Facile synthesis and synergistic mechanism of CoFe2O4@three-dimensional graphene aerogels towards peroxymonosulfate activation for highly efficient degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants

Xinran Li,Zhehua Liu,Yongjuan Zhu,Lan Song,Zhaojun Dong,Shu Niu,Cong Lyu

Magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 is a promising heterogeneous catalyst with great separation and catalytic performance on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. However, for extremely recalcitrant organic pollutants (e.g. Benzotriazole (BTA)), CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system exhibits much low catalytic performance and high metal ion leaching . As such, CoFe 2 O 4 supported on three-dimensional graphene aerogels (CoFe 2 O 4 @3DG) was synthesized via facile hydrothermal method. It turns out that 3DG as supporter significantly enhances specific surface area, redox activity and electron transfer of composite. The degradation rate constant in the CoFe 2 O 4 @3DG/PMS system (0.0203 min −1 ) is 15 times higher than that in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system (0.0013 min −1 ). It results from synergistic activation of PMS by CoFe 2 O 4 and 3DG to generate multiple reactive oxygen species (•OH, SO 4 − •, O 2 − • and 1 O 2 ). Particularly, high graphitization structure and low oxygen groups content of 3DG facilitate PMS adsorption on its surface and electron transfer from BTA to PMS. Ultimately, BTA is degraded into CO 2, NH 3 and intermediates through benzene and triazole ring-opening reactions. Moreover, CoFe 2 O 4 @3DG/PMS system displays good stability and recyclability . Therefore, this study provides a new way to improve CoFe 2 O 4 activity for extremely recalcitrant organic pollutants degradation and new insights into synergistic activation of PMS by CoFe 2 O 4 and 3DG, which further advances cobalt-based catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Synthesis of Co3Fe7/CoFe2O4 incorporated porous carbon catalysts via molten salt method: applications in the oxygen reduction reaction and 4-nitrophenol reduction

Yanling Wu,Xi Tang,Hui He,Qingyuan Luo,Wenkai Fu,Qinggao Hou,Haijun Zhang

Developing high-performance, multifunctional non-precious metal catalysts is essential for enhancing the efficiency of future energy utilization. In this study, four types of magnetic, recyclable Co3Fe7/CoFe2O4 incorporated porous carbon composite catalysts were synthesized using citric acid as the carbon source and ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) as the salt medium. Iron and cobalt salts, in four different proportions, were uniformly incorporated using freeze-drying technology and subsequently processed through in situ calcination. Among the synthesized catalysts, Co3Fe7/CoFe2O4@NC-1, demonstrated outstanding catalytic reduction performance, with a reaction rate constant (k) of 0.031 min−1, along with excellent cycle stability for 4-NP. The resulting Co3Fe7/CoFe2O4@NC-3 catalyst exhibited good ORR activity in an alkaline medium (Eonset = 0.99 V, E1/2 = 0.83 V, JL = −5.2 mA cm−2), along with long-term durability and resistance to methanol poisoning. These hybrid materials hold promise as non-precious metal electrocatalysts for fuel cell ORRs and introduce a new class of catalytic candidates for 4-NP reduction.

CoFe/CoFe2O4 Embedded N, S-Doped Carbon Hybrid Derived From Sulfonate Asphalt as an Efficient Counter Electrode for Quantum Dot Sensitized Solar Cell

Jianguang Jia,Yue Cui,Chunfeng Shi,Haijun Hao

Developing a sustainable and cost-effective counter electrode (CE) material with high catalytic activity is of significant importance for quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). In this work, by using the industrial residue material of sulfonated asphalt as the carbon precursor, we prepared a CoFe/CoFe 2 O 4 embedded N, S-doped carbon hybrid (CoFe/CoFe 2 O 4 @C) and applied to the CE of QDSSC. Structure analyses indicated that CoFe/CoFe 2 O 4 @C has a porous structure with large surface area. Electrochemical investigations revealed that the CoFe/CoFe 2 O 4 @C possesses high catalytic activity for polysulfide reduction. Consequently, CdSe QDSSC based on CoFe/CoFe 2 O 4 @C CE achieved a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.37%, significantly superior to the commonly used PbS CE (5.4%). This study provides a sustainable strategy for converting the industrial residue material of asphalt into a low-cost and high-performance CE material for QDSSC.

Yang Han,Yangsai Lyu,Ningning Xing,Xiaolei Zhang,Kaiyuan Hu,Hui Luo,Dickon H. L. Ng,Jia Li

Micromotors that combine the merits of micro-devices with specific functions and autonomous motion have numerous applications in environmental remediation. However, their practical application is blocked by low productivity, a complex preparation process and high cost. Herein, we developed a facile biomass route to synthesize ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors with appealing recognition and capture capacities for Pb(II) ions. Owing to the combination of autonomous motion, the ion imprinting technique, and magnetic recovery, the ion-imprinted MnO2/CoFe2O4 Janus micromotors exhibited highly sensitive and selective adsorption and quick removal of lead ions from water. Such a Janus micromotor reveals great potential in environmental remediation.

Constructing N,S co-doped network biochar confined CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles adsorbent: Insights into the synergistic and competitive adsorption of Pb2+ and ciprofloxacin

Yang Wang,Shuang Yu,Hongwei Yuan,Lei Zhang

To solve the problem of biochar lack of adsorption sites for heavy metal ions and the difficulty of recycling, CoFe 2 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles confined in nitrogen, sulfur co-doped 3D network biochar matrix (C–CoFe 2 O 4 /N,S-BC) was designed and fabricated successfully. The obtained C–CoFe 2 O 4 /N,S-BC displays remarkable adsorption performance for both Pb 2+ and ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal at the single or binary system due to the role of N,S as metal ion anchoring compared to the N,S-free sample (CoFe 2 O 4 /BC). N,S co-doped BC not only participates in adsorption reaction but also effectively inhibites the agglomeration of CoFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles and increases the active sites as a carrier at the same time. In the single system, CoFe 2 O 4 /N,S-BC demonstrates a fast adsorption rate (equilibrium time: 30 min) and high adsorption capacity (224.77 mg g −1 for Pb 2+ , 400.11 mg g −1 for CIP) towards Pb 2+ and CIP. The adsorption process is befitted pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium data are in great pertinence with Langmuir model. In the binary system, the maximum adsorption capacity of CoFe 2 O 4 /N,S-BC for Pb 2+ and CIP is 244.80 mg g −1 (CIP: 10.00 mg L −1 ) and 418.42 mg g −1 (Pb 2+ : 10.00 mg L −1 ), respectively. The adsorption mechanism is discussed based on the experimental results. Moreover, C–CoFe 2 O 4 /N,S-BC shows good practical water treatment capacity, anti-interference ability and stable reusability (the removal efficiency>80% after eight cycles). The rapid, multifunctional, reusable, and easily separable adsorption properties make C–CoFe 2 O 4 /N,S-BC promising for efficient environmental remediation. This study also offers a viable method for the construction of adsorption material for complex wastewater treatment .

Peak-like three-dimensional CoFe2O4/carbon nanotube decorated bamboo fabrics for simultaneous solar-thermal evaporation of water and photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A

Rui-Jie Pan,Jing Wu,Jin Qu,Tingting Zhang,Fan-Zhen Jiao,Mang Zhao,Meng-Yan Han,Xiaofeng Li,Zhong-Zhen Yu

Catalytic CoFe 2 O 4 and solar-thermal carbon nanotube decorated bamboo fabrics (CCBF) are fabricated for integrating efficient solar steam generation from wastewater with catalytic degradation of its organic contaminants. Thanks to the numerous porous channels and polar groups of bamboo fabric and the efficient solar-thermal energy conversion of black carbon nanotubes, the porous and hydrophilic CCBF exhibits fast upward transport of water, efficient solar light absorption, and high solar-thermal energy conversion efficiency. The decorated CoFe 2 O 4 not only enhances the solar-thermal energy conversion efficiency of CCBF but also activates potassium peroxymonosulfate to generate abundant highly active species for catalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA). Furthermore, folding the CCBF into a peak-like 3D evaporator can enhance solar energy utilization, and gain environmental energy for promoting solar-thermal water evaporation and catalytic degradation performances. The 3D CCBF evaporator achieves a water evaporation rate of 2.72 kg m –2 h –1 under 1-sun irradiation. Meanwhile, 100% of the BPA in the seawater can be degraded within 10 min. An exceptional high purification efficiency of 27.72 kg m –2 h –1 is achieved with the 3D evaporator during a long-term treatment of BPA-containing seawater under 1-sun irradiation. This work demonstrates efficient purification of seawater/wastewater with both metal ions and organic pollutants by simultaneous solar-thermal evaporation of water and catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Cellulose derived carbon nanofiber: A promising biochar support to enhance the catalytic performance of CoFe2O4 in activating peroxymonosulfate for recycled dimethyl phthalate degradation

Lu Gan,Qiang Zhong,Aobo Geng,Linjie Wang,Chi Song,Shuguang Han,Juqing Cui,Lijie Xu

We prepared carbon nanofiber (CCNF) using cellulose as the carbon source in this study and utilized for the first time as the support to enhance the catalytic performance of the cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The catalytic capability of the CoFe 2 O 4 /CCNF nanocomposites activated PMS was investigated through degrading dimethyl phthalate (DMP), a classical organic pesticide pollutant, in water media. The influence factors like CCNF content, nanocomposite and PMS dosage, DMP content, and pH value on the degradation speed were systematically investigated and analyzed. Since CoFe 2 O 4 is a spinel structured molecule which is magnetically separable, the reusability of the prepared CoFe 2 O 4 /CCNF nanocomposites under multiple cycles was also tested. Besides, the degradation intermediates during the catalytic process were also analyzed and identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) with a possible degradation mechanism. The results indicated that the prepared nanocomposite had promising catalytic capability in degrading DMP, in which the SO 4 − radicals played the main role as the active oxidation agent. Furthermore, the CoFe 2 O 4 /CCNF nanocomposites exhibited very good stability and reusability. The present study provides a clean biochar supported catalyst which could readily enhance the PMS activation efficiency for recycled decontamination of refractory organic pollutants in water media.

Ziyang Lu,Zehui Yu,Jinbo Dong,Minshan Song,Yang Liu,Xinlin Liu,Di Fan,Zhongfei Ma,Yongsheng Yan,Pengwei Huo

A stable core–shell imprinted Ag-(poly-o-phenylenediamine)/CoFe2O4 (imprinted Ag-POPD/CoFe2O4) was synthesized via the surface imprinting technique. Ag-POPD was introduced into an imprinted layer, which significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity. Meanwhile, due to the existence of imprinted cavities in the imprinted layer, the imprinted Ag-POPD/CoFe2O4 exhibited the superior specific recognition capability for selective photodegradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). This work puts forward a novel design idea for synthesizing imprinted photocatalysts.

Highly efficient electrocatalysts with CoO/CoFe2O4 composites embedded within N-doped porous carbon materials prepared by hard-template method for oxygen reduction reaction

Xinxin Jin,Yu Jiang,Qi Hu,Shaohua Zhang,Qike Jiang,Li Chen,Ling Xu,Yan Xie,Jiahui Huang

Low-cost dual transition metal (Fe and Co) based non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) have been explored to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance in both alkaline and acidic solution. In this work, novel NNMEs derived from iron, cobalt and N-doped porous carbon materials (FeCo/NPC) were fabricated with magnesium oxide (MgO) as the hard-template. By optimizing the pyrolysis temperature (600 to 1000 °C) and the molar ratio of Fe to Co (Co, FeCo3, FeCo, Fe3Co, Fe), the highly active electrocatalyst FeCo/NPC (900) for ORR in alkaline solution was prepared, which possessed a large surface area of 958 m2 g−1. The onset potential (Eonset) and half-wave potential (E1/2) of FeCo/NPC (900) were 0.934 V and 0.865 V, respectively, comparable to the best values of NNMEs reported so far in ORR tests under alkaline conditions. Additionally, FeCo/NPC (900) exhibited better electrocatalytic properties than commercial Pt/C in terms of durability and the tolerance to methanol in alkaline media.

Shuang’an Liu,Wankun Qi,Ying Cao,Chengyang Liang,Shitong Geng,Haipeng Guo,Ying Liu,Yanhong Luo,Wenming Zhang,Ling Li

The electrical conductivity and catalytic activity of the electrode materials greatly affect the photoelectric conversion performance of DSSCs . However, the commonly used Pt electrodes no longer meet the needs of long-term development at present. Herein, based on the Kirkendall effect, CoFe 2 O 4 @C nanoparticles with core-shell structure are successfully prepared using the treatment of quasi-sol-gel method. The size of CoFe 2 O 4 @C nanoparticles is homogenized without agglomeration through adjusting the ratio of metal salt in the precursor. The composite exhibits excellent counter electrode properties in DSSCs, which attributes to the large specific surface area and superior electro-catalytic activity. With the optimized film thickness (12 µm) of CoFe 2 O 4 @C, an excellent photoelectric conversion efficiency of 7.80% is finally achieved, significantly higher than that of pure carbon (PC) electrode (6.36%) and even Pt counter electrode (7.05%) under the same conditions. The composite can additionally catalyze the recycling of I - /I 3 - redox couple steadily, providing more possibilities for the study of Pt-free materials about DSSCs counter electrode.

Synthesis of oxygen vacancy-enriched N/P co-doped CoFe2O4 for high-efficient degradation of organic pollutant: Mechanistic insight into radical and nonradical evolution

Mingzhu Hu,Jinyi Zhu,Wenjun Zhou

Oxygen vacancy-enriched N/P co-doped cobalt ferrite (NPCFO) was synthesized using ionic liquid as N and P sources, and then the catalytic performance and mechanism of NPCFO upon peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the degradation of organic pollutants were investigated. The as-synthesized NPCFO-700 exhibited excellent catalytic performance in activating PMS , and the degradation rate constant of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) increased with the increase of OV concentration in NPCFO-x. EPR analysis confirmed the existence of · OH, SO 4 ·- , and 1 O 2 in the NPCFO-700/PMS system, in which OV could induce the generation of 1 O 2 by PMS adsorption and successive capture, and also served as electronic transfer medium to accelerate the redox cycle of M 2+ /M 3+ (M denotes Co or Fe) for the generation of radical to synergistically degrade organic pollutants. In addition, the contribution of free radical and nonradical to 4-CP degradation was observed to be strongly dependent on solution pH, and SO 4 ·- was the major ROS in 4-CP degradation under acid and alkaline condition, while 1 O 2 was involved in the degradation of 4-CP under neutral condition due its selective oxidation capacity, as evidenced by the fact that such organic pollutants with ionization potential (IP) below 9.0 eV were more easily attacked by 1 O 2 . The present study provided a novel insight into the development of transition metal-based heterogeneous catalyst containing massive OV for high-efficient PMS activation and degradation of organic pollutants.

Bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon-coated CoFe2O4 core–shell composite with high catalytic performance for peroxymonosulfate activation in Rhodamine B degradation

Yu Liang,Lihua Li,Chunmeng Yang,Lu Ma,Weihui Mao,Hongmei Yu

The rational design and development of a highly efficient and sustainable heterogeneous catalyst has become a limiting factor for the practical application of persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes in organic dye degradation. Herein, a nitrogen-doped porous carbon-coated CoFe 2 O 4 core – shell composite (CoFe 2 O 4 @NPC) was synthesized by in-situ growth of cobalt/iron bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework-9 (Co/Fe-ZIF-9) on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets followed by one-step calcination of the bimetallic ZIF-GO composite in nitrogen. The textural, chemical, and magnetic properties of the composites were comprehensively characterized using various analytical techniques. The catalytic performances of the as-prepared CoFe 2 O 4 @NPC in activating PMS to decompose Rhodamine B (RhB) were then systematically evaluated. The composite calcined at 600 °C exhibited the highest catalytic activity. The maximum RhB degradation efficiency of 99.05% and pseudo-second-order kinetic constant of 0.0766 L/(mg·min) were achieved after 20 min at 25 °C. Moreover, CoFe 2 O 4 @NPC displayed excellent recyclability and stability with negligible leaching of Co and Fe ions into the solution. Subsequently, electron spin resonance , reactive oxygen species quenching, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were conducted to clarify the PMS activation mechanisms. Results suggested that SO 4 •− and •OH were generated during PMS activation and that SO 4 •− was the predominant radical involved in RhB degradation. In addition, Co(II), Fe(III), and structured nitrogen, especially pyridinic and graphitic N groups, participated in the PMS activation. Some insights into possible mechanisms of RhB degradation were also attained from spectral analyses. All these results suggested that CoFe 2 O 4 @NPC had excellent potential as a PMS activator for application in dye-contaminated wastewater treatment.
