Cu(II) and Cd(II) capture using novel thermosensitive hydrogel microspheres: adsorption behavior study and mechanism investigation

Jianxin Tang,Jianmin Huang,Thein Tun,Sihua Liu,Jue Hu,Guiyin Zhou

BACKGROUND At present, various kinds of hydrogel adsorbents are applied to the treatment of heavy metal ions in wastewater. In this work, we focused on the adsorption of cadmium [Cd(II)] and copper [Cu(II)] onto microspheres of a novel thermosensitive hydrogel (NH 2 -SA/PNIPA, aminated sodium alginate/poly- N -isopropyl acrylamide), studied the effect of temperature on the phase transition of the hydrogel in detail, and discussed the influence on the adsorption behavior of metal ions in the hydrogel. RESULTS The NH 2 -SA/PNIPA exhibited a higher adsorption efficiency under the conditions of interfering monovalent cationic and neutral pH. The adsorption capacities based on the Langmuir model were 57.2 mg g –1 for Cu(II) and 100.5 mg g –1 for Cd(II) at 20 °C, respectively. Higher temperature facilitated the adsorption process and also led to the volume shrinkage and hydrophobicity of NH 2 -SA/PNIPA. The metal ions had different hydration and hence different adsorption capacities, of 56.7 mg g –1 for Cu(II) and 88.6 mg g –1 for Cd(II) at 40 °C. The results of diffusion behavior analysis showed that the diffusion coefficients were ≈1 × 10 −11 m 2 s –1 . The adsorption performance of NH 2 -SA/PNIPA hardly decreased even after five cycles. In addition, the adsorption process was controlled mainly by the complexation reaction. CONCLUSION The novel hydrogel microspheres overcame the deficiency of conventional adsorbents and possessed high diffusibility. This work provides a theoretical basis and empirical evidence for enhancement of adsorbents for removing heavy metals in wastewater. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite as an magnetic adsorbent for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment

Haoyang Fu,Hongfei He,Runliang Zhu,Lan Ling,Weixian Zhang,Qingze Chen

This work successfully fabricated a novel magnetic adsorbent, i.e., phosphate modified magnetite@ferrihydrite (Mag@Fh-P), and explored its potential application for Cd(II) removal from water, soil, and sediment. To synthesize the adsorbent, ferrihydrite-coated magnetite (Mag@Fh) was firstly developed with partially acid-dissolved natural magnetite particles, followed by in-situ synthesis of ferrihydrite on magnetite surface via alkali addition. Selection of natural magnetite as iron source for ferrihydrite synthesis and as magnetic core is believed to save the cost of adsorbent. Then, phosphate was loaded on Mag@Fh by impregnation-heating treatment to produce Mag@Fh-P. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the Cd(II) adsorption on Mag@Fh-P could reach equilibrium within 60 min, and the calculated adsorption capacity using Langmuir model was 64.1 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that on magnetite (0.44 mg/g) and Mag@Fh (23.9 mg/g). The results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and batch adsorption experiments confirmed that both ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction contributed to Cd(II) adsorption. Besides, Mag@Fh-P can also be an efficient amendment for soil and sediment remediation. The spent Mag@Fh-P could be easily recovered via magnetic separation, accompanied by the significant decrease in total Cd(II) concentration in soil/sediment. At an adsorbent dosage of 2 wt%, 0.82 and 0.74 mg/kg of total Cd(II) in soil and sediment was removed, respectively. In all, the synthesized Mag@Fh-P as adsorbent has the merits of cost effectiveness, fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity, and easy separation, and thus it has promising application for the removal of heavy metal cations from water, soil, and sediment.

Evaluation of Different Types and Amounts of Amendments on Soil Cd Immobilization and its Uptake to Wheat

Zhou Changrui,Yuan Haiyan,Ning Chuanchuan,Li Shuailin,Xia Zhuqing,Zhu Mengmeng,Ma Qiang,Yu Wantai

Using amendments is a cost-effective method to soil cadmium (Cd) remediation, whereas knowledge about how different amendments and rates affect remediation efficiency remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of different types and amounts of amendments on soil Cd immobilization and its uptake by plants. Biochar (BC), zeolite (ZE), humic acid (HA), superphosphate (SP), lime (L), and sodium sulfide (SS) were applied at three rates (low, medium, and high) ranging from 0.5 to 5%. The concentration of CaCl 2 -extractable Cd was considerably affected by the amendments, except HA, and the high doses achieved better immobilization effects than the low doses did. The addition of amendments decreased weak acid soluble Cd by 4.1–44.0% but slightly increased the fractions of oxidizable and residual Cd. These amendments (except BC and HA dose of 1%) decreased Cd accumulation in grains by 1.3–68.8% and (except SP) in roots by 16.3–65.5% compared with the control. The SP efficiently immobilized Cd but posed a potential soil acidification risk. Moreover, SS treatment increased the soil electrical conductivity (EC) value and restricted the growth of wheat, possibly due to high-salt stress. BC, ZE, and L exerted significant effects on the reduction in available Cd as the application rate increased. These amendments enhanced Cd immobilization mainly by changing Cd availability in soil and influencing its redistribution in different fractions in soil and root uptake by plants. This study concluded that BC-5%, ZE-1%, and L-0.5% can be used for Cd immobilization in acidic or neutral soils.

PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode for sensitive electrochemical detection of folic acid

Yuan Meng-Meng,Zou Jiao,Huang Zhao-Ning,Peng Dong-Ming,Yu Jin-Gang

A novel electrochemical sensor, platinum nanoparticles/graphene nanoplatelets/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/β-cyclodextrin composite (PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD) modified carbon glass electrode (GCE), was fabricated and used for the sensitive detection of folic acid (FA). The PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD nanocomposite was easily prepared with an ultrasound-assisted assembly method, and it was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The electrochemical behavior of FA at PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD/GCE was investigated in detail. Some key experimental parameters such as pH, amount of PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD composite, and scan rate were optimized. A good linear relationship ( R 2  = 0.9942) between peak current of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and FA concentration in the range 0.02–0.50 mmol L −1 was observed at PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD/GCE. The detection limit was 0.48 μmol L −1 (signal-to-noise ratio = 3). A recovery of 97.55–102.96% was obtained for the determination of FA in FA pills (containing 0.4 mg FA per pill) at PtNPs-GNPs-MWCNTs-β-CD/GCE, indicating that the modified electrode possessed relatively high sensitivity and stability for the determination of FA in real samples. Effects of fulvic acid and montmorillonite colloids at different concentrations on Cd(II) sorption onto nano-hydroxyapatite

Mengmeng Wu,Limei Mo,Erping Bi

Natural colloids can influence the binding mechanisms between nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) and Cd(II). In this study, the effects of organic and inorganic natural colloids on Cd(II) sorption onto nHAP were compared. Different experimental approaches combined with the additivity model and the Extended-Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey–Overbeek model were used to quantify the distribution of Cd(II) in the systems of nHAP and natural colloid, and the interaction energy between particles. The results showed that both fulvic acid (FA) and montmorillonite colloid (MONT) had the promotion and inhibition effects on Cd(II) sorption onto nHAP. Coexistence of FA or MONT could stabilize nHAP particles. FA could adsorb onto nHAP particle surface via carboxylic and phenolic groups, which increased nHAP electronegativity and formed steric resistance effect. Coexistence of MONT mainly increased nHAP electronegativity. These effects prevented the reduction of the specific surface area of nHAP particles and increased the Cd(II) sorption onto nHAP. However, the inhibition effect on Cd(II) sorption was enhanced with increasing concentration of FA or MONT because more soluble FA-Cd or suspended MONT-Cd complexes formed in the system. In nHAP-FA-Cd systems, the Cd(II) sorption onto FA was well predicted but that onto solid phase was underestimated by the additivity model. In nHAP-MONT-Cd systems, Cd(II) sorbed onto mixtures of nHAP and MONT was well described by the additive model. The findings of this study can help to understand the fate of Cd(II) in natural water and soil.

Chen Mei-Ling,Qiu Yun,Xu Ling,Tan Juan

This paper reports two new Cd(II)-based coordination polymers which are formulated as {[(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Cd(btc)]} n ·n(DMF) ( 1 ) as well as [Cd 3 (btc) 2 (2-bpmh)(H 2 O) 6 ]} n ·3n(H 2 O) ( 2 ) (H 3 btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid, 2-bpmh =  N , N -bis-pyridin-2-ylmethylene-hydrazine) under the solvothermal reaction conditions, compounds 1 – 2 exhibit intense luminescence emission and excellent photocatalytic property for MB decomposition under the light irradiation of UV. For the children lobar pneumonia treatment, we use ELISA detection kits to determine the TNF-α and IL-1β levels released by the lung epithelial cells. In addition to this, we can also determine the NF-κB’s activation levels by real-time RT-PCR.

Facile fabrication of rape straw biomass fiber/β-CD/Fe3O4 as adsorbent for effective removal of ibuprofen

Guangyu Wu,Qi Liu,Jingyi Wang,Siye Xia,Hualong Wu,Jiaxiang Zong,Jiangang Han,Weinan Xing

Wastewater containing pharmaceuticals can be bioaccumulated, posing a potential risk to drinking water, human health, and ecosystems. In order to make the adsorption process more suitable for actual application, rape straw biomass fiber (treated by an acidified sodium chlorite solution, 5%) and Fe 3 O 4 embedded β-CD to prepare a novel adsorbent (RSBCDF), which was used for the removal of ibuprofen (IBP) from aqueous solution. The RSBCDF was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and zeta potential measurements. The synthesized adsorbent was studied with regard to IBP removal percent under different adsorption conditions such as varying initial pH levels (4–10), initial ibuprofen concentrations (20−160 mg/L), contact time (5−150 min), and the dosage of adsorbent (10−100 mg) via batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms were also investigated. The IBP adsorption behaviour followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained for ibuprofen was 48.29 mg/g. The values of Gibbs free energy change were negative (-2.58∼-3.56KJ/mol), suggesting that the process of ibuprofen adsorption onto adsorbent was spontaneous. The positive value of standard enthalpy change (12.09 kJ/mol) indicated that the adsorption process was endothermic. The obtained results prove that RSBCDF is a proficient and economically suitable material for removing IBP from water environments.

Mechanism study about the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) with iron-trimesic metal-organic frameworks

Bao-Lin Zhang,Wei Qiu,Pan-Pan Wang,Yu-Lei Liu,Jing Zou,Lu Wang,Jun Ma

This study examined the effects of two kinds of iron-trimesic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [MIL-100(Fe) and Fe-BTC] on adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II). For both materials, adsorption of Pb and Cd nearly approached equilibriums in the initial 2 min with high pseudo-second-order kinetics rate constants (0.895 g·mg −1 ·min −1 for Pb and 1.416 g·mg −1 ·min −1 for Cd). Both materials showed better adsorption performance with the increase of solution pH (from 2 to 7). Adsorption processes were endothermic, entropy-increased and spontaneous. The higher enthalpy change ( Δ H 0 ) and entropy change ( Δ S 0 ) values for Cd adsorption reflected the more difficult adsorption of Cd compared with Pb, which is related with more negative hydration enthalpy ( Δ H hyd Θ ) and larger ionic radius of Cd. Multilayer adsorption phenomena appeared with no maximum adsorptive capacity observed. Both Langmuir-Freundlich and Freundlich-BET models could well describe isotherms. Multilayer adsorption may be attributed to the formation of inner-sphere complexation and outer-sphere complexation. Bockris-Devanathan-Muller (BDM) electrical double layer theory was used for illustrating adsorption mechanism. The fixed-bed adsorption experiments with Fe-BTC showed outstanding elimination performance in initial operating period (>99.8% for Pb and >99.6% for Cd), with effective filtration volume of 980 mL for Pb and 300 mL for Cd. Recyclability test showed that Fe-BTC could be well regenerated by ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na). This study showed that MIL-100(Fe) and Fe-BTC are potential for practical heavy metal removal applications.

A novel smartphone-based CD-spectrometer for high sensitive and cost-effective colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid

Liubing Kong,Ying Gan,Tao Liang,Longjie Zhong,Yuxiang Pan,Dmitry Kirsanov,Andrey Legin,Hao Wan,Ping Wang

As a powerful tool for medical diagnosis and bioanalysis , conventional optical spectrometers are generally expensive, bulky and always require an accompanying data processing device. In this work, we developed a novel smartphone-based CD-spectrometer (SCDS) for high sensitive and ultra-portable colorimetric analysis , with the advantage of cost-effective and simplicity. The distance between the light source and slit, the structure of SCDS and the parameters of camera in the smartphone were all optimized to ensure the best analytical performance. Besides, the SCDS employed HSV color model and utilized the overall intensity calculated by summing V-value of adjacent position for the absorbance measurement. In this way the errors caused by the low resolution of CD-grating can effectively be eliminated to promote the sensitivity of the SCDS. The performance of the SCDS was first validated for colorimetric detection of BSA with a detection limit of 0.0073 mg/mL, which is superior compared to that of the microtiter plate reader (MTPR). Moreover, by combining with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine-manganese dioxide (TMB-MnO 2 ) nanosheets reaction, a high sensitive and specific system for ascorbic acid detection was established. The SCDS gives a detection range from 0.6250 μM to 40 μM with a detection limit of 0.4946 μM for AA detection. Compared to other studies, the SCDS features wide detection range and very low detection limit with low cost instrument. Therefore, the SCDS will be an ideal and promising colorimetric system for point-of-care (POC) application in food security, disease diagnosis and environmental monitoring.

Preparation of pervious concrete with 3-thiocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane modified fly ash and its use in Cd (II) sequestration

Peng Liu,Yining Gao,Fazhou Wang,Lu Yang

Heavy metal contamination is an important environmental issue . Heavy metal removal by cementitious materials would be an efficient method because of their large-scale exposure to rainwater and groundwater. In this study, 3-thiocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (TCPS)-modified Fly ash (T-FA) beads were prepared and incorporated into pervious concrete . The functionalized pervious concrete was used to sequester Cd (II) from solution, utilizing the chelating property of the thiocyanate on TCPS. TCPS molecules were chemically bonded onto FA beads after alkali activation , which was confirmed by IR spectroscopy. IR shows the vibration of Si OH and the asymmetric vibrations of CH 2 and CN on TCPS. In addition, 29 Si NMR spectroscopy identifies a new peak at −47.22 ppm assigned to T 2 [RSi(OSi) 2 OH]. T-FA beads can efficiently remove Cd (II) when immersed and stirred in a CdCl 2 solution. An equally significant sequestration capacity was demonstrated when T-FA beads were incorporated in pervious concrete. Cd (II) concentrations were reduced from 300 to 15.86 ppm when a 100 × 100 × 100 mm 3 T-FA-loaded concrete specimen was exposed to a 5 L CdCl 2 solution.

Magnetically engineered Cd-free quantum dots as dual-modality probes for fluorescence/magnetic resonance imaging of tumors

Ke Ding,Lihong Jing,Chunyan Liu,Yi Hou,Mingyuan Gao

Magnetically engineered Cd-free CuInS 2 @ZnS:Mn quantum dots (QDs) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as potential dual-modality probes for fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of tumors in vivo . The synthesis of Mn-doped core–shell structured CuInS 2 @ZnS mainly comprised three steps, i.e., the preparation of fluorescent CuInS 2 seeds, the particle surface coating of ZnS, and the Mn-doping of the ZnS shells. Systematic spectroscopy studies were carried out to illustrate the impacts of ZnS coating and the following Mn-doping on the optical properties of the QDs. In combination with conventional fluorescence, fluorescence excitation, and time-resolved fluorescence measurements, the structure of CuInS 2 @ZnS:Mn QDs prepared under optimized conditions presented a Zn gradient CuInS 2 core and a ZnS outer shell, while Mn ions were mainly located in the ZnS shell, which well balanced the optical and magnetic properties of the resultant QDs. For the following in vivo imaging experiments, the hydrophobic CuInS 2 @ZnS:Mn QDs were transferred into water upon ligand exchange reactions by replacing the 1-dodecanethiol ligand with dihydrolipoic acid-poly(ethylene glycol) (DHLA-PEG) ligand. The MTT assays based on HeLa cells were carried out to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the current Cd-free CuInS 2 @ZnS:Mn QDs for comparing with that of water soluble CdTe QDs. Further in vivo fluorescence and MR imaging experiments suggested that the PEGylated CuInS 2 @ZnS:Mn QDs could well target both subcutaneous and intraperitoneal tumors in vivo .

Effects of Cd(II) on the stability of humic acid-coated nano-TiO2 particles in aquatic environments

Wang Li,Lu Yixin,Yang Chen,Chen Chengyu,Huang Weilin,Dang Zhi

The stability of nanoparticles (NPs) in aquatic environments is important to evaluate their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Nanoparticle stability is known to be influenced by coexisting ions and dissolved organic matter. This study was designed to investigate the effects of coexisting low-level Cd(II) on the stability of humic acid-coated nano-TiO 2 (HA-TiO 2 ) particles in aquatic environments by measuring their aggregation kinetics through time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) and monitoring suspended HA-TiO 2 concentrations via optical absorbance changes over time. The particles exhibited aggregation behavior consistent with the classic Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The results showed that Cd(II) concentration, pH, and ionic strength had various effects on the aggregation kinetics of the HA-TiO 2 NPs. The HA-TiO 2 particles aggregated faster as the Cd(II) concentration increased whereas the stability of the nanoparticles increased as the solution pH increased or ionic strength decreased regardless of the Cd(II) concentration. At the fixed pH and ionic strength conditions, the addition of Cd(II) promoted aggregation of nanoparticles, leading to higher attachment efficiencies. The enhanced aggregation of the HA-TiO 2 NPs in the presence of coexisting cadmium ions in aqueous solutions indicated that the fate and transport of nanoparticles could be greatly affected by heavy metals in aquatic environments.
