Selective detection of Escherichia coli based on BSA/CNTs/ UIO-66-NH2 molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors

Jiaqi Niu,Jinhui Liu,Ping Guo,Min Du,Wanqing Wu,Ziyang Zhang,Ye Ning,Dedi Zhou,Haidong Cao

As a common contaminating bacterium, Escherichia coli (E. coli) has caused severe harm in various fields such as food, healthcare, and the environment. Traditional detection methods for Escherichia coli, owing to factors like high cost and low efficiency, are unable to meet the detection requirements at the present stage. Therefore, the development of a simple, rapid, and highly efficient detection method for Escherichia coli represents an urgent issue that needs to be addressed promptly. This study focused on the development of a highly selective molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for E. coli. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared by electropolymerization on the surface of glassy carbon electrode using o-phenylenediamine as the functional monomer, aminated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the composites, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was added into the polymer film to attenuate the non-imprinting effect. The linear range of the sensor was 10-10 7 CFU/mL and the detection limit was 5.2 CFU/mL. Good recovery rates were shown in real samples of drinking water, milk and orange juice. In addition, the good binding ability of the E. coli template molecule to the functional monomer o-phenylenediamine was verified by molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. This study was able to detect E. coli in 20 min, which provides a more open idea for the application of rapid detection of E. coli on-site, as well as the construction of molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors and the analysis of the binding mechanism between template molecules and functional monomers.

Thermostable CNTs@Au NPs nanocomposites for high-temperature assisted SERS molecular fingerprinting of two natural folates

Zhou Yang,Lingling Dai,Fangfei Liu,Kun Jia,Zhiyuan Ren,Yanmei Yang,Qingmeng Zhang,Weifeng Li,Ming Chen

Background Folate is an essential nutrient, but its bioavailability varies greatly depending on the molecular form present in food. The intake of forms that are not readily absorbed by the human body may lead to insufficient folate levels, particularly during pregnancy, thereby increasing the risk of birth defects. As a result, it is essential to develop a highly sensitive and accurate method capable of distinguishing between the two most common natural folates, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) and 5-formyltetrahydrofolate (5-FTHF), to ensure proper folate intake and health outcomes. Results In this study, a photochemical method was employed to load gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs), successfully synthesizing CNTs@Au NPs nanocomposites that exhibit excellent thermal stability and robust surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. These nanocomposites, capable of maintaining structural integrity at temperatures as high as 400 °C, serve as highly effective substrates for in situ high-temperature SERS detection. Using this reliable high-temperature-assisted SERS approach, the structural changes of both folates at elevated temperatures were effectively monitored, enabling clear molecular fingerprinting and distinct differentiation between the two natural folates. Moreover, the CNTs@Au NPs demonstrate exceptional sensitivity, achieving a detection limit as low as 10 -8 M for both 5-MTHF and 5-FTHF, enabling accurate quantification of mixed folate samples and demonstrating reliable performance in real sample analysis. Significance The CNTs@Au NPs with in situ high-temperature SERS capabilities show great potential for various analytical applications. In particular, they provide an effective method for monitoring the quality of folate in dietary supplements and fortified foods, thus contributing significantly to the safety and quality assurance of folate products in the market.

Vacuum freeze-drying-assisted synthesis of spinel ferrite/CNTs for enhanced catalytic thermal decomposition of KClO4

Ren Wen-long,Huang Qian,Wang Yi-kai,Zhang Ming-xing,Guo Kai-ge,Zhang Cheng-chen,Zeng Yu-yang,Lin Zhi-wen,Xiong De-hao,Zhu Chen-guang

Potassium perchlorate (KClO 4 ), as a vital energetic oxidizer, has its application in propellants and other fields limited by its inherently high decomposition temperatures. To overcome this limitation, this study employs a freeze-drying-assisted assembly strategy to successfully synthesize ferrite/carbon nanotube (MFe 2 O 4 /CNTs, M = Cu, Co, Ni) composites. Material characterization techniques, including SEM, XRD, and XPS, confirmed the morphology, crystal structure, elemental chemical states, and surface oxygen speciation. Differential thermal analysis demonstrated that the prepared composites significantly reduce the thermal decomposition temperature of KClO 4 and substantially decrease the activation energy. Among them, CoFe 2 O 4 /CNTs exhibited the optimal catalytic performance, lowering the decomposition temperature from 615.4 to 492.6 ℃ at a heating rate of 10 ℃ min −1 . Mechanism analysis via the reaction function Z(α) revealed that the decomposition of pure KClO 4 follows a three-dimensional nucleation and growth mechanism (Avrami–Erofeev model). In contrast, the introduction of CoFe 2 O 4 /CNTs shifts the rate-controlling step to a three-dimensional diffusion mechanism (D3 model), indicating that the catalyst reshapes the decomposition pathway by accelerating the diffusion of gaseous intermediates. The enhanced catalytic performance originates from multiple synergistic effects: the redox activity of the spinel structure, the activation of oxygen species by surface oxygen vacancies, and the accelerated electron transport facilitated by the three-dimensional conductive network constructed by the CNTs. Furthermore, combustion tests of the energetic material confirmed that incorporating 3 mass% CoFe 2 O 4 /CNTs catalyst shortened the combustion time by 57.2%, expanded the flame propagation area, increased the combustion temperature, and led to a more stable combustion profile.

Lubrication Mechanisms of a Nanocutting Fluid with Carbon Nanotubes and Sulfurized Isobutylene (CNTs@T321) Composites as Additives

Jiju Guan,Chao Gao,Zhengya Xu,Lanyu Yang,Shuiquan Huang

Developing high-efficiency lubricant additives and high-performance green cutting fluids has universal significance for maximizing processing efficiency, lowering manufacturing cost, and more importantly reducing environmental concerns caused by the use of conventional mineral oil-based cutting fluids. In this study, a nanocomposite is synthesized by filling sulfurized isobutylene (T321) into acid-treated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with a liquid-phase wet chemical method. The milling performance of a nanocutting fluid containing CNTs@T321 composites is assessed using a micro-lubrication technology in terms of cutting temperature, cutting force, tool wear, and surface roughness. The composite nanofluid performs better than an individual CNT nanofluid regarding milling performance, with 12%, 20%, and 15% reductions in the cutting force, machining temperature, and surface roughness, respectively. The addition of CNTs@T321 nanocomposites improves the thermal conductivity and wetting performance of the nanofluid, as well as produces a complex lubricating film by releasing T321 during machining. The synergistic effect improves the cutting state at the tool–chip interface, thereby resulting in improved machining performance.

CuFe-MOF-Derived Heterostructures on G/BPNS/CNTs Frameworks for Microwave Absorption and Polystyrene Bead Foam Welding

Zhang Yanji,Zhu Qicai,Yang Siyi,Han Zhuoxi,Xu Zhiyong,Xie Yuhui,Wu Feng,Mei Yi,Xie Delong,Feng Dong

A key challenge in lightweight broadband electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption is balancing strong attenuation, good impedance matching, and structural integrity─excessive conductivity enhances dielectric loss but often causes severe surface reflection that blocks wave penetration. Herein, a 3D x CuFe/GPC heterostructure was constructed by anchoring bimetallic CuFe-MOF derivatives onto a G/BPNS/CNT hybrid conductive framework, where G, P, and C represent graphite, black phosphorus nanosheets, and carbon nanotubes, respectively. CuFe-MOF derivatives provide magnetic-dielectric loss, BPNS introduce phosphorus-related polarization sites, and graphite/CNT meshes build long-range conductive pathways, with CNTs acting as one-dimensional bridges. This coordinated design enables the optimized 0.1CuFe/GPC composite to achieve an RL min of −46.3 dB at 2.1 mm and an EAB of 4.03 GHz at 1.3 mm. RCS simulations based on a PEC plate model show an RCS reduction exceeding 30 dB. Beyond EMW absorption, 0.1CuFe/GPC serves as a microwave-to-thermal transducer for rapid expandable polystyrene (ePS) foaming, producing lightweight multifunctional foams with robust mechanical integrity. This work provides a practical route toward integrated electromagnetic protection and lightweight structural-functional materials.

Plug-and-Play Multilayer Impedance Engineering in Dry-Processed CNTs/PI/PTFE Films for Broadband Microwave Absorption

Yunzhi Li,Yufeng Wu,Kai Huang,Hehe Wei,Yunjian Guo,Xinyu Xie,Chang Li,Tianyi Wang,Hsiang-Shun Chang,Yiqian Zhou,Yan Feng,Zhongyin Tian,Jianchun Xu,Kai Zhang,Xiaoping Wu,Ke Bi,Hui Wu

Broadband microwave absorbing (MA) materials that are lightweight and thin are highly desirable for advanced electromagnetic protection applications. Multilayer absorber architectures offer an effective route to broaden absorption bandwidth via stepwise impedance matching, yet film fabrication processes for incorporating powder absorbers often suffer from limited scalability and thickness controllability. Herein, we report a solvent-free dry-process strategy to fabricate MA films. Polyimide (PI) is employed as the dielectric matrix, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the lossy phase, and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as the binder, which forms a continuous 3D microfibrillar network under mechanical shear. This dry-processed approach affords uniform filler dispersion, precise thickness control, and high mechanical integrity without solvent-induced phase separation. Benefiting from the well-defined thickness and modularity of the dry-processed films, multilayer absorbers are fabricated via alternating stacking of the films with low-density dielectric foam layers. The resulting structure delivers an effective absorption bandwidth of 12.45 GHz at a total thickness of about 6 mm, spanning the X-Ku frequency range. This work demonstrates that dry-processed film fabrication coupled with multilayer impedance engineering offers a scalable preparation pathway toward broadband, lightweight, and customizable microwave absorbers.

Facile Fabrication of Silicone Rubber/Hollow Microsphere/CNTs Foams for Efficient Electromagnetic Wave Absorption and Thermal Insulation

Guantong Wang,Hongjie Kang,Hongli Zhu,Xiaoyue Hu,Shaoshuai Shi,Kuan Jiang,Shan Wang,Hongyu Gong

Considering the severity of electromagnetic pollution together with practical requirements in the real world, the development of versatile electromagnetic wave absorbers is imperative. Herein, phenyl silicone rubber/hollow microsphere/CNTs (SR/HM/CNTs) foams were successfully produced via a simple preparation process. Owing to the polarization mechanisms, leakage pathways, and 3D porous structure, SR/HM/CNT foams possess high dielectric loss capability for electromagnetic wave attenuation. Notably, the SR/HM/CNTs foam with 15 wt% filler content exhibits effective absorption across the entire X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −37.77 dB at 9.89 GHz. The mechanism of electromagnetic wave absorption shows that strong absorption performance stems from significant conductive loss, multiple attenuation pathways, and favorable impedance matching. Meanwhile, SR/HM/CNTs foams exhibit lightweight (0.301–0.356 g/cm 3 ) and possess low thermal conductivity (0.085–0.136 W·m −l ·K −l ) owing to their closed-cell structure. The suppressed heat transfer confers infrared stealth, underscoring their potential in defense-related uses. Overall, this work proposes an easily implemented strategy for constructing multifunctional, high-performance microwave absorbers. Highlights SR/HM/CNTs foams were prepared using expandable microspheres as foaming agent. SR/HM/CNTs foams had effective absorption bandwidth in the full X band. SR/HM/CNTs foams possess thermal insulation features for infrared stealth.

Synergism between oxygen vacancies and Fe-Nx in N-doped Fe3O4@CNTs for enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Xiaojun Zhou,Wenwen Yang,Chunmei Zeng,Hejun Gao,Yunwen Liao,Kunpeng Song

·N-doped Fe 3 O 4 @CNTs with Fe-Nx and oxygen vacancies was fabricated for efficient ORR electrocatalysis. • The catalyst shows onset potential of 0.87 V and superior stability toward oxygen reduction reaction. • Zinc–air battery delivers 173.90 mW·cm −2 power density and stable running for 280 h. • Synergy of oxygen vacancies and Fe-Nx sites boosts ORR activity and structural stability. A composite catalyst consisting of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles coated with nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe 3 O 4 @CNTs) was synthesized via in situ pyrolysis using heme-modified CNTs. Benefiting from the CNT coating and oxygen vacancies, the catalyst exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.88 V for oxygen reduction in alkaline media, with stability surpassing commercial Pt/C. In zinc-air batteries, it achieves a power density of 173.90 mW·cm −2 and maintains stable operation over 280 h. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the CNT coating provides a 3D conductive network, prevents Fe 3 O 4 agglomeration, and modulates the electronic structure of the active-sites via Fe–N interactions. Meanwhile, abundant oxygen vacancies are introduced into Fe 3 O 4 , optimizing O 2 adsorption and reducing reaction barriers. This work offers new insights into the design of iron-based oxide electrocatalysts with high activity and durability for renewable energy applications.

Preparation of PVA/PAAm/CNTs conductive hydrogel strain sensors for grasping recognition and rehabilitation-oriented motion monitoring

Zhang Yuhong,Wu Renjie

In this study, a polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylamide/carbon nanotubes (PVA/PAAm/CNTs) conductive hydrogel film was prepared through a simple one-pot precursor solution-casting route. The PVA/PAAm/CNTs composite hydrogel exhibited an interconnected porous network, and CNTs were dispersed within the hydrogel matrix to form continuous conductive pathways. The strain-sensing performance of the hydrogel sensor was systematically investigated. The sensor showed a high gauge factor of 6.34 in the low-strain range of 0–10% and low electrical hysteresis of 0.3% ± 0.2% (mean ± SD), indicating good sensitivity and cyclic response stability. The sensor was further applied to human joint motion monitoring and object-grasping recognition, demonstrating its capability to capture dynamic strain signals under wearable conditions. In addition, a proof-of-concept comparison of knee flexion–extension between one healthy volunteer and one stroke patient showed that the sensor could record representative differences in motion amplitude and signal patterns. These results suggest that the PVA/PAAm/CNTs conductive hydrogel sensor has potential for wearable motion monitoring and rehabilitation-oriented signal acquisition, although larger-scale subject studies are still required for clinical validation.

An electrochemical sensor for caffeic acid based on in-situ grown Co-MoO2@C/CNTs composite material

Maoheng Fei,Zixun Huang,Caiyu Ge,Zhifang Liu,Jiejun Li,Xiang Ye,Yixi Xie,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei

The development of efficient and sensitive electrochemical sensors for caffeic acid (CA) detection is critical for food safety and human health monitoring. However, conventional metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives often suffer from particle agglomeration and limited electrical conductivity. Herein, we propose a novel in-situ growth strategy to construct a core-shell Co-MoO 2 @C composite, which is further integrated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to achieve a “dispersive-supportive-catalytic” trifunctional sensing platform. Specifically, ZIF-67 was grown in situ on MoO 3 nanorods to form a core-shell MoO 3 @ZIF-67 precursor. Upon pyrolysis, this unique structure effectively prevented the agglomeration of Co nanoparticles and generated abundant Co-Mo-O active sites and heterojunction interfaces. The subsequent incorporation of CNTs not only constructed a highly conductive network but also significantly increased the electroactive surface area (3.65 mm 2 ) and adsorption capacity (1.744 nM·cm −2 ) via synergistic effects. The limit of detection (LOD) of the Co-MoO 2 @C/CNTs/GCE sensor for CA was 8.4 × 10 −10  M under the most suitable conditions. This work provides a new paradigm for designing MOF-oxide‑carbon ternary composites for advanced electrochemical sensing applications.

Multifunctional integrated CNTs/Si-Zr hybrid phenolic aerogel composites with excellent thermal protection and microwave absorbing properties

Huadong Fu,Yong Xie,Rui Chen,Wenzhen Qin,Xiu Wang,Yan Qin

Designing multifunctional integrated materials for thermal protection and microwave absorption in extreme environments is significantly challenging. In this work, surface-hydroxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (OH-MWCNTs) were incorporated into silicon-zirconium (CNTs/Si-Zr) hybrid phenolic aerogel to fabricate lightweight composites having a density of 0.42 g/cm 3 and thermal conductivity of 0.130 W/(m·K). The OH-MWCNTs enhanced the graphitization of pyrolytic carbon and promoted in situ formation of ZrO 2 /SiC multiphase ceramic layers during ablation, demonstrating an ultralow linear ablation rate of 0.034 mm/s under oxyacetylene flame at 2.0 MW/m 2 . The hierarchical porous structure of the hybrid aerogel composites, combined with the encapsulation mosaic architecture of OH-MWCNTs and ceramic-enriched matrices, facilitated multiple electromagnetic wave scattering and interfacial polarization. Consequently, the OH-MWCNTs incorporated CNTs/Si-Zr aerogel composites exhibited broadband microwave absorption, covering 100 % of the Ku-band and 50 % of the X-band. This work demonstrates a synergistic ceramic-forming strategy to integrate thermal protection and microwave absorption in a single material, advancing the development of multifunctional aerogel-based composites for extreme environment applications.

In situ construction of lightweight CF/CNTs with compatible thermal performance toward sandwich structures for hypersonic vehicles

Wang Qian,Chen Bo-Wen,Ni De-Wei,Liu Fu-Chen,Cai Fei-Yan,Liao Chun-Jing,Wang Hong-Da,Ding Yu-Sheng,Dong Shao-Ming

The sandwich structure with ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) skin and carbon form (CF) core is the ideal thermal structural components with excellent thermal protective and lightweight properties in hypersonic vehicles. However, the temperature gradient and mismatch of thermal conductivity between CMC skin and CF core result in the thermal stress in sandwich structures. Therefore, core material CF with matching thermal conductivity have become very important to prevent cracks and debonding of the sandwich structure. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced carbon foam composites with different microstructure were fabricated using simple phenolic resin foaming followed by CVI process. The prepared CF display a very low density of 0.075 g/cm 3 and a relatively high compressive strength of 1.65 MPa. By controlling the distribution position and content of CNTs the thermal conductivity of core materials CF/CNTs (4.93 W·m − 1 ·K − 1 which is ~ 13 times higher than that of CF) can be regulated to compatibility with CMCs skin (3.5 ~ 6.0 W/m·K). And the thermal conductivity evolution mechanisms of the CF/CNTs from room temperature to 1200 ℃ were revealed. High interfacial thermal resistance by phonon scattering between the CF and CNTs blocks the solid conduction of materials at room temperature. With the increase of the temperature, radiative heat transfer between CF and CNTs becomes more violent and dominates the heat transfer path. The C/CMCs-CMCs sandwich structure was fabricated quickly by the in situ foaming method.
