In this study, cerium-doped lanthanum ferrite perovskite oxides (La 1‒x Ce x FeO 3 ) with different A-site were synthesized using a sol-gel method and they were used as ozonation catalyst for p -nitrophenol (PNP) mineralization for the first time. Catalytic activity in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) removal followed the order of La 0.8 Ce 0.2 FeO 3 > La 0.4 Ce 0.6 FeO 3 > La 0.6 Ce 0.4 FeO 3 > La 0.2 Ce 0.8 FeO 3 > LaFeO 3 with 77, 66, 61, 60 and 56% respectively. The synthesized catalysts were characterized by diffraction of X-ray (XRD), Raman spectroscopy , Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Moreover, electron spin resonance (ESR) and radicals quenching experiments showed that the active oxygen species in the ozone decomposition process are mainly hydroxyl radical (·OH), and also include superoxide radical (O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). Furthermore, the superior activity of La 0.8 Ce 0.2 FeO 3 could be attributed to the higher surface area, the richer lattice oxygen, richer surface –OH groups and the facilitated redox Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycling. In addition, this study provides an insight to use metal-doped perovskite catalysts for catalytic ozonation.

A novel catalytic system for benzene oxidation at low temperature is constructed by combining electric field with Pt-Ce-Zr nano-catalyst. The 1 wt% Pt/Ce 0.75 Zr 0.25 O 2 catalyst assisted by electric field shows the best catalytic performance with 90% benzene conversion at 96.5 °C and excellent water resistance. The effect of electric field on catalysts and catalytic process is comprehensively investigated. The results of XRD, TEM, XPS and H 2 -TPR reveal that the electric field show negligible influence on the crystal structure and surface morphology of the catalyst, but it can lead to more oxygen vacancies. Therefore, more adsorbed oxygen with higher activity will be produced on the catalyst surface. The redox performance is improved due to the fact that valence distribution of Pt is changed in forms of more active sites composed of high valence oxides (PtO) generated in electric field. In situ DRIFTS is used to investigate the oxidation process of benzene and the results prove that electric field could accelerate the production and consumption of intermediate products, and produce new intermediate products such as carboxylic acid species, indicating that the introduction of electric field may open up a new rapid reaction path and promote the activation of benzene at low temperature.

Fe-Co-Ce composite catalysts were prepared by coprecipitation method using CO(NH2)2, NaOH, NH4HCO3, and NH3·H2O as precipitant agents. The effects of the precipitant agents on the physicochemical properties of the Fe-Co-Ce based catalysts were investigated by SEM, TEM, BET, TG-DTA, and XRD. It was found that the precipitant agents remarkably influenced the morphology and particle size of the catalysts and affected the COD removal efficiency, decolorization rate, and pH of methyl orange for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO). The specific surface area of the Fe-Co-Ce composite catalysts successively decreased in the order of NH3·H2O, NH4HCO3, NaOH, and CO(NH2)2, which correlated to an increasing particle size that increased for each catalyst. For the CWAO of a methyl orange aqueous solutions, the effects of precipitant agents NH3·H2O and NaOH were superior to those of CO(NH2)2 and NH4HCO3. The catalyst prepared using NH3·H2O as the precipitant agent was mostly composed of Fe2O3, CoO, and CeO2. The COD removal efficiency of methyl orange aqueous solution for NH3·H2O reached 92.9% in the catalytic wet air oxidation. Such a catalytic property was maintained for six runs.

In this study, Ce-doped ZnO photocatalysts are successfully prepared by using a simple and facile one-pot water bath method. The as-prepared samples are characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) diffuse spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. It is found that the as-synthesized Ce-doped ZnO possessed hollow porous structure, high surface areas and large pore volumes . The photocatalytic degradation efficiency (99%) of methyl orange (MO) with an optimal molar ratio of 0.3% Ce-doped ZnO is realized. The separation behavior of photogenerated electrons-holes pairs was investigated by surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient photovoltage (TPV) technique. The results illuminate that Ce element in Ce-doped ZnO tremendously promotes the separation of charges and inhibits the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, corresponding to the excellent photocatalytic performance.

Chemical looping dry reforming of methane (CL-DRM) is a promising technology for production of syngas and the utilization of greenhouse gases, which highly relies on efficient oxygen carrier (OC) to facilitate the energy and material transfer. In this work, Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 oxygen carriers in physical and crystalline contact modes were synthesized and used for CL-DRM. The Fe 2 O 3 /CeO 2 crystal interface significantly promoted the oxygen release of both Fe 2 O 3 and CeO 2 . The completely reduced iron elements dispersed uniformly into the CeO 2 support and formed pure CeFeO 3 in the oxidation step. CeFeO 3 showed enhanced methane conversion rate (81.3 %), CO selectivity (96.6 %) and lower temperature sensitivity. The time-resolved reaction performance of Fe-Ce oxygen carriers was investigated to understand the relationship between the oxygen vacancy concentration and reactivity of Fe-Ce oxygen carrier. With the increasing concentration of oxygen vacancies, the oxygen carrier exhibited elevated activity and enhanced selectivity. The redox range of CL-DRM was then tuned to enhance the reaction conversion and product purity. In the deep reduction range of oxygen carrier, the deposited carbon also served as the active redox intermediate for chemical looping and enhanced both the reaction conversion rate and the product purity to nearly 100 %. These findings showcased rational methods for design and utilization of iron-based oxygen carriers and expanded the potential for chemical looping applications.

CaBi 2 Nb 2 O 9 (CBN) with the Aurivillius phase has a high Curie temperature ( T C ) and remarkable fatigue resistance , which has great potential for application as high-temperature sensors. However, due to its low piezoelectric properties , its practical application remains a great challenge. In this paper, Ca 1- x Ce x Bi 2 Nb 2 O 9 ceramics were prepared by the direct reaction sintering (DRS) and conventional preparation (CP) methods, respectively. The experimental results indicate that Ce doping can increase the piezoelectric coefficient d 33 of CBN ceramics by about two times. Among them, the grain size of the samples prepared by the DRS method is finer and more uniform, and the d 33 value of DRS samples is about 3.6–9.4 % higher than that of CP samples. The DRS sample Ca 0·97 Ce 0·03 Bi 2 Nb 2 O 9 has a d 33 value of 18.9 pC/N, a T C of 948 °C, and a resistivity of 1.1 × 10 5 Ω cm at 600 °C. This study shows that DRS method is an effective densification method, which can prepare CBN-based ceramics with excellent comprehensive properties, and provides an innovative preparation route to explore CBN-based ceramics with excellent piezoelectric properties.

Antibiotics that permeate aquatic environments present significant risks to both ecosystems and human health. In this study, we employed the techniques of room temperature aqueous solution precipitation to fabricate ZIF-67 derivatives, and established a Co 3 O 4 /CeO 2 /O 3 /PMS (Co-Ce/OP) system. Furthermore, a 10 mg/L Levofloxacin (LEF) solution could reach rapid degradation (97.2%) and effective mineralization (40.4%) under specific conditions. Subsequent investigations identified the primary active substances, intermediates, and reaction mechanism in the Co-Ce/OP system. Evidence from Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments indicates that SO 4 · - , OH·, O 2 · - and 1 O 2 contribute to the degradation process. Applying High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-MS), we discovered that the principal degradation mechanisms for LEF encompass the cleavage and subsequent loss of the piperazine, quinolone, and morpholine rings, in addition to decarboxylation and defluorination reactions. Besides, we studied the acute toxicity, bioconcentration factor, developmental toxicity, and mutagenicity of LEF and its intermediate products. Our findings reveal a notable reduction in the toxicity of the intermediate products relative to LEF. Later experiment demonstrates that the degradation rate of LEF sustains above 90% after five cycles of reactions, indicative that the catalyst has excellent recyclability and stability. Furthermore, this study employed experiments across four different natural water matrices, demonstrating the system's considerable potential for effective application within authentic aquatic settings.

Regulating interfacial active sites to improve peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency is a hot topic in the heterogeneous catalysis field. In this study, we develop an inverted loading strategy to engineer asymmetric Mn–O V –Ce sites for PMS activation. Mn 3 O 4 @CeO 2 prepared by loading CeO 2 nanoparticles onto Mn 3 O 4 nanorods exhibits the highest catalytic activity and stability, which is due to the formation of more oxygen vacancies (O V ) at the Mn–O V –Ce sites, and the surface CeO 2 layer effectively inhibits corrosion by preventing the loss of manganese ion active species into the solution. In situ characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) studies have revealed effective bimetallic redox cycles at asymmetric Mn–O V –Ce active sites, which promote surface charge transfer, enhance the adsorption reaction activity of active species toward pollutants, and favor PMS activation to generate (•OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 ) active species. This study provides a brand-new perspective for engineering the interfacial behavior of PMS activation.

The quest for cost-effective and efficient electrochromic electrodes, featuring high color contrast and rapid response times, has sparked increasing interest in research of metal oxides for electrochromic applications. In this study, nickel oxide thin films with various cerium dopant concentrations are synthesized, with the optimized doping concentration identified as 1 at%. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the dopant successfully reduces crystal size and alters the preferred orientation to (111). The 1 % Ce:NiO thin film exhibits enhanced electrochromic performance, with a transmittance modulation increase of 27.4 % at 633 nm, a 27.1 % rise in coloration efficiency and faster response time (t b =9.64 s and t c =6.76 s) compare to the undoped NiO. Importantly, the charge density of 1 % Ce:NiO thin film increases from 4.86 to 8.14 mC cm −2 , representing a 67.5 % improvement, which becomes a better charge matching with WO 3 in electrochromic devices. The incorporation of Ce into the NiO thin films not only leads to increased transmittance in the bleached state and optical modulation in the electrochromic devices but also contributes to a rise in the optical band gap of the NiO thin films and improved charge balance matching. These results underscore the positive impact of cerium doping on microstructure and electrochromic performance, indicating a promising future for electrochromic devices.

Designing highly effective, low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts without noble metals for overall water splitting remains a significant challenge. In this work, interfacial coupling of Ce-doped CoSe 2 nanoneedle arrays with MXene (Ce-CoSe 2 /MXene) is developed via the facile hydrothermal and selenization methods. The extensive specific surface area and favorable hydrophilicity of Ti 3 AlC 2 , combined with the optimized electronic structure and abundant active sites from Ce-doping and selenization, contribute to the exceptional bifunctional electrocatalytic performance of the Ce-CoSe 2 /MXene electrode. Specifically, this heterostructure achieves a low hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential of 34 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential of 279 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , and an overall water splitting (OWS) potential as low as 1.45 V at 10 mA cm −2 . In-situ Raman spectroscopy reveals that surface reconstruction would improve catalytic activity and stability. Theoretical calculations indicate that the Ce-CoSe 2 /MXene can improve the adsorption of intermediates and facilitate HER/OER process by lowering the kinetic barrier, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic activity. This research marks a substantial advancement in the development of low-cost, efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Photocatalysis is the most promising green approach to solve antibiotic pollution in water, but the actual treatment effect is limited by photocatalytic activity. Herein, Bi and BiOCl were loaded onto the surface of Ce-MOF (metal–organic framework) using an electrostatic adsorption method, and a special ternary heterojunction of Ce/Bi/BiOCl was successfully prepared as a photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). FTIR demonstrated that the obtained photocatalyst contains functional groups such as -COOH belonging to Ce-MOF and characteristic crystal planes of Bi and BiOCl, indicating the successful construction of a ternary photocatalyst. The results of UV–vis absorption spectra confirm that the band gap of Ce/Bi/BiOCl heterojunction is reduced from 3.35 eV to 2.7 eV, resulting in an enhanced light absorption capability in the visible light region. The special ternary heterojunction constructed by Ce-MOF, Bi, and BiOCl could achieve a narrow band gap and reasonable band structure, thereby enhancing the separation of photogenerated charges. Consequently, the photocatalytic performance of the Ce/Bi/BiOCl ternary heterojunction was significantly enhanced compared to Ce-MOF, Bi, and BiOCl. Therefore, Ce/Bi/BiOCl can achieve a photocatalytic degradation rate of 97.7% within 20 min, which is much better than Bi (14.8%) and BiOCl (67.9%). This work successfully constructed MOF-based ternary photocatalysts and revealed the relationship between ternary heterojunctions and photocatalytic activity. This provides inspiration for constructing other heterogeneous catalysts for use in the field of photocatalysis.
