In lithium metal batteries (LMBs), the instability of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) induced lithium dendrites and dead lithium frequently causes low cyclability and serious safety issues. Thereby, a highly stable artificial SEI layer with excellent lithium-ion mobility is desirable for dendrite-free lithium metal (LM) anodes. Herein, a novel clay/cross-linked network polymer-based artificial SEI layer (named as NCL) is prepared via compositing lithiated halloysite nanotubes (Li-HNTs) and cross-linked network polymers. The obtained NCL exhibits a promising Li + transference number of 0.39, high ionic conductivity of 6.37 × 10 -4 S cm −1 at 20 °C and superb mechanical performance. Benefiting these advantages, Li + can be uniformly and fast plated/stripped under the protection of NCL, effectively suppressing the formation of lithium dendrites. The NCL-protected LM symmetrical cells can be stably cycled for more than 1000 h and 1100 h at 1 mA cm −2 under cycling capacities of 1 mAh cm −2 and 3 mAh cm −2 , respectively. The NCL-Li|Cu half-cells present dendrite-free and reversible Li deposition with a high Coulombic efficiency of 99% for 170 cycles at 0.5 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the LiFePO 4 full-cell successfully achieves a good capacity of 115 mAh g −1 with a sensational capacity retention of 97.5% over 800 cycles at 2C. Additionally, 300 mAh LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 -coupled pouch-cells not only can stably circulate more than 50 cycles, but also can reliably function at repetitive mechanical deformation statuses and at different damage conditions. Therefore, this novel hybrid artificial SEI protective layer with desirable properties shed new light on the practical application of high-performance LMBs.

Indium oxide/halloysite nanotubes (In 2 O 3 /HNTs) composites used as adsorbents for tetracycline (TC) removal were synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method. The influences of adsorbent dosage, pH value, temperature and TC concentration on adsorption efficiency were investigated. The adsorption behavior of In 2 O 3 /HNTs toward TC could be described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo second–order kinetic models. The adsorption results indicated that the adsorption efficiency and capacity of 20% In 2 O 3 /HNTs were 7 times and 10 times as those of In 2 O 3 as well as both 4 times as those of HNTs, respectively. Adsorption mechanism studies suggested that the electrostatic attraction was primarily responsible for the improvement of adsorption performance. The abundant hydroxyl groups of HNTs and the interfacial interaction between In 2 O 3 and HNTs contributed to more negative surface charges of In 2 O 3 /HNTs, which was favorable for enhancing the adsorption efficiency. This work provides an efficient adsorbent for pollutant removal and contributes a feasible idea for constructing the potential adsorbents using natural minerals with abundant hydroxyl groups.

In the present research, a multifunctional hierarchical reinforcement was prepared by chemical modification of carbon fibers (CFs) with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by the bridging diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) for improving interfacial microstructures and properties of composites. Surface structures and groups of modified HNTs and CFs were characterized systematically. The uniform distributions of the introduced DTPA and HNTs helped to increase fiber polarity, surface energy, and wettability. As a consequence, significant enhancements of interfacial properties and hydrothermal aging resistance of composites were achieved, and interfacial reinforcing mechanisms have also been studied. Moreover, the storage modulus showed a 17.95% improvement, and the glass transition temperature was enhanced by 17°C by dynamic mechanical analysis testing.

Magnetic microspheres, 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan/Fe 3 O 4 /halloysite nanotubes/ofloxacin (HACC/Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs/OFL), for the controlled release of OFL were prepared by in situ crosslinking with glutaraldehyde in the spray-drying process. The magnetic microspheres were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and a magnetometer. Various parameters influencing the encapsulation efficiency, drug loading and in vitro controlled release properties of the magnetic microspheres for OFL were also studied. Many stripes were formed and some tubular HNTs could be seen at higher magnification on the surface of the HACC/Fe 3 O 4 /HNTs/OFL magnetic microspheres. The magnetic microspheres show superparamagnetic property and fast magnetic response. The encapsulation efficiency and the cumulative release of OFL are closely related to HACC concentration, HNTs contents and crosslinking density. The release of OFL follows the first-order kinetics.

In recent years, a range of high-performance ultrafiltration membranes have been developed, but maintaining high retention without sacrificing high throughput remains a serious challenge. In this paper, functionalized halloysite nanotubes is constructed by copolymerization and by a one-step reaction of L -arginine and dopamine hydrochloride using halloysite nanotubes as carriers. Subsequently, modified polyethersulfone membranes are prepared by blending them as additives through non-solvent-induced phase transition separation. As the synthesized nanofillers is rich in functional groups, negative electronegativity, and unique structures, the study focuses on adding nanofillers’ effect on the membrane structure and physicochemical properties. The addition of appropriate nanofillers enhances the membrane surface wettability and negative electronegativity, and the enlarged internal pores and the dense layer that remains flat and homogeneous effectively promote the flux of small molecules, the retention of large molecules, and the cyclic stability of the membrane. The prepared polyethersulfone membranes demonstrate exceptional cycle stability, high separation efficiency (almost 100 % for Congo red), and significantly improved permeation performance (initial permeate flux up to 316.5 L m -2 h −1 ). The results demonstrate the high potential of the modified prepared polyethersulfone membranes for pertinent environmental separation processes.

To improve the comprehensive performance of intumescent fire-retardant coatings, the functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-D, HNTs@Fe 3 O 4 , and HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 ) were synthesized as synergistic flame retardants and incorporated into intumescent fire-retardant coatings (IFRC) for steel structures, demonstrating significant flame retardant properties. Among these modified halloysite nanosheets, HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 showed the best flame retardancy and water resistance. Adding the optimal addition amount (3 wt%) of HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 can increase the residual weight of coating from 28.10 % to 38.40 % and reduce the backside temperature of the coated steel plate from 288 °C to 177 °C, indicating that HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 can effectively improve the thermal stability and insulation performances of intumescent fire-retardant coatings. Cone calorimetric analysis showed HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 can effectively suppress the heat and smoke release of the intumescent fire-retardant coatings. Compared with the unmodified coating sample, the total heat release (THR) and total smoke release (TSR) of the HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 -containing coating sample were reduced by 66.04 % and 11.36 %. HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 facilitates the formation of dense char layers confirmed by the micro morphology characterization. Further mechanism analysis shows that HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 has obvious catalytic carbonization effect and is helpful to construct the dense expanded char layer with higher graphitization degree. The uniformly dispersed HNTs-D@Fe 3 O 4 improved the water resistance of intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which is mainly due to the hydrophobicity and barrier effect, thus effectively preventing the loss of water-soluble components.

The immobilization of Hg0 and detoxication of Hg-containing composites are enormous challenges for Hg pollution control, which provide a high requirement for the design and synthesis of materials. Herein, a new composite with halloysite, selenium, and transition metals as raw materials (FeCo-LDH/HNTs@Se) for a Hg0 trap was designed by precipitation with ion exchange and an in situ selenization method. Intrinsic features such as high affinity, microwave permittivity (109–1012), large surface area, abundant pores, and many active components favored Hg0 removal and immobilization. The removal performance, flue gas tolerance, and synergistic effect of active components were improved greatly when microwave was added. The study indicated that (1) the Hg0 removal efficiency of the composite could reach 99.4%; (2) the composite had excellent tolerance to different industries’ flue gases. The electron exchange of Co(II)/Co(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) and the existence of Se and SeO2 were important for Hg0 immobilization. HgSe was the main adsorption product based on both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and an online lab-built thermal decomposition system (TPD-AFS) analysis, which made the used-materials possess low mercury leaching content (0.09 mg·L–1) lower than the US EPA regulatory value (0.2 mg·L–1). This work provides a sound way for mercury control, which is significant for environmental protection.

In this work, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were chosen as the fillers and high performance polyimide (PI) as the matrix to form a series of dielectric composite materials with high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss and excellent heat resistance. Firstly, KH550 was used to modify the surface of HNTs to make sure of a good dispersion of HNTs into the polymer. The results showed that the addition of KH550 modified HNTs (K-HNTs) can improve the dielectric constant of the composite films while maintaining their excellent dielectric loss properties. To further increase the dielectric constant of the HNTs/PI composites, conductive polyaniline (PANI) was used to coat the surface of HNTs to obtain PANI modified HNTs (PANI-HNTs). Compared with the K-HNTs filled systems, the dielectric constant of the PANI-HNTs/PI nanocomposite films is greatly enhanced. The highest dielectric constant of the PANI-HNTs/PI films can achieve 17.3 (100 Hz) with a low dielectric loss of 0.2 (100 Hz). More importantly, the as-prepared composite films have high breakdown strengths (>110.4 kV mm−1) and low coefficients of thermal expansion, as low as 7 ppm per °C, and a maximum discharge energy density of 0.93 J cm−3. Also, such properties are maintained stably up to 300 °C, which is critical for manufacturing heat-resisting film capacitors.

In aqueous zinc-ion batteries, Zn dendrites growth, HER and by-product generation on the surface of Zn anode seriously affect the battery performance. To solve the problems, in this paper, a composite separator is prepared by coating the filter paper with halloysite and ZnO. The 3D network built by surface-negative halloysite provides a uniform nanoscale pore structure for the separator, which achieves uniform and efficient Zn 2+ transport. The –OH groups on the surface of halloysite promote the desolvation process of hydrated Zn 2+ by forming hydrogen bonds with H 2 O. The uniformly dispersed nanoscale ZnO in the coating promotes Zn 2+ transport, homogenizes Zn 2+ deposition on the surface of Zn anode by absorbing Zn 2+ , and reduces the nucleation overpotential (22.3 mV). Therefore, under the synergistic effect of halloysite and ZnO, the electrolyte/Zn anode interface is stabilized. The Zn-symmetric cell assembled with ZHLFP10 exhibits a long life of more than 1600 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 , while the Zn‖MnO 2 cell assembled with it exhibits a discharge-specific capacity of 131.0 mA h g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 80.35 % at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 for 1000 cycles.

Iron-based catalysts are environmentally friendly, and iron minerals are abundant in the earth's crust, with great potential advantages for PMS-based advanced oxidation process applications. However, homogeneous Fe 2+ /PMS systems suffer from side reactions and are challenging to reuse. Therefore, developing catalysts with improved stability and activity is a long-term goal for practical Fe-based catalyst applications. In this study, we prepared Fe-HNTs nanoreactors by encapsulating a nitrogen-doped carbon layer with one-dimensional halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using the molten salt-assisted method. Subsequently, Fe (Co, Ni) nanoclusters were anchored onto the nitrogen-doped carbon layer at a relatively low temperature (550℃), resulting in stable and uniform distribution of metal nanoclusters on the surface of HNTs carriers in the form of Fe-N x coordination. The results showed that the dissolution of the molten salt and leaching of post-treated metal oxides generated numerous mesopores within the Fe-HNTs nanoreactor, leading to a specific surface area more than 10 times that of HNTs. This enhanced mass transfer capability facilitates rapid pollutant removal while exposing more active sites. Remarkably, Fe-HNTs adsorbed up to 97% of tetracycline within 60 min. In the Fe-HNTs/PMS system, the predominant reactive oxygen species has been shown to be 1 O 2 , and the added tetracycline was degraded by more than 98% within 5 min. The removal of tetracycline was maintained above 96% in the presence of interfering factors such as wide pH (3–11) and inorganic anions (5 mM Cl − , HCO 3 − , NO 3 − , and SO 4 2− ). The investigated mechanism suggests that efficient degradation and interference resistance of the Fe-HNTs/PMS system is attributed to the synergistic effect between the rapid adsorption of porous structure and the non-radical ( 1 O 2 )-dominated degradation pathway. Confining the active adsorption materials within the nanostructure space can significantly improve adsorption performance. However, the fundamental mechanisms by which intrinsic nanoconfinement in clay minerals modulates the microstructure of active materials and regulates interfacial interactions remain unclear. In this work, a comprehensive analysis was conducted to compare the adsorption performance of two structures: a nonconfined structure (ZrP/HNTs), where zirconium phosphate (ZrP) nanocrystals are grown on the outer surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), and a nanoconfined structure (ZrP@HNTs), where ZrP nanocrystals are confined within HNTs' lumen. The resulting ZrP@HNTs adsorption capacity for Pb (II) was 3 times that of ZrP/HNTs (163.7 vs. 54.6 mg/g), and the adsorption rate increased by 2.8 times. Additionally, the confined structure endowed ZrP@HNTs with remarkable stability, only 6.7% capacity decrease after five cycles. Furthermore, finite element simulations revealed that the nanoconfined structure of ZrP@HNTs effectively enriches Pb(II), increasing its concentration and facilitating adsorption. According to the above result, low and high Pb(II) concentrations were used to simulate the adsorption environments of ZrP/HNTs and ZrP@HNTs, respectively, with atomic force microscopy (AFM) providing key quantitative insights. AFM force spectroscopy further confirmed that the nanoconfined structure enhanced the adhesion energy between Pb(II) and phosphate groups on the ZrP surface from 4.34 mJ·m −2 to 10.81 mJ·m −2 , directly contributing to improved adsorption stability. These findings offer valuable insights into the role of nanoconfinement in enhancing adsorption efficiency, providing a basis for the development of advanced heavy metal removal technologies.
