Developing carbon-based hybrid catalysts with high reactivity, good stability, and low cost is critical for environmental remediation via heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). In this work, CoFe alloy particles encapsulated in nitrogen doped graphitic carbon (donated as CoFe@N-GC), in situ converted from cobalt modified Prussian blue (PB) precursor through a two-step carbonization route, is rationally designed and synthesized as an advanced catalyst for the degradation of antibiotics norfloxacin (NOF) by coupling with peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The resultant hybrid catalyst can not only offer a conductive network that promotes the electron transfer but also protect the metal species from being leached out. By serving as a catalyst/activator, it shows an outperforming performance in catalytic degradation of organic pollutants than other catalysts (i.e. CuO, CoFe 2 O 4 , and biochar). The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results clearly reveal that the sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) are the dominant reactive oxidative species (ROS). After four successive cycles, CoFe@N-GC still performs excellent catalytic activity, leading to a NOF degradation of 94.4% within 20 min ([NOF] = 15 µM, [PMS] = 0.2 mM, [Catalyst] = 0.05 g L −1 , pH = 6.0). This study highlights the in situ synthesis of CoFe@N-GC with outstanding activities for catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

The seeds of tree peony ( Paeonia ostii ) are promulgated as emerging edible oil crops. However, biological properties of principal constituents of peony seeds were not well studied. Fifteen main constituents including suffruticosols A and B, trans -ε-viniferin, ampelopsin E, resveratrol, trans -resveratrol-4′- O -β- d -glucopyranoside, paeoniflorin, luteolin, luteolin-4′- O -β- d -glucopyranoside, apigenin, kaempferol, oleanic acid, betulinic acid, hederagenin, and caffeic acid were isolated and identified. Their cytotoxicity against human tumor cell lines (COLO205, HT-29, HepG2, AGS, and HL-60) were evaluated. Among them, trans -ε-viniferin showed the most potent cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells (IC 50 5.6 μM); ampelopsin E exhibited the most obvious antiproliferative properties on COLO205 (IC 50 78.1 μM) and HT-29 (IC 50 4.2 μM) cells, and betulinic acid showed the strongest growth inhibitory effects on HepG2 (IC 50 6.6 μM) and AGS (IC 50 5.4 μM) cells. Three enzymes (tyronsinase, α-glucosidase, and acetylcholinesterase) inhibitory activities of 12 compounds were also screened. Stilbene compounds, especially suffruticosols A and B, showed a significant inhibitory activity on all three enzymes. Practical applications The cytotoxicity of 15 main constituents from peony seeds against COLO205, HT-29, HepG2, AGS, and HL-60 cells were evaluated. Among them, trans -ε-viniferin showed the most potent cytotoxicity against HL-60 cells (IC50 5.6 μM); ampelopsin E exhibited the most obvious antiproliferative properties on COLO205 (IC50 78.1 μM) and HT-29 (IC50 4.2 μM) cells, and betulinic acid showed the strongest growth inhibitory effects on HepG2 (IC50 6.6 μM) and AGS (IC50 5.4 μM) cells. Collectively, these results suggested that Paeonia ostii seed (POS) extracts are potential candidates for anticancer agents.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history and particular advantages in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic foot gangrene (DFG). Patients with DFG are mainly divided into two subtypes, tendon lesion with edema (GT) and ischemic lesion without edema (GI), which are suitable for different medical strategies. Metabolomics has special significance in unravelling the complexities of multifactorial and multisystemic disorders. This study acquired the serum metabolomic profiles of two traditional Chinese medicine subtypes of DFG to explore potential molecular evidence for subtype characterization, which may contribute to the personalized treatment of DFG. A total of 70 participants were recruited, including 20 with DM and 50 with DFG (20 with GI and 30 with GT). Conventional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) followed by orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were used as untargeted metabolomics approaches to explore the serum metabolomic profiles. Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) and MetaboAnalyst were used to identify the related metabolic pathways. Compared with DM patients, the levels of 14 metabolites were altered in the DFG group, which were also belonged to the differential metabolites of GI (13) and GT (7) subtypes, respectively. Among these, urea, α-D-mannose, cadaverine, glutamine, L-asparagine, D-gluconic acid, and indole could be regarded as specific potential metabolic markers for GI, as well as L-leucine for GT. In the GI subtype, D-gluconic acid and L-asparagine are positively correlated with activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and fibrinogen (FIB). In the GT subtype, L-leucine is positively correlated with the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP). Arginine and proline metabolism, glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis are the most important metabolic pathways associated with GI. The main metabolic pathways related to GT include pyrimidine metabolism, glutathione metabolism, biosynthesis of valine, leucine, and isoleucine, as well as valine, serine, and isoleucine with metabolites. The results of this study indicate that patients with different DFG subtypes have distinct metabolic profiles, which reflect the pathological characteristics of each subtype respectively. These findings will help us explore therapeutic targets for DFG and develop precise treatment strategies.

Abstract Pesticides are often involved in numerous acute and fatal poisonings. Patients’ blood samples may be sent to a toxicological laboratory for a poisoning diagnosis. This study proposes a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) method for the determination of seven pesticides (malathion, methyl isofenphos, dichlorvos, chlorpyrifos, phenthoste, p , p ′-DDD, p , p ′-DDE) in human blood based on a quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) sample preparation method with Fe 3 O 4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as the new adsorbing material. It proved that Fe 3 O 4 MNPs have excellent adsorbent function while purifying the complex blood sample and it is simple to be separated from the extract. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limits of the proposed method for seven pesticides ranged from 0.011 to 0.163 µg mL −1 . Good linearity ( R value ≥0.9949) was achieved at concentration levels of 0.3–4.0 µg mL −1 , and acceptable method recoveries were found in the range of 70.0–111.8% at different concentrations, with the relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 10.5%. In short, the QuEChERS method with Fe 3 O 4 MNPs used for removing impurities improved the speed of sample pre-treatment and exhibited an enhanced performance in purifying. It can be applied for both forensic and clinical cases of accidental or suicidal poisoning with these pesticides. Graphical abstract

HighlightsWhat are the main findings? The color, energy, and texture properties of loquat jam changed with the prolongation of cooking time. The changes in the content of free amino acids, organic acids and volatile flavor substances with the cooking time caused variation in the olfactory and gustatory senses of loquat jam. There was a significant difference in the E-nose and E-tongue results of loquat jam cooked for 100 min and 120 min. What is the implication of the main finding?Heating and the resulting intramolecular interactions caused changes in the physicochemical parameters of loquat jam.Free amino acids, organic acids, and volatile substances contributed significantly to the flavor composition of loquat jam. When the cooking time reached 120 min, the olfactory and gustatory senses of loquat jam underwent significant changes.AbstractThe study compared and analyzed the quality of loquat jam with different cooking times through physicochemical parameters, headspace-gas chromatography-ion migration spectroscopy (HS-GC-IMS) and intelligent senses. The results showed that with the prolongation of the cooking time, the color of loquat jam slowly deepened, the energy significantly increased, the adhesiveness, gumminess, hardness and chewiness enhanced, the free amino acid content increased from 22.40 to 65.18 mg/g. The organic acid content increased from 1.64 to 9.82 mg/g. Forty-seven volatile flavor compounds were identified in five types of loquat jam using HS-GC-IMS, among which the relative content of aldehydes was sharply higher than that of other chemical substances, playing an important role in the flavor formation of loquat jam. LJ0, LJ1 and LJ2 had higher aldehyde content, followed by LJ3 and LJ4 had the lowest aldehyde content. The orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) screened 15 marker compounds that could distinguish five types of loquat jam. The E-nose results showed a significant difference in olfactory sense between loquat jam cooked for 100 and 120 min. The E-tongue results corroborated the results of free amino acids (FAAs) and organic acids, indicating that the gustatory sense of loquat jam changed significantly when the cooking time reached 120 min. The results provided a basis for further research on the relationship between the cooking process and quality characteristics of loquat jam. Keywords:loquat jam;cooking time;physicochemical parameters;GC-IMS;intelligent senses

Background: Rapeseed oil is the most widely consumed vegetable oil globally. However, the key aroma-active compounds of rapeseed oil and their changes during storage are unclear. In this study, the flavor of rapeseed oil during storage was characterized by physicochemical analysis, sensory evaluation, electronic nose (E-nose), and gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC–O). Results: Peroxide value, acid value, and anisidine value gradually increased, while polyphenol content, tocopherol content, and sterol content showed a downward trend during storage. The E-nose combined with the linear discriminate analysis (LDA) method could discriminate rapeseed oil with different storage times. The sensory attributes changed significantly from distinctive pickled aroma to rancid, green, and fried aromas during storage. This work provides the aroma-active markers based on GC–O–MS for the quality evaluation of rapeseed oil during storage. A total of 136 volatile compounds were detected by GC–MS, and 16 odorants were identified by GC–O combined with aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). Finally, seven aroma-active volatile compounds (3-butenyl isothiocyanate, 2(5H)-furanone, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, ( E )-2-octenal, ( E,E )-2,4-heptadienal, ( E,E )-2,4-decadienal, and 3-methyl-pentanoic acid) with the odor activity values (OAVs) greater than 1 were identified as potential key aroma volatiles that contributed significantly to the overall aroma of rapeseed oil. Conclusion: This study provided a comprehensive method to monitor the flavor quality change of rapeseed oil during storage. The identified volatile compounds could be the markers to characterize the quality changes of rapeseed oil during storage.

Beiwudu Hulatang, a traditional Chinese culinary delicacy, is valued for its complex flavor profile; however, its characteristic aroma compounds and the determinants of sensory quality remain insufficiently studied. This study evaluated the flavor characteristics of four commercial samples and one laboratory-made sample of Beiwudu Hulatang using gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), electronic nose (E-nose), electronic tongue (E-tongue), and sensory evaluation. The results of E-tongue analysis indicated that bitterness and saltiness were the dominant taste attributes. E-nose analysis demonstrated strong responses to sulfur-containing compounds, alcohols, and alkanes, indicating their significant contribution to the overall aroma. A total of 60 volatile compounds were identified by GC-IMS, with ethers, alcohols, and terpenes being the most abundant chemical groups. Among these, 13 key aroma compounds were screened as discriminative markers (OAV > 1, VIP > 1) by integrating the odor activity value (OAV) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). The Pearson correlation analysis further revealed that sensory attributes, particularly aroma and overall acceptability, were positively correlated with propanal, heptaldehyde, and 1,8-cineol, and negatively correlated with linalool and limonene. Overall, this study provides a systematic characterization of the flavor profile of Beiwudu Hulatang and establishes a scientific basis for its quality standardization and flavor-oriented product development.

Speciation analysis of mercury in hair facilitates accurate evaluation of mercury exposure to humans and insights into the intertransformation of different mercury species in the human body. However, conventional hyphenated techniques used for mercury speciation analysis usually require expensive instruments and a complex interface. In this work, a compact and miniaturized point discharge (PD) atomic emission spectrometer was utilized as a detector of gas chromatography for the speciation analysis of mercury. Mercury species extracted from hair were derivatized to their volatile species with NaBEt4 and subsequently preconcentrated by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) prior to their speciation analysis. Under the optimized conditions, limits of detection of 0.35 μg kg–1 (0.035 ng) and 1.0 μg kg–1 (0.10 ng) were obtained for IHg and MeHg, respectively, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of better than 3.5%. Because of the compact and miniature conformation, high excitation capability, low power consumption of PD-OES, and efficient preconcentration of mercury species by HS-SPME, the proposed system not only overcomes the shortcomings associated with the conventional hyphenated techniques but also provides several unique advantages, including significant simplification of experimental setup, reduction of dead volume, and improvement of sensitivity. The accuracy of this system was validated by speciation analysis of mercury in a Certified Reference Material (GBW09101b, human hair) and 10 human hair samples collected from different people in the population.

Azadirachtin exhibits excellent bioactivities against several hundred arthropods. However, current knowlege of its biochemical effect on B . dorsalis larvae is not deep enough. In this study, integrated LC-MS and GC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics were used to analyze the changes of endogenous metabolites and the biochemical effects of azadirachtin on B . dorsalis larvae. Azadirachtin has excellent bioactivities against B . dorsalis larvae in this study, leading to a longer developmental duration, lower survival rate, and low pupa weight. The effect of azadirachtin was investigated on a total of 22 and 13 differentially abundant metabolites in the LC–MS and GC–MS-based metabolomics results, are selected respectively. Pathway analysis indicated that 14 differentially enriched metabolic pathways, including seven influential pathways, are worthy of attention. Further integrated key metabolic pathway analysis showed that histidine metabolism, d -glutamine and d -glutamate metabolism, biotin metabolism, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, pentose and glucuronate interconversions, and alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism in B . dorsalis larvae are significantly relevant pathways affected by azadirachtin. Although extrapolating the bioactivity results in this study to the practical project of B . dorsalis pest management in the field has limitations, it was found that azadirachtin has a significant effect on the primary metabolism of B . dorsalis larvae.

A detection method for 3 kinds of phenolic compounds of endocrine disruptors (4-nonylphenol, 4-octylphenol, and bisphenol A) in infant milk powders by solid-phase extraction combined GC-MS was established. This method can effectively remove interference materials from infant milk powder products. The limit of detection and the limit of quantitation of the 3 kinds of compounds were 0.8 μg/kg and 2.5 μg/kg, respectively, with the relative standard deviations of 4.3–12.1%. The recovery rates of 4-nonylphenol, 4-octylphenol, and bisphenol A were of 68.5–89.2%, 64.8–87.0%, and 97.8–110.0%, respectively. Concentrations of the bisphenol A were from 0.8 to 14 μg/kg in 35 samples of the total 60 samples. And the other two compounds of 4-nonylphenol and 4-octylphenol were not found in all the 60 samples tested. The established method is simple, rapid, accurate, and highly sensitive, and the pollution of endocrine disruptors in some infant milk powders products was detectable in trace amounts.

Catimor coffee, an economically significant cultivar known for its disease resistance and high yield potential. By integrating headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-TOF-MS) with relative odour activity value (ROAV) analysis, we systematically characterised the aroma compounds from four Yunnan and two Laotian production regions. A total of 183 dry aroma and 172 wet aroma compounds were identified, with ROAV analysis revealing significant geographical variations in both aroma profiles. Key odorants responsible for regional differentiation were identified and quantified. In dry aroma, ethyl isovalerate was established as the characteristic marker for fruity aroma in BS-1 samples, while LC-2 samples displayed a predominantly acidic profile. Wet aroma analysis showed PE-3 samples with strong floral, nutty and roasted characteristics, contrasted by Laos-6 samples exhibiting pronounced fruity, acidic and roasted notes. Critical odour-active compounds including furfuryl acetate (fruity), acetic acid (sour), along with 2-acetylpyrrole, difurfuryl ether and furfuryl alcohol (roasted) were quantitatively confirmed as major contributors to specific flavour attributes. The research establishes a comprehensive volatile compound database for Catimor coffee and elucidates the chemical foundation of regional aroma differences, providing scientific support for geographical origin authentication and quality enhancement in coffee production.

A method for determination of chlorophenols (CPs) in sediments was developed using ultrasonic solvent extraction followed by solid-phase extraction, derivatization, and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Some effective operational details and parameters on mixing of samples and extraction solvent, adsorption loss, and extraction cycles of the derivatives were studied and optimized. The calibration curves of standard solutions were observed in the range of 0.5–100 μg L −1 and correlation coefficients ranged from 0.998 to 0.999. The limits of detection (LOD s ) for individual CPs are in the range of 0.026–0.072 ng g −1 . The method showed good performance with the recovery efficiencies of target CPs in spiked sediment at 73.2–105.6%. In addition, the feasibility of applying the proposed method to determine the concentration of CPs in field core sediment samples collected in three shallow lakes in Eastern China was examined. The obtained results show that the present method is a sensitive, simple, low cost and highly feasible method for determination of CPs in sediment samples.
