Sulfhydryl functionalized carbon dots (HS-CDs) mediated by Ag + were used to develop a fluorescent sensor for the determination of Hg 2+ in aqueous solutions. FTIR and XPS confirmed the successful modification of -SH on the surface of HS-CDs. Dripping Ag + into HS-CDs yielded brown agglomerates of silver thiolate leading to strong FL quenching of the HS-CDs. The signal-on fluorescent sensor was acheived by dispersing the precipitates in a PBS buffer (pH 7.4, 0.01 mol/L). Remarkable FL recovery was observed upon the addition of Hg 2+ into the sensor owing to the energy trap induced by exposure of -NH 2 on the surface of the HS-CDs. Fluorescence intensities of the HS-CDs were linearly recovered in Hg 2+ concentrations of 0.01–0.75 nmol/L with an extremely low detection limit of 4.2 pmol/L. The sensor exhibited stronger specificity toward Hg 2+ than co-existent metal ions. The detecting results for real water samples obtained by the sensor showed good agreement with ICP-AES (P > 0.05), demonstrating a sensitive and selective fluorescent nanosensor for ultra-trace determination of Hg 2+ with acceptable precision and satisfactory accuracy.

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are new porous crystalline materials owning outstanding stability, adsorbability and hypotoxicity. The assembly of fluorescence probes into porous COF provides a good method for ratiometric fluorescence detection avoiding the toxic effects of fluorescence probes to the samples. Herein, a two-dimensional COF (TAPT-DHTA-COF) was employed as a host to encapsulate N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) (NCDs-RhB@COF). NCDs and RhB were uniformly assembled into the pores of TAPT-DHTA- COF based on the hydrogen bond . The as-prepared NCDs-RhB@COF nanocomposites exhibited blue emission of NCDs at 440 nm and red emission of RhB at 570 nm at excitation of 340 nm. After the addition of Hg 2+ , the blue emission became weaker while the red emission was enhanced due to the strong coordination between NCDs-RhB@COF and Hg 2+ . This “on-off” fluorescence probe was applied in detection of trace Hg 2+ with linear range of 0.048–10 μM and detection limit of 15.9 nM together with appropriate selectivity, acceptable sensitivity and stability. The work shreds some light for COF as platform to construct ratiometric fluorescent sensor for industrial and biological application.

In this present work, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were prepared from thiomalic acid as the carbon and sulfur source and NSCDs were used conveniently and sensitively to monitor Hg 2+ and glutathione , regarding as a switching mode (turn-on-off) fluorescent sensing probe. The constructed NSCDs were characterized with their morphology and surface functional groups by TEM, XPS and XRD . The average particle size of the as-synthesized NSCDs is 4.4 nm. The fluorescence of NSCDs was efficiently quenched by Hg 2+ with excitation and emission wavelength at 380/568 nm, respectively. The sensitive detection method of Hg 2+ was established in 0.00–32.0 μM concentration range. The quenched fluorescence of [email protected] 2+ could be recovered after adding GSH. As a result, the concentration of GSH at 0.50–34.0 μM could linearly relate to the change in fluorescence of [email protected] 2+ . The Hg 2+ and GSH in human urine and serum samples were detected with the recoveries of 98.5%–104.5 and 98.5–103.5%, respectively. Owing to NSCDs favorable biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, they were successfully applied to detect Hg 2+ and GSH in HepG2 cells, indicating that NSCDs have potential applications in biology.

A label-free DNA Y junction sensor for amplified detection of Hg 2+ has been demonstrated by using thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T-Hg 2+ -T) recognition, cascade toehold-mediated DNA strand displacement and dye staining double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). In our work, assistant DNA could bind with the first hairpin DNA with toehold domains by the help of thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T–Hg 2+ –T) base pairs recognition. The second hairpin DNA with toehold domains will then hybridize with the complementary sequences in first hairpin DNA, which again initiates a new toehold domains to open the third hairpin DNA, triggering a cascade strand displacement reaction. Exonuclease III (Exo III) was added to digest the three hairpin DNA with recessed 3′ ends in the absence of Hg 2+ to reduce the background signal. As a comparison, Exo III is replaced by GO to reduce the background signal because single-strand DNA (ssDNA), three hairpin DNAs with intercalated dye could be adsorbed onto the surface of GO and lead to quenched fluorescence. The method, designed in a simple “mix, incubate, and detect” format, can detect concentrations of Hg 2+ as low as 0.031 nM, and exhibit good selectivity and practical application.

A new type of ratiometric fluorescent probe capable of detecting Hg 2+ ions at nanomolar-concentration level with high selectivity was developed based on an indole-trizole-rhodamine triad and its practicability for intracellular Hg 2+ sensing was verified. The as-prepared fluorescent probe is capable of detecting Hg 2+ over other competing metal ions including Ag + with high selectivity. The synergistic effect of Hg 2+ -assisted conversion of the nonfluorescent ring-closed rhodamine moiety to the highly fluorescent ring-open form as well as the fluorescence signal amplification originating from the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from indole-trizole conjugate to rhodamine moiety contributed to a detection limit of 11 nM of the probe for Hg 2+ sensing.

In this paper, hair, which is composed of 99% keratin and 1% other elements, is chosen as a carbon source for nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterials. By hydrothermal treatment of hair in water without any additives, such as salts, acids, or bases, carbon nanospheres with a photoluminescent quantum yield of 24.8% have been prepared. When the excitation wavelength changes from 300 to 480 nm, the photoluminescent peak shifts from 422 (violet) to 520 nm (green). Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra analysis shows the carbon nanospheres are functionalized with hydroxyl, amino, carbonyl, and carboxylic acid groups. The carbon nanospheres have been further used as a novel probe for label-free detection of Hg2+ ions. The method possesses high sensitivity and selectivity. The linear range for Hg2+ ions is 10 to 100 nM. Meanwhile, the detection can be easily accomplished with a one-step rapid operation. This sensing system has been successfully used for the analysis of river water samples.

We have designed and synthesized a spirobifluorene–tetrrhodamine fluorescent probe 2 based on the through-bond energy transfer (TBET) system for the “off–on” detection of Hg2+. As compared with fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) strategy, the TBET system did not need spectral overlap between the donor emission and the acceptor absorption, therefore, the choice of dye pairs for the probe design was wide. The Stokes shift was larger and the energy transfer efficiency was higher than that of the FRET system. The probe 2 showed exclusive response toward Hg2+ by the fluorescence enhancement and the color changed from colorless to pink. Other metal ions showed no significant variation to Hg2+. The energy-transfer efficiency was calculated to be 99.6%, and the detection limit was determined to be 3 ppb. Thus, probe 2 could be used as a fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensor for the detection of Hg2+.

Green, low-cost, and water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots were prepared under hydrothermal conditions, with a plant of Jinhua bergamot as a carbon source. The as-synthesized C-dots have better stability and relatively high photoluminescence with a quantum yield of 50.78%, along with the fluorescence lifetime of ca. 3.84 ns. Their photoluminescence can be significantly quenched by simply using the buffer solution of HAC–NaAC for Hg 2+ and Tris–HCl for Fe 3+ . Based on this, we explored for selective detection of Hg 2+ and Fe 3+ with high selectivity, fast response, low cost, and broad linear ranges of 0.01–100 μM for Hg 2+ and 0.025–100 μM for Fe 3+ , as well as low detection limits of 5.5 nM (Hg 2+ ) and 0.075 μM (Fe 3+ ) (S/N = 3).

In this work, a high-performance probe for Hg 2+ detection has been successfully synthesized based on Rhodamine B isothiocyanate (RBI) and thioglycolic acid (TA) co-modified Fe 3 O 4 @Au nanocomposites. The probe has many favorable properties, including suitable size and magnetic response (46.28 emu/g). Importantly, the fluorescence changes of the probe are remarkably specific for Hg 2+ in the presence of other competitive cations, and the limit of detection (LOD) for Hg 2+ in aqueous solutions is lower (3.03 nM) than the value of the World Health Organization (30 nM), which meet the selective and sensitive requirements for practical application. Interestingly, due to the magnetic responsive performance of Fe 3 O 4 , the probe can be recycled by a magnet and reused by addition of free RBI into Fe 3 O 4 @Au solutions that were already used for Hg 2+ detection. Furthermore, the experiments of probe for monitoring Hg 2+ inside human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVEC) cells reveal that the probe has biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity, and can effectively detect Hg 2+ in a short time. All the results presented in this study show that the proposed probe has significant potential for Hg 2+ detection in environmental and biological samples.

Hydrophilic magnetic N-doped porous carbon composites (MNPCs) with high special surface areas and rich nitrogen content was prepared via simple one-step carbonization of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), 2-methylimidazole (HmIm), and Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) mixture directly. During the carbonization process, ZnO NPs directly reacts with HmIm to yield porous ZIF-8 while the MNPs are incorporated into the frameworks to generate magnetic metal–organic frameworks (MFCs), and the MFCs acts as a self-sacrificing template to prepare MNPC. The obtained MNPCs via simple one-step carbonization strategy display higher adsorption capacity (429 mg g–1) for Hg2+ ions than MNPC-T700-M3-T (382 mg g–1) which was obtained by two-step synthesis strategy for comparison. It also exhibits very fast adsorption dynamics (adsorption rate constant (K2) = 2.45 g mg–1 min–1) for Hg2+ and could efficiently remove 95% Hg2+ in 2 min for 20 mg L–1 Hg2+ solution. Furthermore, the prepared MNPC exhibits good chemical stability and the adsorption capacity is still more than 95% even after 10 adsorption–elution cycles. The proposed method is easy-processing and economic, which not only provides highly efficient MNPCs for metal ions capture but also paves the ways toward various MFCs with different ligands through solvent/additive-free synthesis approaches.

A novel water-soluble fluorescent probe FLS2 based on the thiooxofluorescein derivative has been firstly designed and synthesized. UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra studies showed that the FLS2 as a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity towards Hg 2+ , which was mainly attributed to the special binding with the receptor unit accompanied with the spirolactam ring-opening progress. In addition, the probe FLS2 could be used as a naked-eye indicator for Hg 2+ with reversible response. It displayed approximate 37-fold fluorescent enhancement at 529 nm in the presence of only 2.0 equiv. Hg 2+ and the detection limit was calculated at about 39 nM. What's more, cellular imaging experiment revealed that the sensor had excellent biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity that could be utilized for monitoring Hg 2+ in living cells.

An approach for mercury ions (Hg2+) sensing based on the Hg2+-induced aggregation of thymine (T)–SH-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been reported. The T–SH ligands that we synthesized can easily be coupled to the surface of AuNPs through the Au–S bond and can recognize Hg2+ with high selectivity by forming a T–Hg–T complex with strong affinity. For the T–SH-functionalized AuNPs (T–S-AuNPs) sensor, upon addition of Hg2+, the formation of the T–Hg–T complex induces aggregation of T–S-AuNPs and results in a significant change of color and UV-Vis absorption spectra. Thus, our method can be used for the rapid, easy and reliable screening of Hg2+ in aqueous solution, with high sensitivity (2.8 nM) and selectivity over competing analytes. The developed method is successfully applied to the sensing of Hg2+ in real environmental samples.
