Hollow porous CuO/C nanorods as a high-performance anode for lithium ion batteries

Yan Sun,Peigen Zhang,Bo Wang,Jing Wu,Shanshan Ning,Anjian Xie,Yuhua Shen

Cu-MOF with a hollow morphology was successfully synthesized by a novel and simple coordination transformation reaction of [Cu(NH 3 ) 4 ] 2+ with benzenetricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) under ultrasound irradiation for the first time. Then, novel hollow porous CuO/C nanorods were prepared by calcining this Cu-MOF at low temperature (250 °C) in air. The morphology and electrochemical properties of the samples were markedly affected by the calcination temperature. As anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the hollow porous nanorod structure and the presence of carbon greatly enhanced the electrochemical performance of the CuO/C nanocomposite. The reversible specific capacity of CuO/C was 505 mA h g −1 at a current density of 100 mA g −1 after 200 cycles, which is much higher than that of the CuO samples calcined at 300 °C and 350 °C (250.1 mA h g −1 and 192.3 mA h g −1 , respectively) in air. The CuO/C nanocomposite also exhibited a more favorable rate capability than CuO. The superior electrochemical performance makes this nanocomposite a promising anode material for LIBs.

Co3O4/CuO hollow nanocage hybrids with high oxidase-like activity for biosensing of dopamine

Yunxia Zhuang,Xiaodan Zhang,Qiumeng Chen,Siqi Li,Haiyan Cao,Yuming Huang

Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and oxidase-like activity of Co 3 O 4 /CuO hollow nanocage (HNC) nanocomposites. The Co 3 O 4 /CuO HNCs were successfully prepared by hydrothermal treatment of ZIF-67 in copper nitrate solution, followed by carbonization in air. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The Co 3 O 4 /CuO HNCs possess enhanced oxidase-like activity compared with pure Co 3 O 4 and CuO, and they can catalytically oxidize the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate in the absence of H 2 O 2 to produce an intense blue product. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) measurements indicate that 1 O 2 and O 2 − radicals are the major ROS in catalytic oxidation of TMB by dissolved oxygen in the TMB–Co 3 O 4 /CuO HNC system. We then developed a simple, sensitive, visual, and colorimetric biosensing method for dopamine (DA) based on its inhibiting effect on TMB oxidation. The proposed method allows for DA detection with a limit of detection of 0.027 μM and a dynamic range of 0.05–8 μM. This new colorimetric method was successfully used to detect DA in biological samples. The present work demonstrates a simple strategy to fabricate an efficient oxidase mimic with potential applications in bioanalysis and clinical diagnosis.

The effective recovery of CuO nano-particles from organic solvent by using froth flotation

Lu Jiayu,Xu Yanyan,Liu Wei,Wu Zhaoliang,Li Na,Shu Ting

The recovery of nano-catalysts from organic wastewater is still one of the most significant problems in the catalytic industry. In this work, froth flotation was used to solve this problem. CuO nano-particles were considered as the desired materials. First, four surfactants were screened for determining a suitable collector through comparing their foam properties and capture capacity to CuO nano-particles. Subsequently, froth flotation was performed by using cocamidopropyl betaine (CAB) as the collector. Under the suitable operation conditions, the enrichment ratio and recovery percentage of CuO nano-particles reached as high as 20.52 and 91.50%, respectively. Finally, the size distribution and morphology of CuO nano-particles before and after froth flotation were characterized. Experimental results indicated that the dispersibility of the recovered CuO nano-particles after froth flotation was better than that of the commercial CuO nano-particles due to the existence of surfactant molecules around the nano-particle surface. This work is expected to provide a new insight into the effective recovery of nano-catalysts from the downstream industrial effluent and to facilitate the industrialization of froth flotation in the green catalytic industry.

Construction of Fe2O3-CuO Heterojunction Photoelectrode for Enhanced Efficiency of Solar Redox Flow Batteries

Ping Lu,Zihan Zhang,Zixing Gu,Zhuo Li,Huaneng Su,Xiaozhong Shen,Qian Xu

To address the problem of suboptimal performance in deep eutectic solvents displayed by traditional TiO2photoelectrodes and Cu2O photoelectrodes that have undergone simplistic modifications that result in a mismatch with battery discharge capacity, a method combining hydrothermal and dip-coating techniques was developed to create a Fe2O3-CuO heterojunction structure on the FTO surface. Then, the impact of the heterojunction structure on the performance of solar flow batteries was investigate in this study. The experimental findings reveal that the formation of the heterojunction structure effectively mitigates the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers within the photoelectrode. Furthermore, by meticulously adjusting the CuO loading, the harmonious balance between charging and discharging currents was achieved, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the solar redox flow batteries. In comparison to standalone Fe2O3photoelectrodes, this innovative approach significantly broadens the spectrum of sunlight utilization. Notably, the fabricated Fe2O3/CuO-2 photoelectrode demonstrates a remarkable photocharging performance, far surpassing both Fe2O3photoelectrodes and commercial TiO2photoelectrodes. Specifically, the Fe2O3/CuO-2 photoelectrode boosts an average current density of 598.68 μA∙cm−2, with its charging current density being 2.74 and 5.15 larger, respectively, than that of the Fe2O3and commercial TiO2photoelectrodes.

Fabrication and theoretical explanation of the superhydrophobic CuZn coating with dandelion-like CuO microstructure

Hao Li,Sirong Yu

In this work, a Cu Zn coating with dandelion-like CuO microstructure was fabricated on pipeline steel surface by a simple two-step combined method of electrodeposition and chemical oxidation . This coating was then coated with a thin pentadecafluorooctanoic acid to achieve superhydrophobic , with the contact angle of water about 156.81° and the sliding angle around 3°. When a water droplet contacted on the Cu Zn coating surface , the dandelion-like CuO microstructure was seen as the dual-scale structure that was proposed to be composed of spherical and pillared microstructures. Based on the Wenzel's and Cassie's formulas, the theoretical explanation was used to confirm the Cassie-Cassie wetted state between water droplet and the dandelion-like hierarchical superhydrophobic coating according to the geometric parameters of the surface morphology . Meanwhile, the superhydrophobic Cu Zn coating had the ability to repel the impinging water droplets and excellent long-term, thermal, solution immersion and chemical stability. Such robust superhydrophobic Cu Zn coating with hierarchical microstructures was expected to have various potential applications in our daily life.

C2–C4 hydrocarbons synthesis from syngas over CuO–ZnO–Al2O3/SAPO-34 bifunctional catalyst

Yanping Chen,Yiming Xu,Dang-guo Cheng,Yingcai Chen,Fengqiu Chen,Xiaoyong Lu,Yiping Huang,Songbo Ni

BACKGROUND The synthesis of C 2 –C 4 hydrocarbons from coal or biomass-derived syngas has received increasing attention because of the resource constraints of petroleum. The present study explores direct production of hydrocarbons from syngas over bifunctional catalyst containing methanol synthesis catalyst CuO–ZnO–Al 2 O 3 (CZA) and SAPO-34 zeolite. RESULTS The synthesis of C 2 –C 4 hydrocarbons from syngas was investigated over CZA/SAPO-34 bifunctional catalyst at temperatures ranging from 240 to 440°C. The results indicate that higher temperatures aggregate Cu metal and lead to the deactivation of CZA. The predominant products are dimethyl ether (DME) and methanol at temperatures from 280 to 360°C and a small amount of hydrocarbons are found due to the deactivation of SAPO-34 caused by a type of coke named ‘inert coke’. While 96.5% selectivity of C 2 –C 4 hydrocarbons in products of all hydrocarbons can be obtained at 400°C with less coke named ‘active coke’. CONCLUSION Reaction temperatures have significant effect on the selectivity of C 2 –C 4 hydrocarbons and coke species of SAPO-34. The ‘active coke’ of poly methyl-substituted benzene/naphthalene (MB/MN) acts both as an intermediate and as coke deposition. The ‘inert coke’ of poly methyl-substituted adamantine (MA) and other groups-substituted benzene/naphthalene acts only as coke depositions. Comprehensive consideration of the characteristics of this bifunctional catalyst, shows that a moderate temperature for C 2 –C 4 hydrocarbons synthesis from syngas might be approximately 400°C. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry

Hierarchical CuO nanoflowers: water-required synthesis and their application in a nonenzymatic glucose biosensor

Shaodong Sun,Xiaozhe Zhang,Yuexia Sun,Shengchun Yang,Xiaoping Song,Zhimao Yang

For the first time, a facile, one-pot water/ethanol solution-phase transformation of Cu2(NO3)(OH)3 precursors into bicomponent CuO hierarchical nanoflowers is demonstrated by a sequential in situ dissolution–precipitation formation mechanism. The first stage produces a precursory crystal (monoclinic Cu2(NO3)(OH)3) that is transformed into monoclinic CuO nanoflowers during the following stage. Water is a required reactant, and the morphology-controlled growth of CuO nanostructures can be readily achieved by adjusting the volume ratio between water and ethanol. Such a bicomponent CuO hierarchical nanoflower serving as a promising electrode material for a nonenzymatic glucose biosensor shows higher sensitivity and excellent selectivity. The findings reveal that the different CuxMy(OH)z (M = acidic radical) precursors synthesized in a water/ethanol reaction environment can be utilized to obtain new forms of CuO nanomaterials, and this unique water-dependent precursor-transformation method may be used to effectively control the growth of other metal oxide nanostructures.

Enhanced stability and dissolution of CuO nanoparticles by extracellular polymeric substances in aqueous environment

Miao Lingzhan,Wang Chao,Hou Jun,Wang Peifang,Ao Yanhui,Li Yi,Lv Bowen,Yang Yangyang,You Guoxiang,Xu Yi

Abstract Stability of engineered nanoparticles in aquatic environment is an essential parameter to evaluate their fate, bioavailability, and potential toxic effects toward living organisms. As CuO NPs enter the wastewater systems, they will encounter extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from microbial community before directly interacting with bacterial cells. EPS may play an important role in affecting the stability and the toxicity of CuO NPs in aquatic environment. In this study, the influences of flocculent sludge-derived EPS, as well as model protein (BSA) and natural polysaccharides (alginate) on the dissolution kinetics and colloidal stability of CuO NPs were investigated. Results showed that the presence of NOMs strongly suppressed CuO NPs aggregation, confirmed by DLS, zeta potentials, and TEM analysis. The enhanced stability of CuO NPs in the presence of EPS and alginate were attributed to the electrostatic combined with steric repulsion, while the steric-hindrance effect may be the predominant mechanism retarding nano-CuO aggregation for BSA. Higher degrees of copper release were achieved with the increasing concentrations of NOMs. EPS are more effective than alginate and BSA in releasing copper, probably due to the abundant functional groups and the excellent metal-binding capacity. The ratio of free-Cu 2+ /total dissolved Cu significantly decreased in the presence of EPS, indicating that EPS may affect the speciation and Cu bioavailability in aqueous environment. These results may be important for assessing the fate and transport behaviors of CuO NPs in the environment as well as for setting up usage regulation and treatment strategy. Graphical Abstract

Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis of Zirconolite Using CuO and MoO3 as the Oxidants

Kuibao Zhang,Guanjun Wen,Zhiyong Jia,Yuancheng Teng,Haibin Zhang

Synroc is recognized as the second generation waste form for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW). In this research, one of the mostly studied Synroc minerals, zirconolite (CaZrTi 2 O 7 ), was prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). CuO and MoO 3 were employed as the oxidants with Ti as the reductant. Different TiO 2 /Ti ratios were selected to investigate reactivity and adiabatic temperature ( T ad ) of the designed SHS reactions. Zirconolite was successfully synthesized as the main phase at varied TiO 2 /Ti ratios using CuO and MoO 3 as the oxidants. The as-synthesized samples were readily solidified with desirable density and Vickers hardness.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular toward tetracycline degradation

Ziru Shao,Shuangfei Zhang,Yonghong Shi,Deyong Wu

For reducing the amount and fully utilizing active sites of CuO, microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular assembly (CuO/MCSA) was developed in situ and empolyed as efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for water decontamination. The characteristics of CuO/MCSA were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET. CuO/MCSA showed strong catalytic ability to activate PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the condition of pH≈7 and PMS dosage of 0.5 mmol /L, 1 g/L CuO/MCSA including less than 3.0 wt% CuO can remove about 70% of 20 mg/L TC within 5 min. And after five consecutive cycles, the degradation rate of CuO/MCSA was still around 52.6%. PMS dosage, reaction temperature and initial pH value, co-existing anions and small molecule acids all affected the performance of CuO/MCSA/PMS system on TC degradation. According to the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, 1O2 played the most important role in TC degradation in CuO/MCSA/PMS system. In addition, CuO/CSA/PMS system exhibited wide applicability, which can effectively remove TC in different water bodies (deionized water, tap water and lake water) and various pollutants (TC, methylene orange and methyl blue). Overall, this work provided an effective strategy to enhance the efficient utilization of catalyst for PMS activation.

CuO doping SiO2 for enhancing electron transfer to product C2H4 in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction

Xu Ji,Weicong Xu,Chao Liu,Xing Wang

The electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR) offers a promising pathway for carbon cycling and high-value fuel synthesis. However, the efficient production of ethylene (C₂H₄), a critical multicarbon product, remains constrained by insufficient catalyst activity and selectivity. Although copper-based materials enable C–C coupling, conventional CuO catalysts suffer from imbalanced *CO intermediate adsorption strength and sluggish charge transfer kinetics‌.In this study, a silica (SiO₂) doping strategy was employed to synergistically modulate the electronic structure and surface active site distribution of CuO, significantly enhancing CO₂-to-C₂H₄ conversion efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that SiO₂ incorporation induces local electronic density rearrangement around Cu²⁺, stabilizing *CO adsorption, while the constructed Cu-O-Si interfaces accelerate charge transfer, enhances electron transfer and reduce the energy barrier for *COCHO formation. The optimized SiO₂-10%/CuO catalyst achieves a C₂H₄ Faraday efficiency of 42% and a partial current density of 6.3 mA/cm² at −1.4 V (vs. RHE), representing a threefold improvement over pristine CuO. Notably, the catalyst exhibits exceptional stability over 4 hours‌.Structural characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that SiO₂ doping promotes the self-assembly of CuO nanosheets into flower-like architectures with a high specific surface area and exposes synergistic (111)/(002) facets, which collectively enhance *CO intermediate enrichment and directional coupling‌. This work provides novel insights into designing high-performance CO₂RR catalysts through multidimensional modulation strategies.

Facile microwave-assisted synthesis of Sb2O3-CuO nanocomposites for catalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol

Jiao Yang Lu,Zhen Qi Bu,Yu Qing Lei,Donghua Wang,Binsheng He,Jing Wang,Wei Tao Huang

Recently, bimetallic nanocomposites have been prepared and used in the fields of sensing, catalysis, energy and medicine. However, there are few reports on the preparation and application of new antimony-metal nanocomposites based on two-dimensional antimonene (AM). Herein, Sb 2 O 3 -CuO nanocomposites were facilely synthesized by using microwave-assisted heating the mixture solution of AM and Cu 2+ ions and utilized for catalytic degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP). Interestingly, in the mixed solution of AM and various metal ions (Cu 2+ , Co 2+ , Mn 2+ ), only the mixture of AM and Cu 2+ ions showed efficient fading and absorption reduction effects on PNP after being heated. A series of characterization on morphology and elemental composition confirmed that the nanocomposites obtained after microwave heating was composed of Sb, Cu, O elements (namely Sb 2 O 3 -CuO), and was a layered structure loaded with numerous irregular particles. Compared with other catalysts, the nanocomposite has higher catalytic efficiency (the rate constant of 1.07 s −1 ), and was capable of degrading 96 % of PNP with only 3 s reaction. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis demonstrated that the copper-mediated Fenton-like reaction in the nanocomposites induced hydroxyl radicals which can efficiently attack and degrade PNP. This study presents a novel approach to the synthesis of antimony-metal nanocomposites and provides a potential solution for the treatment of organic pollutants.
