Foodborne residue of carbendazim (CBZ) poses a major threat to human health. Here, we rationally designed a smartphone-assisted fluorescent sensor based on bimetallic-organic framework (Eu/Tb-MOF) for ultrasensitive and visual monitoring of CBZ. The Eu/Tb-MOF nanorods fabricated using Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ as metal nodes and homobenzoic tricarboxylic acid (H 3 BTC) as organic ligand exhibit superior optical properties. After adding CBZ, the strong orange fluorescence of Eu/Tb-MOF nanorods was suppressed by the inner filter effect (IFE). The linear ranges of the fluorescent sensor were 0.01–15 and 15–80 µg/mL, with a detection limit as low as 7.09 ng/mL. The analyses of CBZ residue in tomato and orange samples showed satisfactory recoveries of 99.32 %–101.97 % and low relative standard deviations of 0.87 %–3.44 %., verifying the practicality of the probe for CBZ. Notably, a simple and portable smartphone-assisted sensing platform based on the Eu/Tb-MOF nanorods was successfully constructed for quick, visual, and real-time monitoring of CBZ residue. This work provides an efficient onsite analytical method for assessment and warning-early of CBZ to safeguard food quality

Nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses were prepared using a sol–gel method. These sintered nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses have a transmittance greater than 85 % and possess high mechanical strength, enabling them to contain and protect RE ions. Owing to the presence of nanopores in nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses, Eu ions can easily enter the nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses via an ex-situ dipping method. After drying at room temperature (RT) and then heating at 400 °C, 600 °C, 800 °C, and 1200 °C, we obtained a series of Eu doped nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses. The thermal reduction process from Eu 3+ ions to Eu 2+ ions can occur at a lower sintering temperature (400 °C), enabling a detailed analysis of the thermal reduction mechanism at both low and high temperatures in detail. Under the conditions where Al 3+ ions are present in the samples that are under calcination, Eu 2+ -doped nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses are more easily obtained at relatively low temperatures. Owing to the adjustable composition of Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ in the nanoporous Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses, tunable emission from red-orange light to blue-violet light can be achieved in the samples. This new type of transparent Eu-doped NPGs has the advantages of high mechanical strength and good processability and is non-toxic and harmless, thereby showing great potential for use in tunable light sources and LED devices.

The advancement of Eu 2+ -activated luminescent materials tailored to exhibit a range of properties is crucial for addressing the specific demands of various application fields. However, the lack of suitable lattice sites in numerous compounds for stable Eu 2+ incorporation restricts their potential for diverse optical properties. Herein, a facile strategy of carbon and hydrogen coreduction utilizing graphite crucibles is proposed to effectively achieve the impressive luminescence of Eu 2+ at trivalent Y sites in Rb 3 Y(PO 4 ) 2 :Eu phosphors. Rb 3 Y(PO 4 ) 2 :Eu exhibits blue-violet emission when Eu 2+ predominantly occupies the Rb1 and Rb2 sites. Inspiringly, by facilitating the reduction of more Eu 3+ to Eu 2+ , a yellow emission band at 550 nm arising from Eu 2+ at Y sites emerges, enabling the realization of single-component white-emitting and yellow-emitting Rb 3 Y(PO 4 ) 2 :Eu phosphors. The diverse luminescent properties of Rb 3 Y(PO 4 ) 2 :Eu expand its potential applications in different white light source devices and optical thermometry. This work presents an innovative synthetic strategy to develop remarkable Eu 2+ luminescence at trivalent cation sites, thereby broadening the optical properties of the material and enabling multifunctional applications.

A stable dual-emission fluorescent system, R6G/Eu-MOF, was obtained by simple mixing Eu-MOF with fluorescent rhodamine 6G (R6G). This system not only achieved robust dual luminescence performance at 430 nm (Eu-MOF) and 555 nm (R6G) under single-wavelength excitation, but also endowed it significantly improved fluorescence stability. Orientin (OT), a bioactive traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) component, was found to efficiently quench the dual fluorescent emissions via the synergistic effect of dynamic quenching effect, photo-induced electron transfer and molecular interactions. Therefore, a rapid fluorescent assay for OT was developed based on the variations in fluorescence signals at 430 nm and 555 nm, as well as the alterations in the ratio between these two signals. This method can achieve highly sensitive determination of OT in the linear range of 1.1-220 µM, with a LOD of 0.26 µM at 430 nm and 0.16 µM at 555 nm (3σ/N). The R6G/Eu-MOF hybrid exhibits significantly lower detection limits and a broader linear range OT than either R6G or Eu-MOF alone. This work presents a simple strategy to improve the water stability of Eu-MOF, and also provides a rapid analysis of small molecule drug using a fluorescence approach based on dual-emission MOF hybrid system.

Borate-based phosphors, as a critical class of luminescent materials, have garnered significant attention due to their stable crystal structures, wide bandgaps, excellent thermal stability, and robust spectral tunability, making them essential components in white light-emitting diodes ( w LEDs) technologies. In this work, a high-symmetry Ba 3 Y 2 B 6 O 15 (BYB) phosphor co-doped with Bi 3+ , Tb 3+ , Eu 3+ , and Lu 3+ was synthesized via a multi-step sol-gel method. Different photoluminescence (PL) behaviors of Bi 3+ , Tb 3+ and Eu 3+ in BYB were systematically revealed. By modulating the PL spectrum via energy transfer (ET) from Bi → Tb → Eu, ‘cool’ white-light emission was achieved. A strategy of replacing Y 3+ with Lu 3+ was adopted to adjust the crystal field splitting and symmetry. This modification broadens the blue light coverage range in Bi 3+ PL, increases the hypersensitive transition of Eu 3+ ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 ), increase the intensity of red emission. They achieved their optimal balance ultimately. The improved structural compactness and rigidity reduced electron-phonon coupling effects, endowing the phosphor with superior chemical/thermal stability. Finally, a high-performance phosphor-converted w LED (pc- w LED) device with chromaticity coordinates of (0.361, 0.358), a luminous efficacy (LE) of 95.2 lm/W, was fabricated by integrating the optimized BYB: Bi/Tb/Eu/Lu phosphor with a UV LED chip using remote ‘cap’ packaging, demonstrating exceptional performance.

Background due to the toxicity and widespread distribution of inorganic mercury ions (Hg 2+ ), it is a crucial task for researchers to develop simple methods for field analysis of water samples for trace Hg 2+ . Result a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent dual-mode assay based on bifunctional UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu and gold nanocomplexes (AuNPs@UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu) was constructed for the sensitive, selective and potentially on-site determination of Hg 2+ . The incorporation of Hg 2+ resulted in the formation of gold amalgam, which enhanced peroxidase-like activity of AuNPs@UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu, accelerating the oxidization of zymolyte 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Concurrently, the color of the reaction solution turned blue, and the RGB (red, green, and blue) of the solution color changed accordingly. The fluorescence at 618 nm was almost unchanged with the increase of Hg 2+ concentration, whereas the fluorescence at 460 nm was obviously quenched due to the inner filter effect (IFE). Under UV irradiation, the fluorescence emission of the sensing system changed from blue to red, enabling easy visual detection. The probe showed great linearity over a wide range of 20–1200 nM (colorimetric) and 50–4000 nM (fluorescent), with limits of detection (LODs) of 8 nM and 3 nM, respectively. Significance the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of trace Hg 2+ in tap water and groundwater, while the use of a smartphone enables its simplicity and portability. The results show that the colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent dual-mode method based on AuNPs@UiO–(COOH) 2 –NH 2 /Eu can achieve rapid visual determination of Hg 2+ potentially useful for on-site analysis.

Reasonable modulation of temperature-dependent luminescence color has attracted significant attention due to its promising applications in anti-counterfeiting and temperature sensing. Although research on thermochromic materials is growing, the detailed exploration of the causes remain insufficiently explored. In this study, we successfully synthesized SrMoO 4 :Tb/Eu samples exhibiting thermal-responsive color tuning. Under 280 nm excitation, the intensity ratio of Eu 3+ ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 ) to Tb 3+ ( 5 D 4 → 7 F 5 ) in SrMoO 4 :0.08Tb/0.12Eu gradually increases from 0.81 to 5.8 over the temperature range of 303K–573K, accompanied by a distinct color shift from red to yellow. Experimental investigations demonstrated that the thermochromic behavior of the sample is primarily governed by nonradiative relaxation rates and local site symmetry. These results indicated that the samples can have potential for anti-counterfeiting and temperature sensing, particularly suitable as temperature sensing in the high-temperature reactor observation window.

Industrial emissions of heavy metal ions and oxygen-containing anions, antibiotic residues caused by pharmaceutical and agricultural activities, and toxic ions such as Fe 3+ introduced by nuclear industry leaks, collectively form a complex water pollution. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a novel europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) through a hydrothermal approach employing a flexible V-shaped dicarboxylic acid ligand. The single crystal X-ray diffraction results indicate that the Eu-MOF belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system. Its basic structural unit is a one-dimensional coordination chain, which is further assembled by hydrogen bonding and π - π stacking between molecules, ultimately forming a stable three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Leveraging the intense red emission of Eu 3+ and its robust structural integrity, the Eu-MOF demonstrates remarkable sensitivity and specificity in the fluorescence detection of Fe 3+ , MnO 4 − , and nitrofurantoin (NFT) in aqueous solutions, featuring low detection limits and substantial quenching constants. Mechanism studies have shown that the structure of the material remains stable during the sensing process, and fluorescence quenching is mainly caused by the combined effects of static quenching, competitive absorption, and photo-induced electron transfer. This research introduces a dependable multifunctional luminescent platform for the swift and precise monitoring of various hazardous environmental contaminants.

Lanthanide metal–organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) show promise for ratiometric biosensors owing to their tunable photoluminescence and rich energy transfer processes among Ln 3+ , organic ligand and photosensitizer, yet face challenges in environmental stability and susceptibility of energy transfer to external stimuli. Herein, a ligand-locked post-synthetic metalation (PSMet) strategy, namely grafting Cu(acac) − units to the free bipyridine sites of 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate (bpydc 2− ) linkers in Eubpydc, was applied to develop a water-stable and dual-emissive Eu-MOF sensor, Cu@Eubpydc. Due to the conformation locking of bipyridine moiety via chelating to Cu(acac) − , the MOF network rigidity is reinforced and water stability is improved. Meanwhile, this modification impedes the energy transfer from the organic linkers to Eu 3+ , boosting ligand-based fluorescent emission, which is more sensitive to external factors than Eu 3+ emission. The post-synthetic Cu@Eubpydc as a ratiometric fluorescence (RF) sensor exhibited a sensitive response to a narrow pH change between 3.1 and 4.0, as well as low detection limits of 80 nM, 107 nM, and 64 nM for common neurotransmitters aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and glutathione, respectively. The pH response mechanism involves the binding of H + to the N-donor of the unmetallized bpydc 2− ligand through hydrogen bonding. In contrast, neurotransmitters sensing relies on hydrogen bonding interaction, absorbance-caused enhancement, as well as acidity enhancement aroused by redox reaction. Additionally, Cu@Eubpydc was finally applied to neurotransmitters determination in serum samples, and its satisfactory recovery rate confirm its practical utility. This work uncovered that the ligand-locked PSMet strategy opens a new avenue for constructing Ln-MOFs with excellent water stability and RF sensing capabilities.

1-Hydroxypyrene (1-HP) is the final metabolite of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the human body, and Fe 3+ is an important trace element for human growth and metabolism. When 1-HP or Fe 3+ is detected in human urine, it indicates that there is a problem with the human health condition. The detection of 1-HP and Fe 3+ in urine can reflect the health status of the human body. In this work, Eu(III) complexes coated silane coupling agent (WD-53) modified spherical SiO 2 core-shell composite material (SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu) was prepared and used as the fluorescent probe for detecting 1-HP and Fe 3+ . The fluorescence intensity of SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu with the same mass concentration is 1.37 times that of L-Eu, while the content of Eu 3+ in SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu is only about one-third of L-Eu. Moreover, the dispersion stability of SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu in solvents is much higher than that of L-Eu. Furthermore, SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu exhibits the sensitive response to 1-HP and Fe 3+ without interference from inorganic salts, urea, glucose and other components. The fluorescence quenching constants for detecting 1-HP and Fe 3+ are 9.62 × 10 5 M − 1 and 5.29 × 10 3 M − 1 , respectively, and the limits of detection are 5.93 × 10 − 6 M and 1.08 × 10 − 3 M, respectively. We further employed the SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu composite material within a Tris-HCl buffer to detect 1-HP and Fe 3+ , respectively, and obtained Stern-Volmer quenching constants (K sv ) of 3.662 × 10 5 M − 1 and 1.957 × 10 3 M − 1 . Compared to L-Eu, composite material SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu has higher fluorescence efficiency, better dispersion stability and chemical stability. Therefore, SiO 2 -WD-53@L-Eu is considered a promising material for detecting 1-HP and Fe 3+ in urine.

Core-shell precursor boosts Eu 2+ dispersion and NIR emission in BaS host. • Wet-chemistry-assisted synthesis suppresses S-related defects, enabling NIR emission. • S-related defects act as both luminescent and quenching centers in BaS:Eu. This study develops an innovative wet-chemistry-assisted method for synthesizing BaS:Eu near-infrared (NIR) phosphors. By sequentially precipitating Eu 3+ and Ba 2+ in alkaline solution, a core-shell BaSO 4 @Eu(OH) 3 precursor is obtained, in which the subsequently formed BaSO 4 is inferred to encapsulate the preformed Eu(OH) 3 nuclei. SEM/EDS and XPS analysis show no detectable Eu on the particle surface, supporting this core–shell-like configuration. After sintering in CO reducing atmosphere at 1300 °C, BaS:Eu 2+ is obtained. Under 450 nm excitation, the material exhibits strong NIR broadband emission centered at 715 nm, attributed to the 4 f 6 5d 1 →4 f 7 transition of Eu 2+ in the octahedral crystal field of BaS. Compared with conventional solid-state routes using Eu 2 O 3 or Eu 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , this wet-chemistry-assisted approach appears to improve doping homogeneity in the product system and reduce Eu 2+ aggregation on the particle surface, as reflected in enhanced absorption characteristics and NIR emission intensity. The core-shell precursor configuration is suggested to suppress sulfur-related defect emission by limiting Eu exposure at the particle surface and by controlling the Ba-to-S ratio. Analysis of the luminescence behaviors indicates that sulfur-related defects act as both emission and quenching centers. Overall, this work offers a precursor-engineering strategy that may be extended to develop high-performance NIR-emitting materials. The fluorescent probes were immobilized on paper substrates to construct a paper-based sensor, which was combined with a smartphone-assisted machine learning algorithm to enable high-throughput, intelligent, and rapid detection of SAs. After optimizing the constructed prediction model, the coefficient of determination can reach 0.99, indicating the accuracy and applicability of the model. Overall, this sensor exhibits excellent stability, sensitivity, and specificity, providing a practical approach for the intelligent, rapid, and high-throughput on-site visual detection of SAs.
