Near-infrared responsive sulfur vacancy-rich CuS nanosheets for efficient antibacterial activity via synergistic photothermal and photodynamic pathways

Shudi Mo,Yunhua Song,Meihong Lin,Jianling Wang,Ze Zhang,Jingyu Sun,Donggang Guo,Lu Liu

Defect engineering has been proven to be an effective approach for electronic structure modulation and plays an important role in the photocatalytic performance of nanomaterials. In this study, a series of CuS nanosheet sulfur vacancies ( V S ) are constructed by a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. The CuS with the highest V S concentration exhibits strong antibacterial performance, achieving bactericidal rates of 99.9% against the Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria under 808 nm laser irradiation. Under illumination, the temperature of the catalyst increases from 23.5 °C to 53.3 °C, and with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 41.8%. For E. coli and B. subtilis , the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production that is induced by the CuS group is 8.6 and 9.6 times greater, respectively, than that of the control group. The presence of V S facilitates the enhancement of the light absorption capacity and the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, thereby resulting in improved photocatalytic performance. The synergistic effect of photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is aimed at causing oxidative damage and leading to bacterial death. Our findings provide an effective antibacterial strategy and offer new horizons for the application of CuS catalysts with V S in the NIR region.

CuS Nanosheets Decorated with CoS2 Nanoparticles as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution at All pH Values

Mancong Li,Yongteng Qian,Jimin Du,Haoran Wu,Linyu Zhang,Gang Li,Kaidi Li,Weimin Wang,Dae Joon Kang

The design and fabrication of eco-friendly, highly efficient, and non-noble-metal-based catalysts are demanding challenges in energy-conversion technologies. Herein, we successfully synthesized CuS nanosheets decorated with CoS2 nanoparticles through a facile route. The optimized 3% CoS2-7% CuS catalysts exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic performance, with excellent cyclic stability at all pH values for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). They exhibited lower Tafel slopes (46, 52, and 59 mV dec–1) and smaller overpotentials (62, 85, and 106 mV) at 10 mA cm–2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1 M KOH, and 0.5 phosphate buffer aqueous solutions, respectively, than other CoS2/CuS, pure CoS2, and pure CuS catalysts. We attribute their high electrocatalytic performance to their unique heterostructure and the synergistic effects between the constituent metal sulfides that provides a large interfacial contact area, numerous charge-transfer pathways, as well as abundant surface reaction active sites, enhancing the charge-carrier transfer during the HER activity.

Heterodimensional structure with enhanced interface loss for microwave absorption and EMI shielding

Guan Hong-Zhou,Wang Zhan-Zhan,Wang Meng-Qi,Zhai Hua-Zhang,Cao Mao-Sheng

The study of high-performance multifunctional electromagnetic materials is one of the inevitable challenges in the field of electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption. In order to improve the attenuation ability of EMW and broaden the frequency range of absorbing materials, rational design of material structure and interface is an important way to optimize the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB). Therefore, enhanced-interface and strongly polarized CuS/Ti 3 C 2 T X composites were successfully synthesized by in-situ etching, sacrificial template and freeze-drying techniques. Its EMW absorption performance was improved by optimizing the hybridization ratio and loading content. The maximum reflection loss of CuS@Ti 3 C 2 T X (mass ratio = 5:5) is −54.6 dB and the maximum EAB covering the major of Ku band is 4.72 GHz due to the interface polarization, multiple scattering and dipole polarization. In addition, the electromagnetic interference shielding performance of CuS@Ti 3 C 2 T X (mass ratio = 3:7) is up to 23.9 dB. A new heterodimensional structure was developed by the spherical structure and lamellar, which realizes the broadband EMW absorption and electromagnetic protection.

Multipath charge transfer in Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO2 double p-n heterojunction hollow octahedrons for enhanced photocatalytic amine oxidation

Yaxin Ru,Yajie Chen,Xinyan Yu,Qiuyu Zhang,Yuejia Yin,Guohui Tian

Hollow heterostructured catalysts have been widely investigated and applied in photocatalytic organic reactions. However, achieving hybrid catalysts with optimized hollow structure and controllable components is still a challenge. Herein, Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 ternary heterostructure hollow octahedrons were designed and prepared using a copper-based metal–organic framework (Cu-BTC) as both copper source and template. A thin CeO 2 nanolayer was first formed and covered on the prepared Cu-BTC octahedron surface through a hydrothermal process. In the meanwhile, the Cu-BTC octahedrons were controllably etched in this hydrothermal process, leading to the formation of Cu-BTC@CeO 2 hollow octahedron. The following sulfidation reaction produced Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 double p-n heterojunction hollow octahedrons. Benefiting from the novel hollow octahedron double p-n heterojunctions, excellent visible-near infrared light absorption, and fast charge transfer and separation, the obtained Cu-BTC@CuS@CeO 2 hollow octahedron hybrid catalyst exhibited a significantly higher photocatalytic activity toward the oxidative coupling of amines to imines at room temperature under visible-near infrared light irradiation compared to the control single component catalysts (Cu-BTC, CeO 2 , and CuS) and binary hybrid catalysts (Cu-BTC@CeO 2 , Cu-BTC@CuS, and CuS@CeO 2 ). The enhanced charge transfer at the double p-n heterojunction was discussed. Meanwhile, the photocatalytic oxidation products and reaction mechanism were investigated by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and pyridine adsorption FT-IR spectroscopy. This work presents a promising strategy for the design of multi-component hollow heterostructure catalysts.

Dual-functional SnS2–CuS heterostructure for zinc anode protection and conversion-type anode toward advanced aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Shaoyan Huang,Shuling Liu,Sha Fan,Rui Su,Deliang Tian,Zili Deng,Jinbao Li,Jianbo Tong

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) face critical challenges including poor cycling stability, zinc dendrite growth, and low zinc utilization. To address these issues, a multifunctional SnS2–CuS heterostructure is proposed, serving both as a zinc anode protective layer in conventional AZIBs and a metal-free anode in rocking-chair zinc-ion batteries (RCZIBs). In AZIBs, the SnS2–CuS heterostructure generates a synergistic effect between different phases. This effect improves interfacial charge transfer efficiency, guides the oriented deposition of Zn2+ along the (001) crystal plane of SnS2, and optimizes Zn2+ migration kinetics. When deployed as the anode for RCZIBs, the elaborate heterostructure construction efficiently alleviates the severe volume expansion of CuS during repeated charge–discharge cycling, while interfacial charge polarization derived from heterogeneous coupling further accelerates the electrochemical reaction kinetics. To clarify the electrochemical mechanism, in situ XRD, in situ EIS, DRT analysis, and ex situ XPS are used to track phase transitions and interfacial dynamic processes. Density functional theory calculations also theoretically verify that the SnS2–CuS heterostructure significantly enhances Zn2+ storage capability. Electrochemical tests show that the assembled RCZIB delivers a discharge specific capacity of 179.03 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, retaining 114.51 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles. Moreover, it maintains 83.6% of its initial capacity after 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1, demonstrating outstanding cycling stability. This study achieves the compatible application of the SnS2–CuS heterostructure in both AZIBs and RCZIBs and highlights its considerable potential for next-generation high-performance energy storage systems.

Dual-defect engineered CuS/NiTiO3 S-scheme heterojunction with strengthened built-in electric field for boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Heng Zhang,Jialu Li,Renjie Lu,Huidong Shen,Lihong Wang,Feng Fu,Yucang Liang

Sulfur/oxygen dual-vacancy CuS-S v /NiTiO 3 -O v S-scheme heterojunction was successfully fabricated. • Built-in electric field accelerates electron transfer in sulfur/oxygen-vacancy heterojunction. • Cu centers in CuS-S v accumulate electrons for CO 2 reduction while NiTiO 3 -O v enriches holes in CuS-S v /NiTiO 3 -O v . • Optimized 5% CuS-S v /NiTiO 3 -O v heterojunction exhibits highest CO evolution rate (490 μmol g −1  h −1 ). • Photocatalytic mechanism is proposed for CO 2 reduction. Harnessing solar energy for the photocatalytic CO 2 reduction into valuable fuels presents a sustainability strategy to simultaneously alleviate the global energy crisis and mitigate carbon emission. However, the efficiency of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction is hindered by weak adsorption and sluggish charge separation in semiconductor materials. Herein, a sulfur/oxygen dual-vacancy engineered CuS-S v /NiTiO 3 -O v S-scheme heterojunction is constructed to achieve a remarkable CO production rate of 490.0 μmol g −1  h −1 with 89.1% selectivity. Experimental results reveal that sulfur vacancies probably strengthen CO 2 adsorption and activation, while oxygen defects induced interfacial charge redistribution at the S-scheme heterojunction interface by intensifying the built-in electric field, promoting efficient separation and migration of photogenerated charge carriers. Density functional theory calculations further uncover that sulfur vacancies (S v ) are beneficial to CO 2 adsorption and activation while promoting the stabilization of the key *COOH intermediate, thereby favoring the CO 2 reduction reaction. Moreover, oxygen vacancies (O v ) promote charge redistribution and facilitate charge transfer across the heterojunction interface onto CuS-S v . In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) calculations clarify the reaction pathway, showing that the synergistic interaction of sulfur and oxygen vacancies efficiently decreased the energy barrier for *CO formation by reinforcing the interaction between *COOH intermediates and the catalyst surface. This study highlights a synergistic strategy combining defect engineering and S-scheme heterojunction design to achieve highly selective and efficient photocatalytic CO 2 to CO conversion. The deliberate introduction of sulfur/oxygen dual vacancies induces electron redistribution within the CuS-S v /NiTiO 3 -O v S-scheme heterostructure, concentrating electrons Cu sites and localizing charge on Ni. The built-in electric field drives interfacial transfer, enriching Cu centers that enhance C O activation and accelerate key intermediate formation. Zhenzhen Chen,Qian Zhang,Lingjun Zeng,Jialiang Zhang,Zhihong Liu,Minxin Zhang,Xueting Zhang,Hang Xu,Hongtao Song,Chun Tao

The immunotherapy played a vital role in the treatment of metastatic tumor. To further enhance the effect of the immunotherapy, the combination of photothermal effect can not only eradicate the tumor cells by hyperthermia, but also improved the antigen release in vivo to achieve enhanced immune responses. In this study, a core-shell structured nanocomplex was developed by loading of ovalbumin (OVA) and copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS-NPs) into the poly(lactide-co-glycolide acid) nanoparticles (PLGA-NPs). The CuS-NPs exhibited favorable photothermal effect, which significantly kill the 4T1 tumor cells in vitro . The photothermal effect of the CuS-NPs accelerated the OVA release, which led to higher levels of IL-6, IL-12 and TNF-α, and activation of CD8 + T cells. Both of the OVA-PLGA-NPs and CuS-NPs with NIR light irradiation contributed inhibited primary tumor while the growth of the distant tumors was not hindered. The irradiated [email protected] exhibited a minimal primary tumor because of the combined effect of photothermal therapy and immunotherapy. Moreover, the irradiated [email protected] showed the most extensive distribution of CD8 + T cells in the primary and distant tumor, which blocked the rise of the distant tumor. In conclusion, the [email protected] presented as a promising strategy for metastatic tumor therapy.

Synergistic engineering of porous P-doped CuS/CNTs composite as high-performance conversion anode for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Chuanjin Lin,Guoquan Suo,Jiarong Li,Rongrong Mu,Laraib Habib,Xiaojiang Hou,Xiaohui Ye,Yanling Yang

The development of high-performance anode materials remains a critical challenge for advancing aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). While conversion-type CuS anodes demonstrate superior capacity through multi-electron redox reactions, they are hindered by sluggish Zn 2+ kinetics and structural degradation. Herein, we propose a porous P-doped CuS/carbon nanotube composite (P-CuS/CNTs) engineered through a one-step hydrothermal strategy to address these limitations. The dual-functional design combines atomic-scale phosphorus doping with three-dimensional CNTs scaffolding, creating synergistic effects including: facilitating partial Zn 2+ desolvation via P C bond formation; establishing rapid ion/electron transport pathways and buffering volume changes through mechanical reinforcement of CNTs. The optimized P-CuS/CNTs anode delivers exceptional electrochemical performance, achieving a high specific capacity of 258 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 and retaining 128 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 10 A g −1 with 98.2 % capacity retention. When paired with MnO 2 @CNTs cathodes, the full cell maintains 74 mAh g −1 after 170 cycles. This work provides fundamental insights into the desolvation-enhanced conversion mechanism while demonstrating a viable material design strategy for stable Zn-ion storage systems.

Near-infrared and pH dual-responsive chitosan/epigallocatechin gallate/hollow CuS hydrogel reprograms ROS dynamics for infected wound healing

Pami Yang,Yuancheng Liu,Qin Zeng,Shuang Zhao,Yi Zhang,Junhong Yang,Ke Yin,Wuming Wu,Chunyan Deng

Bacterial-infected wounds pose a clinical challenge requiring innovative strategies integrating precise antibacterial action and microenvironment reprogramming. To address this, a multifunctional H-CuS NPs@epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)/chitosan (CS)/3-formylphenylboronic acid (3-FPBA) hydrogel (H-CuS@EGCG HY) was engineered. This hydrogel exhibits injectability, self-healing, tissue adhesion, and pH-responsive behavior. During the initial phase of wound infection (weakly acidic microenvironment), this network undergoes controlled dissociation, enabling on-demand localized release of EGCG and Cu 1+/2+ . Under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the photothermal effect of H-CuS NPs promotes mild heating, which enhances EGCG/Cu 1+/2+ release and penetration. The released Cu 1+/2+ further catalyzes •OH generation from H 2 O 2 via Fenton reaction, synergizing with EGCG and photothermal therapy to improve antibacterial efficacy. Additionally, EGCG scavenges excess radicals, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, while Cu 1+/2+ supports angiogenesis via VEGF regulation-collectively reprogramming the wound microenvironment. In vitro tests showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with a 99 % eradication rate. In S. aureus -infected mouse models, compared to the control group, the H-CuS@EGCG HY + NIR group significantly reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α), promoted the expression of CD31 and CD206, and effectively modulated the wound microenvironment, ultimately resulting in complete wound closure (100 %) by day 13, accompanied by full epidermal regeneration and minimal scarring. This study provides a promising strategy for the treatment of clinical wounds.

Octahedral MoS2/CuS heterostructure confined in P-doped carbon with enhanced kinetics and stability for efficient sodium-ion storage

Guangsheng Dong,Zhida Yang,Binbin Gao,Zihao Zhu,Lu Tao,Wenjun Dong

The unique two-dimensional layered structure and notable theoretical specific capacity of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) make it highly competitive anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, its practical utility is hampered by sluggish Na + /electron transport kinetics and substantial volume changes. Herein, the successful synthesis of an ultrafine MoS 2 /CuS heterostructure embedded in a P-doped carbon framework (MoS 2 /CuS@C) is achieved via sulfurization of an octahedral bimetallic Mo/Cu-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) precursor. The rationale for achieving superior electrochemical performance hinges on an ingenious design: the leverage of p-n heterojunctions within the carbon framework. The p-n heterojunction of ultrafine MoS 2 /CuS can powerfully drive Na + /electron transfer, thus enhancing the reaction kinetics. Concurrently, the uniform confinement of this heterostructure within the MOFs-derived carbon framework not only supplies the mechanical robustness to withstand volume variation but also creates a highly conductive network to boost overall conductivity. Hence, the MoS 2 /CuS@C anode for SIBs exhibits exceptional cycling stability, demonstrating a capacity of 528 mAh g −1 through 3000 prolonged cycles at 10 A g −1 . Furthermore, the MoS 2 /CuS@C//Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 full cell achieves a well-maintained capacity of 44.6 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles. This work establishes a design blueprint aimed at developing efficient anodes.

In-situ fabrication of CuS/g-C3N4 nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic H2-production activity via photoinduced interfacial charge transfer

Tianjun Chen,Chengjie Song,Mingshan Fan,Yuanzhi Hong,Bo Hu,Longbao Yu,Weidong Shi

In this work, novel CuS/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalysts were successfully prepared via a simple in-situ growth method. CuS nanoparticles , with an average diameter of ca.10 nm, were well dispersed on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 , revealing that g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets were promising support for in-situ growth of nanosize materials. The CuS/g-C 3 N 4 composites exhibited highly enhanced visible light photocatalytic H 2 evolution from water-splitting compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 . The optimum photocatalytic activity of 2 wt% CuS/g-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalytic H 2 evolution was about 13.76 times higher than pure g-C 3 N 4 . The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the interfacial charge transfer (IFCT). In this system, electrons in the valence band (VB) of g-C 3 N 4 can transfer directly to CuS clusters, causing the reduction of partial CuS to Cu 2 S, which can act as an electron sink and co-catalyst to promote the separation and transfer of photo-generated electrons. The accumulated photoinduced electrons in CuS/Cu 2 S clusters could effectively reduce H + to produce H 2 . This work provides a possibility for constructing low-cost CuS as a substitute for noble metals in the photocatalytic production of H 2 via a facile method based on g-C 3 N 4 .

Iron Doped in the Subsurface of CuS Nanosheets by Interionic Redox: Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts toward the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jing Chen,Mingzheng Gu,Shoujie Liu,Tian Sheng,Xiaojun Zhang

Modifying the electronic structure of electrocatalysts by metal doping is favorable to their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, by a facile one-pot redox process of Fe(III) and Cu(I), Fe(II) was successfully doped into the subsurface of CuS nanosheets (NSs) for the first time to obtain a novel electrocatalyst (Fesub-CuS NSs) that possesses not only subtle lattice defects but also an atomic-level coupled nanointerface, greatly enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances. Meanwhile, Fe(II) and Fe(III) coexisting in Fesub-CuS nanosheets are favorable to OER through valence regulation. As expected, by simultaneously controlling the abovementioned three factors to optimize Fesub-CuS nanosheets, they display a lower overpotential of 252 mV at a current density of 20 mA cm–2 for OER, better than 389 mV for pristine CuS nanosheets. This discovery furnishes low-cost and efficient Cu-based electrocatalysts by metal doping. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further verify that Fesub-CuS(100) is thermodynamically stable and is more active for OER. This research provides a strategy for the atomic-scale engineering of nanocatalysts and also sheds light on the design of novel and efficient electrocatalysts.
