To mitigate biofouling and maintain the properties of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) in electrodialysis (ED) processes, conferring specialized functional coatings onto surfaces has proven effective in reducing susceptibility to biofouling. In this research, AEM substrates were synthesized using the conventional chemical assembly method, involving the reaction of 1-butylimidazole (BIm) with commercially available bromomethylated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO). Subsequently, a synergistic anti-biofouling system comprising graphene oxide (GO) and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) co-mingled casting-solution was formulated into a 2-μm coating through spraying onto the AEM surface. Exceptional static antibacterial activity of this system towards prevalent Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. aureus ) bacteria due to contact killing mechanisms. The dynamic anti-biofilm capability of post-electrodialysis AEM was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing consistent efficacy. Notably, the enhancement of anti-biofouling properties was achieved without compromising separation efficiency, as the coating solution shares the same composition as the substrate membrane. Crucially, the co-sprayed coating technique on the AEM surface overcomes the conventional “trade-off phenomenon” between performance and stability. This approach to fabricating anti-biofouling AEMs is believed to provide valuable insights for further optimization and application, thereby facilitating their deployment in water treatment and related fields.

CdS, as a visible-light responsible photocatalyst , has gained considerable attentions for its relatively narrow bandgap and negative conduction band edge. However, its photocatalytic activity is hindered by challenges such as severe charge recombination, insufficient active sites and poor stability. In this work, a robust strategy is proposed to optimize the transfer channel for charge carriers and enhance the active sites by heterojunction and cocatalyst engineering. The well-designed GO/CdS/MoS 2 shows remarkable durability (20 h without significant loss of H 2 production rate) with a high photocatalytic H 2 production rate of 1.45 mmol h −1 g −1 (about 6.6-fold enhancement compared with CdS) at GO content of 0.1 wt% and MoS 2 loading amount of 5.0 wt%. The bolstered H 2 production rate is attributed to the augmented transfer channels of mass owing to the holey structure of GO , the enhanced active sites since the introduction of MoS 2 , and the unidirectional transfer of electrons from CdS to MoS 2 , which is ascribed to the built-in electric field in the CdS/MoS 2 interface. Thanks to the directional transfer of holes from CdS to GO in the GO/CdS interface, the assemblage of holes in CdS is prevented, thus contributing to the amplified stability GO/CdS/MoS 2 . Our findings offer insights for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of CdS based photocatalysts, which may inspire the development of the heterostructure photocatalysts for solar-to-fuel conversion.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) is widely utilized in photocatalysis due to its responsiveness to visible light, low cost, and non-toxicity. However, its efficiency is limited by factors such as the rapid recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, slow electron transfer rates, and a limited number of active surface sites. In this study, g-C 3 N 4 was synthesized through thermal polymerization, and varying amounts of graphene oxide (GO) were incorporated via physical blending to fabricate composite photocatalysts. The results indicated that the incorporation of GO not only increased the specific surface area and modified the pore size distribution of g-C 3 N 4 but also affected the heptazine ring structure through chemical bonding, thereby enhancing the density of active sites. Photocatalytic degradation experiments with methylene blue (MB) indicated that g-C 3 N 4 containing 2 % GO exhibited photocatalytic activity 2.84 times greater than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Kinetic simulations indicated that the K app value for the 2 % GO-g-C 3 N 4 composite was 0.00469 min −1 , which is 4.34 times higher than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 (0.00108 min −1 ). Furthermore, this composite maintained high photocatalytic activity after four cycles of reuse. An analysis of the photocatalytic degradation mechanism revealed that the incorporation of GO effectively promoted the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, enhanced photocurrent density, and improved carrier separation efficiency. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and free radical scavenging experiments confirmed that the primary active species involved in the degradation of MB by the composite photocatalyst were ·O 2 - and h + . This study presents a novel approach for enhancing the photocatalytic performance of g-C 3 N 4 by modifying its electronic structure and surface properties.

The traditional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) usually uses RuO 2 catalyst as the benchmark, but has always faced the problem of not being able to simultaneously achieve low overpotential and long-term stability under high current density. Here, we use the in-situ electrochemical coating method to coat graphene oxide (GO) on RuO 2 catalyst. The results indicate that changing the in-situ coating amount of GO on RuO 2 catalyst activates the redox ability of lattice oxygen. Realize the transition from the adsorbate precipitation mechanism (AEM) reaction mechanism to the lattice oxygen mediated mechanism (LOM) reaction mechanism, and accelerate the deprotonation step. The optimized RuO 2 -1%GO catalyst has a low overpotential (180 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and excellent catalytic stability (300 h at 100 mA cm −2 ).

A novel strategy based on nanoprobes for signal amplification was introduced in an electrochemical immunoassay platform. The nanoprobes based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-r-poly(acrylic acid) (PHEMA-r-PAA) and graphene oxide (GO) have the effect of double signal amplification. The resulting sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was able to detect the tumor marker alpha fetal protein (AFP) with high sensitivity and high selectivity. A good linear relationship could be observed in the AFP concentration range of 3.5 pg mL−1 to 35 ng mL−1 (R2 = 0.9898), and the minimum detection limit was 0.106 pg mL−1. In addition, the electrochemical immunosensor exhibited good stability and could be applied to AFP detection in clinical serum.

The nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids were synthesized and blended with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) by solution method. The effect of nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids on the crystallization was investigated by DSC and POM. The results showed that low addition amount of nano-ZIF-8@GO had a significant influence on the crystallization behavior of PLA. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the PLA/ZIF-8@GO nanocomposites with 0.5 wt% of ZIF-8@GO were increased to 49.63 MPa and 24.10% compared with 35.83 MPa and 17.66% of the pure PLA, respectively. The addition of nano-ZIF-8@GO hybrids also enhanced the flame retardancy of PLA, and the mechanism was proposed.

Carbon emission reduction has been accepted as a common concern all over the world. Currently, CO 2 emission is mainly derived from the consumption of fossil fuels. To solve this issue, there is an urgent need to develop technologies for CO 2 capture. The utilization of membrane technology to remove CO 2 from a mixture gas attracts great interest. In the present work, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate- co -vinylamine) was synthesized by polymerization ( n -vinyl formamide and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), hydrolysis, and ion exchange. The surface function of graphene oxide was carried out by aerobic self-polymerization of dopamine. The mixed matrix membranes were fabricated by adding the nanofiller (before and after modification) into the polymeric matrix. The membrane properties and its structure were characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, and SEM. The effect of nanofiller content and operation conditions on membrane performance was investigated. Results showed that the additions of nanofiller could decrease the crystallization of these membranes and effectively improve gas permeance. Remarkably, for the addition of 2.0 wt% dopamine-modified graphene oxide, the CO 2 permeance of the membrane was increased by 30.9% while achieving a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 83.5. The CO 2 permeation for CO 2 /CH 4 was also increased by 16.77%. These were surpassed over the 2008 Robeson’s upper bound. These resultant membranes demonstrated attractive potential for low-pressure post-combustion CO 2 capture. Besides, the stability of longtime tests on membranes was studied, and it was observed that membranes exhibited excellent stabilization with continuously operated for 220 h. The excellent properties of these membranes provide new opportunities for gas separation applications.

Organic dyes in natural waters jeopardize human health. Whether semiconductor materials can effectively degrade dyes has become a challenge for scientific research. Based on this, this study rationally prepared different nanocomposites to remove organic dyes effectively. Pure SnO2quantum dots, ZnO nanosheets, and SnO2/ZnO (ZS) binary nanocomposites are prepared using the hydrothermal method. Subsequently, SnO2/ZnO@GO (ZSG) ternary composites containing different amounts of GO, i.e., ZSG-5, ZSG-15, and ZSG-25, are synthesized by an ultrasonic water bath method, in which ZS was coupled with GO to form Z-type heterojunctions. The ZSG-15 ternary composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of rhodamine B by simulating sunlight. The test results show that the degradation rate of ZSG-15 is about 7.6 times higher than ZnO. The increase in photocatalytic activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of SnO2and GO to improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in ZnO. Notably, the large specific surface area of GO increases the reactive sites. Compared with binary nanocomposites, ZSG-15 broadens the response range to light while further accelerating the electron transport rate and improving the photoelectric stability.

The high electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity and mechanical sensitivity of silver acetylide-silver nitrate (SASN) seriously affects its application. For solving this problem, novel SASN@GO nanocomposites were successfully prepared by a self-assembly method. Thin sheet graphene oxide (GO) was coated on the surface of SASN, and prevented the agglomeration of SASN nanoparticles effectively. GO content in SASN@GO nanocomposites was controlled (0.5 ~ 1.5 wt%) to balance explosive performance and safety. Results reveal that SASN@(1%)GO exhibits the best thermal safety and desensitization, with thermal decomposition temperature, impact sensitivity (Is), friction sensitivity (Fs) and electrostatic energy at 50% ignition probability (E50) of 208.2°C, 1.96 J, 128 N and 0.64 mJ respectively, which are much better than that of SASN, indicating safety performances of SASN are improved through the introducetion of a small amount of GO. This work provides a strategy for reducing the explosion risk of SASN.

Helicobacter pylori is one of the main causes of gastritis and gastric ulcer. Early detection of H. pylori is of great significance for the prevention of gastric cancer. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical aptasensor using AgNPs-GO as redox probes was established for the specific detection of H. pylori in blood serum and stool samples. Firstly, AgNPs-GO nanocomposites were obtained by in-situ reduction of AgNPs on graphene oxide (GO) surface with glucose as reducing agent, in which AgNPs showed good biocompatibility and chemical stability, as well as redox property, and GO provided a large surface area to assemble a large number of AgNPs. Subsequently, the electrodeposition of AuNPs further improved the conductivity of the aptasensor. Additionally, the streptavidin was introduced into the aptasensor to effectively bind the biotin-modified aptamers. In this way, aptamers could be tethered to the surface through SA-biotin linkage, and H. pylori was selectivly binded by the aptamers subsequently. Under optimal conditions, the aptasensor could detect H. pylori in a wide concentration range (101 CFU mL−1–108 CFU mL−1) with a low detection limit of 3 CFU mL−1. What’s more, the developed method showed excellent performance in practical application, which provided a promising possibility for the detection of other pathogens in clinical diagnosis.

A novel ternary nanocomposite of zinc oxide, graphene oxide, and polythiophene (ZnO/GO/PTH) was synthesized via a sonochemical method for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in environmental waters. Comprehensive characterization using XRD, FT-IR, BET (surface area: 28.20 m²/g), FE-SEM/HR-TEM (average particle size: 3.42 nm), and EDS confirmed successful component integration with enhanced interfacial synergy. The ZnO/GO/PTH-modified electrode demonstrated 6.4-fold higher electrocatalytic activity toward CIP oxidation compared to bare GCE, attributed to synergistic π-π stacking interactions, Zn–S coordination, and charge-transfer enhancement. The optimized sensor exhibited outstanding analytical performance: (1) a broad linear range (0.015–6 μM, R² = 0.998), (2) high sensitivity (0.075 μA·μM⁻¹·cm⁻²), and (3) ultralow detection limit (LOD: 0.008 μmol/L, S/N = 3). Remarkably, the sensor retained 95.6% of its initial response after 25 days of storage and showed minimal signal variation (<3.0%) against 20–50-fold excess interferents (Ca²⁺, ofloxacin, etc.). Validated in real water samples (river, lake, tap water), the sensor achieved recoveries of 90.3–102.5% (RSD ≤ 5.7%, n = 5), demonstrating reliability for monitoring environmentally relevant CIP concentrations. This work provides a cost-effective and robust platform for on-site antibiotic surveillance in aquatic ecosystems.

The convergence of energy storage and sensing functionalities in a single miniaturized device represents a critical advancement for next-generation wearable electronics. Herein, we report an MXene/GO@MnO2 composite with a rationally designed layer-by-layer architecture for planar microsupercapacitors (PMSCs) and capacitive microsensors. By intercalating MnO2-decorated graphene oxide (GO@MnO2) between MXene layers, the interlayer spacing is expanded to 1.47 nm, enabling ultrafast ion diffusion (DLi+ = 3.1 × 10–12 cm2 s–1) and efficient vertical electron transport (σ⊥ = 247.7 S m–1). The resulting PMSCs achieve record-high areal capacitance (39.3 mF cm–2) and energy density (2.0 μWh cm–2) among MXene-based microdevices, with 91.1% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles. As a wearable sensor, the device demonstrates multisignal detection capability, including temperature (10–40 °C, sensitivity = 6.3% °C–1), pressure (sensitivity >1.0 kPa–1, response time <10 ms), and biomechanical motions. This work provides a paradigm for designing multifunctional microsystems through strategic interlayer engineering of 2D materials.
