Enhanced adsorption-catalysis strategy with COF-Ti3C2 photocatalyst for simultaneously inactivating antibiotic resistance bacteria and degrading antibiotic resistance genes

Tianyu Wang,Yong Yang,Muyu Li,Panjie Li,Sai Xu,Kan Zhang,Gen Zhang,Jinyou Shen

Antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in pharmaceutical wastewater pose serious threats to human health and ecosystems. Traditional disinfection methods have limitations in removing ARB and ARGs, and advanced oxidation processes are hampered by the competition of dissolved organics for reactive species. Herein, we propose a synergistic enhanced adsorption-catalysis strategy by integrating Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets into covalent organic framework (COF) based heterojunction photocatalyst. The excellent electronic conductivity of Ti 3 C 2 promotes electron capture from photoexcited COF, enhancing charge separation and the generation of reactive species. In-situ characterizations confirm Ti-O-P covalent bonding between DNA phosphate skeleton and Ti sites promote ARGs adsorption. This advanced system achieves 99.9 % inactivation of antibiotic-resistant E. coli and 98.9 % simultaneous ARGs degradation, with peak abundance of extracellular ARGs reduced 72.4 % of control without Ti 3 C 2 . In a continious-flow reactor operated for three consecutive 12 h cycles, the prepared photocatalyst realizes consistent inactivation and degradation including ARB, ARGs and antibiotics of pharmaceutical wastewater. This work provides new implications for controlling resistance risk spread during sewage disinfection.

An artificial neural network model based on CDs@MOF/COF composites for the ultra-sensitive fluorescence detection of glyphosate

Yingfei Hui,Yuli Wei,Hao Guo,Mingyue Wang,Liping Peng,Borong Ren,Yanyan Ma,Wu Yang

Glyphosate (Gly) overuse threatens public health and ecosystems, necessitating highly sensitive detection. This work developed a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe, CDs@Cu-MOF/TMTA-COF, by integrating carbon dots (CDs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). We encapsulated CDs within Cu-MOF in-situ grown onto sp 2 ‑carbon conjugated TMTA-COF. Gly binding to Cu 2+ causes MOF structural collapse, releasing CDs and enhancing its fluorescence at 425 nm. Simultaneously, Gly inhibits competitive absorption and acceptor-photoinduced electron transfer process between TMTA-COF and Cu-MOF, increasing COF fluorescence at 550 nm. This dual-signal change enables ratiometric Gly detection from 0.2 to 40 μM, with a detection limit of 0.07 μM. This probe was successfully used to measure Gly in soil, Yellow River water and soybean (recoveries: 95.3–104.1 %). Additionally, the back propagation neural network further enables fast detection of Gly. This work demonstrates the potential of MOF/COF hybrids for fluorescence sensing for pesticide analysis and paves the way for intelligent sensing platforms.

Construction of Broad-Spectrum-Responsive D–A Type COF Photocatalysts with Mechanistic Insights into Visible-Light-Driven Tetracycline Degradation

Xinru Dong,Yang Li,Xuejun Zhang,Nan Liu,Peng Gao

A donor–acceptor (D–A) covalent organic framework (CoPcPA-COF) was constructed from a metal phthalocyanine donor and a polycarboxylic acid acceptor unit. Molecular structure modulation endowed the material with exceptional visible-light absorption (bandgap: 1.34 eV) and a strong photoelectronic response. In photocatalytic tetracycline degradation, CoPcPA-COF achieved 91.1% removal within 60 min and maintained stable performance in various real water matrices, demonstrating excellent environmental adaptability. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis revealed pronounced spatial charge separation (CT ratio: 88.97%), a high exciton binding energy (4.314 eV), and a ligand-to-metal charge transfer tendency. Density of states (DOS) calculations indicated a theoretical bandgap of 0.5 eV, corroborating its broad-spectrum light response and favorable electronic structure. This work provides a theoretical foundation for the development of visible-light-driven COF photocatalysts and offers a promising strategy for efficient remediation of antibiotic contamination in water.

Haitong Wang,Cunxiang Bo,Bingxin Xu,Yu Liu,Mengping Zhang,Xinyuan Zhao,Liqun Song,Hua Shao,Cuijuan Wang

•AuNPs-modified COF on a portable 25-well plate for testing DIF and FLU residues. • •Integration of adsorption and SERS functions for streamlined analyses. • • Portable, on-site detection system enabling field-ready pesticide monitoring. • • Ready-to-use, pretreatment-free SERS assay delivering real-time results. We developed a ready-to-use surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensor for rapid, pretreatment-free detection of difenoconazole (DIF) and flusilazole (FLU) in peach and lychee juices. The substrate combines Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with covalent organic frameworks (COF) and is implemented on a portable 25-well plate, enabling in situ testing. Juices can be directly applied to the SERS-active Au/COF composite, allowing simultaneous adsorption and signal generation. The correlation between SERS intensity and logarithmic concentration yielded R-values between 0.925 and 0.986, meeting the monitoring needs of non-laboratory scenarios. The entire workflow completes within 12 min, offering a faster alternative to conventional methods while maintaining high sensitivity and reproducibility. Detection limits reach 0.96–1.22 ppb for DIF and FLU, both of which are below the regulatory maximum residue limits. Distinct SERS fingerprints enable reliable discrimination of mixed residues across juice matrices, supporting rapid on-site monitoring and cost-effective pesticide surveillance. Deep eutectic solvent-assisted green synthesis of a TpPa-COF-based surface molecularly imprinted polymer for selective adsorption of Myricetin

Rongpeng Yu,Qinya Huang,Wanyi Wang,Liangyin Xiang,Shakeel Zeb,Zhanchao Liu,Zheng Chuanbo,Yan Liu

This study explores the synthesis and application of a 2D block -shaped covalent organic framework(COF) and its integration into a surface molecularly imprinted polymers(SMIPs) for the selective adsorption of Myricetin(Myr) from food samples. The COF was synthesized using a binary deep eutectic solvent(DES1) composed of choline chloride and glycerol, while the molecularly imprinted polymers(MIPs) were polymerized on the surface of the COF utilizing a ternary deep eutectic solvent(DES2), consisting of choline chloride, acrylamide, and ethylene glycol. After optimizing the proportion of DESs, the resulting 50%-DES applied to COF(DC)-MIP exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 40.04 mg/g within 0.5 h at pH 6.0. The adsorption process, characterized by Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetics, was exothermic. The XPS and UV–Vis spectra confirm the adsorption mechanisms, indicating that Myr adsorption onto the COF-based MIP was predominantly driven by hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions. Due to the COF serving as the matrix material, which enhances the structural stability and solvent resistance of the polymer, the 50%-DC-MIP demonstrated excellent recyclability, maintaining consistent performance over five cycles. Because of excellent selectivity, the 50%-DC-MIP was effectively employed to grape juice, bayberry juice and green tea resulting in satisfactory recoveries of 94.67% to 102.25%, 93.75% to 108.33% and 97.33% to 101.15%, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of COF-based MIPs for the selective extraction and detection of bioactive compounds like Myricetin in complex food samples, aligning with green chemistry principles by utilizing DES as environmentally friendly solvents.

Construction Platform for Preparation of Chiral COF@Silica Core–Shell Stationary Phase via Ugi and Click Reactions for HPLC Enantioseparation

Simeng Yan,Xindan Zheng,Jiawei Liu,Quan Bai

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs) have potential application in enantioseparation due to their advantages, such as large surface area, abundant chiral recognition sites, and good chemical stability in organic solvents. However, due to the lack of essential active groups in COFs structures, it is challenging to introduce chiral ligands, which poses a challenge to the preparation and promotion of CCOFs. In this study, a strategy was developed to prepare CCOF@SiO2 core–shell microspheres for enantioseparation using the Ugi and click reactions. Imine-linked COF@SiO2 core–shell microspheres were synthesized in situ by using nonporous silica microspheres as the core and TAPB-DMTP-COF as the COF shell. This shell was formed by covalently conjugating 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 2,5-dimethoxyterephthalaldehyde (DMTP). The carbon–carbon double bond was introduced into the COF framework through the Ugi multicomponent reaction in the presence of 4-pentenoic acid and cyclohexene isocyanate. The olefin-linked Ugi-COF@SiO2 microspheres were then reacted with thiolated chiral ligands such as β-CD-SH, captopril, and l-cysteine to produce CCOF@SiO2 core–shell microspheres via the “thiol–ene” click reaction. These CCOF@SiO2 microspheres were used as stationary phases to separate various racemic compounds in the normal phase and reversed-phase liquid chromatography modes. The columns with different chiral ligands showed excellent chiral recognition and separation capabilities for chiral compounds with good reproducibility. The successful applications highlight the potential of using the Ugi and “thiol–ene” click reactions to incorporate double bond active groups and different chiral ligands into the imine-linked COFs framework. This study’s proposed strategy is versatile and offers a broad platform for the preparation and applications of CCOFs in enantioseparation.

In situ-grown ambient-temperature dual-emissive RhB/COF@ZIF-90 composite for ratiometric fluorescence detection of tetracycline in foods

Chenyang Wang,Cuiyu Huang,Licheng Yu,Xiwen He,Langxing Chen,Yukui Zhang

In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on dual-emissive RhB/COF@ZIF-90 composite was fabricated for ratiometric detection of tetracycline (TC) residues in foods. To mitigate the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect of TAPB-DMTA COF, ZIF-90 on TAPB-DMTA COF composite was fabricated by an in situ growth strategy. Rhodamine B (RhB) was subsequently encapsulated within the ZIF-90 framework to construct a dual-emission fluorescent probe. When TC was present, the fluorescence signal at 460, 525 and 570 nm increased linearly with the amount of TC. The I 570 /I 460 and I 525 /I 570 ratio signals were demonstrated in the two linear ranges of 5–100 nM and 0.1–20 μM concentrations of TC, respectively. This multi-signal sensor exhibited a low detection limit of 0.29 nM, enabling highly sensitive detection of TC. Furthermore, this work paves the way for developing other MOF/COF hybrids as multi-emission fluorescent sensors for application in antibiotic sensing in foods.

Layered COF@Au integrated with pH-responsive DNA triple helix to construct recyclable SERS substrate achieving ultrasensitive detection of ofloxacin

Runzi Zhang,Xiaoyu Yang,Shunbi Xie,Bo Wu,Yao Liu,Yi He

Herein, target-induced catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) integrate with a pH-responsive DNA triple helix structure is first used to construct a recyclable layered covalent organic framework ( L -COF) @Au as a SERS substrate for the ultrasensitive detection of ofloxacin (OFL). Firstly, a large specific surface area and abundant -NH 2 groups of the L -COF serves as an ideal carrier for Au NPs, enabling the generation of a strong and uniform electromagnetic field. Meanwhile, target-triggered catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) is utilized to activate an efficient DNA walker system, thereby achieving significant amplification of the SERS signal. Notably, pH-responsive folding and unfolding of the DNA triplex can enables capture and release of the SERS tag (Au@4-NTP@Ag) to achieve regeneration of the SERS substrate, thus allowing multiple reuse cycles. Furthermore, a synergistic plasmonic enhancement effect was realized between the COF@Au substrate and the SERS tag, resulting in a broad dynamic detection range from 1.0 × 10 −13 mol/L to 1.0 × 10 −6 mol/L and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 5.79 × 10 −14 mol/L. The biosensor demonstrates accurate quantification in real food samples, confirming its practical applicability. In addition, the methodology simplifies experimental procedures and reduces operational costs. Overall, this study presents a highly selective and responsive sensing approach for constructing renewable SERS-based biosensors, providing a robust and prospective platform for the monitoring of antibiotics in food safety applications.

Construction of MOF-on-COF with multifunctional sites for efficient capture and sequestration of radioactive iodine in high-humidity environments

Aiguo Feng,Libo Yang,Chengsong Zhong,Bihong Chen,Hao Chen,Jinyu Wu,Xiangbiao Yin,Xinpeng Wang

Radioactive iodine has garnered extensive attention due to its severe hazards to human health and the environment. However, the ubiquitous presence of water vapor during iodine vapor capture significantly impairs the adsorption performance. This often leads to reduced activity or even deactivation of adsorbents. To achieve efficient iodine capture and stable immobilization under high-humidity conditions, this study constructed an environmentally friendly MOF-on-COF architecture (Tp-UiO) with multifunctional sites and a three-dimensional framework using the in-situ growth of a metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH 2 ) on a three-dimensional scaffold of a covalent organic framework (Tp-Azo). Among the samples, the 200Tp-UiO sample exhibited a saturation adsorption capacity of 2585 mg/g under dry static adsorption conditions. This result represented a 261.5% and 55.1% improvement compared to UiO-66-NH 2 and Tp-Azo, respectively. The saturation adsorption capacity reached 2004 mg/g at a relative humidity of 74%, exceeding that of most reported adsorbents. Moreover, after iodine uptake and 7 days of storage, the iodine retention rate remained greater than 95%. A series of detailed characterizations confirmed that the excellent adsorption performance was attributed to the construction of the unique pore structure and the synergistic interactions among multiple functional sites (N − H, N = N, C O, and Zr−O groups). This study elucidated the feasibility of the MOF-on-COF composite structures for radioactive iodine adsorption in high-humidity environments and offered a novel perspective for the field of radioactive iodine capture.

In situ grown MOF/COF dual-emission composite as ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform for rapid detection of nitrofuran in foods

Chenyang Wang,Haiyang Wang,Xiaozhi Li,Shumin Wang,Xiwen He,Langxing Chen,Yukui Zhang

MOF/COF composites merge the properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), thus holding great promise for the dual-emission fluorescence sensing applications. In this work, COF TAPA-TFPB and NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) were integrated to form a MOF/COF TAPA-TFPB composite using a simple and safe room-temperature synthesis approach. The resulting composite not only mitigates the stringent synthesis conditions typically associated with COFs but also suppresses the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect of COFs, and effectively coordinates the fluorescence properties of both MOFs and COFs as well. The quenching of both emission peaks at 435 nm and 580 nm was observed as the analyte concentration increased. Based on this dual-response, a ratiometric probe was constructed using the intensity ratio I 435 /I 580 . The resulting ratiometric platform rapidly detects nitrofurans (NFs) within 5 min, shows a linear response from 0 to 100 μM with a detection limit of 0.057–0.102 μM. This work expands the synthetic approach to MOF/COF composites, facilitating their development as multi-emission sensors in detecting various pollutants.

Scavenger-Free and High-Efficiency Photoreduction of Concentrated Cr(VI) via MOF@COF Heterojunctions: The Role of Interfacial Charge Transfer

Chen Wang,Maoning Xu,Quanqi Yang,Ye Li,Wanjing Jia,Zhengwen Han,Jianjun Wang

UiO-66 exhibits exceptional stability compared to other metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), while its amino-functionalization enhances photocatalytic performance. Similarly, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) like the cyano-containing HDU-105 serve as ideal photocatalytic platforms due to their optoelectronic properties and ability to improve charge separation. In this study, we designed a series of core-shell structured UiO-66-NH2@HDU-105 heterojunctions for the efficient photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). We systematically investigated the optimal combination ratio, finding that a MOF@COF mass ratio of 2:1 achieved a maximum reduction efficiency exceeding 99 %, significantly outperforming individual UiO-66-NH2 (31 %) and HDU-105 (36 %). Mechanistic studies revealed that the composite operates via a Z-scheme charge transfer pathway, electrons transfer from the conduction band of UiO-66-NH2 to the valence band of HDU-105, while h⁺ accumulates in the UiO-66-NH2 region. Under acidic conditions, electrons attached to HDU-105 can directly reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Furthermore, the UiO-66-NH2@HDU-105 composite demonstrated excellent selectivity and long-term stability in both laboratory settings and real water matrices (groundwater and surface water). Ultimately, this study presents a viable design strategy for developing efficient and robust photocatalysts for heavy metal remediation.

Boosting charge transfer of COF/g-C3N4 composites for highly synergetic photocatalytic removal of U(VI), Cr(VI) and BPA

Sun Yubing,Zeng Nalan,Zhu Weiyu,Tang Shuai,Lu Xirui

The combined pollution of radionuclides, heavy metals and organics during uranium mining (i.e., association/coexist with heavy metals) or reprocessing of spent fuel (i.e., organic extraction) has become a prominent issue nowadays. Herein, the synergetic removal mechanism of U(VI), Cr(VI) and bisphenol(BPA) on porous covalent organic framework/graphitic carbon nitride (COF/g-C 3 N 4 ) was investigated using optical, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Compared to g-C 3 N 4 (1%), the high photocatalytic reduction (77%) and the excellent stability (90% after 5 recycles) of U(VI) on COF/g-C 3 N 4 could be attributed to the highly efficient separation of photogenerated carrier and wide response range of COF/g-C 3 N 4 under visible light (low band gap of 1.98 eV). In the ternary system, the increased removal of U(VI) on COF/g-C 3 N 4 was due to the consumption of h + by Cr(VI) and BPA, whereas the further increase of Cr(VI) and BPA inhibited U(VI) removal due to the competition of active sites. The interaction mechanism of U(VI) on COF/g-C 3 N 4 was ascribed to superoxide radicals by trapping and XPS analysis. These findings are crucial for the actual application of COF/g-C 3 N 4 on simultaneous removal of radionuclides, heavy metals and organic in complexed systems. Graphical abstract
