Fabrication of Na, Cl co-doped graphitic carbon nitride with enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of dyes and antibiotics

Wang Kai-Li,Li Yan,Sun Tao,Mao Fang,Wu Ji-Kui,Xue Bin

Co-doping is a promising approach to change the electronic structure and increase the photocatalytic ability of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Here, we reported a facile and green fabrication of Na, Cl co-doped g-C 3 N 4 photocatalysts. In the fabrication, sodium and chlorine were incorporated into g-C 3 N 4 synchronously. The bandgap of Na, Cl co-doped g-C 3 N 4 decreased compared with pure g-C 3 N 4 and the position of the valence band moved in the direction of enhanced oxidizing power. The co-doped photocatalysts exhibited the improved visible-light absorption and the reduced recombination rate of photogenerated electrons and holes. As a result, photocatalytic activity of Na, Cl co-doped g-C 3 N 4 was remarkably improved for the photodegradation of rhodamine B and tetracycline hydrochloride under visible light irradiation. The photocatalysis mechanism of Na, Cl co-doped g-C 3 N 4 was also discussed according to the results of active species trapping experiments.

Tunable dual emission in Mn2+-doped CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br) quantum dots for high efficiency white light-emitting diodes

Weiwei Chen,Xiaosheng Tang,Zhigang Zang,Yue Shi,Zhaoqi Yang,Juan Du

Doping of Mn2+ into semiconductor nanocrystals has been demonstrated to endow them with novel electronic, optical and magnetic functionalities. In this paper, Mn-doped CsPbX3 (X = Br, Cl) quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized at room temperature via a facile strategy by introducing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-MnBr2/PbX2 composite as a precursor. The excitonic emission spectra of the as-obtained Mn-doped CsPbX3 QDs can be tuned from 517 nm to 418 nm by adjusting the ratio of PbBr2/PbCl2 precisely, and the luminescence mechanism of the doped QDs is discussed in detail. Moreover, the highest photoluminescence quantum yield of the Mn2+ emission achieves 36.7%, which is comparable with QDs prepared by the conventional hot-injection method. Depending on the ratios of PbPb2/PbCl2, the energy transfer rate from the band-edge to Mn2+ excited state is in the range of 0.006–20.42 × 107 s−1. Furthermore, white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were successfully fabricated by combining the as-prepared Mn-doped CsPbX3 QDs with commercial UV GaN chips, and the high luminous efficiency of the as-prepared white LEDs was developed to 55.9 lm W−1. This work strongly supports the fact that Mn-doped CsPbX3 QDs are promising materials for application in lighting and displaying fields.

BiOX (X = Cl, Br, I) nanostructures: Mannitol-mediated microwave synthesis, visible light photocatalytic performance, and Cr(VI) removal capacity

Guangfang Li,Fan Qin,Runming Wang,Shengqiang Xiao,Hongzhe Sun,Rong Chen

A facile microwave irradiation method has been successfully developed for the controllable fabrication of BiOX (X   =   Cl, Br, I) nanostructures in mannitol solution. The morphology and size of BiOX nanostructures could be readily tailored by adjusting the amount of halide, reaction precursor, and mannitol concentration. Mannitol molecule acts as both a capping agent and a cohesive agent in the formation of BiOX nanostructures. A possible two-stage formation mechanism was discussed based on the morphology evolution of BiOI nanostructures obtained in mannitol solution with different concentrations. The as-synthesized BiOX nanostructures exhibit much higher photocatalytic activities than that of commercial TiO 2 . In particular, flower-like BiOX hierarchical nanostructures display the best photocatalytic performance, which is mainly ascribed to their unique hierarchical structure, high BET surface area, and large band gap. Moreover, BiOX nanostructures also demonstrate superior Cr(VI) removal capacity. The Cr(VI) adsorption behavior was also analyzed by the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms.

Optimizing in-situ capture of Cl and C through HCl acidification and crystal formation in PVC-based cable pyrolysis

Zou Yanyan,Pau Dennis,Yi Linlin,Li Yaoqiang,Li Kaiyuan

13X zeolite–calcium oxide (CaO) composite capture agent application in the pyrolysis recovery of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-based waste cables was investigated in this research to elucidate the agent’s efficiency in capturing chlorine (Cl) and carbon (C) during pyrolysis. The 13X zeolite–CaO mixture is subjected to separate pyrolysis of the PVC-based cable outer sheath in experimental furnaces of simulated solar-powered and thermogravimetry. Subsequently, a range of spectroscopic techniques are employed to quantitatively analyze the gaseous and solid products resulting from the pyrolysis process. Through X-ray fluorescence, total carbon, and other analyses, the research outcomes demonstrated that the capture agent exhibits superior Cl and C capture performance compared to using a single agent for plastic pyrolysis. The yield of Cl element in the solid residue has increased significantly by 130–140% under the presence of optimized composite capture agent. By determining the dynamic changes of gaseous and solid products during the cable outer sheath pyrolysis, the influence of the capture agent on the redistribution and transformation mechanisms of Cl and C elements was identified, and it was found that contaminating volatiles were well immobilized in the solid residue. This research provides a new solution for efficient Cl and C capture in the pyrolysis recovery of waste cables and determines the fixation and transformation mechanisms of Cl and C elements by the composite capture agent, indicating a potential for feasible and sustainable resource utilization of waste cables.

Bifunctional Ligand Passivation Enables Stable Blue Mixed-Halide CsPb(Br/Cl)3 Perovskite Quantum Dots toward Light-Emitting Diodes

Yongfeng Liu,Yupeng Ying,Qingyu Xie,Zhaoju Gao,Xiuwen Shao,Min Zhou,Wei Pei,Xiaosheng Tang,Yusong Tu

Mixed-halide CsPb(Br/Cl)3 perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) have attracted extensive attention in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their low photoluminescent efficiency and especially poor stability impede their practical applications. Here, we employ bifunctional didodecyldimethylammonium thiocyanide (DDASCN) with a pseudohalogen SCN– and branched DDA+ to obtain blue-emitting CsPbBr2Cl PeQDs. DDASCN significantly boosts the photoluminescence quantum yield to 92% by inhibiting nonradiative recombination. Importantly, DDASCN PeQDs show excellent stabilities against air, UV light, heat, and polar solvents. These improved performances were explained by density functional theory calculation, which shows that SCN– fills the Cl– vacancy by simultaneously binding with undercoordinated Pb2+ and Cs+, while DDA+ connects undercoordinated Br– and lies parallel to the PeQD core, leading to efficient passivation and a strong binding capacity. Finally, we achieved high-performance white LEDs by integrating our PeQDs, resulting in a color-rendering index of 92.9, a color gamut of 119.61%, and chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). This provides an effective method to obtain efficient and stable CsPb(Br/Cl)3 PeQDs for practical applications.

Structure design and performance optimization of PVDF-CTFE nanofibrous composite nanofiltration membrane modified by C–Cl active site grafting

Wanzheng Ren,Jian Pan,Zhuoqun Li,Min Huang,Lilan Huang,Liqiang Gu,Hailin Cong

The substrate membrane plays a crucial role in determining the performance of composite nanofiltration membranes prepared by interfacial polymerization (IP). In this study, persistent hydrophilic modification of polyvinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene (PVDF-CTFE) was achieved by incorporating N-methylglucamine (N-MG) without altering the membrane's morphology or pore size. Moreover, thin-film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) nanofiltration membranes were prepared using the surfactant assembly regulated interfacial polymerization (SARIP) method with the modified PVDF-CTFE@N-MG nanofibrous membrane as the substrate. The effect of N-MG addition on the substrate membrane's hydrophilicity and the structure and performance of the polyamide (PA) separation layer was investigated. The results showed that the addition of N-MG significantly improved the hydrophilicity of the PVDF-CTFE nanofibrous membrane. The TFNC-5 membrane, prepared with the modified PVDF-CTFE@N-MG nanofibrous membrane as the substrate, exhibited permeability exceeding 13.5 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 for various dye solutions at 3 bar pressure, with rejection rates above 98 %. It also demonstrated excellent selective separation performance (separation factor for NaCl/Orange G reaching 97.38) and long-term operational stability. This work provides a method for the preparation of low-pressure, high-flux nanofiltration membranes, which is applicable to seawater desalination and dye wastewater treatment .

Nonradical degradation of antibiotics in seawater by Cl−/Br−-activated peracetic acid: Dominant contribution of 1O2 and reactive halogens

Jingzhen Su,Yong Wang,Cong Li,Zhengming He,Kai Zhang,Mingqiang Ren,Qile Wang,Tianxing Chen,Jibran Ali Ghumro,Virender K. Sharma,Hyunook Kim,Yunshu Zhang

Natural seawater contains abundant halide ions that remain largely untapped, while peracetic acid often requires activation to enhance its oxidative properties. The interaction mechanisms between these components have not been thoroughly investigated. This study investigated the activation effect of high concentrations of Cl − and Br⁻ coexisting in seawater on PAA by adding PAA to seawater. Quenching experiments, along with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and UPLC-TQ-MS, were conducted to determine the reaction mechanism and degradation process of SMX. Seawater systems containing 35 ‰ salinity or Br − -PAA systems (0.5 mM Br − ) degraded 100 % SMX within 10 min or 12 min, respectively ( k obs =0.4873 min⁻ 1 or 0.3581 min⁻ 1 ). While the Cl − -PAA system, though slower, still degraded 97.7 % within 180 min (300 mM Cl − , k obs =0.0173 min⁻ 1 ). SMX degradation rates remained above 95 % across the pH range of 3–9, with optimal performance at pH= 3. However, the presence of HA inhibited SMX degradation efficiency by over 40 %. Results indicate that SMX degradation efficiency correlates positively with Cl⁻/Br⁻ content and PAA concentration. The superior removal efficiency stems from activated PAA not only generating HOCl and HOBr via oxygen atom transfer but also further producing 1 O 2 , which dominates the non-selective degradation process. This approach adapts to a wide pH range but is consumed by coexisting HA. The superiority of the Br − -PAA system over Cl − -PAA stems from the strong oxidizing power of HOBr. The oxidation pathways include halogenation, bond cleavage, and hydroxylation. ECOSAR predictions indicated that most transformation products exhibited higher toxicity than the parent SMX compound.

Study on the adsorption mechanism of CL-20 in waste acid by silicic acid: adsorption model and DFT calculation

Yunfeng Tan,Shengqiang Ma,Nengsheng Liu,Xintao Wang,Chenxi Li,Jinmao Ma,Kun Wu,Mohe Zhang,Jinxin Liu,Jianwei Song,Jiangzhou Qin,Quanlin Zhao,Zhengfang Ye

Industrial wastewater pollution has emerged as a significant global environmental challenge, particularly regarding the urgent need to address highly acidic industrial effluents containing organic pollutants. As a novel high-energy explosive, hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) inevitably generates strongly acidic wastewater during its production and application processes, posing severe threats to ecological systems and human health. This study systematically investigates the adsorption performance of two silicon-based materials, sodium silicate (Na 2 SiO 3 ) and silicic acid (H 2 SiO 3 ), for the removal of CL-20 from wastewater. Experimental results demonstrate that the Langmuir isotherm model reveals maximum adsorption capacities of 87.21 and 69.97 mg/g for H 2 SiO 3 and Na 2 SiO 3 , respectively. Kinetic studies indicate that the adsorption processes of both materials conform to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R 2  > 0.98). Thermodynamic parameter analysis demonstrates reduced spontaneity of the adsorption process with increasing temperature, accompanied by exothermic characteristics and entropy reduction. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the mechanisms underlying electrostatic adsorption and chemical bonding interactions between CL-20 molecules and silicon-based materials are elucidated. This research establishes a novel technical approach for efficient CL-20 wastewater treatment while providing theoretical foundations for developing and optimizing related adsorption materials.

3D-printed CL-20-based energetic composites with interpenetrating polymer networks for enhanced mechanical property and microscale detonation performance

Handong Shi,Shijiao Li,Kai Han,Chuanhao Xu,Lei Gao,Fan Liao,Yanpeng Lv,Yurong Zhang,Chongwei An

This study presents a strategy for developing CL-20 (Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzita-ne)-based energetic composites with enhanced mechanical properties and intrinsic safety through the synergistic design of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) /PAA (polyacrylic acid) interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) and direct ink writing (DIW) technology. Based on the “hydrogen bond-covalent bond-plasticization” synergistic reinforcement strategy, an IPNs gel system with tunable mechanical properties was developed. After optimizing the polymer ratio (4:3), Crosslinking agent (1 %), and glycerol content (17.5 %), a balance between toughness, ductility, and strength was attained. The DIW-printed structure exhibited excellent molding accuracy and interfacial adhesion (0.924 MPa to aluminum). System characterization demonstrated that the IPN structure achieved uniform CL-20 distribution and controlled porosity, significantly enhancing its mechanical properties, safety, and detonation performance. Its elastic modulus is close to that of engineering plastics(4.504 GPa), the hardness is between soft rubber and hard plastics (0.107 GPa), and the compressive strength is higher than that of typical PBX explosives (15.64 MPa). By using PVA/PAA IPNs, a “topological entanglement-passivation defect” mechanism was established to suppress mechanical sensitivity. Compared to submicron ε-CL-20, the molded sample reduced impact sensitivity by 33.3 % and friction sensitivity by 128.6 %. Additionally, detonation propagation was achieved in a 1.2 × 1.2 mm charge slot within a 90°-160° corner range, with the critical detonation transmission size reaching 0.3 × 0.3 mm and the detonation velocity maintained at 7362 m/s (82.4 % theoretical detonation velocity). This study offers a scalable manufacturing framework for developing energetic devices that combine mechanical properties, intrinsic safety, and adaptability to complex structures.

High-Entropy Cl Substitution Promotes High Specific Capacity and Specific Energy Release from Sodium Manganate for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Kai Zhang,Peifeng Wang,Zhuohui Sun,Hongwei Zhang,Rui Chang,Youlong Xu

Poor electronic conductivity, low potential plateau, rapid capacity decay, and poor rate capability are critical challenges hindering the development of layered transition metal oxides such as P2-Na0.7MnO2. To address these issues, a high-entropy design combined with Cl substitution has been implemented, resulting in the material P2-Na0.7Li0.02K0.02Mg0.02Fe0.05Cu0.05Ni0.25Ti0.02Nb0.02Mn0.59O1.93Cl0.07. Hall effect tests reveal a transition from hole-dominated to electron-dominated conduction, significantly improving the Na+ transport kinetics, enhancing electronic conductivity, and facilitating the release of a high specific capacity and specific energy. Notably, the bulk carrier concentration increases from 1.63 × 1011 to 2.63 × 1012 cm–3, the surface carrier concentration rises from 2.47 × 1010 to 2.16 × 1011 cm–2, and the mobility improves from 322.7 to 455.9 cm2 (V s)−1. Consequently, the electronic conductivity undergoes a remarkable 20-fold increase from 8.44 × 10–6 to 1.915 × 10–4 S cm–1. The material delivers a reversible capacity of 196.80 mAh g–1 and a specific energy of 587.07 Wh kg–1 at a current rate of 0.05 C.

Promotion effect of Cl- on the decoloration of rhodamine B in Cu(II)/peracetic acid process: Performance and mechanism

Yiqing Liu,Hong Hu,Ting Wang,Chuanzeng Chen,Linghan Xu

Usually, Cu(II) cannot effectively activate peracetic acid (PAA), but it was observed that the high concentration of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process could notably promote the decoloration of rhodamine B (RhB) in the preliminary experiment. Therefore, the mechanism on the enhanced effect of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process for RhB decoloration was investigated in detail in this work. With the addition of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process, it could rapidly combine with Cu(II) to produce highly active Cu(II)-Cl n complexes, which could promote the Cu(II) reduction to Cu(I) and subsequent PAA activation. At pH 8.5, the RhB decoloration efficiency in Cl - /Cu(II)/PAA process could reach 85.8 %, and CH 3 C(O)OO • and CH 3 C(O)O • mainly contributed to the decoloration of RhB in this condition. However, at pH 4.0, reactive chlorine species were considered to be responsible for RhB decoloration in this process. The increase of Cu(II), PAA and Cl - dosage facilitated the RhB decoloration in Cl - /Cu(II)/PAA process, while the excessive Cl - inhibited RhB decoloration. HCO 3 - showed an apparent improvement effect on RhB decoloration, while fulvic acid (FA) obviously suppressed RhB decoloration. This work provides a deep insight on the facilitation effect of Cl - in Cu(II)/PAA process and a strategy to broaden PAA catalysis via Cu(II).

Red emissive N, Cl-doped carbon dots for detection of tea polyphenols and lysosomal imaging at the cellular level

Lei Cao,Tongtong Zhu,Minghui Zan,Yulu Liu,Xiaoman Xing,Qing Qian,Qian Mei,Wen-Fei Dong,Li Li

Tea polyphenols (TP), which is accounting for 15–30% of the dry weight of green tea and are widely used in the food industry as antioxidants , preservatives, color preservatives, and flavoring agents . To determine the concentration of TP, a fluorescent method based on nitrogen and chlorine co-doped carbon dots (R-CDs) was investigated. The R-CDs we prepared showed red emission with an absolute quantum yield (QY) of approximately 16.67 ± 0.85%. The limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be approximately 68 ± 0.94 ng/mL, with an R 2 of 0.999 over the TP range of 1–20 μg/mL. Compared to the ferrous tartrate standard curve method, the concentration of TP in green tea, which was purchased from the market, detected using our method showed an error within 5%, indicating good potential applications in the food industry. Cell imaging experiments suggested that the R-CDs exhibit excellent lysosomal targeting as the Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC) in colocalization analysis was found to be 0.91. Further experiments showed that owing to their excitation-independent emission and high QY, the R-CDs could be applied to not only for detecting TP content but also for targeting lysosomes as substitute for commercial dyes.
