Enhanced photoelectrochemical water oxidation over a surface-hydroxylated BiVO4 photoanode: advantageous charge separation and water dissociation

Yaru Li,Fangxia Xie,Zijun Sun,Zhuobin Yu,Jianxin Liu,Xiaochao Zhang,Yawen Wang,Yunfang Wang,Rui Li,Caimei Fan

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is one of the most effective photoanode materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but its reaction rate is greatly limited by the poor separation efficiency of photo-generated charges and sluggish kinetics. In this work, a surface hydroxylation strategy was carried out to overcome the above-mentioned shortcomings. A simple post-synthetic NaOH immersion method was used to successfully hydroxylate the BiVO4 photoanode surface without affecting its bulk properties. The modified surface hydroxyl group not only promotes the photo-generated charge separation efficiency of hydroxylated BiVO4 but also tailors its local electronic structure to form high-valence Bi(3+x)+ states. The Bi(3+x)+ species serving as the active site is advantageous for water dissociation, thus decreasing the free energy barrier of the potential-determining step for the boosted overall water oxidation kinetics. As a result, the best hydroxylated BiVO4 photoanode achieves a higher photocurrent density of 1.14 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under visible light irradiation, which is 4.75 times that of bare BiVO4 (0.24 mA cm−2), and moreover, a cathodic shift of 190 mV at 1 mA cm−2 is obtained. Our work affords a practical method with strong operability to improve the intrinsic photoelectrochemical performance of photoanodes by the efficient surface hydroxylation strategy.

Fe2O3/BiVO4 heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst with excellent dye degradation performance prepared by ultrasonic-assisted calcination

Li Jingjing,You Junhua,Wang Zhiwei,Zhao Yao,Xu Jingsheng,Duan Mingyi,Zhang Hangzhou

A series of Fe 2 O 3 /BiVO 4 composite photo-Fenton catalysts were prepared by a simple ultrasonic-assisted calcination method. By changing the calcination temperature, FB-2 with tetragonal structure BiVO 4 has excellent photo-Fenton performance. The crystal structure and chemical composition of the composite catalyst were studied by a series of characterizations. Under 5 W LED illumination, 97% rhodamine B dye (Rh B) was degraded within 40 min in FB-2 sample, which was attributed to the high efficiency of photogenic electron–hole pair separation. The subsequent capture experiment and Tafel test proved that h + , e − , ·OH were the main active substances in the degradation process and the flow direction of electrons in the reaction process. The composite catalyst has good cyclic stability and efficient photo-Fenton catalytic degradation performance, and has good reference value for the degradation of water dyes.

Synergistic effect of atom doping and heterojunction: Promoted photoelectrochemical water splitting performance of Zr-CoF2/BiVO4

Kaiyi Chen,Liang Zhang,Xin Huang,Fuchun Zhang,Gangqiang Zhu,Qizhao Wang

Zr-doped BiVO 4 photoanodes modified with CoF 2 co-catalyst (Zr-CoF 2 /BiVO 4 ) were designed and synthesized by a simple two-step hydrothermal and calcination method. The photocurrent density of the prepared Zr-CoF 2 /BiVO 4 photoanode is as high as about 3.6 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (AM 1.5 G). The excellent PEC performance benefits from the cocatalyst loading and the formation of heterojunction . The Zr-CoF 2 /BiVO 4 composite photoanode improves the transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers and the yield of water splitting. Co 2+ site in the CoF 2 co-catalyst has excellent water oxidation activity. The metal Zr doping further improves charge separation and conduction, thereby reducing the electron-hole complexation rate to affect PEC performance, enhancing photocurrent as well as oxygen release and providing an effective reference method for exploring solar water decomposition. This scheme provides an effective reference method for exploring solar water decomposition.

Jiancong Zhang,Yang Zi,Wei Shan,Prayoon Songsiriritthigul,Min Luo,Than Zaw Oo,Mono Zaw,Nyein Wint Lwin,Su Htike Aung,Guangguo Ying,Fuming Chen

Nowadays, stable photoelectrochemical seawater desalination is a challenge. In this work, an environmentally friendly WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode is reported to achieve stable solar-driven redox desalination . The WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode was prepared by the hydrothermal method and drop-casting and the cathode is the activated carbon coated on graphite paper. Within the desalination system , the I − /I 3 − redox species are recycled between anode/cathode chambers. In the short-circuit state, with illumination as the driving force, the salt removal rate of 65.03 μg/(cm 2 ·min) is obtained without the electric consumption. During the desalination process, the energy output process can be implemented with a salt removal rate of 29.8 μg/(cm 2 ·min) with constant current discharge. Importantly, the solar desalination system based on WO 3 /BiVO 4 photoanode is quite stable. Within the five cycles, the variation of the salt removal rate is within 3.32 μg/(cm 2 ·min). As the practical application, the seawater is desalted to the freshwater standard using the current system, in which the conductivity decreases to 0.96 mS/cm from 53 mS/cm. This work provides a feasible approach to developing stable and efficient solar-driven seawater desalination for long-term usage.

Cu3(PO4)2/BiVO4 photoelectrochemical sensor for sensitive and selective determination of synthetic antioxidant propyl gallate

Ye Cui,Xu Songmin,Wu Zhen,Wang Minqiang

Propyl gallate (PG) as one of the most important additives has been widely used to prevent or slow the oxidation of foods in the food industry. In this work, Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /BiVO 4 composite is synthesized through two hydrothermal processes. With visible light irradiation, the Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /BiVO 4 composites modified PEC platform displays a superior anode photocurrent signal. The PEC sensor showed a wide linear range from 1 × 10 −10 to 1 × 10 −3  mol L −1 with a detection limit as low as 0.05 × 10 −10  mol L −1 . The Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /BiVO 4 photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is designed and characterized by electrochemical impedance. Compared with GCE/BiVO 4 and GCE/Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , the GCE/Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /BiVO 4 has a higher photocurrent response. In addition, the sensor is highly selective for samples containing other antioxidants. Furthermore, the sensor can be used to detect PG in edible oil samples with satisfactory results. The recoveries of propyl gallate in edible oil ranged from 95.5 to 101.8%. The results show that Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /BiVO 4 composites can be used to analyze PG in different edible oil samples, which are beneficial for food quality monitoring and reduce the risk of PG overuse in food. A visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on the BiVO4/FeOOH photoanode for dopamine detection

Yuhuan Wang,Dengchao Wang,Shuqing Dong,Jianyu Qiao,Zhixing Zeng,Shijun Shao

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis technique provides a unique route for sensitive biomolecular detection. In this paper, a novel visible-light-driven PEC sensor for detection of dopamine (DA) was fabricated based on ultrathin FeOOH cocatalyst modified nanoporous BiVO 4 photoanode. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) technique was employed to characterize the photocatalytic activities of the as-prepared photoanodes surfaces, and the first-order heterogenous electron transfer rate constants ( K eff ) were evaluated, which further revealed the photocatalytic performance of the modified photoanodes in water oxidation and the PEC sensing mechanism. A remarkable water oxidation photocurrent on the ITO/BiVO 4 /FeOOH photoanode could be achieved and served as anodic photocurrent of blank sample for PEC sensing dopamine (DA), which showed linearly range of 0.2–40 μM and 40–1400 μM with a detection limit of 0.09 μM. This method showed simplicity, high sensitivity and selectivity, high stability and wide linearity range, which provided a promising platform for the development of PEC sensor and offered an insight into the exploitation of BiVO 4 -based photolysis water materials for PEC bioanalytical purposes.

Design and fabrication of ternary BiVO4/FeVO4/Cu2O nanorod array photoelectrode for boosting photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Sitong Liu,Wenzhong Wang,Ying Cheng,Lizhen Yao,Yuhong Liu,Mingjuan Lin,Huabin Chen,Yujie Liang,Junli Fu,Lijuan Wang

In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the construction of a ternary BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /Cu 2 O nanorod array (NRA) photoelectrode via seed-assisted refluxing, hydrothermal and successive ionic-layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method and its photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation performance. The energy band structures of the BiVO 4 , FeVO 4 and Cu 2 O show that two type-II band alignments with a ladder-like structure are formed in the constructed ternary BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /Cu 2 O NRA photoelectrode, enabling the photoelectrode to display substantially enhanced PEC performance. The constructed ternary photoelectrode loaded with the optimized Cu 2 O nanoparticles achieves a zero-bias photocurrent density of 50 μA cm −2 , 5 times higher than that of the pure BiVO 4 NRA photoelectrode. The measurements of optical property reveal that the constructed BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /Cu 2 O nanorod arrays (NRAs) demonstrate improved light absorption capability. The electrochemical impedance and photoluminescence measurements confirm that the charge carriers of the BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction NRAs are transferred and separated effectively. The substantially boosted PEC water oxidation activity of the constructed ternary BiVO 4 /FeVO 4 /Cu 2 O heterojunction NRA photoelectrode is ascribed to the improved light harvesting and effective charge separation.

Enhanced photocatalytic nitrogen fixation in BiVO4: constructing oxygen vacancies and promoting electron transfer through Ohmic contact

Libo Wang,Mohan Li,Shiyu Wang,Tingting Zhang,Fengyan Li,Lin Xu

The problem of energy crisis promotes the development and utilization of materials related to the application of solar energy. Employing solar energy for clean photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an effective approach to replace the high-energy consumption Haber–Bosch nitrogen fixation method to alleviate the energy crisis. In this article, mulberry-like BiVO4 containing oxygen vacancies (OVs–BVO) was prepared by the solvothermal method. In order to further elevate the catalytic effect of the catalyst, Ag nanoparticles with uniform distribution were loaded on the surface of OVs–BVO by the photodeposition method. A variety of survey techniques were performed to characterize the properties of the materials, including XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, XPS, EPR, DRS, PL and Kelvin probe study. The results show that the subband (defect level) generated by the presence of OVs can accommodate low energy electrons to activate the adsorbed N2. Ag nanoparticles firmly attached on the surface of OVs–BVO produced a strong local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, which promoted the utilization of light energy and the effective separation of electron–hole pairs. The electrons have no interfacial barrier to overcome during the transfer between Ag and BVO due to their Ohmic contact. The application of Ag loaded OVs–BVO as a catalyst provides a new direction for the study of catalysts in the field of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Multi-Walled CNTs/BiVO4 Heterostructures for Solar-Driven Evaporation System and Efficient Photocatalytic Activity against Oxytetracycline

Muneerah Alomar,Naila Arshad,Muhammad Sultan Irshad,Shaimaa A. M. Abdelmohsen,Iftikhar Ahmed,Nawal Alhoshani,Areej S. Alqarni

Developing a sustainable environment requires addressing primitive water scarcity and water contamination. Antibiotics such as oxytetracycline (OTC) may accumulate in the environment and in the human body, increasing the risks to the ecosystem. The treatment of polluted water and the production of potable water can be achieved in a variety of ways, including photodegradation, solar distillation, and filtration. Freshwater supplies can be increased by implementing energy-efficient technologies for the production of clean water. Solar water evaporation combined with photocatalytic degradation and sterilization offers a promising avenue for integration into the clean water and energy production fields. The present study reports the synthesis of a 3D solar steam generator comprised of BiVO4and carbon nanotubes (CNT) nanocomposite decorated over a cigarette filter as the light-to-heat conversion layer for solar steam generation. The BiVO4@CNT-based 3D solar evaporator over the hydrophilic cellulosic fibers of the cigarette filter endowed excellent evaporation rates (2.36 kg m−2h−1) under 1 kW m−2solar irradiation, owing to its superior hydrophilicity and broadband solar absorption (96%) equipped with localized heating at microscale thermal confinement optimized by the minimum thermal conductivity of the overall system. Furthermore, the BiVO4@CNT composite exhibited a heightened photo activity up to 83% of the photodegradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) antibiotic due to the inhibition of charge recombination from the industrial effluents. This approach transforms the water-energy nexus into a synergistic bond that offers opportunities to meet expected demand, rather than being competitive. Keywords:solar evaporation;BiVO4;MWCNTs;photocatalytic;freshwater;oxytetracycline

Fabrication of fibrous BiVO4/Bi2S3/MoS2 heterojunction and synergetic enhancement of photocatalytic activity towards pollutant degradation

Long-Gui Peng,Hui Wang,Jun Liu,Meng Sun,Fu-Rong Ni,Meng-Jie Chang,Hui-Ling Du,Jie Yang

A novel fibrous BiVO 4 /Bi 2 S 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction is facilely constructed by simple electrospinning and hydrothermal processes. Bi 2 S 3 was formed concurrently along with the hydrothermal synthesis of MoS 2 on to the porous structure of BiVO 4 fibers. The BiVO 4 /Bi 2 S 3 /MoS 2 (BBM) heterojunction is organized with MoS 2 nanosheets of several layers in thickness encapsulating both on the Bi 2 S 3 nanorod around 40 nm in diameter and fibrous BiVO 4 template. The BiVO 4 /Bi 2 S 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction shows significant enhancement of visible light absorption in the region of 500–800 nm and photocurrent of 3 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 . By adjusting the precursor concentration of MoS 2 , the optimized BBM-2 sample presents 4.9 and 9.5 times higher of the photodegradation efficiency and apparent reaction rate constant respectively, than that of pure BiVO 4 fibers after 120 min under visible light irradiation . The present work will provide a new strategy to the design of Bi-contained nanofibrous heterojunctions with high photocatalytic activity for the applications in energy storage and conversion.

CoFe prussian blue decorated BiVO4 as novel photoanode for continuous photocathodic protection of 304 stainless steel

Jiangshan Li,Yuxiao Chu,Chuanqun Zhang,Xiao Zhang,Chenqi Wu,Xianqiang Xiong,Lujia Zhou,Chenglin Wu,Deman Han

The development of efficient photocathodic protection system requires highly active and robust light-absorbing electrodes for promoting the electron transfer from the light-absorber to the protected metal. Herein, we present an extremely active and stable CoFe prussian blue (CoFe-PB) modified BiVO 4 film prepared by sequentially dipping the BiVO 4 film in K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] and CoCl 2 solution, which can realize the long-term protection of 304 stainless steel under simulated solar illumination. Particularly, the photocathodic protection process can be operated in a scavenger-free environment. Our mechanism studies reveal that the CoFe-PB overlayer acts as the hole storage layer which can effective extract the photo-generated holes from the BiVO 4 photoanode, and meanwhile works as an efficient catalyst that overcome the slow water oxidation barrier at the electrode/liquid interface, and thus greatly increase the electron lifetime, thereby enhancing the photocathodic protection capability. Our work provides a rather simple and effective design strategy for constructing semiconductor/electrocatalysts system for the underlying photogenerated cathodic protection application.

The photocatalytic activity of GO-modified BiVO4 for the degradation of phenol under visible light irradiation

Ruijie Yang,Jiansheng He,Minli Niu,Yingying Fan,Rongshu Zhu

In recent years, using graphene to modify BiVO 4 has become a research hotspot. However, there are few reports on the effects of the graphene size and the loading content on the photocatalytic activity of the graphene-modified BiVO 4 . In this work, a series of BiVO 4 photocatalysts modified by oxide graphene (GO) of different sizes and loadings were prepared, characterized and their activities were investigated. The results showed that when the size of GO was 5–7 μm and the loading was 0.5 wt%, the phenol degradation rate over the GO-modified BiVO 4 was the best and reached 65.2% after 5 h visible light irradiation.
