The disposal of gold-containing wastewater not only causes a waste of resources but also triggers major health issues. Herein, Cu 2 O functionalized ZIF-8 (CZF8-MW) was successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted method to adsorb gold (Au) ions in the water environment. The performance and mechanism of Au(III) adsorbed on CZF8-MW were systematically studied. The results reveal that CZF8-MW exhibits excellent adsorption capacity and a stronger affinity for Au(III) compared with pure Cu 2 O. The boosted adsorption mechanism of Au(III) can be ascribed to the electrostatic attraction between CZF8-MW and Au(III) in acidic conditions (pH = 3.0) and the reduction of Au(III) to Au(I) and Au(0) by Cu 2 O, prompting that the adsorption capacity of CZF8-MW is 1300 mg g −1 at 318 K. Besides, CZF8-MW holds superior selectivity for Au(III) in the presence of competing ions and shows outstanding reusability after five cycles. These results indicate that CZF8-MW possesses a great potential application for the adsorption of Au(III) from wastewater.

Hierarchical structured p–n heterojunctions comprising cuprous oxide nanowire cores (Cu2O NW) and CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe LDH) nanosheet shells on copper foam (CF) substrates were constructed by in situ wet–chemical reactions with subsequent electrodeposition. The synergistic effect of the superior light-harvesting ability of Cu2O and the built-in electric field generated by the Cu2O/CoFe LDH p–n heterojunction is verified to facilitate the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons and holes by promoting the rapid transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. Benefiting from the advantages above, the optimal CF@Cu2O NW/LDH-3 exhibits light-enhanced catalysis toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (maximum enhancement of 14.4%) and oxygen evolution reaction (maximum enhancement of 7.4%) for water splitting. Moreover, the alkaline electrolytic cell based on the optimal CF@Cu2O NW/LDH-3 requires an operating potential of only 1.62 V to drive a high current density of 100 mA cm–2 under illumination. Meanwhile, a current density retention of up to 91.62% can be reserved after a stability test for 24 h. This work provides ideas for the design of transition metal-based catalytic materials for photodriven electrochemical water splitting.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) is an alternative disinfectant for drinking water . This study aimed to investigate the transformation of iopamidol (IPM) catalyzed by a main copper corrosion product ( c -Cu 2 O) with PMS as a disinfectant. The observed pseudo-first-order constant ( k obs ) for the IPM degradation in the c -Cu 2 O/PMS system (0.033 min −1 ) was 3 times that in the CuO/PMS system (0.011 min −1 ). The quenching tests and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments indicate that O 2 •− and 1 O 2 contributed to IPM degradation in the c -Cu 2 O/ PMS system. The complexation of metastable Cu(II) with a PMS molecule polarized the O O bond and then facilitated the electron transfer from the PMS molecule to other PMS and O 2 molecules, which directly and indirectly promoted the yield of O 2 •− and 1 O 2 . The iodine balance indicated that 26.0% of initial TOI was converted to IO 3 − , and CHI 3 only accounted for 0.6% of the residual TOI. In the c -Cu 2 O/PMS system, IPM conversion was started with amide C−N bond breakage, deiodination reaction and hydrogen abstraction. This study helps to better understand the conversion mechanisms of iodine-containing organic micropollutants when PMS is deployed as a disinfectant in copper pipes.

Glucose detection with small and micro volume sampling has recently received increasing attention in monitoring personal health. Herein, a cauliflower-type cluster of Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) was directly deposited on the tip surface of a stainless steel acupuncture needle electrode (ANE) by electrochemical deposition, and then this pre-formed cuprous basis was used to further prepare the neatly arranged CoCu-layered double hydroxide (CoCu-LDH) nanosheets that interconnected to form nano-sized pores in the range from 100 to 500 nm. The microstructure and spectral characteristics of the surface modification materials were comprehensively characterized by FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, FT-IR and TEM. Cu2O-based CoCu-LDH composites with special morphology had been proven to accelerate the rate of electron transport and provide more available active centers, and moreover, the mixed valence of Cu/Co induced an excellent synergism for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose. As a result, CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE as a sensitive glucose probe exhibited two wider linear ranges of 0.03–0.40 mM and 0.40–6.00 mM, with sensitivities of 116.13 μA mM−1 and 52.08 μA mM−1, respectively, and the detection limit as low as 0.46 μM (S/N = 3). The response time only took 3 s and it kept working stably in the interference of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), uric acid (UA), and Cl−. In the stability test, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor exhibited a stable monitoring sensitivity after 15 days. Finally, the CoCu-LDH/Cu2O/ANE sensor had been successfully applied to glucose analysis in human serum, proving that our design was an attractive strategy for developing a portable, minimally invasive, and low-cost non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensing platform.

Electrochemical reduction of CO 2 enables a flexible and efficient way of converting CO 2 into diverse products. Cu 2 O is regarded as a crucial species for electrocatalytically transforming CO 2 to methanol while facing challenges such as the deactivation of the catalyst and low selectivity of desired products. Therefore, the modification of Cu 2 O and the improvement of its catalytic activity needs to be addressed. Herein, we reported a novel synthesis of Cu 2 O nanocubes (Cu 2 O-cube) using the wet chemical method and demonstrated a Faradaic efficiency of 29.1 % for methanol. We found Cu 2 O (100) facet was responsible and beneficial to improve methanol production . The performance degradation at different potentials due to the deactivation of Cu 2 O-cube were revealed from the changes of surface morphologies by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrocatalytic activity of Cu 2 O-cube was further enhanced by embedding Cu 2 O-cube into ZnO nanowires (ZnO@Cu 2 O-cube) through drop-drying, leading to a Faradaic efficiency of 38.9 % towards methanol at − 0.45 V vs. RHE. For parallel comparison, an alternative binding form of ZnO and Cu 2 O was investigated through stacking Cu 2 O film onto ZnO nanowires (ZnO@Cu 2 O-film) through electrodeposition . The results elucidated that the existence of ZnO tended to suppress the production of ethanol and the binding site of ZnO-Cu 2 O could improve the selectivity of methanol.

A novel composite is constructed by loading ZIF-8 on Cu 2 O by in situ growth. By visible light driven semiconductor and π-π* conjugation effect of the metal–organic framework, the migration ability of photogenerated carriers is improved, and electrons are accumulated to participate in hydrogen ion reduction. The superior hydrogen evolution performance (981.8 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and stability test indicate that the coupling of ZIF-8 and semiconductor Cu 2 O successfully improves the catalytic capacity of the material. Cu 2 O provides a place to stimulate activity for ZIF-8 with high specific surface area. The electron transfer mechanism in composites is studied by electrochemical and spectroscopy methods. This work also provides a new opportunity for the in-situ growth of metal–organic frame materials onto single-metal oxides.

In this study, we synthesized Au-Cu 2 O core–shell nanoparticles (Au@Cu 2 O NPs) with epitaxial Cu 2 O shell, which have highly improved catalytic performances in methyl orange reduction reaction. We have obtained Au@Cu 2 O NPs with different sizes at low temperatures by changing the amount of Cu 2+ precursor. Both Au and Cu 2 O are catalytic materials, especially Cu 2 O, as a p -type semiconductor, whose catalytic ability depends on the crystalline facets. Catalytic reduction of methyl orange (MO) was used as a model system to explore the catalytic properties of Au@Cu 2 O nanocomposite. In comparison to pure Au and Cu 2 O NPs, the catalytic performance of Au@Cu 2 O has a noticeable improvement. The best catalytic rate was ~ 22 times faster than that of AuNRs and ~ 4 times than that of Cu 2 O NPs. By studying the catalytic mechanism, it is supposed that the Schottky barrier at the Au-Cu 2 O interfaces leads to the charge separation, which is beneficial to catalysis. Therefore, the Au@Cu 2 O NPs we designed with controllable shell thickness is an ideal composite material in the catalyst domain.

In this study, a Cu2O/g-C3N4 nanocomposite was prepared through in situ growth of Cu2O nanoparticles on g-C3N4 nanosheets. Subsequently, the antibacterial activities of Cu2O, g-C3N4 and Cu2O/g-C3N4 composites against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were studied, respectively. The results show that the minimum bacteriostatic concentration of the composite is significantly smaller than that of Cu2O and g-C3N4 alone, and it also has better long-term bacteriostatic effect. The bacteriostatic effect of the prepared Cu2O/g-C3N4 nanocomposites is further enhanced by visible light irradiation. The first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT) was used to obtain the work function of the composite materials. The Cu2O/g-C3N4 composite has a work function that is significantly lower than that of Cu2O and g-C3N4. The lower work function is beneficial to the separation of electrons and holes and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on the surface of the material, further reducing photocorrosion. This also explains the reason why the composite material has high bacteriostatic efficiency and better bacteriostatic effect. In addition, the calculation of the differential charge shows that the Cu atom near the heterojunction interface has a strong positive charge, which makes it more difficult to cause redox reactions and enhances the long-acting effect of the bacteriostatic agent. Therefore, based on our experimental and theoretical calculation results, the Cu2O/g-C3N4 composite has a broad application prospect in the field of photocatalytic bacteriostasis.

High photoelectrochemical water oxidation efficiency can be achieved through an efficient photogenerated holes transfer pathway. Constructing a photoanode semiconductor heterojunction with close interface contact is an effective tactic to improve the efficiency of photogenerated carrier separation. Here, we reported a novel photoanode p-n junction of Ti:Fe2O3/Cu2O (n-Ti:Fe2O3and p-Cu2O), Cu2O being obtained by in situ reduction in CuAl-LDH (layered double hydroxides). The Ti:Fe2O3/Cu2O photoanode exhibits a high photocurrent density reaching 1.35 mA/cm2at 1.23 V vs. RHE is about 1.67 and 50 times higher than the Ti:Fe2O3and α-Fe2O3photoanode, respectively. The enhanced PEC activity for the n-Ti:Fe2O3/p-Cu2O photoelectrode is due to the remarkable surface charge separation efficiency (ηsurface85%) and bulk charge separation efficiency (ηbulk72%) formed by the p-n junction and the tight interface contact formed by in situ reduction. Moreover, as a cocatalyst, CuAl-LDH can protect the Ti:Fe2O3/Cu2O photoanode and improve its stability to a certain extent. This study provides insight into the manufacturing potential of in situ reduction layered double hydroxides semiconductor for designing highly active photoanodes in the field of photoelectrochemical water oxidation.

The successful combination of chemo- and enzyme catalysis technologies in wastewater treatment has presented great potentialities as well as challenges for decades. Herein, laccase (Lac) was immobilized on the Cu 2 [email protected] by covalent linkage to obtain a stable composite (Cu 2 [email protected] ) with synergistic catalytic activity. The Cu 2 [email protected] with peroxidase-like activity was in situ synthesized by microwave-assisted assembly method. Cu 2 [email protected] exhibited high activity recovery, large immobilization capacity, remarkable tolerance to pH and high temperature conditions. Based on the prepared mimic multi-enzyme system, Cu 2 [email protected] showed broad application prospects in degradation and detection of phenolic compounds. The synergetic catalytic degradation efficiency reached 82.5% in 2h and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.29 μ M in the range of 0-200 μ M of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Further investigation found that chemo- and enzyme catalysis jointly accelerate the degradation of 2,4-DCP, and the hydroxyl radical (•OH) mediated radical pathway serve a predominant role. Therefore, the chem-enzyme integrated catalyst presented in this work provides a promising platform for organic pollutants degradation and detection by combining the enzymes and Cu 2 [email protected]

Structural coloration as a novel eco-friendly coloring method without using chemical dyes or pigments has been extensively studied for textile coloring. However, structural colors in creatures not only endow them with vivid colors, but also give them special functions. Therefore, the development of functional structural colored textiles with brilliant colors and special functions will have more practical application values. In this study, the structural colored and functional textiles were prepared by one-step spray coating cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) single crystal nanospheres on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric. Cu 2 O single crystal nanospheres with five different diameters were prepared to obtain purple, blue, green, yellow-green and orange noniridescent structural colors due to the Mie scattering of Cu 2 O nanospheres. Cu 2 O structural colored fabric showed excellent washing, rubbing and bending colorfastness due to the strong adhesion of polyacrylate (PA). Cu 2 O structural colored fabric showed excellent antibacterial properties for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antibacterial rates of Cu 2 O structural colored fabric after treatment with 60 min for E. coli and S. aureus were close to 100%. Therefore, this research provides the experimental basis for the development of functional structural colored fabrics with brilliant color and excellent antibacterial properties.

Photocatalysis is considered as a promising method to control water pollution caused by organic and biological pollutants. However, this technology faces some challenges, especially the easy recombination of photogenerated electron hole pairs. The construction of p–n heterojunction is a feasible way to expand the light absorption range and inhibit charge carrier recombination to improve the photocatalytic performance. But p–n heterojunction is at the expense of semiconductor redox ability to some extent. So it is necessary to build a new model to solve the above problems. Herein, an emerging Z-scheme photocatalyst composed of ZnO single crystal nanorods (SCNRs) assisted Cu 2 O ultrafine nanoparticles (Cu 2 O-UNPs) is successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method in conjunction with a chemical reduction. The two parts of this heterostructure are chemically bonded one another to form a tight interface. The specific surface area of Cu 2 O/ZnO is 28.6 time than that of pure ZnO. The Cu 2 O/ZnO exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and stability on simultaneous organic dye degradation due to the high redox ability. The addition of Cu 2 O can inhibit the photogenerated electron–hole pair recombination, facilitate an effective interface charge transfer, and increase the activity of photocatalysis. Under UV–visible light, this heterojunction displayed impressive ability to degrade for anionic and cationic organic dyes. ⋅OH active species play a major role in the photocatalytic process. Therefore, based on the relevant characterization results, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism based on Z-scheme heterostructure was established. Moreover, this novel Cu 2 O-UNPs/ZnO SCNRs Z-scheme heterojunction also presents an extraordinary chance for use in waste disposal and purification.
