysis applications.

The immobilization of highly-efficient catalyst has always been one key issue in the research and development of industrial catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction. In this work, a series of novel Ag/Bi 12 SiO 20 /BiOBr composite films with varying levels of Ag deposition have been successfully synthesized using in-situ photodeposition method. Photocatalytic CO 2 reduction experiments indicate that 1.5 wt.%-Ag/Bi 12 SiO 20 /BiOBr composite film demonstrates the highest CO generation rate (33.47 μmol∙m −2 ∙h −1 ) and cycle stability, exhibiting the 1.62-fold increase after the incorporation Ag nano-particles (NPs). Characterization tests reveal that the presence of Ag NPs not only brings about the red-shift phenomenon of light absorption to extend and enhance visible-light response, but also acts as photo-generated carrier recombination center between Bi 12 SiO 20 and BiOBr to create unique Z-scheme charge transport pathway. More importantly, the Schottky barrier effect between Ag and semiconductors is conducive to improving the effective separate of photogenerated charges, improving photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. Our findings should offer valuable guidance for the research and development of construction heterostructures and noble metal deposition modification strategy for solar-driven CO 2 reduction photocatalyst system.

A novel Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr Z-scheme heterojunction is fabricated via a room-temperature co-precipitation method. • The Z-scheme mechanism preserves strong redox potentials, generating abundant ·OH, ·O 2 - , and h + . • Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr achieves 85.8% MB degradation in 150 min, with a rate constant 16.06 times that of BiOBr. • The composite exhibits excellent stability and reusability over four consecutive degradation cycles. • This work provides a green, scalable strategy for designing high-performance bismuth-based photocatalysts : Bismuth and bismuth-rich oxyiodides, such as BiOX and Bi 4 O 5 I 2 , are promising visible-light photocatalysts but suffer from rapid photogenerated carrier recombination. Here, we construct a novel Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr heterojunction via a facile room-temperature co-precipitation method that creates a tight heterointerface between two layered bismuth-based semiconductors. This yields intimate contact confirmed by HRTEM and XPS. The composite also shows enhanced visible light absorption (UV–Vis DRS) and markedly suppressed photoluminescence, indicating efficient charge separation, further supported by higher photocurrent and smaller EIS arc radius. More importantly, the work proposes a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism rather than a conventional type-II junction. Based on band-edge calculations (Mott–Schottky) and radical trapping experiments, the composite preserves the strong reduction ability of electrons in Bi 4 O 5 I 2 and the strong oxidation ability of holes in BiOBr, while the less energetic charge carriers recombine. This mechanism is a key conceptual advance because it overcomes the redox-capacity loss typical of type-II systems and generates highly reactive species (h + , ·OH, and ·O 2 - ), as verified by scavenger tests. The k value of Bi 4 O 5 I 2 /BiOBr-3 (0.01333 min -1 ) is 7.98 and 16.06 times higher than those of Bi 4 O 5 I 2 (0.00167 min -1 ) and BiOBr (0.00083 min -1 ), respectively. The composite also demonstrates excellent stability over four consecutive cycles. This work offers a simple, energy-efficient strategy for constructing high-performance bismuth-based Z-scheme heterojunctions, providing a viable route for wastewater remediation and advancing the rational design of photocatalysts with synergistic redox capability.

Bi single atoms are anchored at oxygen vacancies in BiOBr to construct Bi–Ov active sites. • Bi–Ov coupling enables electronic structure engineering and efficient charge transfer. • BiSAC@BiOBr-Ov achieves an NH 3 production rate of 3107.3 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 . • Bi–Ov sites promote N 2 activation and lower the barrier for *NNH formation. Photocatalytic nitrogen reduction offers a sustainable route to ammonia synthesis under ambient conditions, yet its practical implementation remains limited by inefficient visible-light utilization, rapid charge recombination, and insufficient N 2 activation. Herein, we report an electronically coupled dual-defect catalyst, in which atomically dispersed Bi species are anchored on oxygen-vacancy-rich (BiOBr-Ov) to construct Bi-Ov interfacial active sites for visible-light-driven ammonia production (BiSAC@BiOBr-Ov). Structural and spectroscopic such XRD and XAFS analyses confirm that Bi incorporation preserves the tetragonal BiOBr framework while stabilizing vacancy-associated electrons and reconstructing the local electronic environment. As a result, BiSAC@BiOBr-Ov exhibits enhanced visible-light absorption, a narrowed band gap, suppressed carrier recombination, reduced interfacial charge-transfer resistance, and optimized conduction-band-related energetics. These electronic advantages translate into a markedly improved NH 3 generation rate of 3107.3 μmol⋅g −1 ⋅h −1 , which is 3.8 and 8.1 times higher than those of BiOBr-Ov and pristine BiOBr, respectively, together with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.38% at 420 nm and excellent cycling stability. Isotope-labelling and control experiments verify that gaseous N 2 and water are the nitrogen and proton sources, respectively. In situ FTIR identifies hydrogenated N x H y intermediates during illumination, while DFT calculations reveal lowered work function, increased near-Fermi-level states, strengthened N 2 adsorption, and a reduced barrier for the key *NNH formation step at the Bi-Ov interface. This work demonstrates that coupling single-atom Bi with oxygen vacancies is an effective strategy for promoting interfacial charge transfer and N 2 activation in BiSAC@BiOBr-Ov catalysts for solar ammonia synthesis. A Z-scheme BiOBr/COF-1 heterojunction was synthesized via a solvothermal method. • The catalyst exhibited enhanced visible-light absorption and charge separation. • A mechanism for the simultaneous removal of RhB and Cr(VI) was revealed. The construction of heterojunctions is commonly employed to boost the separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers and the overall photocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel Z -scheme BiOBr/COF-1 heterojunction photocatalyst was synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the effective formation of the heterojunction, which exhibited enhanced visible-light absorption and improved separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. Compared with pristine COF-1 and BiOBr, the optimized BiOBr/COF-1 composite (BC-1) demonstrated superior photocatalytic activity for both rhodamine B (RhB) degradation and Cr(VI) reduction. Notably, the reduction efficiency of Cr(VI) was significantly enhanced in a coexisting system of RhB and Cr(VI). In addition, BiOBr/COF-1 exhibited good structural stability over multiple reaction cycles. The development of efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) degradation under visible light remains a critical challenge due to constraints in light absorption efficiency and rapid electron-hole recombination. In this study, a novel dual S-scheme ternary heterojunction photocatalyst, In-TiO 2 @BiOBr@In-TCPP (IBP), was synthesized via a hydrothermal method for high-performance H 2 S desulfurization. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the successful formation of the heterostructure, where In-TiO 2 facilitated spontaneous H 2 S dissociation, BiOBr served as an efficient electron transport medium, and In-TCPP extended the light absorption spectrum to 1200 nm. The optimized IBP-3 demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving complete H 2 S degradation (100 %) within 120 min under visible light irradiation and retaining over 70 % efficiency even after 8 h of continuous operation. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the synergistic integration of In-TiO 2 , BiOBr, and In-TCPP enhanced visible light utilization, suppressed charge carrier recombination, and promoted reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation via internal electric fields (IEF) and S-scheme charge transfer pathways. This study not only presents the rational engineering of multi-component systems for designing advanced heterojunction photocatalysts to address industrial desulfurization challenges, but also emphasizes the potential of tailored heterostructures in advancing sustainable environmental remediation technologies.

α-Lactalbumin (α-La), a major allergenic protein in milk, requires ultrasensitive detection to address food safety concerns and mitigate allergic risks. This study introduces a novel label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer sensor for α-La detection in dairy products, utilizing a Bi 2 MoO 6 /BiOBr heterojunction substrate sensitized with in-situ synthesized Ag 2 S quantum dots (QDs). The heterojunction platform enhances visible-light absorption and photocurrent generation, while the in-situ Ag 2 S QDs optimizes interfacial charge transfer and surface reactivity. Systematic optimization of experimental parameters such as heterojunction composition, pH, ascorbic acid (AA) concentration, and Ag 2 S QDs conditions enabled precise tuning of the sensor’s performance. The aptamer-functionalized electrode selectively recognized α-La through specific binding interactions, with photocurrent signal attenuation proportional to α-La concentration. The sensor demonstrated a linear response from 0.005 to 50 ng/mL, described by the equation I (μA) = 56.81 − 9.796 lg c , ( R 2 = 0.9934), and achieved an ultralow detection limit of 0.106 pg/mL, surpassing existing methods. The sensor exhibited remarkable stability, reproducibility, and selectivity in complex milk matrices, underscoring its practical utility. This work advances PEC sensing by rationally combining heterojunctions and QDs, providing a robust platform for allergen monitoring in food safety applications.

Exploring well-designed photocatalysts with high-quality interfaces for converting CO 2 into value-added chemical fuels faces a great challenge. Herein, a 2D/0D S-scheme heterojunction of Cs 3 Bi 2 Br 9 nanosheet/BiOBr nanocrystal (CBB/BOB) photocatalysts is designed and synthesized by an in-situ growth strategy for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction. The S-scheme heterojunctions with atomic-level intimate interfaces greatly accelerate the separation and transfer efficiency of photoinduced carriers and improve the reduction ability of photogenerated electrons resulting in prominent photocatalytic activity toward CO 2 photoreduction. Consequently, the environment-friendly hybrids show impressive photocatalytic CO 2 reduction efficiency and high CH 4 selectivity with a CH 4 yield and selectivity of 12.8 μmol g −1 h −1 and 79 %, respectively, which is 43 and 2 times higher than that of pristine CBB, respectively. The detailed experimental characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that the high adsorption/activation capability of CO 2 molecules and CO* intermediates and the lowered free energy of CO 2 reduction promote the photoconversion of CO 2 to CH 4 on the CBB/BOB heterojunctions. This work provides a new strategy for constructing perovskite-based photocatalysts for solar fuel applications.
